Born at Khandarpara, in Faridpur District (now in Bangladesh) on 4 December 1888, to Haladhar Majumdar and Bidhumukhi, Majumdar passed his childhood in poverty. In 1905, he passed his Entrance Examination from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack. In 1907, he passed F.A. with first class scholarship from Ripon College (now Surendranath College) and joined Presidency College, Calcutta. Graduating in B.A.(Honours) in 1909 and MA from Calcutta University in 1911, he won the Premchand Roychand scholarship from the University of Calcutta for his research work in 1913.
Majumdar started his teaching career as a lecturer at Dacca Government Training College. Since 1914, he spent seven years as a professor of history at the University of Calcutta. He got his doctorate for his thesis "Corporate Life in Ancient India".[3] In 1921 he joined the newly established University of Dacca as a professor of history. He also served, until he became its vice chancellor, as the head of the Department of History as well as the dean of the Faculty of Arts. Between 1924 and 1936 he was Provost of Jagannath Hall. Then he became the vice chancellor of that University, for five years from 1937 to 1942. From 1950, he was Principal of the College of Indology, Benares Hindu University. He was elected the general president of the Indian History Congress and also became the vice president of the International Commission set up by the UNESCO for the history of mankind.
Majumdar started his research on ancient India. After extensive travels to Southeast Asia and research, he wrote detailed histories of Champa (1927), Suvarnadvipa (1929) and Kambuja Desa. On the initiative of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, he took up the mantle of editing a multi-volume tome on Indian history. Starting in 1951, he toiled for twenty six long years to describe the history of the Indian people from the Vedic Period to the present day in eleven volumes. In 1955, Majumdar became the founder-principal of the College of Indology of Nagpur University. In 1958-59, he taught Indian history in the University of Chicago and University of Pennsylvania. He was also the president of the Asiatic Society (1966–68) and the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad (1968–69). For some time he was also the Sheriff of Calcutta (1967–68).
When the final volume of "The History and Culture of the Indian People" was published in 1977, he had turned eighty-eight. He also edited the three-volume history of Bengal published by Dacca University. His last book was "Jivaner Smritidvipe".
When the Government of India set up an editorial Committee to author a history of the freedom struggle of India, he was its principal member. But, following a conflict with the then Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on the Sepoy Mutiny, he left the government job and published his own book. The Sepoy Mutiny & Revolt of 1857. According to him the origins of India's freedom struggle lie in the English-educated Indian middle-class and the freedom struggle started with the Banga Bhanga movement in 1905. His views on the freedom struggle are found in his book History of the Freedom Movement in India. He was an admirer of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

