The Throwaway Year

Rate this book
Hayden Michaels had given six years of her life to MyKell before he abruptly informs her that things hadn’t been “right” for a while and he had met someone else. That is when Hayden finally opens her eyes and takes a good look around at her life and the mess that she was—financially, emotionally and physically. Never able to maintain enough discipline to put her mind to any difficult task, Hayden makes a bold decision; she will throw away an entire year of her life; moving towards her goals with no thought of pleasure or pain. In this latest IR novel written by award winning author Pepper Pace, we are taken on a journey with Hayden as she tries to recreate herself with sometimes comical results. With the use of positive affirmations Hayden’s journey is a lesson to us all as she faces situations and people that help her to realize her worth—namely a man who has been written off by society. But the question becomes whether Hayden can accept the faults of someone else without allowing herself to fall back into her old ways? Warning: this story contains explicit language, sex, and descriptions of drug use.

Who is Pepper Pace?

Pepper Pace is the pen name used by the author. Born and raised in Cincinnati, she has always enjoyed creativity. At a very young age, Pepper had a gift for art and would spend most of her spare time drawing images that she later began adding stories behind. Soon writing became more important than the illustrations and though she still loved art, it took a back seat to her real love.

Pepper wrote her first novel when she was 12 years old and had written 2 more by the age of 18. Too shy to share her work with anyone, Pepper stock piled her many stories into notebooks until she came upon Literotica.com and was compelled to share her craft.

Pepper became instantly popular and won several awards each year in which she submitted a story to the site. After receiving popular feedback, she grew in confidence and created a popular blog entitled Writing Feedback where she encourages her readers to interact with her on topics concerning, music, writing, art and pop culture, and can be contacted at her blog:

Pepper lives in Cincinnati where many of her characters also reside.

While this story has a lot of similarities between it and another of Ms Pace's novels, "Beast", (which is a book I ABSOLUTELY LOVE) this is still a unique read in itself. The characters' personalities are still quite different. Some of their circumstances are different as well.

If there was one thing that I do wish was more similar to "Beast" with this novel, it would be the length of the novel, as well as getting Brian's POV. I felt I missed out on a lot of really getting to know him. I wanted to hear his voice, see his reactions through his own words. Not just according to Hayden's POV. While these two have great chemistry together, & the places they are both at in their lives allows them to be open to one another, I still wish I could have gotten Brian's perspective as well, while these things unfolded. Not to belittle the growth of Hayden's character or the issues that she was fighting through, but Brian's issues not only affected him internally & externally, they affected people close to him greatly. A ripple effect of sorts. So I would have loved to see a broader scope with him, before witnessing he & Hayden coming full circle together.

If we would have gotten this then I would have gotten more time with them as well. I love these two together. They make me giddy...

And Brian just has this thing about him that leaves a chick like...

But I do so love their story. I love the pacing of this book & the message that it brings with it. It's not only realistic, but it's quite touching & erotically hot. And the ending was just beautiful. I couldn't put it down.

I would highly recommend this read. Keep it up Ms. Pace!

The Throwaway Year is the first book I've read by Pepper Pace even though I have a good number of them. I buy her books because without having read anything of hers before now, I can see from her book synopses that she has a unique way of looking at the world, particularly this funny thing called love. Her main protagonists are always people who are overlooked and underestimated, who are too plain, too damaged or in some ways what society might consider too insignificant to find and keep a great love in their lives. Carving out such a brave niche in the world of romance takes some doing, so that alone makes me respect her as writer.

Now, where The Throwaway Year is concerned, it's ironic that I would read this one first because in many ways, without knowing for sure, I get the sense that this might be more conventional than the stories she usually writes. The H and h have challenges that make them far from the stereotypical romance novel couple, but they're also very much like people I think most of us might know, so my instinct is that their story might not have been the very best showcase for this writer's talent. Still, I appreciated that she showed the journey of a woman to love herself and hence to be able to expect and accept love, and the journey of a man to forgive himself and remake his life.

What I most enjoyed though, was not the relationship story, but that of the way the main protagonists interacted with secondary characters. It felt like I was reading an author of contemporary women's or literary fiction who was almost artificially trying to give the romance audience a formula that they have come to expect from her. There was texture and detail, and a writer's instinct and enjoyment that leaps off the page when she was describing the quirks of the secondary characters that I didn't feel as much of in the romance arc. Having said that, I'll restate my disclaimer, that I haven't read anything else from Pepper Pace and so, may not be the best judge.

Still, this book was more than enough to stoke my interest about the rest of her work, and make me want to dig into them. I highly recommend it.

Yeah, um, no.

This totally lost me somewhere in the middle. The only reason I accorded two stars is because the beginning was really good.

