Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

বাংলা সাহিত্যের এই অনন্যসাধারণ ছোটগল্প, এক নারীর আত্মপ্রকাশ, স্বাধীন চিন্তা এবং সমাজের বিরুদ্ধে তার প্রতিবাদের প্রতিচ্ছবি। গল্পের প্রধান চরিত্র মৃণাল তার স্বামীর উদ্দেশে লেখা এক দীর্ঘ চিঠিতে নিজের জীবন, অনুভূতি, সমাজের নিপীড়ন এবং নারীর অধিকার নিয়ে কথা বলেছেন। এই গল্প একদিকে যেমন নারীবাদের অন্যতম পথপ্রদর্শক, তেমনই সাহিত্যিক দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকেও এটি এক মূল্যবান সৃষ্টি।

মৃণাল এক ধনী পরিবারের গৃহবধূ, যার জীবন সংসারের চার দেয়ালের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ। স্বামী ও শ্বশুরবাড়ির অন্যদের কাছ থেকে উপেক্ষা ও অবহেলা পেয়েও তিনি নিজেকে শিক্ষিত, আত্মনির্ভরশীল এবং চিন্তাশীল মানুষ হিসেবে গড়ে তুলেছেন। তাঁর জীবনে নতুন মোড় আসে যখন শ্বশুরবাড়িতে হারানো কিশোরী বীণার সাথে তার বন্ধুত্ব হয়। সমাজের নিপীড়ন ও অবহেলার শিকার হয়ে বীণা আত্মহত্যা করে, যা মৃণালের চেতনায় গভীর রেখাপাত করে। শেষ পর্যন্ত মৃণাল তার স্বামীকে চিঠি লিখে জানিয়ে দেন যে, তিনি আর তার সংসারে ফিরবেন না; কারণ তার আত্মা মুক্তি খুঁজে পেয়েছে। এই গল্প নারীর স্বাধীনতা, আত্মপরিচয়, সমাজের রূঢ়তা এবং ব্যক্তিস্বাতন্ত্র্যের এক শক্তিশালী দলিল।

এই গল্প কেবলমাত্র এক নারীর বিদ্রোহের গল্প নয়, এটি এক নতুন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির জন্মদাতা। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের এই গল্প নারীবাদী চিন্তাধারার বিকাশে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রেখেছে এবং বাংলা সাহিত্যে এক অমর সৃষ্টি হিসেবে চিরকাল পাঠকদের অনুপ্রাণিত করে যাবে।

"আমার যে রূপ আছে সে কথা ভুলতে তোমার বেশিদিন লাগে নি।কিন্তু,আমার যে বুদ্ধি আছে সেটা তোমাদের পদে পদে স্মরণ করতে হয়েছে।ঐ বুদ্ধিটা আমার এতোই স্বাভাবিক যে তোমাদের ঘরকন্নার মধ্যে এতোকাল কাটিয়েও আজও সে টিকে আছে।মা আমার এই বুদ্ধিটার জন্যে বিষম উদবিগ্ন ছিলেন,মেয়েমানুষের পক্ষে এ এক বালাই।যাকে বাধা মেনে চলতে হবে,সে যদি বুদ্ধিকে মেনে চলতে চায় তবে ঠোকর খেয়ে খেয়ে তার কপাল ভাঙবেই।কিন্তু,কী করবো বলো।তোমাদের ঘরের বউয়ের যতটা বুদ্ধির দরকার বিধাতা অসতর্ক হয়ে আমাকে তার চেয়ে অনেকটা বেশি দিয়ে ফেলেছেন,সে আমি এখন ফিরিয়ে দিই কাকে।তোমরা আমাকে মেয়ে-জ্যাঠা বলে দুবেলা গাল দিয়েছো।কটু কথাই হচ্ছে অক্ষমের সান্ত্বনা ; অতএব সে আমি ক্ষমা করলুম।"

সমাজ-সংস্কারকে বৃদ্ধাগুলি দেখিয়ে নারীর জয়ধ্বনির গল্প।সময়ের থেকে অনেক এগিয়ে,অনেক স্মার্ট ভঙ্গিমায় সুলিখিত রচনা।

I feel unqualified to comment on this story, it is very powerful and leaves you with Mrinal's voice in your head. The wife's letter is a journey of a woman's voice shattering the boundaries of being a wife, a daughter in law, rising above the confinements of the antar mahal. It is a story of life defeating society and its rules. Some of the images used to tell this story deserve repeated readings. The hindi translation manages to retain a lot of the culture-specific nuances, but the English version has done a very good job with the images. If you can't read the story in bangla, I would recommend reading both the translations. Overall this is one of my favorite stories by Tagore, certainly one of the most powerful.