ইতিহাসের বইয়ের রিভিউ দেয়া কঠিন। তারপর সেটা যদি নিজের দেশের ইতিহাস হয়। নিজের উপর ধিক্কার জন্মায় এইজন্য যে, নিজের দেশের ইতিহাস খুব বিস্তারিত কিছুই জানি না, পাঠ্যপুস্তকে যতটুকু পড়েছি ততটুকুই।
(ওরে নরাধম, নিজের বাপের সন্ধান না করিয়া, অপরের বাপের খবরে তোর কাজ কি!)
বাংলাদেশের ইসলাম-পূর্ব যুগের ইতিহাস আলোচনায় আজকাল কাউকে আগ্রহী দেখা যায় না। তাদের কাছে বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাস বখতিয়ার খীলজী থেকে শুরু। প্রাক-মুসলিম বাংলার ইতিহাস জানতে এই বইটা পড়া আবশ্যকই শুধু নয়, অনেকক্ষেত্রে একমাত্র একটা রিডেবল ইতিহাস।
আমি ইতিহাস বিলাসী। আমার মত যারা ইতিহাসকে চলতে ফিরতে দেখতে পান, হাজার দুহাজার বছর আগের সময়কে দেখতে পান, তারা এই বই পড়ে আবেগী হতে বাধ্য। সাধুভাষায় লেখা বইটা ২০২৩ অনুপাতে একদম সহজবোধ্য না হলেও, অন্যান্য বইয়ের তুলনায় সহজবোধ্য ও সহজপাচ্য।
বইটা ৪ খন্ড বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসের প্রথম খন্ড।
রমেশচন্দ্র এই বইটায় একদম পুরো একাডেমিক ইতিহাস ও আর্কিওলজি ফলো করেছেন। কোন শোনা কথা, অলৌকিক বিবরণকে পুরো সত্যি ধরে নেননি। এটা অনেক বড় দৃঢ়তা এই অর্থে যে, যেকোন জাতিই তার জন্মকালের ধূসর সময়কে একটা মিথিক্যাল রূপ দেবার চেষ্টা করে। গুপ্তযুগ পূর্ববর্তী বাঙালীদের ইতিহাসও নানা গল্পকথায় মোড়ানো। রমেশচন্দ্র সেসব উল্লেখ করলেও তাকে ঐতিহাসিক সত্য ধরে নেন নাই।মোটামুটি বঙ্গের উদ্ভব থেকে সেন-রাজগণ পর্যন্ত বাংলার রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাসের একটা ভীষণ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং ডিটেলড ভিউ এখানে পাঠক পাবেন।
হিন্দুধর্মের জাতপাত নিয়ে কথা আছে বিস্তর৷ এক্ষেত্রে রমেশচন্দ্রের নিরপেক্ষতা অবাক করার মত। অন্য যে কেউ এইসব ইতিহাসকে নিজের মত চালাতে পারত, কিন্তু স্যার তা করেননি। এমনকি ইতিহাসে যেমন বঙ্গবাসীকে অসভ্য কিন্তু বীররূপে দেখানো হয়েছে, তার উল্লেখও আছে।বাংলাদেশের সংস্কৃতির উদ্ভব নিয়েও কথা আছে।
ভাষা, আচার আচরণ, পোশাক আশাকের উৎপত্তি নিয়েও কিছু সংক্ষিপ্ত বিবরণ আছে, যা পর্যাপ্ত না হলেও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। প্রচুর রেফারেন্স গ্রন্থ, পুঁথির উল্লেখ আছে, তবে অধিক জানতে গেলে ওসব ধরলে যে সাগরে পড়তে হবে তা বলাই বাহুল্য। কোন পুঁথির কতটা সত্য, কতটা কল্পনা, সেটা নিয়েও বিস্তর মন্তব্য আছে৷ এমনকি পূর্ববর্তী ঐতিহাসিক লেখকগণের আলোচনা সহ।বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের কোথায় কোথায় কত ঐতিহাসিক নিদর্শন, শিলালিপি, সীলমোহর আছে, তাদের লেখনীর কতটা বিশ্বাসযোগ্য এসব নিয়েও স্যার যুক্তিগ্রাহ্য মতামত দিয়েছেন।(যেগুলি বাংলার ইতিহাসের সাথে সঙ্গত)
২০২৩ এ এসে উপলব্ধি করতে পারি, ইতিহাস একটা মারাত্মক অস্ত্র। এটা আপনার যুক্তি-বুদ্ধি ও ভাবনার প্যাটার্ন ফর্মেশনে বিরাট ভূমিকা রাখে। তাই ইতিহাসকে বহুকাল আগে থেকেই প্রোপাগাণ্ডার হাতিয়ার হিসাবে ধরা হয়৷ এবং সত্যিকার নিরপেক্ষ ইতিহাসের চেয়ে দুর্লভ জিনিস কমই আছে।নিরপেক্ষ ইতিহাস যতই ড্রাই হোক, আর যতই আপনার ফিলিংসকে হার্ট করুক, তার মূল্য অপরিসীম। এই অসাধারণ কাজটি রমেশচন্দ্র এই বইতে করে দেখিয়েছেন। যারা নিজেদের ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে জানতে চান সংস্কারমুক্ত মনে, অবশ্যই বইটা পড়ুন।
বইটাকে চারতারা দেবার কারণ এর আপাত নীরসতা, তবে সেটা আমার বয়সের দোষ, বইটির দুর্বলতা নয়৷ এই বই আমার মত অপগণ্ডের জন্য লেখা নয়, যারা লেখনীর সরসতা অপেক্ষা লেখনীর গুরুত্বকে বেশি মর্যাদা দেন, তাদের জন্য।

