Alba Spencer thought her past in Romania and the dark magic that haunted it was behind her forever. She is one of the first female barristers now, safe in London. But London has its dark side, too. A man called the Ripper stalks the midnight streets. There are rumors that her hated stepmother has found her again, suggestions that the nightmares of her childhood are returning. And with them appears the cursed Gypsy boy she once loved, grown into a man more seductive and more terrifying than she ever could have dreamed. . .
Dimitri Grigorescu has become a surgeon, a gentleman—and a vampire. The lusts that drive his body are scarcely under control, and even he does not truly know what he is capable of. To fight evil and confusion, Alba must rely only on her wits—and a desire that overwhelms her doubts. . .
Praise for Beauty and the Wolf
"Dynamic and sensual, paranormal readers will gobble up this sexy read." —Donna Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Midnight's Warrior
" Beauty and the Wolf is a deliciously dark retelling of the classic tale that will make you fall in love all over again." —Erin Quinn, author of The Five Deaths of Roxanne Love
I tried with all my might to push though and keep going with this story. At the end of the day, it wasn't so much the writing that was weak and not working, it was the whole story and the voice in which the author told a vampire story for me.
I like my vampires evil, bad, and very alpha with a hint of a Sadist just ready to burst from the surface. What I got was a very whiny, very Edward Cullen like vampire that was very self loathing and unwilling to really embrace what he was.
This not only was a vampire tale, but a Snow White retelling, and I wasn't really clicking with that idea. The 'evil' queen, wasn't bad enough. I mean the evil queen and Maleficent are notorious baddies, and I just didn't quite get where the evil was coming from. I know the evil step mother was there, I just wasn't afraid of her.
As a whole, I didn't quite mesh with the authors voice. I wasn't getting what I expected, and I had to end the story where I did.
*I received a copy of this book from Kensington Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
This book was pretty different. I think it was fabulous. I finished it faster than I thought I would, so I don’t know if that is because it wasn’t that long, or I just got that caught up in the story that I didn’t notice. I started it in the morning and I was finished before dinner. I didn’t get anything done around my house, but that’s ok, I like to read more than I like to clean!
This book follows Alba Spencer, her relationships with her fiancée, Teddy, and a former love, Dmitri, who has unexpectedly appeared in London within the same social circles as Alba. It also follows the story of Jack the Ripper, who is terrorizing London at the same time. This story is set in the late 1800’s. I love history, so I enjoyed that aspect of the world building. Miles did a good job of making her scenes easy to see and understand. She made it possible to feel the scenes as well as see them as though you were watching a movie or really experiencing the scenes instead of reading a book.
There are obviously aspects of this book that go along with the Snow White fairy tale, as the title suggests. Instead of the 7 dwarves, Alba lives in a house full of redhead girls that were friends of her family. Her mother died when she was a baby, and her stepmother, is the stereotypical “evil stepmother” and Hell-bent on being the most beautiful woman around. She had the whole magic mirror thing going on as well. She is determined to kill Alba (whose name means Snow White in Romanian, her parents thought they were being clever) just as she killed Alba’s father.
There are some parallels with the story of Dracula as well, but with some twists. Instead of the lead female being interested in medicine, she wants to be a lawyer. Her fiancée is also a lawyer instead of a journalist, as in Dracula. There is a very rich man that shows up in town (Dmitri) and sweeps the female lead, Alba, off her feet. Even as she resists, she has a hard time convincing herself that she should stay with Teddy, her fiancé. Dmitri is a doctor. There is also the whole vampire turning into bats and mist thing that doesn’t happen as often in modern vampire stories.
While all of this is going on, Jack the Ripper is terrorizing London. There isn’t a lot of detail and spotlight put on this, as it is just a side story that runs along with the story to give it a little bit more depth and the Jack the Ripper events play an important role later on in the book.
There are some pretty steamy romantic scenes as well. That girl must be ready to get it on! I did have to laugh a few times because some of the phrases that Miles used to describe the girly bits were pretty corny and funny in my opinion. “damp petals” and “the bead hidden in her petals” is not a phrase I think I have ever heard. I really can’t fault the author for this though. There really are only so many ways you can describe sexual organs and activities before it gets repetitive or corny. So she did what she had to do but it still made me crack up. She used the term “petal” to describe vagina 4 times, and used it once to describe Alba’s “petal soft cheek”, which once again cracked me up because at that point I automatically saw “vagina soft cheek” instead. If you are going to refer to a sex organ or act in a new way, please make sure you don’t use it in the same book referring to someone’s face.