In this letter penned by Mrinal to her husband, we are offered a glimpse at the unpleasant story of patriarchy that shackled both her mind and soul. Despite its short length, the letter allows you to empathize with all the three women in this story.

It's heartbreaking to imagine the sufferings of Bindu and extremely painful that how even after a century of this story being written, it still stands relevant in many parts of our society today.

It's amazing how Tagore- the feminist, in this short letter, makes you empathize with Mrinal, her suffering, and the dire state of women in the early 20th Century. It's unfortunate that this letter is relatable and relevant today, 103 years after it was written.

The narrative, filled with brilliant imagery and beautiful verse, takes you through an middle/upper class Bengali family in Calcutta.

দুই চার দিন আগে এক বন্ধু বলছিল দেখলি একজন মেয়ে হয়েও কীভাবে ঝগড়া করে!! অথচ যেই প্রসঙ্গে এই কথা সে বলছে সেই বিষয়ে মানুষ মাত্রই কথা বলবে বলে আমার মনে হয়েছিল। শুধু মেয়ে হয়েও প্রতিবাদ করায় আমার বন্ধুটির চোখে লেগেছিল। কথাগুলো বলার প্রাসঙ্গিকতা অবশ্যই রবীন্দ্রনাথের লেখা ``স্ত্রীর পত্র"।

এতো ছোট লেখা অথচ কী সাংঘাতিক ভাবেই না সারাটা বিকেল নাড়া দিয়ে গেল। যেই সমাজের গল্পটা শুনালেন, সেই সমাজে মৃণাল যেভাবে একজন বিন্দু'র জন্য লড়াই করে গেলেন তা এককথায় অনবদ্য। আজকের এই সমাজেও যে মৃণাল'দের একটু বেশি ``বুদ্ধি" হজম করে নিতে সমস্যা হয় তা পাতায় পাতায়ই চোখে পরে।

যেদিন গল্পটা রেকর্ড করে পাঠিয়েছিলি সেদিন ই ভেবে রেখেছিলাম কোন এক বিশেষ দিনের ক্লান্ত ভরদুপুরে না হয় শুনে নিব। আজকের দিনটা তাই একদম মানানসই।
তোমার মায়া মায়া কন্ঠে গল্পটা উপভোগ্য হয়ে উঠেছে সহস্রগুণে।
মেজোবউ এর মধ্যে কেনো জানি তোমার প্রতিচ্ছবি খুঁজে পেলাম, বিন্দুর মত উটকো অপরিচিতার জন্য দুঃখ পাওয়া, তাকে দেখেশুনে রাখা, তার জন্য হৃদয়জুড়ে ভালোবাসা জমিয়ে রাখা এবং তার শেষ সিদ্ধান্তটুকু, এসকল কিছু আমাকে বার বার তোমার কথাই মনে করিয়ে দিচ্ছিল।

গল্পটা অনেক আগে পড়েছিলাম৷ এরপর শ্রদ্ধেয় ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষের কণ্ঠে শুনেছি। অনেকদিন পর আজ আবার শুনে মনে হলো দুটো কথা লিখে রাখি।
তবে লেখা নিয়ে নয়, আজকের প্রশংসা ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষের গল্প বলা নিয়ে। মানুষটা লিঙ্গ-গঠনের সব ছক ছাপিয়ে যে আবেগ কণ্ঠে তুলে নিয়েছেন, স্বয়ং রবীন্দ্রনাথ বেঁচে থাকলে হয়তো তার চোখ দুটিও ভিজে আসতো।
বেঁচে থাকুক জীবন, জীবনের যত আবেগ, জীবনের যত অভিনয়!

Written more than a century ago, A Wife's Letter manages to poignantly capture the current female experience of the patriarchy. Tagore brings all his talents alive in this novella, composed of Mrinal's heartfelt letter to her husband- his feminism, vivid imagery, and nuanced understanding of life.

Authors, and readers, often talk about how difficult it is for the former to script a leading character of the opposite gender. And to give such a character an authentic voice without relying on lived experience. But Tagore has always shattered this notion; his leading ladies are memorable, searingly honest, and all too human. I've seen few female writers empathise and come through the way he has with Mrinal and my personal favourite Tagore heroine, Chokher Bali's Binodini.

