Exodus #2

Exodus: Part 2

Rate this book
Every book of the Bible tells us what is true about God. In Genesis we see Him as Creator and Covenant Maker. In Exodus we see Him as our strong Deliverer who sets us free from sin and death.

In this 10-session study of Exodus 19–40, journey through the story of how God shepherds His newly-liberated children into an understanding of what their freedom means: lives consecrated for service to God and to one another. Revisit familiar scenes of the giving of the Ten Commandments, the idolatrous worship of a golden calf, and of the intricate details of the tabernacle. And with fresh perspective, ask what these stories teach God's children today about how to live as those set free.

In every page of the Bible, learn to see Christ through the stories of His people. And discover how the God who created you and made a covenant with you will deliver you from death to life, for His name and renown.

Jen Wilkin’s studies are just a joy to do. Probably some of the best I’ve done. Extremely well researched, informative and yet easy to follow and remember.
She really encourages sitting with the unknown, and seeking out the answers in the Word instead of just feeding you the answers which helps me retain information.
So much to learn about the 10 commandments, the golden calf, and the construction of the tabernacle and the detail that went into it.
I never thought I would be excited to learn more about Exodus but here I am 😊 highly recommend

This was a fantastic study! I did the God of Deliverance (Exodus 1-18) study prior to this and the two fit together seamlessly. Jen Wilkin, once again, encouraged and challenged me to give deep into Scripture and see the goodness, faithfulness, and justice of God throughout the book. It was amazing to see God’s design for the Ten Commandments as being for our good and the means to live in shalom (true peace) together, rather than just a list of rules meant to suck the joy out of life. Then the design of the tabernacle really opened my eyes to how detailed and symbolic God is - Everything He commands them has a purpose and points to the future work of Christ, the better Moses. God is patient, loving, and keeps his covenant with His people, even when they disobey, complain, and don’t trust Him. I highly recommend this - and all of her other studies too!

Another very good Jen Wilkin's study. The"God of Freedom," (part two) study of the second half of the book Exodus, greatly increased my understanding of the Tabernacle. I saw how the Tabernacle foreshadows Christ and His redemptive history as well as aspects of the Creation narrative. The benefits of studying God's Word through these carefully planned-out studies helps Bible students better understand and apply God's truth in daily living. After all, God tells us to “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15.

Did you know the veil to the temple was about four inches thick? Think about how that tore IN HALF after Jesus was crucified.
If you read Exodus and think, “what does all this acacia wood, and cubits, and bulls killing people have to do with me?”, do this study! Even if you don’t wonder those things, do this study! There is so much insight and wisdom and you will read through Exodus with a renewed sense of awe and wonder at our AMAZING God.

Just as it was with book one of her Exodus study, I now have a greater understanding of the entire story of Moses and the people of Israel, along with the more detailed accounts of the building of the tabernacle and how the people responded along the way. Some of Jen’s questions require digging and effort that I wouldn’t normally do on my own, so I’m thankful to have her book study to guide and push me. Her (borrowed) 10 Commandment memorization technique is also so helpful!

When Chapelstreet Women decided on Jen Wilkin’s God of Freedom for our winter study, I was all in! Who doesn’t desire freedom?! But as I delved into the latter half of Exodus I discovered that this Old Covenant (Testament) book is a signpost for the New Covenant (Testament) Jesus! Jesus came to fulfill the ten commandments! Jesus is the East Gate to the Tabernacle! He made atonement with the sacrifice of His life on the altar of the cross. Jesus is the bronze basin to which we regularly visit for confession and forgiveness. He is the Light of the world. His body is the showbread and veil that was torn, separating us from God’s holy presence. Jesus is our great high priest who sacrificed His life once for all and His intercession is the incense! Jesus replaced the golden calf by becoming our spotless lamb. Just as Moses was faithful to build the tabernacle and lead God’s people, so Jesus was faithful to BE the Tabernacle and intercede for God’s people! Jesus is my Exodus from my landscapes of lost causes. In Him, I am redeemed from captivity liberty!