While Snow White and the Vampire obviously share many similarities with Snow White, and Dracula, it does have its own plot twists and turns, and its own ideas. Despite its intentional similarities, it also has plenty of fresh and new ideas to balance it out. It’s not the same stories and the characters have different personalities in this book than in the originals. The climax is very good but that’s all I’m going to say about it because I don’t want to ruin it.
The cover is a little bit cheesy to me, but it doesn’t affect what is on the inside of the book, so I can happily let that go. After I laugh at it for a minute because it’s just that funny to me. But he’s wearing a cape! With pants! And NO shirt! Sorry. I’m ok now. I just had to get that out of my system. It’s definitely not the worst cover I’ve ever seen. Or even the worst I’ve seen this week.
My only other real complaint was that I didn’t feel like the Egyptian curse they were trying to prevent from happening really didn’t seem to add much of anything to the story, I don’t think it would have been a negative thing to have left it out of the book entirely.
I would gladly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal romance with historical elements. There is plenty of conflict and angst to go along with the romance so it doesn’t sit there as just a romance book that happens to have a vampire in it. You should read it and see for yourself. When you are done, be sure to stop by and say hi and tell me what you thought of it! And remember, anytime you leave a review for an author on Goodreads or Amazon, and angel gets its wings! Oh wait, wrong movie. Um, ok, maybe no angel wings, but you can make an authors day letting them know you enjoyed their book.
I was able to get a copy of Snow White and the Vampire through Netgalley, and since I really enjoyed the first one Beauty and the Wolf, I was hoping I would get the same fun out of this upcoming release. Snow White and the Vampire is the second in the series, and is to be released mid December. Snow White and the Vampire, is a different setting than the first book. This story is about a young woman, who has come a long way from when she first fell in love in Romania. She is in London now, away from her step mother that desires her end, and she is the first female barrister, which is a huge accomplishment, and she is very good at her job and loves it. Then a man she once knew, a man she gave everything to, arrives at a birthday party, when she is about to be engaged to a sweet young man, who has no idea of her past. Dimitri, has also come along way, although in a different way than his secret love. Dimitri is a vampire, and a doctor after years of training. Dimitri was once a lowly boy, with no chance of winning Alba's heart due to his station. Now he is a gentleman, a surgeon, and devoted to Alba and has been searching for her for years. Now that he has found her he refuses to let go, despite the fact that he is a vampire, but Alba's stepmother is trying to kill her, and he must protect her, at all costs.
This story was intense, and breathless, and full of suspense and passion. Snow White and the Vampire puts together two people that are so right for each other. They have a past, and even though some dark and dangerous events occurred, their love for each other is stronger than ever, despite the years they have been separated. In this story we see a involvement of a curse, a plot full of intrigue and danger, and a passionate love. The characters were delicious and captivates the reader. I couldn't help but fall in love with these two characters. Even though the story took a bit longer to get into, once I was fully immersed into the plot, I was succumbed to the magic of this authors storytelling. This story is a retelling of the Snow White fairy tale, with a few twists to the story that turns it into a sensual and potent read!! I recommend Snow White and the Vampire to anyone that loves a roller coaster of a ride packed full with adventure, magic, passion, and intensity. A story to remember!! LOVED EVERY THRILLING MOMENT!!
I loved the first book in the Cursed Princes series, and now finished the second book I actually love the second book even more. At first I was starting to wonder where the Snow White retelling comes in. But as soon as the story gets going, it weaves itself brilliantly into the narrative.
Dimitri was a swoon worthy hero, Alba was a fantastic strong female lead. Both characters complimented each other well, their relationship was worked on through the novel, their chemistry was amazing, sizzling. The relationship as the plot advanced was hard work so when they were together....ooh, boy was it ever hot!
The writing was top notch, and the historical elements weaved into the plot worked surprisingly well, the London setting (which admittedly isn't something I've been a fan of in the past, wanting English paranormal romances in parts of the UK other than London or Scotland) either way, mixed in with Jack The Ripper, it was pretty damn absorbing.
Who would have guessed you could mix Jack the Ripper in with a vampire paranormal romance and a Snow White retelling? It may sound like a lot going on, but the way the story came together worked really well.
Adding into that a gypsy curse and an Egyptian one. The threads came together beautifully and vividly. Mixed in with some emotional angst I was rooting for Dimitri and Alba to overcome their obstacles so they could be together after some steamy nearly but not quite encounters.
A good cast of supporting characters as well, including Alba's stepmother in the wicked queen role and a few spanners thrown into the Dimitri/Alba relationship - including a beautiful femmefetale vampire with links to Dimitri's past as another good twist in the plot.
All in all a fantastic book. Bring on the next one!
