About the author

People best know long didactic poems and historical plays, such as Don Carlos (1787) and William Tell (1804), of leading romanticist German poet, dramatist, and historian Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller.

This philosopher and dramatist struck up a productive if complicated friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during the last eighteen years of his life and encouraged Goethe to finish works that he left merely as sketches; they greatly discussed issues concerning aesthetics and thus gave way to a period, now referred to as classicism of Weimar. They also worked together on Die Xenien ( The Xenies ), a collection of short but harsh satires that verbally attacked perceived enemies of their aesthetic agenda.

نمایشنامه شرقی آغاز می شود، غربی اوج می گیرد و دوباره شرقی پایان می یابد .

شرقی آغاز می شود چون داستان همان داستان مسابقه برای ازدواج با یک شاهدخت است. همچنین شرقی است چون نمادین است و حکمت مثل همیشه در چهره ای مؤنث ظاهر می شود و طالبان جان برکف خود را می طلبد - زیرا این مسابقه مسابقه ای نیست از جنس بریدن سر اژدها، بلکه مسابقه ای است بر سر حل کردن سه معما.

غربی ادامه پیدا می کند چون بحث ناگهان به سمت حقوق از دست رفته ی زنان می رود و آزادی های آنها و ابای شاهدخت از به تملک یک مرد درآمدن را فریاد می کند.

شرقی پایان می یابد چون آن همه نزاع با سلطه ی مردان، بواسطه ی عشق به قهرمان مرد از میان می رود و شاهدخت با قلبی پر هوس و پر عشق به آغوش مردی پناه می برد

اما جدای از این ها از همان ابتدا رویکردهای رومانتیک درش بارز است . مهم نیست این اشارات در اصل اثر هم هستند یا صرفا زاییده ی قلم شیلر، مهم این است که شیلر به آنها از دید خود نگاه می کرده است و معنایی رومانتیک را به آن حمل می کرده. مرادم از این معانی رمانتیک چیست؟ ارگانیک و زنده بودن اثر هنری - آنجا که صرف یک نقاشی از توراندخت مرد را در سیطره ی خود گرفتار می کند - ، ناتمامیت اثر هنری - آنجا که اذعان می شود راز هستی و زیبایی هرگز در یک اثر به تمامه جمع نمی شود و آنجا که تورانداخت زیبایی را بیرون از تملک همگان می شمارد - ، انتخاب دلیرانه و جان فشانی علی رغم همه ی عبرت ها و حزم اندیشی های دیگران - نفس داستان بیانگر این امر است - و سرانجام حضور پررنگ تصادف و رخداد - نفس گرفتار شدن جوان در زیبایی توراندخت و روبرو شدن هایش با این و آن

Hmm, lieber Friedrich, da war ich mir bei vielen anderen deiner Werke sehr viel sicherer, wie ich es zu finden habe. Hier bin ich mir noch nicht ganz schlüssig.
Auf der einen Seite bleibt es sprachlich auf lange Sich eindeutig hinter den grandiosen Eskapaden anderer Stücke zurück (Man denke da nur an Wortverbindungen wie "Weib, willst du das Violoncello am Hirnkasten wissen?", Kabale und Liebe, Miller zu Millerin). Auf der anderen Seite ist da aber auch dieser eine geniale Satz: „Pantalon (leise zu Tartaglia): ‚Rappelt's der Majestät? Was kömmt sie an,
Daß sie in Versen mit sich selber spricht?‘“. Das ist große Kunst!
Auf der einen Seite kommt zu der einen nicht gerade sympathischen Frauenfigur (Turandot) ein ganzes Arsenal an alle klassischerweise weiblich besetzten Charakterzügen (Naivität (Zelima), Dümmlichkeit (Skirina), Missgunst (Adelma) hinzu. Andererseits widersteht Schiller trotz aller Misogynität bei der stereotypen Sicht auf die Damenwelt – ganz im Gegensatz zu Adami, der Puccinis Oper zwei Jahrhundert nach Schiller librettiert – der Versuchung, Turandot als armselige #besseresWortfürdieCharaktereigenschaftfindenimmerwiedereinengegebenenSchwurimmerzubrechen) Femme Fatal ohne einen Funken Würde zu zeichnen: Bei ihm ist die chinesische Prinzessin zwar inkonsequent, aber weniger aus Stolz als aus der überraschend feministischen Position heraus, die Ehe als Vereinnahmung der Frau durch den Mann zu betrachten.
Auf den ersten Blick scheinen die Figuren seltsam unvermittelt – bei Timur, der sich gleich mehrmals Kalafs Namen coram aus dem Leib brüllt, vielleicht auch einfach nur selten dämlich – zu handeln. Auf den zweiten ist die magere Vorlage um einige interessante – wenn auch klischeereiche – Vorgeschichten der einzelnen Person angereichert. Das hat auch seinen Reiz und zeigt einer nur die Opernversion mit ihren Opern-typischen Plotmechanismen kennenden Leserin (mir) die vergleichsweise hohe Komplexität der Diegese auf.
Kurzum: Kein Oberknaller wie die Räuber oder kein großes Kino der Gefühle wie in Maria Stuart oder kein Kampf der Prinzipien wie im Wilhelm Tell, aber eine durchaus kurzweilige, empfehlenswerte Lektüre in einer ruhigen Stunde!

I liked the concept. This story was referred to me by a friend, and it was interesting and well-written. I'm not a fan of the characterization of Turandot, as she seems unlovable, but it is really more of a fear of losing her identity and being owned by a man that she comes up with these riddles to prevent from marrying. It's an old story, and has been changed several times throughout, like the Opera is different from the play...but I think it was a novel idea for its time. If someone was to tell the story today, I would hope they would humanize Turandot more and make her understood.
Nice to read something recommended to me. I feel slightly more cultured now!! ;)

Wer wie ich keine Opern mag, aber wissen will, was eigentlich in Turandot passiert, kann die kurze Dramavorlage von Schiller lesen. Der Text wirkte auf mich an einigen Stellen unfreiwillig komisch, fast wie eine Parodie, und aus dem Blickwinkel gelesen fand ich ihn ganz unterhaltsam.

I'm torn with this one. The plot structure was smooth and this moved quickly. The Orientalism was crude and grating, though Schiller was obviously poking fun at European stories set in exotic locations, it didn't quite come off.

What's more, I read this because of Puccini's opera, and I have to say the opera has far more depth, largely because the music gives such a menacing, romantic tone to the piece. Parts were similar to Puccini and parts were changed, and I prefer Puccini's version. It has more symbolic depth.

My love of Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of "Nessun dorma" from Turandot initiated my desire to read the book. Although a theme that has been utilized during historical eras, Schiller's excellent prose and sensitivity make this a truly notable book.
