Blue Light #2

Soul Thief

Rate this book
The Brotherhood of the Order is one of the oldest and most mysterious organizations on earth. Its primary mission is to protect one of the most carefully guarded secrets in human history, an object so enigmatic and powerful that in the wrong hands it could wreak havoc upon the earth. In the right hands it just might have the power to save humanity from its own destructive impulses.

Doug McArthur, hit in the face by a young friend at the age of seven, is suddenly able to see a supernatural creature who calls itself Collector. Doug’s life is turned upside down when he realizes that it’s not just the creature he sees, but the atrocities it commits.

Since marrying Annie his visions have been quiet and Doug is grateful. Now Annie is pregnant with their first child—a child that promises to be special—and their world is in the process of coming apart, beginning with the destruction of their home and forcing them to run for their lives, back into the world of Annie’s childhood, the De Roché dynasty, to a murdered mother and a cruel and enigmatic father.

Doug, whose love for Annie borders on the obsessive, has a deep and abiding hate for her father. He is nearly insane with grief over their plight, but soon finds that De Roché is the least of his worries when he begins to hear the pleading voice of a lost child that he cannot possibly save.

And then, in the midst of Annie’s mother’s funeral, Doug is given a strange artifact, along with a dire warning by a dying priest. He must leave Annie and his unborn child and begin a sojourn into the darkest regions of the human heart.

In his attempt to save his wife and unborn child, Doug finds that there is much more at stake than the lives of two people, perhaps the very salvation of the human soul.

Soul Thief is the second novel in the Blue Light Series, a supernatural thriller that will keep you guessing until the stunning conclusion.

Can't put the book down

I love this book. It has so much action that it is very hard to put down. This one is about Doug and Annie. There is a lot of paranormal with the collector, the blue light, Annie's father being immortal and more. You don't have to read the first one to read this one but a couple people from the first book is in this book. Mr. Hall is my newest favorite author!

Chasing and identifying

I enjoyed this story line. A husband and wife team whom were "chosen" long ago to have a child who would be "the chosen one" fight evil from all around them, including the woman's own father, their deadliest threat. Paranormal issues.

“Lost, Forsaken, Forgotten.”
Doug and Annie McArthur are awakened by their ringing phone. Doug answers and recognized the voice on the other end. With a groan of dread, Doug listened to what his father-in-law, Edouard De Roche. “Get out of the house immediately and take Annie with you. Your lives are in eminent danger so take nothing and leave NOW!” Doug didn’t like his father-in-law but he had no doubt that this was a hoax or understated. When the phone goes dead, his legs spring into action, and wake his wife, getting her to dress and ready to follow him out of their home. As they approach the front door, quiet voices could be heard on the other side. He immediately makes a detour to a window. Right before Doug opens the window, they both smell gas. They scamper out of the window and begin to run. The explosion behind them threw them both to the ground. Their home is completely destroyed. This begins an escape from the dark powers that seem to lurk everywhere.

The unsuspecting reader opens the book and is immediately engulfed in a mystery thriller that keeps you held firmly fast in their talons. Images of the Alfred Hitchcock classic, The Birds, intertwined with Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby. Stephen King no longer corners the market of macabre in Maine. This is a high-octane, action-packed, dark thriller that keeps the reader on the proverbial edge of their seats. Annie’s father, Edouard De Roche, has made a bargain with the devil and as we all know, someone has to pay the piper. That someone is Annie and her husband is determined to protect her at all cost.

Not a bad book... I really liked the story line and it moved along at a good pace. There was just something about the writing though that I couldn't get past. I hate to criticize anyone else's work. But it just felt off to me. Overall I did like it but don't think I'll read anything else by this author.

Soul Thief can be best summed up as a conspiracy theory theme park, full of at least a dozen common motifs related to government, religion, and the supernatural. The novel is so thick with obvious plot devices that it puts a Hollywood summer blockbuster to shame - making it too indigestible, even as 'mind candy' diversion.

The novel suffers from three major problems: plot, characterization, and editing. Soul Thief's plot - while I aim to avoid spoilers - is action-packed but thin. The early portion of the novel is spent with exposition and revealing many of the secrets that could have maintained suspense throughout much of the novel; instead, the novel relies on action-scenes seeming to be cut straight from a movie to keep the 'thriller' definition maintained. Meanwhile the main character, Doug - and to a lesser extent, his wife Annie - are gratingly insincere characters, who spend the majority of the plot denying any of the events happening to them despite insurmountable evidence to overcome doubts of their experience. Finally, a wide berth of editing problems from typographical errors to clunky syntax make it an exercise in patience to finish Soul Thief.

I found little to love about Soul Thief, even when I tried to take a less critical approach. I can at least offer praise, however, for the author tying the plot together without leaving gaping plotholes, and for offering some interesting characters (even if they weren't the protagonists). With some editing, and less cliches thrown at the plot, the story laid out in Soul Thief may have been far more digestible.

Note: I read this book 'out of order' from the series, having received a free copy. The author indicates that these books are meant to stand alone, and I did not feel 'lost' reading this book out of series; however I imagine this book remains essential to understanding the remaining in the series.

So, this book could have been about 20% shorter, and still told the same story. Or, the same length and actually CONCLUDED the damn story.

If you're expecting this to be a stand-alone story, please don't. Granted, it's book 2 of a 'series', but the previous book's protagonist is a secondary character in this book. Loose links, really. And the author claims that they can be read as stand-alone novels. Sure, if you like being left without a conclusion!

Also, what's with the unnecessary sex scenes? They felt so badly and unnaturally placed, it was cringeworthy. What's the deal with the House of Bones, that's mentioned SO often? We finally find out that it is known where it is, it's an actual, physical place, and then, what? Nothing? No mention, no visit, nothing. And then it's just gone. No investigation - just a missed opportunity to take the reader further into the story. So frustrating.

Sure, this book will grab onto your curiosity and you'll want answers! Lots of answers. You just might not get them!

Beautiful

This book was a beautiful composite of many different things from a great series and I am very happy with the concept for this series. Many great secrets are brought together and give the reader glimpse of what could be both past and future realities. I applaud the results and look forward to more levels of this series.

This was an excellent book. It had lots of action and plots within plots. The people had a believably difficult time accepting and adjusting to the supernatural factors that were going on. I really liked the mysteries around the collector.

I Believe

The author weaves what seems like the whole world of conspiracy theorists into a very well written story. Once again I was compelled to read late into the night and I wasn't disappointed!

I would have prefered the few sex scenes portrayed in the book to be less graphic, but if you can get by those it is decent. I am interested in where the series is going.
