Parang Kayo Pero Hindi

Rate this book
The “parang kayo, pero hindi” stage. Others call it MU or mutual understanding. Pseudo relationships. Pseudo boyfriends. Flings. Almost like a relationship, but not quite. It is a phase where the persons involved are more than friends, but not quite lovers.

Noong 70's merong free love. Noong 80's uso rin ang premarital sex pero at least noon (well based on my own experience), ginagawa lang yon pag may love both sides.

Taglish o pure ingles o pure Tagalog, mahusay lahat. So, versatile writer itong si Noringai.

Usapang Sapatos: A conversation inspired by Noringai

My officemate and I had been looking for a copy of Parang Kayo, Pero Hindi by Noringai since it hit the shelves last year. Finally, after months of scouring numerous bookstores, we found copies in NBS near our office. The book is always sold out so we didn't let the chance pass (again) because we might have to wait months to find one.

I wasn’t even aware Noringai existed until this book. I’d been online for like forever but blog hopping is not in my vocabulary. I don’t even read in Wattpad and believe me I’ve only heard of it when Summit Books started publishing works from that site. Anyway, there really are gems you can find online and this is one of them.

You’re maybe wondering what the hype is about when it’s just a compilation of her blog post. Nothing extraordinary. She talks about the simplest of things, her mundane daily experiences that is not entirely different from what you’re going through. A friend once said, “Ito yung babaeng ang daming pinaghuhugutan.” And I agree. She writes about life and she writes it from the heart—and that’s what captivated her readers.

There isn’t one thing in her entries that you haven’t known yet.  It’s just that every word she says, every sentence she constructs, it’ll hit you in ways you wouldn’t think of. I can’t even count the times I’ve cursed her because what she says is true, that at one point I was in that story (or maybe, subconsciously, I still am). Ng “the one that got away”? O ng hangover after Valentine’s Day? O yung mga usapang naguumpisa lang sa mga walang kakwenta-kwentang bagay pero nauuwi sa seryosong “love and life” talk?

There is this one conversation I had with Louie that happened while we are still nursing our hangovers with Noringai’s book. We didn’t intend it to be something else but like a snow ball, it went from a simple a comment about shoes to the complexities of wanting something you can’t have. It started with Louie complimenting Ada’s shoes. I heard her say that she finds Ada’s shoes cute. I have to look and see if Ada is wearing doll shoes (she usually wears that) because you will never ever see Luisa wearing one on a regular day. It has to be rubber shoes or rubber shoes. Turns out Ada is on a, I don’t know, doll shoes that is not doll shoes? I’m not really a fan of shoes so if it’s flat then its flat, sports shoes, heels, period. Whatever.

Me: Ano yung narinig ko? Ikaw, Luisa?
Masyadong girlie.
Me: Kaya napatingin ako kasi akala ko doll shoes.
Me: Mag-doll shoes ka kasi. Yung high cut.
Louie: Hahaha!
Me: Kung may mahahanap kang ganun.
Louie: Parang sapatos na confused.
Me: Yung pinipilit na magkasya, magfit in, eh hindi naman talaga.
Louie: Korek.
Me: Size 5 ako. At ayokong bumili kapag sale. Wala akong laging size.
Me: Sigh.
If it does not fit, di kayo meant to be.

And just like Noringai’s “Wisdom from Pichi Pichi”, Louie and I both know that we aren’t talking about shoes anymore.

"It's a sad reality that you have to face and accept: Sa totoong buhay, hindi lahat ng nagmamahalan ay nagkakatuluyan. At iyong "The one that got away" mo, ay maaaring "The One" na para sa iba."

Rating this 3.5 stars. So much hype for this book.

At some point halos lahat tayo naranasan yan.

She's now on my official list of Filipino writers na iniidolize ko.

What the hell did I just read? Is this a fiction, non-fiction, or is this a blogsite? First of all, it would've been great if the author knew the kind of direction she wants to take while writing this novel. And second, while the title is catchy enough to spark some interest in a lot of readers, it would've been best as well if the author developed some kind of a plot, a twist or even an anthology of stories for the said set-up. The way in which the situations or stories were built-up, was great. It got me on my toes, and it did tug on my heartstrings a little bit, but all it did towards the end was that it just kept me hanging. It gave me hope, that towards the end, there is a happy ending for these characters that she is writing about. After all, why the hell would they be the subject of this whole book in the first place? And as the book nears its last pages, all we get is just a mere blogsite-slash-random musings from the author. If I'm gonna be honest, I don't care about the author's thoughts or how she goes about her daily routines. I care more about the characters, who she just left hanging. The characters she never gave justice to. The characters she doesn't care about more than she cares about herself and her random thoughts.

Witty, Sincere and downright honest. Noringai is a class in herself and I truly enjoyed reading through her personal collection of essays that screams RELATE NA RELATE KA TEH. Some of my favorite lines or quotes from the book:

The One that got away." Siya lang ang "The one who left" or "the one you left behind."

From The One that got away

Done reading this wonderful book by Noreen Capili. Every words, lines and quotes merely describes my life. How and why I live up my life. Para bang kilala ako ng author na to at msyado akong na hook sa kwento at sobrang bitin na bitin ako -_____- More on Lessons and Experiences ang shinare nya for everyone who might read this Walang halong ka echosan, more on REALITY, on how you will face the truth and consequences. Nakakainspired.

I want to read the book over and over again.

The book made me relate to its story. I am fully satisfied with the book because it answered most of my questions and doubts about love. Parang Kayo Pero Hindi is perfect for those who are in love, brokenhearted, and the hopeless romantic. Well said, well done! :)

"Even in a pseudo-relationship, the emotions are real...Buti sana kung pseudo pain lang mararanasan mo. Kaso hindi eh. Real pain."

Lakas maka-hugot ng librong to sobra. Halos lahat ng bagay, may realization o hugot. Pero ang catch, kahit nakakatawa, nakakarelate ka. At deep inside medyo may kirot.

I love the book. Madami akong natutunan about life.

Maganda; nakakabitin.
Meron din akong natutunan, but mostly, naalala sa pagbabasa nito.