Being the fan that I am of crossovers and retellings of old tales, I figured this would be right up my alley, cheesy cover aside. I'm a sucker for Disney and I make no apologies for it. After reading it I can confidentially say that the story is definitely better than the cover suggests.
One of the challenges of doing crossovers and retellings is that the author has to make the plot flow as cohesively as possible. I felt like this was handled well for the most part though there were a few subplots I didn't care about. Above all the novel needs to be able to stand on its own and I think there was enough original content, world building and history to accomplish that. Though I know how Jack the Ripper, Snow White, and Dracula end, I wasn't able to predict the direction of this book, which is a good thing.
While the story was enjoyable, I thought the actual characters were fairly flat and I wasn't totally invested in the romance. It was nice to see Alba Spencer's character as a barrister (a type of lawyer if you didn't know) and in a position to solve problems, but it just wasn't as compelling as I was hoping it would be for the majority of the novel. Her position does become more relevant and interesting toward the end, but by then it was too little too late for me. Dmitri's inner turmoil got a little tiresome at times as well, but his position as a surgeon leads to a few interesting plot twists.
If you plan to give this a shot keep in mind that this book is the second novel in this series, but it is written as a standalone. I haven't read the first book, but it's completely different and features different characters.
I was given this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.
Alba Spencer met and fell in love when she was just 14 years old to Dimitri Grigorescu who was a 16 years old and gypsy. It didn’t matter to Alba that she was a rich girl and he was a poor gypsy, they did everything that summer together and in hopes of escaping her cruel step mother they had planned to run away together but as you know life never goes as planned. Due a dare from Simona, a gypsy girl that Dimitri has grown up with, Alba and Dimitri are torn apart.
Alba did eventually run away to escape though and is now in London. Alba is now 25, she has changed her name in hopes that he step mother doesn’t find her and she is one of the first female barristers. She has a promising career ahead of her and a man whom is completely smitten with her. All of that changes though when Dimitri walks back into her life. Dimitri is now an up and coming doctor but he has a secret that he must keep.
This book is a cross between Snow White, (complete with the evil step mother, magic mirrors and poisoned food) Dracula, (the old ones that turn into bats and mist that hypnotize their victims) also added in is Jack the Ripper so you have a complete murder, mystery, love triangle thing going on.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and while it is part of a series it can be read as a stand-alone book. I look forward to reading more from this author.
This book is a mash of Snow White, Dracula and Jack the Ripper. Alba, Dimitri and Simona knew each other as children growing up in Romania. Alba, from a wealthy family while Dimitri and Simona are gypsy's from the same group. Alba and Dimitri become childhood sweethearts and become entangled in a dare put forth by Simona which endangers all their lives, puts them all under a curse and rips them apart from each other. Alba also has an evil stepmother bent on killing her because of her beauty.
Alba escapes to England and has become the first female barrister. At a party thrown by her boyfriend Teddy to celebrate the good fortunes of a friend, Drake Griffin, Alba comes face to face with Dimitri and her past comes rushing back to haunt her.
This book contains old style vampires, ones who turn into bats, hypnotise, flowing capes and coffins. Also is Alba's evil stepmother who personifies the evil step mother in Snow White, complete with magic mirror, and poison food. Thrown into this mix is the story of Jack the Ripper. This may all sound a bit much but it somehow works. I rather enjoyed the old fashion vampire character of old for a change.
This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone story as it does finish at the end.
This book was provided to me as an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in place of an honest review.
Alba Spencer has moved from Romania to London after the death of her father and the boy that she loved. She is on the run from her wicked step mother. She found out that she practiced the black arts and wanted to kill her. She lost the boy she loved because she couldn't save him.
Dimitri Grigorescu is a gypsy who was given another chance from a doctor to make something of himself. Ever since the night he was dared to dig up the grave of a vampire by his friend. He has been trying to protect Alba. He loved her since the day he first seen her. Now he is in London and he knows he should stay away from her but he can't. There is a curse that will either kill them or turn her into what he is, a vampire.
I grew up reading Snow White and she was my favorite princess. When I saw that this was about the princess I have always loved and a vampire I had to read it. I wasn't disappointed. I loved this story and the curse is an added bonus. It also had Jack the Ripper in it and I just had to find out who he was and if these two people would be able finally give into the love that they both felt.
I was glad that I took the time to read this book and I can't wait to read more.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who stepmother was evil. While as a young child, the little princess met her prince. The two of them fell in love until one night the prince was attacked while saving the princess. While the prince is being cared for, the princess's family forbid her from ever seeing her again and move her far, far away from him.
Fast forward to years later, the prince and princess meet at a party. A cursed necklace and Jack the Ripper threaten to tear the couple apart.
