Your Happily Ever After
Sometimes we need a reminder that life was never all sunshine and roses for fairy-tale princesses. Before the true love's kisses and happily ever afters, there came once upon a times of poisoned apples, spindle pricks, and impossible tasks.Speaking to the princesses of our Heavenly King, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf compares their challenges to those faced by famous fairy-tale heroines. Recounting Belle's captivity, Cinderella's servitude, and the sacrifices of the miller's daughter, President Uchtdorf emphasizes that each princess had to overcome adversity before she reached her happily ever after.Your Happily Ever After is an inspiring and uplifting message that will encourage latter-day princesses to focus on God's plan, to find happiness in service, and to embrace the blessings of the gospel.

Dieter F. Uchtdorf
16 books269 followersDieter Friedrich Uchtdorf, a former German aviator and airline executive, is a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
Uchtdorf was born to ethnic Germans Karl Albert Uchtdorf and Hildegard Else Opelt in Moravská Ostrava (German: Mährisch-Ostrau), which at the time was in the Nazi-occupied Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now Ostrava, Czech Republic). When he was a child, his family moved to Zwickau in eastern Germany while his father was away in the army, traveling through areas being bombed. Uchtdorf's family joined the LDS Church when he was young as a result of his grandmother's encounter with a church member in a soup line.
When Uchtdorf was about ten, his father's political beliefs, incongruent with communist Russian rule, earned him the label of "dissenter", thus putting their lives in danger. They fled East Germany and resettled in American-occupied West Germany.
From 1959 to 1965 Uchtdorf served in the West German Air Force.
Uchtdorf first entered the aviation industry as a pilot, then became a chief pilot and later an executive for Lufthansa Airlines. In 1975 Uchtdorf was appointed head of Lufthansa's Arizona Training School, and in 1980 he was made head chief pilot of cockpit crews. He became the senior vice president of flight operations in 1982.

This book was adapted from Elder Uchtdorf's article, "Your Happily Ever After" from the May 2010 Ensign.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about Deseret Book Company making his talk into a book with just a few pictures and selling it for $14.99? You can get access the same talk online for FREE.
It is a wonderful, well-written and uplifting book directed towards Young Women. Yet I think the message of the book can be applied to anyone.
This book was a gift to me from my family. So the messages that are written inside the book from my family members are really special to me.
I'm glad I received the book as a gift because I wouldn't have spent $14.99 for it when I could have read it online for free.

A short, sweet read (less than 20 minutes) likening life to a fairy tale: between “once upon a time” and “happily every after,” all worthwhile characters, and all people, have to go through some hard times. One I’ll pick up and read again next time I’m wondering why life is so hard.

I loved this book!!! Especially the illustrations. One day, when we build a home and decorate I want a room with these colors in them, and perhaps this book on a shelf in there.
I'm reading this to my young women on Sunday since it's my turn to teach the lesson. It's inspiring and helps put things in perspective for the girls.... that life isn't always a royal ball. But there'll be one at the end of it all.

What a sweet, fast read. A reminder of our own fairy tale and how we too can live happily ever after.

This book is short, and not difficult at all to read.
It had a great message. It’s comparing fairy tales to our lives. For example, it talks about how we will have to overcome some hard things in our lives, just like characters in fairy tales. It’s a short, but great book.
“Sandwiched between their ‘once upon a time’ and ‘happily ever after,’ they all had to experience great adversity. Why must all experience sadness and tragedy? Why could we not simply live in bliss and peace, each day filled with wonder, joy, and love? …In stories as in real life adversity teaches us things we cannot learn otherwise. Adversity helps to develop a depth of character that comes in no other way.”

President Uchtdorf compares our lives to his favorite stories, those that begin with "once upon a time" and end with "happily ever after." In each of these stories, the main character faces difficult challenges before receiving their happily ever after.
Favorite quotes:
"Isn’t it remarkable to know that our eternal Heavenly Father knows you, hears you, watches over you, and loves you with an infinite love? In fact, His love for you is so great that He has granted you this earthly life as a precious gift of “once upon a time,” complete with your own true story of adventure, trial, and opportunities for greatness, nobility, courage, and love. And, most glorious of all, He offers you a gift beyond price and comprehension. Heavenly Father offers to you the greatest gift of all—eternal life—and the opportunity and infinite blessing of your own “happily ever after.” But such a blessing does not come without a price. It is not given simply because you desire it. It comes only through understanding who you are and what you must become in order to be worthy of such a gift."
"The scriptures tell us there must be opposition in all things, for without it we could not discern the sweet from the bitter. Would the marathon runner feel the triumph of finishing the race had she not felt the pain of the hours of pushing against her limits? Would the pianist feel the joy of mastering an intricate sonata without the painstaking hours of practice?
In stories, as in life, adversity teaches us things we cannot learn otherwise. Adversity helps to develop a depth of character that comes in no other way. Our loving Heavenly Father has set us in a world filled with challenges and trials so that we, through opposition, can learn wisdom, become stronger, and experience joy."
"It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop."
"We all search for happiness, and we all try to find our own “happily ever after.” The truth is, God knows how to get there! And He has created a map for you; He knows the way. He is your beloved Heavenly Father, who seeks your good, your happiness. He desires with all the love of a perfect and pure Father that you reach your supernal destination. The map is available to all. It gives explicit directions of what to do and where to go to everyone who is striving to come unto Christ and “stand as [a witness] of God at all times and in all things, and in all places.”4 All you have to do is trust your Heavenly Father. Trust Him enough to follow His plan."

