Without Me is a light-hearted story about a runaway child, who wants to leave home, but before he can, he worries about those he will leave behind. As he reflects on the impact of his departure he realises ultimately where he belongs.
(1) In this charming, enjoyable and amusing book Kayleen West has combined agreeable reading with subtle teaching for pre-schoolers. It is the story of a little boy who decides to run away from home – but he can’t unless he takes his puppy. Then he resolves that he must also take his kitten – and his baby sister and eventually his brother and his mum and dad. Ultimately he decides that his family cannot live without him and he cannot do without them.
This is a really delightful story and a great educational tool for training little ones to appreciate their family and teaches him how much he is needed and loved. DS

(3) This little person is fed up, feels unloved and unwanted; decides to run away but remembers the puppy, then the cat, and the baby sister. Are you beginning to get the idea? The whole family is eventually collected. And then second thoughts occur. If the whole family and all the paraphernalia come might not it be better to stay? Everybody in a family is loved and needs each other to make the family work. Kayleen’s illustrations and quite delightful. LS
A caring, sensitive boy wants to run away from home - but he's troubled about what he should leave behind. The cat? The dog? His baby sister? How will they manage without him? What about mum? Dad?
A young child is struggling with feeling unwanted and unloved and decides to runaway. But in trying to leave realises all the things the family will miss out on. I really enjoyed this book and so did my four year old. The realisations that the child in the story comes to about what the family will miss out on if their not there is so simple and well placed. It's great to have a book which reinforces a childs understanding of their importance and place within their family.
A little boy decides to run away from home because no-one loves him. But if he goes, who will feed the dog and stroke the kitten and play with his little sister and do all of those other things only he can do?
I liked the way the little boy thinks about his actions before he carries them out. Kayleen West's illustrations are really good and there are lots of little details to enjoy. I felt the ending was spelled out a bit too much, but it's a good book overall with a positive message about belonging.
This is a delightful picture book for children about a child who is upset and wants to run away from home. As he attempts to leave, he begins to notice the things he would miss. As we count them, he decides to take them with him. Soon he's taking more than he's leaving behind.
This book touches on lots of topics that are important for little ones: family love, anger management, caring for pets and more, all the while entertaining them AND helping them count to ten. The illustrations are wonderful—bright and colorful. The character's facial expressions are laugh-out-loud grand—even the cat and dog. The pages are glossy and each one is a treat. I highly recommend this book.