I love, love this series. I love the idea of cursed princes rather the princesses. Of course with the necklace you never really know which direction the story might take you.
I loved the idea of this one containing Jack the Ripper. I will say I was surprised to find whom the Ripper was. It never really crossed my mind in the least that it could be this particular character simply because the character seemed so "nice". I suppose next time I shouldn't simply rule out the character anymore now.
I cannot wait to see what the next book will contain!

This is such a good twist on the old fairytale! Dimitri just seemed like a great man who happened to fall upon the malicious ways of Simona and Ileana, who were your typical conniving witches of sorts! Although he does go out of his way to try to protect Alba he does fail but not quite in the way you would think. For he also succeeds in protecting her too, just not in the round about way he thought!
Alba was a very strong-willed woman and very independent for her day & age. She knew what she wanted and went for it, and she also felt guilt for sending the one woman to her death. But as the book progresses she becomes stronger than she was and eventually stands up to the fatal murderer. All in all I loved the story it was different and intriguing.
Interesting retelling of Snow White. Who would have thought to throw Jack the Ripper and Vlad the Impaler in the mix. I liked that Alba (Snow) was intelligent and independent.
New reinterpretation of the story of Snow White, which, if I have to tell the truth,I was notai eager. If it wasn't for the fictional stepmother/witch complete with her mirror, title aside, I wouldn't have understood that it was about Snow White.
And with them appears the cursed Gypsy boy she once loved, grown into a man more seductive and more terrifying than she ever could have dreamed… Dimitri Grigorescu has become a surgeon, a gentleman—and a vampire. The lusts that drive his body are scarcely under control, and even he does not truly know what he is capable of. To fight evil and confusion, Alba must rely only on her wits—and a desire that overwhelms her doubts…
I had just forgotten that between our Snow White/barrister and Prince Charming/Vampire there is also a version of Jack the Ripper. The thing I liked least of all was the male protagonist, Dimitri, I probably have some high standards regarding vampires and find this one, inexperienced with supernatural powers, that he is imprisoned and accused of murder and saved from Snow White is definitely too much. Also the romance between him and Alba I didn't find so compelling. The London in which it's set the novel is a bit surreal, Alba can safely confide to her friends that the famous surgeon is a vampire and they all believe her instantly. Last criticism, her stepmother and Simona/vampire, Dimitri's childhood companion, go down too shortly. Positive note? I love the Gypsy folklore, curses and all this things and the book is well written in its style. Thanks Netgalley and Kensington Books for the kind preview.
“She was his soul…his everything.”–Dimitri’s thoughts
Eleven years ago, Alba ran away from her life in Romania, including her love Dimitri and her stepmother out to kill her. Now a barrister-in-training in London, she has the eye of her handsome colleague and a surprising boost to her career. But with Jack the Ripper stalking the London streets, her opinions on justice changing, and Dimitri moving to London, everything she dreams for is put to question. The trouble is, Dimitri isn’t the only one who found her…
“In that moment, Alba knew that life wasn’t about being right or wrong, just or unjust. It was about listening to one’s heart.”–Alba’s thoughts
This book read like something out of a Grimm faery tale! I couldn’t help but feel the horror while reading the story as Alba, our Snow White, is stalked by her evil step-mother! This is a creative retelling of the Snow White faery tale in which we have dark magic and vampires thrown into the mix along with the historical Jack the Ripper character! Dimitri, our prince charming, isn’t exactly charming. People are afraid of him, whispering that his odd nocturnal hours suggest something sinister and possibly deadly. He also doesn’t have at the greatest track record in saving Alba and frankly, is more likely to unintentionally lead her into trouble or require her help.
I enjoyed the paranormal elements, particularly the fact that vampires aren’t romantic creatures in this book. They’re considered cursed and a punishment and are feared by those that believe in the supernatural. Reading the book felt like watching one of the older vampire movies, before they became beautiful and ‘vegetarian.’ There’s a sense of evil about them like where they don’t see their reflection, are afraid of crosses, and can transform into bats. Oh, and there’s not just the Romanian supernatural elements (Vlad Dracul’s legacy and those that served him), there’s also an Egyptian curse for our poor leads to worry about!
While I found the story entertaining, particularly the weaving with the original Snow White faery tale, I would have enjoyed more characterization with Alba and Dimitri so that I could really get to know them. Since they loved each other as young teens, the past is the past so we don’t get to see them falling in love. Instead, we have Dimitri’s undying devotion (ooh, pun) and Alba being torn between the two men that love her. There were so many times that I didn’t see why he loved Alba so much since she kept pushing him away and didn’t seem interested in even knowing the present day him (and that’s before she knew he sprouted extra long canines, which I think was bad that he kept that tidbit a secret from her). On the other hand, we can see how sweet her present beau Teddy is, and I actually felt really bad for him and was kinda rooting for him.