Emergence of Marxist and pseudo-secular historiography in independent India had done incalculable damage to the study of Indian history, esp. the history of ancient India. The study of history of Bengal was one of the biggest casualties because every so-called radical historian had unleashed their knives & pipes to discredit the school of nationalist historiography that had been pioneered by stalwarts like Sir Jadunath Sircar and Dr. R.C Mazumdar. This forgotten book is the first of four volumes of history of Bengal that had been penned by Dr. Mazumdar, to make Bengali history more easily accessible to the people of Bengal, rather than confining it to the domain of intellectuals. It is not only a study in painstaking research and knowledge, but also of lucid narrative style. Highly Recommended.

যদিও এটা ঘুরে ফিরে রাজা-রাজড়ার ইতিহাস তবুও অনেক তথ্যবহুল একটা বই।প্রাচীন বাংলার ইতিহাস (মুসলমান আসার আগে) নিয়ে আলোচিত হয়েছে এই লেখায়।তখনকার পলিটিকাল ব্যাখ্যা ভালভাবে না দিলেও সাহিত্য, শিল্প,বাণিজ্য, জাতপ্রথা নিয়ে বিস্তর আলাপ হয়েছে।বাংলার নিজস্ব কতৃর্ত্ব শুধুমাত্র পাল,শশাঙ্ক এর সময়েই ছিল আর্য আসার পর।বাকি সময় বিজাতীয়দের দ্বারা শাসিত।এই বই পড়ে জানলাম ব্রাহ্মণ-শুদ্র ছাড়া বাংলায় জাতিভেদ নাই।ক্ষত্রিয় -বৈশ্য খুব কম।

Why R.C Majumdar is pioneer as a historian because unlike other academic he completely relies on archaeological & historical Inscription rather than oral or folkore on describe history. he's very neutral in that sense History is by far seeking truth by depending or by delving the truth. no Bengali historian as much impressed me like him, he's no pseudo historian who self aggrandizes himself as a historian. he simply explains facts. one thing i just want to describe to show his reflex on history telling method how he described our linguistic past by just 3 or 5 lines. it's amazing!

