Blurb:
Dr. Jordan Mackenzie has been alone, focused on his career and raising his son, for many years. He's fine with that until one prickly young man's intriguing quirks trigger a sudden need to take care of someone in an entirely different manner.

Calvin Sherbrook has issues. He knows it, and he can live with it. He's just decided it's better for everyone involved if he keeps to himself. And he might have succeeded too, if it wasn't for one particularly hot veterinarian, a crazy old lady and her meddling dog.

I might be the least romantic person I know, but when I'm writing, I’m all about the happy endings and the love conquering all business. I’ll leave it to the higher talents to shock and amaze and terrorize you … or rip your heart out, if you like that sort of thing. From me, you’ll just find some good hot man lovin’ and a story that (hopefully) leaves you with a smile on your face.

After getting a glimpse of Sir Winston’s handsome mug, there was no way I was going to put off reading this story. I love the brachycephalic dog breeds, particularly pugs and bulldogs. I know they are prone to health problems and hate hot weather, but their sweet, expressive faces and dignified posture are so hard to resist.

Sir Winston is heavy-set, lazy, and he slobbers and drools. In addition to these endearing qualities, he also has a finely honed gaydar.

Dr. Jordan MacKenzie is Winston’s patient and understanding veterinarian. Not only does he have to fend off the overfriendly Winston, whose gaydar is always on, but he also has to put up with his eccentric owner, Mrs. Miller, who calls the doctor no matter what time of day or night when her dog goes missing or has a problem.

Then there’s Cal, who Winston nearly knocked over when he came to Jordan’s clinic to pick up his grandmother’s dog (that gaydar thing again).

Jordan is very interested in Cal, but Cal is resistant to his advances. Of course, Mrs. Miller spilling the beans about her dog’s matchmaking abilities didn’t help matters. And it doesn’t help that Cal is so prickly, rarely smiles or laughs, and keeps to himself pretty much.

Though Jordan and Cal are very well-developed characters, there’s a lot more to them, particularly Cal, that hasn’t been told yet. Jordan is patient, easygoing and raising a child on his own. He is also a Dominant who knows exactly what Cal needs. Cal eventually succumbs to Jordan’s charms, and their lovemaking sizzled, but he is a wounded young man and I really hope there is a sequel that will cover more of his history.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, humorous, and very sexy story.

Rating: a smiling, drooling four stars of five

The Book Report: Dr. Jordan Mackenzie, veterinarian, DILF, and single dad of a teenaged son he loves with a bone-rattling passion, meets Cal Sherbrook when daffy old Mrs. Miller's bulldog Sir Winston decides to express an (unrequited, as it happens) excitement for Cal's boots. Dr. Mac barely keeps himself from expressing a similar, and seemingly equally unrequited, excitement for Cal. Sir Winston, as Mrs. Miller screechingly informs everyone, has faultless gaydar and has clearly decided that Dr. Mac and Cal are Destined to Become One Flesh.

Hijinks ensue.

An awkward dinner, a blazing hot encounter, a misspoken word, a furious rejection, and a trip to the lumberyard later, things are looking up for everyone....

My Review: ...EXCEPT ME!!! 17,000 crummy words?! C'mon lady! Whip it up and give me the goodies!

*ahem*

That is to say, the author's keen eye for characterization and the brevity of the format she's chosen to present the story to date *significant glare over glasses* has engendered in me, and many others on her thread, a desire to read more about this menagerie.

Like, soon. *significant glare over glasses*

Free. Gay. Pets.

I mean this is a story that's free and about two gays and pets.

Not that I have gay pets I'm giving out for free. I love my lesbian dog.

------

It's a little too detailed for me with the physical descriptions. And a lot of the thoughts feel like I've read them before is lot of times already

I have my dog trained (okay it was natural she's an attention whore) to target cute guys. I wish she was like Winston and not only found cute gay guys, but Winston also holds them hostage by sitting on their feet. Best wing man ever

I'm really liking it but wish the Mc didn't have to describe every male he sees

Even though it did start off slow for me and was too descriptive at parts, by the end I loved it.