As for the plot, you knew where it was going since it’s a Snow White retelling, but there were still some shockers for me. For the romance heat level, I’d say it was about medium-high with the love scenes, which seemed out of place because of what I thought about the characters (repeating the previous note that I didn’t seem to know them) although there is one scene that was helped along with some black magic (so that one’s understandable) and then of course the HEA love scenes. Overall, if you enjoy the Snow White faery tale and vampires with the good ole horror feel, check this one out!
(Originally posted on my blog; I received a copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.)
I thought there was so much I was going to enjoy about this book. The notion of classic fairy tales being reworked with additional paranormal elements, in this case, vampires, seemed like it should be a winning combination. Unfortunately, I lost it at the phrase “stone-hard erection” and was unable to take the book seriously after that. I know sex scenes can be difficult to navigate, trying to tread that fine line between what is sexy and what is unintentionally hilarious, but I spent most of this book giggling like a mad schoolgirl at the sex scenes. He just kept leveling up. Or when that wasn’t happening, I was turning my nook sideways wondering exactly how that was supposed to be working from a biological perspective. That may have been a case of alternating between actual terms and purple prose that sometimes made it difficult to figure out who was touching who where. Also, he kissed her ‘there.’ Although in this case it was perfectly clear where ‘there’ was, I still had flashbacks to 50 Shades. There was another disturbing part where she knows a certain biological even is about to happen that she shouldn’t know considering she was a virgin.
Her virginity was another issue that made me want to give up on this book early on. As always, there was another woman who had known the hero in her youth and the two of them had had a sexual relationship. What ended up happening was between the two possible love interests for the hero, the one was a virgin, and the other one was looked down upon not only be the characters but by the text itself for being sexually active. This virgin/whore dichotomy in literature, especially romance literature, has got to stop, because all it does is encourage the idea that women should be pitted against each other, and that the level of a woman’s sexuality defines her entire character.
Also, Dimitri, having sex with a man who is not her true love does not “corrupt her” like you so eloquently put it. Having sex with someone does not change a woman’s personality, regardless of whether it’s her true love or a random stranger she just met on the street. There is not a magic switch inside the vagina that alters everything about a person just because the wrong penis went up it.
The plotline of the cursed Egyptian amulet didn’t really add anything to the story, as it never actually needed to be resolved and just seemed like an additional excuse to cause the main characters angst. And to set up the sequel. Because, as Dimitri pointed out towards the end of the book, a revelation that took him far too long to come to, the Egyptian curse was nullified by the fact that he was already dead. Don’t even get me started on the resolution on the Jack the Ripper plot line.
Not all hope is lost. There is excellent research into Romanian culture, history, and folklore that was interesting enough to warrant the second star. And most of the problems I addressed above are problems with the society that produced the book.
Take a favorite fairytale, add a vampire, twist it with a curse, throw in a gypsy or two and top it off with a real mystery and there you have Marina Myles' Snow White and the Vampire. Let me explain
Alba (Snow White) has a wicked stepmother she escaped from Currently living with an old family friend who has Seven daughters Grew up in Romania where she fell in love with a gypsy boy Has a beautiful rival Raided "Vlad's" cemetery and unearthed a vampire Was given an ancient Egyptian necklace that is cursed Is the first female barrister in England Has to worry about Jack the Ripper
In her first book of this series Beauty and the Wolf. Ms Myles introduces us to the cursed amulet and this it seems is going to be the uniting factor. Beauty took place in Recency England and Snow takes place in Victorian England. I believe the next book, Sleeping Beauty and the Demon will take place in the Victorian era but who knows where it will be set.
I know this is not my usual format for a review but I felt this book deserved some unique attention. As this book is totally unique. Twisting all of this together takes a master storyteller and Ms. Myles does a credible job. I must admit I was not as enthralled with Snow as I was with Beauty but that has more to do with personal taste than writing ability and skill. Snow White is my least favorite Storybook character and I am not a huge fan of Vlad style vampires. So I must admit, I am grateful Ms. Myles threw these two together so I could get both of my personal dislikes out of the way.
The very fact that I enjoyed the story and the uniqueness of this couple shows how very talented Ms. Myles is. She captured the foggy, brooding, almost living streets of The Ripper's London brilliantly. While we knew who the hero was we (at least I) are totally surprised on who the villain is. The wicked Queen er stepmother all but crackles in her desire to destroy Alba. And the gypsy wanna be girlfriend does an extremely credible mean girl. There were flaws but they didn't detract from the story. I know my Vampire loving friends will really love this book *cough*Carmen*cough*.