First off, Dieter F. Uchtdorf is one of my favorite people in the world! I love his stories, his character, and view on life.
Last spring, I was in a production called "Happily Forever After". In the show we had a young girl trying to do her homework and had to write a paper about how Fairy Tales had impacted her life or something to the sort. Her attitude is negative and jaded, as many of us have become in this harsh world that we live in. When her fairy Godmother shows up and turns her perspective around. Teaching her of the valuable lessons that we can all take from Fairy Tales.
From this production I received this wonderful book as a thank you for my participation. What a wonderful treat to have my lesson extended by Elder Uchtdoft as he takes a similar path of teaching.
He goes on to explain how we learn to love the Heroines and Heroes with their strength of character. But that they didn't become heroes by living perfect lives, but by going through trials and tribulations, facing their fears and giants. That their stories became great stories because of the challenges they faced and how the fought and strove to be valiant in all that they faced, whether big or small.
"Sandwiched between their 'once upon a time' and 'happily ever after,' they all had to experience great adversity. Why must all experience sadness and tragedy? Why could we not simply live in bliss and peace, each day filled with wonder, joy and love?

Again, fabulous read!!! I only shared one little piece of course, it's well worth reading the rest! It was a quick and easy read that I finished in one setting. Great to read weakly really - keep things in perspective. ;) Highly recommend to EVERYONE! Enjoy! :)

“Favorite quote from the book:
"I understand that, at times, some may wonder why they attend Church meetings or why it is so important to read the scriptures regularly or pray to our Heavenly Father daily. Here is my answer: You do these things because they are part of God's path for you. And that path will take you to your 'happily ever after' destination."

Though aimed at teenage girls, there is still a lot of ideas/advice that we all could use. It looks at "your happily ever after" from a very spiritual sense. It really gave me some insight despite being older than the targeted audience.

I really needed to hear the message that President Uchtdorf had for me in this book. No good thing comes without adversity. I need to better myself in order to receive the blessings I have been promised. I loved this book!

This is based on President Uchtdorf's conference talk with the the same title. It is one of my favorite talks because it reminds me to keep moving forward despite trials. The happily ever after comes after all the hard times. This version is beautiful and has pictures with it. Great book!

Blessings and Promises
Elder Uchtdorf always addresses his love and that of the Savior towards all women, however to understand the gospel and the plan of happiness, his words which emulate the words of the Savior being to many feelings of hope, faith, unconditional love and all that will help you to gain this understanding of what and how life can be through knowledge and acknowledgement of the Blessings and Promises and how to receive them daily. This book is short and filled with wonderful news and guidance to help the reader appreciate life and it's all encompassed webs towards our own happy ever after.

This book isn't bad! But I don't think you need to go out of your way to purchase it. It is very short and consists of many stories and teachings found in Elder Uchtdorf's talks and addresses - which can all be read for free. It is also a little outdated with the old YW theme and For Strength of Youth. I also wouldn't say the art found within is remarkable in any way either, the style is very 2010s. I can just imagine wondering where my faux flower hair clips, and paper beaded necklace got to. Haha! Again not bad, but I'd recommend instead just reading his talk with the same title.

Beautiful Message
This is a beautifully written message of encouragement for today's women. Following the advice given will only bring blessings and happiness. It's a great reminder that adversity is a great teacher and we can have peace during trying times if we recognize our own worth at all times.

The words of Dieter F. Uchtdorf always leave me feeling motivated to improve and become more like our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Needed this reminder yesterday that we are living our own "once upon a time" and on the way to our "happily ever after" there will be challenges and adversity - that is part of the story/plan.

I absolutely love this! Using fairy tales as an example, Dieter F Uchtdorf tells us what gets us from our own "once upon a time" to "happily ever after". As I read it I couldn't help but think how perfect a gift it would be for any teenage girl out there!

Good booklet, but short
I like Elder Uchtdorf's writing and speaking style, so when I saw this was available as a free download, I snatched it up. While this piece is meant more for the teenage market, there is quite a lot that an adult woman can apply to her life.

I love Uchtdorf's book. They are like expanded Conference talks. Always short, sweet and to the point. This one he is soaking to the female youth of the world. Your happily ever after comes after trials, and they are worth it.

I do love and admire Dieter Uchtdorf and yet again I wasn't disappointed with his inspiring counsel and encouragement. Whatever your belief system, if you want loving, inspiring encouragement, grab this book, you won't regret it.

This is an abridged version of a talk, but Elder Uchtdorf is one of my favorite speakers, so I loved this short and sweet little gift book of his words. And yes, I totally read it with his German-accented voice in my head. I also love his piloting metaphors, and this books has a good one.