It seemed like the MC had to do all of the work and chasing. I probably would have liked that better if I knew more about Cam and why he was so emo. Also curious how he ended up a single father.

The story had a sweet build up that I really enjoyed reading. It ended too soon though and left me wanting a lot more.

The old lady was fun and crazy and Winston seemed just as crazy fun.

The kids were good. Though I assume Kody is gay or just really sensitive. Either way he's adorable. But is the mcs son gay?

Not bad for a first published work. The star of the show, Winston. 😂

Much is left unsaid. A follow-up would be lovely.

Oh, and it’s smokin hot. Good golly Molly. 🥵

Don't be fooled. That's a matchmaker extraordinaire you're looking at there.

Winston is his name. Winston the laziest bulldog this side of the Mississippi. Unless there's a couple of dudes who are lonely or in need of a little nudge from a slobbery, overweight and persistent bulldog.

He's adorable and stole the show along with his septuagenarian owner who doesn't have an inside voice, is overly demonstrative, has a Tammy Faye thing happening and whose incased in a cloud of fragrance identifiable within a block radius.

Jordan sighed and led Mrs. Miller and her meddling dog to her mile-long 1975 butter yellow Cadillac. At least the yellow of her hair matched the car better than her rouge matched her still flushed cheeks.

description

Dr. Jordan, D.V.M. and Cal owe everything to those two meddling fools. Along the way Winston might've even found himself a love connection in B, short for Brutus. Apparently, Winston likes a little D/s in his… relations as well.

Seriously, I would pay for Kim Alan's writez. That's saying something. This was lovely. It left me equal parts satisfied and craving more. What she was able to convey with Cal's character in 38 pgs floors me. Their relationship progression was realistic and I'm grateful she didn't spoon feed Cal's backstory to her readers.

Highly recommend to those who like good writing and cuddly reads with cute dogs.

3,5 Stars for a little M/M shortie about a bulldog and two men

Animal Instincts is a little story about a bulldog, a veterinarian and a shy hottie that is not completely responsive from a fling from either a fat ugly bulldog or a pined nifty doctor.
‘Jordan stumbled to a stop just as the bulldog slammed full-bodied into the back of demin-clad legs. Very nice demin-clad legs wearing boots and bowed just right...’

 photo funny-dog-pictures-psychiatrist-pug_zps46674909.jpg

A fat bulldog named Winston is phenomenal to sniff out gay guys. After a visit with Dr. Jordan discovers Winston a unknown good looking guy, Cal, in the waiting room. The dog decides immediately to like this new man. He pours him over Cal and sits on Cal's feet. The nice doctor must now entice the dog away and now he also likes what he sees ....
‘He was one small dog-tug away from landing face first in an unsuspecting - an no doubt unwelcoming - man's junk.’

A sweet and cute little hot novella - easy to read and soon forgotten but nice at the moment. Rounds up to 4 stars because I like the slobbering bulldog Winston so much. Thanks Winston you are a great matchmaker.

I Like - 40 sweet pages...

Offered FREE from the M/M Romance Group, Love is Always Write event.

2.5 stars At first I though it was ridiculous that Cal had another run-in with Winston so soon after the annoying oh-no-a-dog-is-on-my-feet-whatever-will-I-do? (Umm... move your feet?). But it turned out to be cute how the bulldog was used to constantly bring them back together with his matchmaking ways.

It was hard for me to like this story too much because I just did not like or understand Cal at all, or his appeal. He's kind of a jerk with a short-fuse. At the end of the story they allude to some of his issues but it's all too vague for my liking, and I still don't feel like I know him or that it justifies his actions. The BDSM component seemed really random, and just came out of nowhere to all of a sudden explain everything.

The scene on the couch was hot, but other than that I actually didn't like how heavily focused on sex this was from the beginning. It's not that it's erotica, far from it, it's that it is all Jordan can think about. Not only is this kind of boring but it makes their connection feel shallow to me, like that is Cal's only appeal.

