No matter how strong the relationship, or powerful the attraction at some time we all must say goodbye.
In 1964 the winds of change blows across the Atlantic from England to America and sparks a cultural and social revolution. Traditional values of the past are replaced with more modern attitudes caused by the hottest tunes and the latest dance craze.
Vivacious Hollywood starlet Frankie Robinson has no romantic expectations when she meets the dark and introspective Alex Rowley, guitarist for one of the hottest British bands—The Dark Knights. During their first dance, they step into each other's rhythm, as though partners in another life.
For an eager young couple, neither Frankie nor Alex anticipates the scandal their public relationship will cause—reputations must be protected and images need to be maintained. As Frankie and Alex dream of a life together, agents and managers worry of the monies lost and the dangers to their perspective clients. Frankie and Alex are to be kept apart no matter what tragic cost.
Behind the closed curtains of celebrity life, Frank and Alex find a way to keep their private love alive despite all obstacles.
Have you ever wondered whether famous people can have normal lives - like honest relationships, family and true happiness? This book looks at that question with the backdrop of the turbulent 1960's when the world's beliefs, institutions and morality were being over-turned. One of the biggest stars of the British rock revolution meets an American dancer/singer/actress who is the dream of every red-blooded American boy. Just what everyone dreams of, right? Throw in the sexual revolution, the Vietnam war, the peace movement, the drug culture and growing up under the threat of Hollywood blacklisting from the McCarthy House Un-American Activities Committee. What could possibly go wrong? This is an engrossing story of a young couple striving to have a normal life in an abnormal world. Irresistible.
I received this book, for free, in a Goodread's First Read Giveaway! Thank You! This is an extremely well written story about a rock star and an aspiring young actress who are denied their chance for happiness because they represent huge amounts of money for their parents, agents and investors. Alex and Frankie's happiness is not important as the money to be made for the people that are suppose to care about them. Will Alex and Frankie value their love enough to walk away from the fame and fortune?
Saying Goodbye is the story of Frankie Robinson, the privileged child of celebrity parents who has her own break into show business. On a trip to Europe with her chaperone and a few other friends, America’s sweetheart met the band members of Dark Knights, a 1960s boy band reminiscent of the Beatles. Alex Rowley, the band’s guitarist, is taken with her immediately. What transpires is a scenario akin to love at first site. But this young couple is unlucky in love as class issues, business dealings, family interference and societal pressures come to tear them apart. True love finds a way to live despite obstacles like time and space differences. Alex and Frankie face insurmountable odds and fight to maintain what they have waited their whole lives to find – to give and receive love unconditionally and with complete acceptance.
Mahima Martel has taken a topic dear to the hearts of many in exploring the story of a celebrity couple. In this well-written novel, the novelist takes readers behind the scenes into the lives we are rarely exposed to for those with celebrity status. Shedding light on such issues as blacklisting, media sensationalism, and classism, she delicately reminds us that those we see in the public spotlight are often so much more than what we are ever allowed to see. Their hurts, pains, and struggles are real. Despite their fame, money, prestige and privilege it all boils down to them being as human as the rest of us.
This story tugs on the emotions of its readers, drawing them deeper. I was left always wanting to know what was coming next. The author receives 5 very well-earned stars. I look forward to reading the sequel.
The story brings back a lot of memories of the musical and social changes that were going on in the 1960's. The main theme of the book is how the two main characters, Frankie and Alex were controlled by other people and were not able to let their relationship develop naturally. Frankie was controlled by her parents and Alex by the managers of his musical group. The story stirred a lot of emotions and I became teary-eyed when Alex and Frankie met in Jamaica and resolved some critical issues between them. As Shakespeare said, "parting is such sweet sorrow", but will this be the end of their relationship? I believe they will continue to meet up from time to time.