ইতিহাস পড়লে স্কলারদের ইতিহাসই পড়া উচিত। অবশ্যই নিজের চোখ,কান, মগজ খোলা রেখে৷

ইতিহাস পড়তে গিয়ে অনেক সময় মনে হয় আমরা শুধু অতীতের ঘটনাগুলো গুনছি—রাজা-বাদশার নাম, যুদ্ধের সাল-তারিখ, সাম্রাজ্যের উত্থান-পতনের তালিকা। কিন্তু যখন হাতে আসে রোমেশচন্দ্র মজুমদারের “বাংলা দেশের ইতিহাস: প্রথম খণ্ড”, তখন বোঝা যায় ইতিহাস আসলে কীভাবে বাঁচতে শেখায়, কেমন করে অতীতের ধুলো মুছে আমাদের সামনে বর্তমানের আয়না ধরে।
এই বই কেবল বাংলার ইতিহাসের দলিল নয়, বরং পুরো একটি সভ্যতার নকশা। লেখক শুরু করেছেন প্রাগৈতিহাসিক যুগ থেকে—যেখানে নদীমাতৃক ভূপ্রকৃতি, উর্বর কৃষিজমি ও প্রাকৃতিক বৈশিষ্ট্য কেমন করে সমাজের চরিত্র গড়ে দিয়েছে, তার ব্যাখ্যা দিয়েছেন। পড়তে পড়তে মনে হয়, পদ্মা-গঙ্গা-যমুনার স্রোতধারা কেবল নদী নয়, বরং সমাজের প্রাণশক্তি।
মৌর্য, গুপ্ত, পাল ও সেন যুগের রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাস যেমন এখানে বিস্তারিত আছে, তেমনি ধর্ম ও সংস্কৃতির পালাবদলও সুচারুভাবে তুলে ধরা হয়েছে। পাল যুগে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের প্রসার, গুপ্ত যুগে হিন্দু সংস্কৃতির বিকাশ, সেন যুগে সামাজিক বিভাজন—সব মিলিয়ে পাঠক যেন একটি পরিবর্তনশীল বাংলার ভেতর দিয়ে হেঁটে যায়। বিশেষ করে পাল যুগের সাংস্কৃতিক জাগরণ এবং নালন্দা-বিদ্যালয়ের প্রভাব পড়ে বোঝা যায়, বাংলার ঐতিহ্য আসলে কত প্রাচীন ও গৌরবময়।
এই বইয়ের সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি হলো—তথ্যপ্রমাণের নির্ভুল ব্যবহার। শিলালিপি, তাম্রলিপি, প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন, বিদেশি ভ্রমণকারীর বিবরণ—সবকিছু মিলিয়ে লেখক ইতিহাসকে শক্ত ভিত দিয়েছেন। এতে বোঝা যায় তিনি শুধু ইতিহাস লেখেননি, বরং ইতিহাসকে বাঁচিয়েছেন।
তবে একথা অস্বীকার করা যাবে না, বইয়ের ভাষা ভারী, বাক্য জটিল এবং তথ্যের আধিক্যে মাঝে মাঝে পাঠককে হাঁপিয়ে তোলে। সাধারণ পাঠকের জন্য বইটি সহজপাঠ্য নয়; বরং যারা ইতিহাস গবেষণায় অভ্যস্ত, তাদের জন্য এটি এক অপরিহার্য সম্পদ।
তবু ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতা বলছে—যতই ভাষা কঠিন হোক, বইয়ের প্রতিটি অধ্যায় পড়তে গিয়ে মনে হয়েছে আমি যেন বাংলার প্রাচীন সমাজের ভেতরে দাঁড়িয়ে আছি। কৃষকের হালচাষ, ভিক্ষুদের মঠজীবন, রাজসভায় রাজনীতির কূটকচালি—সব যেন চোখের সামনে জীবন্ত হয়ে উঠেছে।

এই বইয়ের সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি হলো—তথ্যপ্রমাণের নির্ভুল ব্যবহার। শিলালিপি, তাম্রলিপি, প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন, বিদেশি ভ্রমণকারীর বিবরণ—সবকিছু মিলিয়ে লেখক ইতিহাসকে শক্ত ভিত দিয়েছেন। এতে বোঝা যায় তিনি শুধু ইতিহাস লেখেননি, বরং ইতিহাসকে বাঁচিয়েছেন।
তবে একথা অস্বীকার করা যাবে না, বইয়ের ভাষা ভারী, বাক্য জটিল এবং তথ্যের আধিক্যে মাঝে মাঝে পাঠককে হাঁপিয়ে তোলে। সাধারণ পাঠকের জন্য বইটি সহজপাঠ্য নয়; বরং যারা ইতিহাস গবেষণায় অভ্যস্ত, তাদের জন্য এটি এক অপরিহার্য সম্পদ।
তবু ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতা বলছে—যতই ভাষা কঠিন হোক, বইয়ের প্রতিটি অধ্যায় পড়তে গিয়ে মনে হয়েছে আমি যেন বাংলার প্রাচীন সমাজের ভেতরে দাঁড়িয়ে আছি। কৃষকের হালচাষ, ভিক্ষুদের মঠজীবন, রাজসভায় রাজনীতির কূটকচালি—সব যেন চোখের সামনে জীবন্ত হয়ে উঠেছে।

ঐতিহাসিক উপকরণের অপ্রতুলতা সত্ত্বেও সংক্ষেপে বাঙালী জাতির উৎপত্তি, ভুখন্ড, রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাস, সমাজ, ধর্ম, সংস্কৃতি, শিল্পকলার তথ্যবহুল আলোচনা হয়েছে। তবে গুপ্তোত্তর রাজবংশগুলোর বর্ণনা আরেকটু ক্রমানুযায়ী হলে পাঠকের বুঝতে আরো সুবিধা হত।