It did have several funny quotes though, usually from Cal the few times he wasn't being a total douche.

Decent meet-cute between a vet who slowly whittles away the emotional walls of an intriguing but wary guy. Many loved this, but I never quite warmed up to Cal. However, mix a meddling bulldog with some light D/s overtones and you’ve got quite the hot scene on a couch. *fans self*

While I have to admit that hand-job scene was hawt AF, I'm not all that fond of the All-Knowing All-Seeing Dom trope. Cute how the Dawg basically set them up, though. (Yes, Dawg. #UGA4Life)

Well this wasn’t at all what I was expecting.

I can safely say I thoroughly enjoyed this. It turns out I can enjoy books that turn out to be more much rom-com than advertised. Honestly, I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy this one as much as I did. It was highly entertaining, with a great story and loveable characters.

Short and sweet, just what I needed.

'Animal Instincts' is an interesting look at a budding relationship that goes from hilariously funny to whoa-what-just-happened to very hot and sweet. Jordan, a dedicated vet, and Cal, a carpenter who just moved into town, meet and sparks fly. But nothing is as easy as it seems, and I definitely didn't see the twist coming until I was knee-deep in the story. The secondary characters include cute teenagers, a delightfully weird old lady, and her dog, who not only has excellent gaydar, but seems to be into matchmaking. Yes, you read that correctly. It made me laugh too. Animals and humans alike operate on pure instinct and, for once, the results are satisfactory for all concerned.

Jordan is a vet who takes his job seriously. He is professional, or tries to be, even in the face of Cal's amazing hotness. Jordan wants to get to know Cal better, and as he patiently approaches the man and figures out how to talk to him, he discovers Cal's deeper needs. They match his own perfectly, so he thinks it will all be fine. Unfortunately, it isn’t as easy as it seems.

Cal is extremely withdrawn and skittish, but he does warm to Jordan's attentions to some degree. When I did find out what was going on I really felt for him, and loved the way Jordan, once he recovered from his shock, dealt with the situation. There is definitely more of a story here, and I really hope Kim Alan will write a looong sequel.

If you like shot stories that will make you laugh about the characters' antics (both people and dogs!), if you enjoy reading about men who have to struggle a little when figuring out if and how they might fit together, and if you're looking for a read that is very hot as well as sweet, you will probably like this free short story.

This is the kind of story that leaves you happy and wishing for so much more. Seriously, a great built up for the characters, a sweet story and an amazing good Sub/Dom built up. I want to see their relationship grow, want to see Cal loose his issues. I wouldn't mind see a bit more of those two in the homedepot and of course, what about Kody? And maybe Thomas?

But first of all, I want to see Cal healing under the attentive care of his own personal doc. Please more!!

I adored this story. Fun, sexy and sweet with hints of deeper issues. From the first line I was into it, had no issues immersing myself in the story whatsoever and when I got to the end I wished there was more.

I loved how wary Cal was, how it took time for him to allow Jordan even the littlest of ways in, and even then it wasn't perfect. I love that by the end of the story it still wasn't perfect but I was left with the sense that they would be so good to/for each other and would be happy.

Jordan's son and his best friend were adorable and as for Jordan himself, I felt for him and supported him entirely throughout his attempts at getting Cal to open up and come out of his shell. I shared his worries and anxiety when things veered off from what he wasn't expecting but he didn't give up. Wonderful characters who I felt I got to know very well despite that this is a short story.

Oh. And the sex. Well. Hell yes that scene hit ALL the right spots. Very nicely done.

Definitely one my favourite stories from this year's LiAW event. I recommend it!

I really liked this short story and would have loved to see a full length story to further explore the relationship between Cal and Jordan.
Cal is only discovering what he is looking for in a relationship and Jordan thinks he is the man who can look after Cal and provide him with what he needs.
Winston the matchmaking bulldog with gaydar was also an interesting character!