Probably about 40% in everything became utterly ridiculous. My turnoffs include: the stilted prose, the saccharine relationship, the very technical and unsexy sex scenes, the pink and purple penis, the IRR friendships, the Todd daddy usurping, the affirmations, the loss of Hayden's initial drive as the relationship comes to be the total focus, the speed at which the relationship developed, the codependency, the heroin. I have a serious, serious, SERIOUS problem with drugs, and ex-heroin addicts are not appealing. I was highly disturbed.

Why does this author pair her heroines with the most broke-down guys? I get that both of them were fighting their way back to themselves, but drug addiction and theft is on a whole other level. I'd say it's incomparable to obesity and a poor relationship, but I truly see the point.

Anyway, the end is also highly unrealistic, sickeningly sweet, and atrociously done while being replete with grammatical errors.

Not for me. Ugh.

In fact, I concede that this author isn't for me, period. I never quite like her books.

Pepper Pace is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors but honestly speaking this one was not my favorite. I did not feel a connection to the MCs (Brian and Hayden) nor secondary characters. The ending including the epilogue felt rushed and left me wanting more. With that being said, there are a lot of positives to The Throwaway Year I did appreciate like
the premise of second chances and not throwing away a year of your life on negativity; whether it’s in a relationship or self-doubt/loathing.
her books always deal with realistic topics and this book is no different as it tackles drug abuse/usage
the affirmations, and one in particular I loved.
although self conscious, Hayden does show strength
the slow build up to the love making scene is worth the wait
Pepper Pace is a great writer even though The Throwaway Year was not my favorite read. Don’t get me wrong, it’s enjoyable but for those who are looking to be introduced to Pepper’s writing I would recommend starting with Beast. In the end, I give The Throwaway Year 3.5 stars.

This was another winner produced by Ms. Pace. Not only was it "Captivating," but it was also well written, well edited, and overall, it had an awesome message for those who need/want to "reboot" their lives.

I started this book yesterday evening, and I just couldn't put it down. Ms. Pace did an awesome job with crafting her characters (Hayden, Brian, Dani, MyKell, Pam, Abdullah, and the whole entire lot), and with inserting a message of self-empowerment and motivation that is sure to inspire just about any reader to get up and get movin'& start living...

In my opinion, it was worth every single solitary penny, and more.

Giving this one: 5 solid stars...

This was an amazing read! There were moments where I identified with Hayden- the way she felt about herself, her relationships, interaction with her best friend, and the things she felt she needed to do to get right with herself. I loved reading about her transforming herself from the beginning to the end, not only mentally, but physically. I also enjoyed reading the positive affirmations written throughout the book. Reading this has left me feeling great!!

This was a story about self-discovery and finding out your own worth and loving yourself. Very smooth, nice love story. It focused mainly on the female character for the majority of the book, it was a mellow read. The book had a lot of affirmations in it. Reflective story. Worth a read.

How do you do it?

So I started this Book a few days ago and I am floored by how Ms Pace nails me emotionally with her words! This has been sitting on my kindle and on a whim I started reading and could not put it down! I am so elated and enlightened by the verses written in it! Wow!
This story centers around Hayden gaining her life back after heartbreak. She realizes in a way that she has not been living her life but going with the flow. After making some hard decisions including getting her heath, finances, and self confidence back she is rewarded with what we all want: LOVE. When she wasn't expecting it she develops a friendship that turns into something more. What a blessing but Hayden is scared to walk into it. Can Brian be all that he appears? As she learns more about him, could it deter the budding friendship/romance they are developing?
A Must Read! Amazing read and full of beautiful affirmations! Keep writing cause I am reading!

This was my first book by Pepper Pace, and well worth it. It does have language, but I didn't feel like I was being cussed at (it wasn't over the top...quite sporadic, actually). I liked Brian and Hayden. I liked how their interactions progressed over time rather than an instant thing. The affirmations were thought provoking. Everything that happened seemed realistic. I didn't want to put the book down. I was rooting for Hayden to stick with everything and I know how that ONE DAY can have an adverse affect on everything that you've tried so hard to build. Great story. Worth the read!

I love the way I feel after reading a Pepper Pace novel. It's sort of like having a book hangover. The characters stick with you long after you've finished the book.

Brian and Hayden were so endearing! I'm glad they found their happily ever after.

I eventually did fall in love with this, it has some similarities to Beast, but was also unique. The sex (that took forever to get to) was steamy and worth the wait. I loved how both characters were flawed, but worked so hard to better themselves. I loved Brian and Hayden together! 4 stars.

A Very Good And Inspirational Interracial Romance

The Throwaway Year is very good and inspirational interracial romance that earned a rating of five stars. After Hayden's lover of six years broke up with her, she decides to take a year to work making herself be better, physically, financially and mentally. During her journey and processes, she meets and fall in love with an ex addict dealing with improving his self. I found this book inspirational and sweet the way they supported each other through their obstacles. I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to everyone who enjoys reading very good romance novels.