I do admit I have a bit of a girl crush on Ms. Myles mind. The fact that she can take these rather tried and true stroke, twist them together and come up with these slightly chilling romances, while nodding to both favored fairytales and traditional horror stories, is in a word brilliant.
Definitely a series worth watching.

This review is based on the ARC of Snow White and the Vampire, provided by netgalley and is scheduled to be released on December 19, 2013
This is the second book in the series, and unfortunately it suffers from the sophomore slump. The first book did a great job of grounding the characters in the actual social aspects of the time and then went wild with the fantasy, but this book required you to suspend all belief throughout the story. The ages of the characters made no sense. Dimitri was supposed to be about 28 and Alba 26. Dimitri was an uneducated Gypsy. He met Alba when he was 16 and she was 14. He taught himself to read. How he became a rich surgeon in 12 years in a foreign country is beyond me. I realize that medical standards of schooling then were not as stringent as they are today, but the amount of money and respect he earned would have taken longer than twelve years. Also Alba as a woman over 25 and a professional barrister would have been firmly placed in the category of spinster. So the fact that Teddy and his father were so eager for her to marry Teddy and this was never mentioned was odd. Especially by her mother’s friend Mrs. T who was also so eager for that match. Someone should have said how “lucky” she was to have such a fine suitor at her age. Another ridiculously aged character was a healthy, spry, and poor 90 year old woman. In 1888 London, I don’t think so.
I was also disappointed with the Jack the Ripper tie in. It was unnecessary. Snow White is a rich story, add in the a Vampire and there is so much to work with. The author got so caught up with the Jack the Ripper aspect that she forgot to include some of the best parts of Snow White’s tale. The wicked step mother was an after thought, there were no dwarves, no long slumber, and no huntsmen, even though there where characters there who could have filled those roles. I was also disappointed that Alba and Dimitri were fighting the exact same curse as Isabella and Draven. It was boring and anti-clamatic. I don’t see myself reading any more books in this series.
Snow White and the Vampire is the second book in The Cursed Princes series by Marina Myles. Like the first book in the series, Beauty and the Werewolf, the book is a historical romance. Alba Spencer thought her past in Romania and the dark magic that haunted it was behind her forever. She is one of the first female barristers now, safe in London. But London has its dark side, Jack the Ripper stalks the midnight streets and her hated stepmother has found her again. To make things even more difficult, the gypsy boy she loves at 14 has arrived in town and brings new dangers with him. That gypsy is Dimitri Grigorescu, who has become a surgeon, a gentleman, and a vampire. He fights his nature and wants to protect Alba, even from himself, but that is easier said than done. Alba must rely only on her wits to discover what she wants, and to stay alive.
Snow White and the Vampire almost lost me a few times. In fact I put my Kindle down, ready to call it quits, only to pick it back up determined to finish. I liked Alba's character and the Snow White aspect of the story. She was smart, strong, and open minded without being gullible. The Jack the Ripper thing was good, and added some extra danger to the story since people kept going out at night unprotected. However, I think the combination of three complex story lines was just too much. When I got to around 40% complete I was ready for the story to wrap up. I will say that I was surprised with who the Ripper turned out to be- but the rest rather fell flat for me. I just think there were several unnecessary bits, and while the important stuff was well done it lost its potency because of the sheer volume of extra information.
I would recommend Snow White and the Vampire to fans of Marina Myles, and for those that particularly loved Beauty and the Werewolf. If your reading list is as big as mine, and you do not fall in those categories then I would suggest skipping this book at least for now.
This book is a mixture of Victorian London, Snow White and vampires. Hell let's throw in some Romanian gypsies and Jack the Ripper as well. The book starts off with Alba and Dimitri meeting again at a birthday party that her suitor is throwing for him. After that encounter which causes her to faint we get to see their past in Romania and how they met. It turns out as a sixteen year old boy he was spying on her house to get a look at her. And low and behold they end spending about a month together and they fall in love. But it's not meant to be as her family is leaving the area after five weeks. He ends up giving her a cursed necklace (the same necklace from the first book). They also have a second curse put on them when they disturb the grave of Vlad Dracul's mistress. They are cursed to become vampires sometime within their lifetime.
Dimitri had become a vampire two months before the start of the book and is still trying to get used to his new powers and his vampire nature. Oh and to top it all off Alba's step mother is a witch and is jealous of Alba's beauty so she is trying to kill her off. I want to know why in all Snow White stories the step mother is always jealous of her step daughter's beauty and then decides to kill her off. Even if she did kill her there would always be another girl more beautiful than her in the world. Does that mean she will go on a never ending killing spree so she can be the most beautiful woman in the world? The whole concept is stupid if you ask me.