Great characters, each and every one, right down to the office staff! And a for-gay-boys matchmaking bulldog was a stroke of genius! Had there been more of a back story for Cal, in particular, this could very well have been 5 Stars for me. As it is now there are just a few too many gaps.

No. No, no, no.

I thought this was going to be a very, very light-hearted, shortish M/M romance featuring a newly met couple, the usual misunderstandings, possibly a lover with a painful past and a highly improbable bulldog.
It would have been allright. Sort of.
The dog is actually so supernaturally meddling one has to think he must be an alien under cover working for an alien match-making agency looking for customers in our planet.

Jordan, one of the lovers, is way too preoccupied with his looks and the author does a rather poor job of making him likeable.
Cal has been hurt before and yet he is very eager to be hurt again. These two meet again and again with only the meddling dog as the only excuse but the fireworks are kind of wet and do not explode.

Halfway through, more or less, the author seems to have a change of heart and decides to introduce rather heavy Dom/Sub elements into her story.

A story that was far from watertight to begin with suddenly makes no sense at all with her author cramming far too many transitions in half a page.

I really do not understand why so many lady-authors think gay men to be obsessed with roles and dominance.
If they really must insist on these controversial themes, they should at least write enough pages for the psychologies involved to evolve and should take care their gay men did not feel like particularly tortured female souls in male bodies.

Another story with a bulldog! Another story with a vet! So not the same story as Call Me Burt. The bulldog in this story was named Sir Winston, Winston for short, and had this amazing ability. No, it was not "toxic flatulence"; he had "gaydar" and "matchmaking" abilities. Yep... I kid you not. The vet in this story is Dr. Jordan Mackenzie and is a bit older than a teenager, in fact he has a teenage son. Well, the story begins in Dr. J's office as he's treating Winston for having a lazy attitude. Winston's owner is a little eccentric old lady that just loves her pooch to death; she loves him so much that she can't bear to give him diet food, even if he's overweight because that would be depriving him of good stuff. I can completely understand that. Well, once Winston is released from Dr. J's examination, he runs, yes runs, out of the office to plop his big butt down on a hunky man that has entered the office. We are not aware of his amazing abilities until the "Gossip Queens" who work in Dr. J's office apprise all people present of this dog's talents; which then proceeds to disgust Dr. J and the hunky man, Cal, to no end. Although Dr. J is already head over heels in lust. The story does have more instances of Winston working his "gaydar" and making everyone laugh. I think it's a must. You have to read it to believe it. It's a good way to spend the time.

Bulldogs are my FAVORITE dogs. I believe I have every bulldog clip on YouTube Favorited. So I was so excited to read this story and was not disappointed that the bulldog was NOT just going to be a prop. He was the star! I haven't giggled this much in ages! The author's creative use of Winston, the gaydar wielding, cupid playing bulldog was hysterically funny. The way he would plop on men's feet that he sensed was gay and lead his 70 y/o owner into stores when he sensed gay men in need of a push in the right direction was so hilarious! The story of Jordan and Cal was sweet too, but Winston stole the show and made this story a 5 for me.

I couldn't get into the story, as for me it felt rather shallow. We got to know next to nothing about any of the people in this story. Yes, I know it's a short story, but a sentence here and there would have been appreciated. Cal - where does he come from, what's his story? How old is he or did I miss that? Thomas - nothing about him, besides staying with his dad. Where's the mom? And Jordan - couldn't relate to him at all. The always present Winston was getting on my nerves more and more throughout the story.

Snaeky and fun and lovely how they connect thorugh the hideous dog. I'm a dog owner so I know the appeal of having a small bundle of joy dictating your life.
Anyway, it's very vague on Cal's issue and I usually like to know what torments the characters. I think the word 'issue' was just lightly used to explain Cal's behaviour but had no real substance.
Jordan is quite the opposite, we got the vague idea of him liking the dom stuff but almost nothing about his past and how the did he have Thomas? It won't help the story but I still would have liked to know.
