Love Has No Boundaries Anthology: Volume 4

Rate this book
The stories you are about to read celebrate love, sex and romance between men. They are a product of the Love Has No Boundaries promotion sponsored by the Goodreads M/M Romance Group, and each anthology is published as a gift to you.

What Is Love Has No Boundaries?

The Goodreads M/M Romance Group invited members to choose a photo and pen a letter asking for a short M/M romance story inspired by the image; authors from the group were then encouraged to select a letter and write an original tale. The result was an outpouring of creativity that shone a spotlight on the special bond between M/M romance writers and the people who love what they produce.

Nearly 190 stories were submitted and have now been published as a twelve volume set with two additional bonus volumes, titled Love Has No Boundaries. This edition is Volume 4.

Words of Caution

The stories in this collection may contain sexually explicit content and are intended for adult readers. They may also contain content that is disagreeable or distressing to some readers. The M/M Romance Group strongly recommends that the reader review the General Information section before each story for story tags as well as for content warnings.

Jessica Freely can't resist a wounded hero. As a reader and a writer, her favorite stories are of soul mates finding redemption in each other's arms. Married to the love of her life in a beautiful relationship based on mutual goofiness, Jessica also warps minds as an instructor in Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction MFA program. Her dog, Ruthie, doesn't seem to care that Jessica's an award-winning and best-selling author in multiple genres. She just wants to play tug of war with Jessica's pages.

The Lion and the Crow by Eli Easton was a pleasant surprise for me. 5 stars!
My review.

Smoky Glimpses by Nicole Forcine – 3 stars
My review.

Making It Happen and The Long Return are both lost love / second chance / reunited lovers stories. I’m glad I ran into two stories with the same theme straight off the reel, because it became clear for me that not the theme was my main problem but the execution of it.

Making It Happen by S.J. Eller – 1 star

The Long Return by Jessica Freely – 3.5 stars

The Tail of a Dog by Summer Devon 3 stars - (contemporary, dogs POV) Cute picture, cute title, cute story. It gives it a very different feel to have it be from the dog's POV! less romantic obviously, but funny and sad and very sweet.

Back From the Past by Mia Downing 3 stars - (contemporary, friends-to-lovers) They nailed every detail of this picture in the story, which I always appreciate. A good short about reuniting after a long-ago hurt. Jace's vague "I can't say what happened" got a little annoying and all the build up made the reveal not all that dramatic. But it was a sweet story. The ending felt a little abrupt, and although I'm usually ok with HFN, this was a little too now.

The Lodestar of Ys by Amy Rae Durreson 4.5 stars - (fantasy, enemies-to-lovers) It's pretty freaken amazing what some people can do in so few pages. The fantasy and war aspects of this actually reminded me of Raymond Feist's Magician series, which if you don't know it is a fantastic epic of, well... epic proportion. The characters here were complex, the world-building was fantabulous, and the ending was hopeful and happy without being unrealistic . Would love a follow up short about Sjurd coming home to Celyn on Gwydr after a minor skirmish, and/or an unexpected run in/reunion with Ivarr and Hrolf. Pleeeeease?!?

The Lion and the Crow by Eli Easton - (historical)

Seeing Lagos by Alessandra Ebulu - (contemporary, sweet/no sex) Not great reviews, I'll skip this one.

Making It Happen by S.J. Eller - (contemporary, established couple)

Treasure by Kim Fielding 4 stars - (fantasy, hurt/comfort) Very nice, very nice indeed! This was just adorable and surprisingly funny. Kit and Julian were far too sweet. I'm usually not one for flowery prose, but Kit's romantic rants were just over the top enough for him to be poking a little fun at himself, and given the time period it feels more natural. "It's as if I'm a ship and you're my home port. I'm a snail and you're my shell. I'm an imp -- Well, you get the idea."

"Romance, adventure, excitement, and enough gossip to last them for years." What more could the sleepy fishing village of Urchin Cove (or me, for that matter) ask for?!

Cherry Blossoms and Titanium by Tia Fielding - (contemporary, BDSM)

Smoky Glimpses by Nicole Forcine 4 stars - (contemporary, firemen) A short, sweet, and fun little story with a nice supernatural twist. A small moment of suspense in the middle to ratchet up the tension a bit. Then a sweet HFN with a great teaser Glimpse.

Pride of the Veld by LE Franks - (contemporary, menage)

The Long Return by Jessica Freely 3.5 stars - (contemporary) This was a sweet little story. I thought Trev's reactions were authentic and he went through all the emotions that you would in this circumstance. The big reveal was a good one, it was hard to figure out what the F would make him disappear for 15 years, but they did a pretty good job with the explanation.

Just a side note of something that stood out to me... It seemed like a really bad stereotype to have the young black man drinking a 40. I mean I know he doesn't make a lot of money but, c'mon. We drank Olde English in college cuz you'd get 40 ounces for $2.50 and could play "Edward 40 Hands" and duct tape one to each hand and you couldn't get them off until you drank them both... but really? So that jolted me out of the story a bit because it seemed like an odd place for the black-people-like-malt-liquor stereotype.

It took me a while to finish this volume. I liked nearly all of the stories, but no one swept me really off my feet. It was good, but not more.

This volume was especially good. There wasn't a bad story in the bunch, and there were some unique cultures and settings in this anthology. Just out of personal preference, the stories that really stood out as favorites for me were

1. "The Lodestar of Ys" by Amy Rae Durreson -- This is a great one for fantasy fans, and it has a whisper of the same feel (though m/m and a very different plot) as Bujold's Sharing Knife.

2. "The Lion and the Crow" by Eli Easton -- A suspenseful historical with sexy knights.

3. "Treasure" by Kim Fielding -- This story had pirates, adventure, and an unlikely hero.

4."Smoky Glimpses" by Nicole Forcine -- Paranormal and a firemen calendar. Enough said.

These four stuck out for me, but I enjoyed all the stories. This was an especially strong anthology.