Mrinal, with her intelligence, insight, and compassion, is one of Tagore's best loved heroines, and has quickly become one of my all time favourite literary characters. Distraught by Bindu's suicide after multiple forced, unhappy marriages, Mrinal takes a decisive and courageous stand. Writing to her husband about this, she also shares some hard hitting insights that still ring true. Some of my favourites include:

"So even with the greatest beauty, the most perfect virtues, a woman’s self-doubt can never be dispelled."

"Your anger increased. And meanwhile Bindu’s age kept increasing too. This natural progression embarrassed all of you to an unnatural degree."

"You, with your male minds, did not ever hesitate to preach this story, a story of the world’s vilest cowardice; and for the same reason—even though you’d been granted the dignity of human shape—you could be angry at Bindu without feeling the least discomfort.

My heart burst for Bindu; for you I felt boundless shame.

I was only a village girl, and on top of that I had lived so long in your house—I don’t know through what chink in your vigilance God slipped me my brains. I just couldn’t bear all your lofty sentiments about woman’s duty."

"I’ve seen the worth of a woman in this world. I don’t need any more."

Bindu lived on through Mrinal's escape.
Bindu was the ash that kept Mrinal's fire alive and safe.
Bindu, Bindu, Bindu!

Yes, Mrinal is the protagonist, yes, Mrinal is the voice, but Bindu catalyses her like a withered, dry, lifeless bunch of twigs to the wildfire. She's like the silent co-author of this letter, and she surely has her credits due.

What a juxtaposition!

Bindu's older sister, the subservient, portrayed how women were actually treated in that time, only as a relation and not an individual. She doesn't have a name in the story, just a relation to what's relevant and that's how we know her.

The trio is complete in itself; Bindu's Sister, the subversive slave whose punishment is to live her life dictated by her family, Bindu, the victim of her family, and Mrinal, the one who defeated her family.

Mrinal, the one who won; for herself, for Bindu, for Bindu's Sister, and for all the people who read her story.

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের এই ছোটগল্পটি প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয়  প্রমথ চৌধুরী সম্পাদিত সবুজপত্র মাসিক পত্রিকার চতুর্থ সংখ্যায়। রচনার কালপঞ্জী বিচার করলে দেখা যায়, স্ত্রীর পত্র চলিত গদ্যরীতিতে লেখা রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের প্রথম ছোটগল্প। গ্রন্থাকারে এর প্রথম মূদ্রণ গল্প সপ্তক গ্রন্থে হলেও পরবর্তীতে এটি গল্পগুচ্ছ, প্রথম খন্ডের অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়। 
কলকাতার সাতাশ নম্বর মাখন বড়ালের গলির কোন এক বাড়ির মেজো বউ  মৃণালের জবানীতে তার স্বামীর কাছে চিঠির আকারে লেখা এই গল্পটি। শ্রীক্ষেত্রে বা পুরী তীর্থে গিয়ে মৃণাল তার পনেরো বছরের বিবাহিত জীবনের হতাশা, বঞ্চনার কথা লিখেছিল তার স্বামীকে। সেই স্বামীটির নাম আমরা জানতে পাই না, যেমন জানতে পাই না  সাতাশ নম্বর মাখন বড়ালের গলির কোন বাড়ির মেজো বউ ছিল মৃণাল। তবু একটা চিঠিতেই লেখা হয়ে গেছে মৃণালের পনেরো বছরের বিবাহিত জীবন শুধু না প্রায় গোটা জীবনেরই গল্প। সেই গল্প একা মৃণালেরও নয়, সেসময় বা শুধু সেসময় বলি কেন সর্বকালের দুঃখিনী নারীর জীবনকথা।
মাত্র বারো বছর বয়সে বিয়ে হয়েছিল মৃণালের। অজ পাড়াগাঁয়ের মেয়ে সে, তবু কলকাতা শহরে তার বিয়ে হয়েছিল শুধু তার রূপের জোরে। যে বাড়িতে মৃণালের বিয়ে হয়েছিল, সে বাড়ির বড় বউয়ের রূপের অভাব মেজো বউকে দিয়ে পূরণ করবেন এই ছিল তার শাশুড়ির জিদ। তাই বাঙাল দেশের দূর্গম পাড়াগাঁয়ের মেয়েটিরও বিয়ে হয়ে যায় কলকাতার সাতাশ নম্বর মাখন বড়ালের গলির কোন এক বাড়িতে। সেই রূপের কদর অবশ্য কেবল বিয়ে পর্যন্তই ছিল, এমনিতে সে বাড়ির অন্দর মহলের বাসিন্দাদের আলাদা কোন কদর কখনোই ছিল না। তবু এর মধ্যেই মৃণাল ছিল আলাদা, তার ছিল সম্ভ্রম করার মতো এক ব্যক্তিত্ব। মৃণাল লুকিয়ে কবিতা লিখতো, সে খবর বাড়ির লোকেরা অবশ্য জানতো না, জানলে হয়তো বিদ্রুপেরও অন্ত থাকতো না।  যে অন্যায় অন্যরা লক্ষ্যই করতো না, যে অবিচার অন্যদের হৃদয়ে আঘাত করতো না, সেগুলোর প্রতিবাদ কিংবা প্রতিরোধের চেষ্টা করেছিল মৃণাল। সফল সে হয়েছিল এমন বলা যাবে না, তখনকার রক্ষণশীল সমাজে হাত-পা তো তার বাঁধাই ছিল আরও লক্ষ লক্ষ নারীর মতো। তবু মৃণাল দমে যায় নি, চেষ্টার ত্রুটি করে নি কখনো।
তখনকার বাঙালি মধ্যবিত্ত সমাজে একটা পরিবর্তনের জোয়ার এসেছিল, স্বদেশী আন্দোলন বা সমাজ সংস্কার তখন পুরোদমে চলছে। কিন্তু মৃণালের প্রাচীনপন্থি, রক্ষণশীল পরিবারটি সেসবের ধার ধারতো না, এড়িয়েই চলতো এসব পরিবর্তন। তবু সেই বাড়িতেও মৃণাল ছিল সকলের চাইতে আলাদা, অন্যরকম। মৃণালের একটি মাত্র সন্তান জন্মের পর পরই মারা গিয়েছিল। অসুস্থ মৃণালকে দেখতে এসে ইংরেজ ডাক্তার সে বাড়ির অন্দরে এসে আশ্চর্য হয়েছিলেন এবং আঁতুড়ঘর দেখে বিরক্ত হয়েছিলেন। অথচ বাড়িটির সদরে এক টুকরো বাগান ছিল, ঘরে সাজসজ্জা- আসবাবপত্র ও কম ছিল না। তবু সে কেবল বাইরে। বাড়ির অন্দর ছিল হাওয়াহীন,রোদহীন এবং অন্ধকার। অথচ সেখানে থেকেও মৃণালের মনটা ছিল আলোকিত।