Keep looking...

This is an excellent premise for a romance - two people trying to heal themselves and NOT through each other. However, if, like me, you are looking to discover Black romance authors...skip this book. The writing is clunky and the dialogue is sparse and unnatural. The book just doesn’t flow. There are more Black authors and BWWM romances to be discovered...I’ll keep looking

I enjoyed this story very much. It was similar to the awesomely FANTASTIC 'Beast' but only in the beginning. These two characters were different and endearing. I loved their fight separately to survive and grow and when they came together it was wonderful. I loved how for more than a third of the book you didn't know who was Her man. Great twist. Loved it.

This story reminds me off Pepper Pace other story Beast which I loved.
I just didn't care much for the female Mc and I didn't understand Dani I just found it weird that she tried to set up her bestie with a man she has feelings for .
I liked reading the story but I just didn't love it like I usually do with Pepper Pace books

Thank you got another masterpiece

Timing is everything. This book provided encouragement as well as a sweet romance. I love Pepper Pace books. I love how her romances ste not your typical cute person falls in love with another cute person or a not cute person falling in love with a hunk. Just two ordinary people with a love story that is both sensual and encouraging.

Pretty good. For me not her best. It just seemed almost too positive for me, idk. It just didn't hit home like some of her previous books. Maybe because it was a quick read, I tend to like more backstory.

Another hit by Ms. Pace. What can I say about her work? She is one of the most solid writers in the I/R genre and she is just solid period. I appreciate all of the books that she has written. Ms. Pace gives you true romance. No insta sex from this author. She gives you build up of friendship and connection and this book is no different.

We have two people, Hayden and Brian who both have psychological issues. Hayden has spent the last six years of her life with a leech named MyKell who lives off of his woman and Brian , for the sake of any spoilers has some serious issues as well. Hayden has dedicated one year of her life to make changes after the leech dumps her for someone else. Anyone that has been in that situation knows the person being left behind gets damaged emotionally, thinking that somehow they weren't good enough. Hayden has these feelings and is going to discipline herself to change what she doesn't like about herself. The leech gave her the push with the breakup to do something that she otherwise wouldn't have done and that is to take a good look at herself and make some changes. First, Hayden does a life change with her physical lifestyle. She cleans out her home of anything that negatively impacts her life and gives her discipline. Lastly, Hayden gets a second job to pay off her debt that she has accumulated. This is where she meets Brian. He comes into her life and they are just 2 people who are trying to get themselves together. They meet by sharing affirmations. They become friends who both are not actively looking for love, but looking to improve themelves. It is nice because they are just both just trying to survive and they are helping each other by constantly encouraging one another. It is no wonder that they fell in love. It is just a beautiful story.

I had this whole lengthy spiel ready to type, complete with quotes of my favorite lines written in the story. In the end I decided against it because, really anyone who's read any of my reviews on a Pepper Pace novel will see that I almost always leave her stories with a sense of being so immersed and affected, it usually takes me a few days to shake myself from that.
She has a brilliant mind for telling stories, I'm left wondering how she does it? Just the scenarios she comes up with that I believe not many authors would dare touch is mind blowing at times.
Needless to say this story was an EXPERIENCE.. plain and simple. When you're ready to read this story , just open your mind to the experience. And know that it is soooo much more than a love story, in fact I believe that was just the dessert ( It started with a golden apple :-] ) . The main course was watching a woman transform her life with self affirmations that transcends this story. I've lived part of Hayden's life and I rooted for her from day one.

This is not a romance novel with instant gratification of sex. It's really a 6 month journey of Hayden after the 'big breakup' with Mykell(and you'll have to read to see why it turns out to be so).. Really happy to see that Todd & Kia as well as Bill and Raina!! were mentioned in this story. Always a pleasant surprise to see follow-up on characters from previous books :-)

Hayden Michaels is blindsided by a breakup and decides to commit one year to improving her self-image. Along the way she discovers how to love herself as well as others fully and the importance of honesty. I loved how realistic these characters were. They weren't millionaires with easy access to everything and their flaws weren't overly dramatic. In fact, many of us know Haydens, MyKells, Danis and Brians. I loved that aspect of the story most. I also loved the daily affirmations; it was empowering and truthful. The weakest part of the story is Brian's development. I think his addiction was wrapped in a pretty bow but the reality is addiction is messy, unpredictable and affects the lives of everyone involved. What did Brian do, besides confide in Hayden, that helped him stay on the straight and narrow everyday? Did he go to NA meetings? Did he have a counselor? Did Hayden have deeper concerns about his ability to stay clean? I wish that was explored because I think that's a truer reality of these types of situations and for the most part, this book aimed to be true.
