The As You Were series features contributions from comic book and web-comic artists active in punk rock communities from around the world.
Curated by Mitch Clem (Nothing Nice To Say / My Stupid Life), the second issue's theme is "The Pit" with 80 pages of brand new content from 25 artists:
Adrian Chi, Andra Passen, Andy Warner, Ben Snakepit, Brad Dwyer, Brian Connolly, Corey Parkhill, Jim Kettner, Jed Collins, Jason Oberbichler, Liz Prince, Marcos Siref, Meg, Mel, Mike Funk, Mitch Clem & Nation Of Amanda, Rachel Duke, Ramsey “Everydaypants” Beyer, Rick V, Rob Cureton, Sarah Graley, Steve Larder, Will Laren and Ben Sears.
Mitch Clem first gained recognition for his comic series Nothing Nice to Say, a satire of punk music and culture, before moving on to the autobiographical comics San Antonio Rock City and My Stupid Life. He also created and curated the punk rock comic zine As You Were, and has drawn album art, merch, and flyers for hundreds of bands. He lives in San Antonio, TX with his wife (fellow cartoonist Amanda Kirk) and their daughter.
Now this is how personal comics should be done. No boring renderings of what are essentially social media updates and no inexplicable weirdness for weirdness' sake. Just personal takes on a common theme.
There are plenty of styles to like or dislike and the depth of the stories descend from the shallows to the deeps. Take a dive into this and see why punk helps some of us keep our heads above water.
My favourite zine series. Never boring, the blend of nostalgia, opinions, poignant experience, and honest portrayals of life without ever "trying" to be like something else makes this for me.