The premise of this book was an interesting concept and I actually did enjoy the book. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. And I love how the next book or a book in the future was set up as a new collector has the necklace and the matching bracelet now.
And with them appears the cursed Gypsy boy she once loved, grown into a man more seductive and more terrifying than she ever could have dreamed…
Dimitri Grigorescu has become a surgeon, a gentleman—and a vampire. The lusts that drive his body are scarcely under control, and even he does not truly know what he is capable of. To fight evil and confusion, Alba must rely only on her wits—and a desire that overwhelms her doubts…
Review:
I love retelling/re-imaginings of fairy tales and this one is a different take on Snow White (sorry no dwarfs) but we do get vampires instead, plus Jack the Ripper.
I did manage to catch that this was a second book in a series and actually read the first book before this. For those who have read more of my reviews I tend to read books out of order all the time and not on purpose. Now, these are definitely stand alone books with the recurrence of the cursed Egyptian amulet and bracelet that ties these stories together.
I enjoyed the story, it was entertaining. Some parts were a little cheesy but on the whole it was a good story. And the Author had me, I did not guess who Jack the Ripper would turn out to be until the very end.
Law student Alba Spencer chats up Dr. Drake Griffin, the new toast of London, at a party. The two discuss the rampage of 'the Leather Apron' preying on women. When they're alone, Drake tells Alba they aren't really new acquaintances and reminds her of their past relationship. Alba remembers Drake as Dmitiri, her gypsy love from her teen years and faints.
Explaining why she fainted to her roommate when they're preparing for bed after the party, Alba revisits her memories of Dimitri and their last parting. Alba also remembers her stepmother practicing black magic and vowing to kill Alba before Alba is spirited away to a new life full of her new hopes and dreams as the first female barrister.
Dimitri reminisces about his voyage from the rough edged gypsy boy Alba knew to the celebrated and refined surgeon he has become. Dimitri becomes determined to move past the threat of a curse with nasty future outcome for either of them and protect Alba in her new life. Until Dimitri finds the curse is even more intricate than he thought and he has no idea how to tell her about his new lifestyle.
Getting the elephant out of the room...such a horrid cover. This rather loose retelling comes with not one but two romantic triangles and multiple villains. The story itself is intriguing but not compelling, for my taste due to the characters not being as well developed as I would like. I also wasn't a fan of Dimitri and his self-pity and self-loathing over his lot as a cursed vampire. However, the dénouement was very good.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was packed to the brim with fairy tale, horror story, and typical London references: a cursed amulet, a forbidden castle, an evil stepmother, star-crossed lovers, Jack the Ripper, the Tower of London, and oodles of mystery.
Alba is playing the role of “Snow White” in this story. She’s got an evil stepmother and has been cursed. Dimitri is playing the role of Prince Charming (I think), if he was a vampire. If you can get on board with those ideas, you’ll really like this book. It was well written and had lots of twists and turns. Oh, and it even had some smutty good times in there (as much as old world London will give you, what with all the layers and propriety). A few stories are happening at once in this book – Jack the Ripper is hunting people, Alba is trying to escape her evil stepmother, Dimitri is trying to get away from his evil friend Somona, and they are both trying to escape some evil curse (or two).
Sadly, I don’t think this set of books is for me. I just couldn’t get on board with the many different curses and storylines that kept fizzling or counteracting one another. That being said, I don’t think that should put anyone else off from reading this book. The writing style was enjoyable and the mystery was well done (I had no clue who the killer was!). If you’re into fairy tales and vampires, this will be the perfect combination for you!
Alba has started a new life in London. She left Romania years ago trying to escape her stepmother who wants her dead and to forget her lost childhood love. She has changed her name and thought everything was going good. In London however a man called the Ripper is killing people. Alba has to face her fears when she comes face to face with Dimitri. Dimitri is the gypsy she loved as a child and she thought dead. Now her step mother has found her as well. There is a curse and Alba seems to be at the center of it. She has to figure out who to trust and who not to and how to stop the curse. Her only chance may be Dimitri who is now a surgeon and a vampire.
I really enjoy fairy tale retelling and paranormal books. I thought this sounded like a great mixture of the two. It was a good read. The plot is a good one. You have gypsies, an evil step mother, vampires, the Ripper and more. Alba is very confused at what is going on but she figures things out. While she might have given up she doesn't. Dimitri is scared of what he is and doesn't know what all he will do. He loves Alba and that has never stopped but at times he is afraid to be alone with her. They can't deny their love but are afraid of what may happen. There is a lot you learn as you read and it unravels as you turn the pages. This book is a good read but I didn't connect with it. I liked it as I read but nit the I have to see what will happen next. If you like fairytale retelling you may enjoy this one.