বড় বউয়ের কুরূপা, অসহায়, পিতৃমাতৃহীন ছোটবোন বিন্দু যখন ভাগ্যের ফেরে সে বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নিলো তখন তার স্থান হলো বাড়ির এককোণে দাসীর মতোই। সেই মেয়েটিকে বুকে টেনে নিয়েছিল মৃণাল। কিন্তু দূর্ভাগ্য নিয়েই যার জন্ম তার জীবনকে ভাগ্যের করাল গ্রাস থেকে বাঁচাতে পারে নি মৃণাল শত চেষ্টা করেও। মৃণালের স্বামীর চরিত্র দোষ না থাকুক, বিন্দুর সাথে ঘটে যাওয়া অন্যায়ের জন্য সে তার শ্বশুরবাড়ির অন্যদের সাথে সাথে নিজের স্বামীকেও ক্ষমা করতে পারে নি। তবে মৃণাল পালায় নি, নিজের নতুন পথ খুঁজে নেবার চেষ্টা করেছে। অভিমানে নয় বরং প্রতিবাদেই সে পুরীতে চলে গিয়েছিল সুযোগ পেয়ে। তারপর তার জীবনে কি হলো তা পাঠকের জানার সুযোগ নেই। ছোটগল্পের বৈশিষ্ট্যই‌ তো হলো শেষ হয়েও হলো না শেষ। তবু গল্পের বা চিঠির শেষে মীরাবাঈয়ের উল্লেখ হয়তো মৃণালের সন্ন্যাসীনি হবার সম্ভাবনাই পাঠকের মনে জাগিয়ে তোলে, কিম্বা কে জানে? আশাপূর্ণা দেবীর বিখ্যাত ট্রিলজির প্রথম প্রতিশ্রুতি বা সূবর্ণলতা যারা পড়েছেন তারা সত্যবতী বা সূবর্ণলতা দুজনের সাথেই হয়তো মৃণালের চরিত্রের মিল খুঁজে পাবেন। সেই উপন্যাসগুলির ও বহু আগে যে কালের কথা সেই সময়ে বসেই সেসময়ের নারীদের মনের কথা, প্রতিবাদের কথা রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর লিখে গিয়েছিলেন এই ছোট গল্পে ভাবতেও অবাক লাগে। নিজে নারী না হয়েও নারীদের মনের গোপন দুঃখবোধ আর প্রতিবাদের কথা এতো সাবলীলভাবে লেখা- এ শুধু তাঁর পক্ষেই বোধহয় সম্ভব ছিল। স্ত্রীর পত্র বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম নারীবাদী গল্প কিনা জানিনা, বোদ্ধা পাঠকের বলতে পারবেন। তবে এটি শুধু তাঁর লেখা অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ গল্পই শুধু না বাংলা ছোটগল্পের শ্রেষ্ঠ গল্পের একটি বললে বোধহয় বাড়িয়ে বলা হবে না।

