After barely escaping the sinking cruise ship they’d found adrift in the gulf of Mexico, Steve Wendell and the remains of his group enter Galveston and Texas City to find them burned and abandoned by the living, but not by the dead. The shores are swarming with them. When their boat is holed by debris, they search for another and come across a group of survivors who’ve taken refuge on a deactivated battleship. Agreeing to help these people get to safety in exchange for use of their boats, they soon find that except for one of this new group, they are an albatross around their neck. As they make their way through a landscape full of the dead who want to kill and eat them, and the living who want to kill and rob them, they find it’s a continual battle of survival. When they discover their way is blocked by a huge mob of the dead, they take refuge in the last place they could have ever imagined.

Great characters, interesting story, weird editing issues
I continue to read this series because I love the characters and the story is so good BUT despite an ever-increasingly horrible editing job that actually became bizarre with this book - with notes to “Jon” (I’m presuming from an editor/proofer) appearing in random places. This series has been out a long time and there’s no excuse for a mistake like that to stand; while it’s encouraging someone did apparently proof this the fact there remains a huge number of grammatical and spelling errors (most notable the lack of apostrophes/misuse of basics like there-they’re-their, etc. throughout) isn’t a great reference. Being a writer/editor myself I’ve tried not to be too judgmental about this, but it’s incredibly distracting and disappointing - and takes a five-star book to a three, which is a shame.
I'm really enjoying this series, can't wait for the final instalment, I have a suspicion that all bets will be off for all the characters. Please Mr Schafer don't kill Grimm or to use her full, glorious title, Delightfully Grimm - what a fantastic character. Hopefully we will see more of her and Igor in the finale.