Alba faked her own death and left Romania because her Stepmother was out to kill her. So now she is living with a friend of her mothers and her daughters. She is trying to become the first female Barister. She has a wonderful Beau... But then she see's him. Dimitri. She doesn't recognize him as someone from her past at first as he is also going by a different name. When she does realize who he is she faints.
Dimitri has always been in love with Alba. When he got turned into a Vampire he knew the Curse placed on him, Alba and Simona was coming true. He had to find Alba to keep her safe. As Alba has to deal with not only one curse but two and both of them are because of him. He knows that he should stay away from her because of what he is, but he can't. Not only has Dimitri found Alba but her Stepmother has also.
There is a killer in the city that is targeting women. Unknown to all, the killers main fixation is Alba. Will Dimitri be able to save Alba from her Stepmother and the killer?
I'm giving this book 3.5 Hearts. I thought that it was a good book. It didn't draw me in the way I would have liked it to. It was an interesting twist on the story of Snow White and I would recommend reading.

Snow White and the Vampire is a retelling of the original fairy tale classic in a darker light. So quite naturally I thought I would love it. While I did love the thought of it, the telling could have used a little more work. In all honesty, what probably threw me off the most was the vampire legend chosen by the author; that anyone who commits suicide will become a vampire. If that were the case the world would have a LOT of vampires' on its hands. I mean, really, if it were that simple to become a vampire; immortality, ever-lasting youth, strength, power, magic, the suicide rate would be rampant. I think true vampire lovers everywhere probably have a problem with that tale.
Don't get me wrong, I did at least like the characters. And the plot was also a gripping one, there was too much repeat; characters do have to remember the past, but readers do not want to recap the same scene with each character.
So for readers who just like to read fairy tales with a twist and are not too anal about their vampire legends, like me, you may enjoy this read. True vampire lovers, maybe for an in between books to read.

I read the first book in this series last year and didn't review it. I remember liking it, so I'm not sure why I didn't continue to read the rest of the series, but this one popped up as available on my "to be read" list from my local library, and I thought "Huh. Why not?" I love a good fairy tale retelling.
On the up side, I enjoyed the retelling. I like the notion of True Love's first kiss also being a vampire bite, that Prince Charming is a vampire, and that the 7 dwarfs are females. I enjoyed the gritty London setting and the rather classic vampiric abilities (mist, bats, etc).
Where it lost my interest was in the courtroom drama and the Jack the Ripper nonsense. Yes, this is key and rather pivotal to the plot, but it sort of made me shrug and read on with detached ambivalence. It didn't grip or engage me. I'm not sure what the author could have done differently and what I liked about the book, I enjoyed greatly.
But, I'm looking forward to reading more in the series, so I could happily recommend it to others, though perhaps with less enthusiasm than for other books in the series.
This book was given to me by the publisher through NetGalley for an honest review. At first this books comes across as if it is going to be Snow White with a bit more paranormal twist…. But there were really a lot of stories wrapped up in one book with this one!! At the beginning, this book was a bit slow and difficult to get into, but I kept reading… not wanting to give up, and I managed to finish it!! About 25% of the way through this book, I was able to get into it as it picked up. There were a few times where there was so much going on at once that I almost was overwhelmed, making me wish I hadn’t wanted it to pick up.. lol… But all in all, this is a very interesting read if you take the time out and put yourself into it, the stories come together nicely eventually… I give this book 3 out of 5 shields!!
2.5 Stars Hmmm well lets see. This is an interesting story with a very big twist on both Snow White and on vampires. The story held my attention. I wanted to know what was going to happen, mainly because of how unique the story is. However, the characters are not interesting in the least. I didn’t care for any of them to tell the truth.
If you are interested in the fairy tale or of the lure of vampires this is not for you. If you enjoy a oddly written historical paranormal then, hey, this might be just up your alley.

This was a cute book. It was a nice, new spin on an old theme. Young love is the first start to the story. Alba loves Dimitri who loves her back but then there is Simona who isn't happy being the third wheel. Alba also has a wicked step-mother who wants her dead. Ileana brings in an Egyptian curse and everyone has a reunion in London after 11years. Simona is still jealous. Alba and Dimitri still love each other. Ileana still wants to kill Alba and Dimitri is a Vampire. If that's not enough here comes Jack the Ripper. As I don't give out spoilers you will have to read this story and find out the ending on your own. This is a good story type story to help you forget your problems for awhile!