Deliciously rebellious.
You feel both mortified by the way that womwn were treated,
& get a kick what Tagore would have felt publishing this in 1899...
& yes. Mrinal was def privileged, the amount that it is possible for a woman in 1899 India to be.
& please! What's with the silly illustrations on the covers? Mrinal was the ripe old age of 27 when she narrates this.

It is also fascinating to see the female bonding, & I am assuming that the original readership would have been unaware of even the concept of homosexuality (but I may be wrong) ... but the bond that Tagore describes might be filial, sisterly or romantic or friendly... but it's quite beautiful.
My book club friend drew our attention to the fact that this is how "sannyaasi"s - ascetics of Hindu sects - start : by performing the last rights for their own previous selves, & also that Puri is the place where the final "pinD daan" takes place, & that threw new light on Tagore's intended metaphor.

আমি ছোটবেলা থেকেই চিঠি পছন্দ করি।
বাবাই মাকে যে চিঠি গুলা লিখেছেন সেইগুলা এখনও যত্ন করে রাখা আছে। আরেকটা মজার ঘটনা হচ্ছে , আমার ভাইয়ের স্কুল লাইফের গফ ওকে যে চিঠি গুলা লিখতো আমি তা লুকিয়ে লুকিয়ে পড়তাম। এইভাবেই চিঠির প্রতি ভালোলাগা শুরু। আমার ভালোলাগার সবাইকে চিঠি লিখেছি আর এখনও লিখছি। সব চিঠি হয়তো দেওয়া হয়নি , কিন্তু লিখেছি ঠিকই।
চিঠি ভালো লাগার জন্য দিদিমা ভাবতে পারেন। এদিক দিয়ে আমি মডার্ন বডিতে আবদ্ধ একজন দিদিমা। হাহা!!!

এবার রবি ঠাকুরের লেখা চিঠিতে আসা যাক।
মৃণাল!
হাজার শব্দের এই চিঠি পড়ে মৃণালকে অন্ধকার অন্তরমহলের আবদ্ধ বউয়ের মতো মনে হবে না।সে রূপবতী, বুদ্ধিমতী এবং অন্যায়ের প্রতিবাদী। শেষের দিকে সে তার স্বামীকে বলে সে মরার জন্য চলে আসেনি। সে বলে,
"মীরাবাঈ তার গানে বলেছিল, ‘ছাড়ুক বাপ, ছাড়ুক মা, ছাড়ুক যে যেখানে আছে, মীরা কিন্তু লেগেই রইল, প্রভু— তাতে তার যা হবার তা হোক।’

এই লেগে থাকাই তো বেঁচে থাকা।

আমিও বাঁচব। আমি বাঁচলুম।"

Story of Rabindranath Tagore's wife, how the women were crushed under the so called customs to let the girl in them die and how she freed herself. Nice one time read. Noone discovered the poet in her since 15 years of marriage and how she had a beautiful relationship with Bindu...who was Bindu...read to know the story. Stay curious.

এক ঘন্টা ধরে Audiobook শুনে নিজেকে নিবৃত করতে পারলাম, এর পর Stories by Rabindranath নামক TV series এ একটি একটি করে ঘেটে এ পর্বটিও দেখে ফেললাম, তবু রেশ কাটছে না। রবী বাবুর লেখায় এত আবেগ ছুয়ে যাবার ক্ষমতা আছে, আগে অত জানতাম না। This one of the best, if not the best, short story by Tagore.

রবীন্দ্রনাথ যখন পড়ি এই নাদান পাঠকের কাছে প্রত্যেকটা লাইন 'প্রবাদ' এর মত ঠেকে! উপরের ঐ একটা লাইনই এই গল্পটার সারাংশ বলা যায়, এও বলা যায় এ বাংলার প্রত্যেক গৃহিণীর জীবনের সারাংশ।