Last fall, I did “God of Deliverance,” Jen Wilkin’s Bible study on Exodus 1-18. This fall, I finished Exodus with her study of chapters 19-40, called “God of Freedom.”

I enjoy Wilkin’s Bible studies. I find that she comes up with insights I often hadn’t considered before. This is important to me in a Bible study, since I’ve been reading the Bible for so long. She takes various elements of interpreting literature (a “literary lens”) and uses them in the Bible. She’s a deep thinker, and I appreciate that.

So, in “God of Freedom,” the children of Israel have left Egypt where they had lived in slavery. Wilkin says the first part of Exodus sees God getting his people out of Egypt. This second part sees God getting Egypt out of his people.

The study covers Moses getting the Ten Commandments, coming down and finding the people worshiping the golden calf, and then covers the instructions for and construction of the tabernacle.

Some things I made note of:

* Exodus 19:4 “‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” The terminus of the exodus was not a place, but a person (God).
* We should read the 10 commandments in an “enhanced” way. For instance, instead of congratulating ourselves for being clear on “do not murder,” we might go beyond that to try to do the opposite in being a live-giver or a life-nurturer with our speech and actions.
* Exodus 20-23 is the “Book of the Covenant,” a list of laws and rules that can get a little dry. Wilkin suggests that the detail here was to give the Israelites specifics on how to live, so that they would not re-create the situation they’d just left in Egypt.
* In the tabernacle, the table was to have 12 loaves of bread. After feeding the 5000, there were 12 loaves left over (which indicates the presence of God, the bread of life).
* The interior of the tabernacle, grand with its fancy fabrics and gold, suggest heaven’s reality. The court’s courtyard though shows earth’s reality, with the sounds/sights/smells of the many, many sacrifices of animals going on. She discussed how awful it must have been to be in the midst of all that death with the copious amounts of blood, animals crying, etc.
* At one point she mentioned water symbolizing chaos and disorder and notes that there is no sea in Heaven.
* The anointing oil and incense is to be made in a distinctive way, which would have given the tabernacle and priests a specific smell that one would associate with them. Are we, in our lives, giving off the aroma of Christ?
* In chapter 32, God seems frustrated with his people’s actions with the golden calf and threatens to destroy them. Moses talks with him and seems to change his mind. This is one of those tricky scripture passages. Wilkin suggests that here, God is testing Moses to see his response. She suggests that when Moses breaks the stone tablets, he is doing symbolically what the people have done with God’s laws.
* When bad things happen, is your presupposition “God is good”? If so, then how might this be good? We should read the old testament not asking “Is God good?” but “Since God is good …”
* Moses goes up and down the mountain 7 times in Exodus. In Matthew, which draws much imagery from Exodus, Jesus ascends 7 different mountains.

As I have with the other studies of Wilkin’s I have done, I got a lot from this one and would recommend it. Along with each of the 10 sessions, there is a 30-45 minute video Wilkin has made where she expounds on the readings for the week. The videos really add to the study.

We went through this study and video series in our Women's Bible Study this spring. Both the study questions and the teaching were outstanding. Many of us have studied Exodus before but we felt that we learned so much and were left in awe of our God. The expansive focus on the 10 commandments was very well done. Jen reminded us often to come to the text with the right presupposition- God is a good God. With that in mind, we can explore how the events fit into God's goodness. I think this study left us craving more of God's word and craving a growing and deeper relationship with God.

A really good resource for understanding the second half of the book of exodus. The history of the Jewish people in exile, the transformation of Moses from a timid man on the run to the leader of a nation, and the construction of the tabernacle, it’s all in here. Jen Wilkin does any excellent job of leading you through the “why does this matter and what does this mean” questions. The video lessons that accompany each week do a great job of expanding upon the lessons and reinforcing what we’ve learned.

Jen is an incredible Bible teacher, able to clearly illuminate the themes of Exodus, tie them to other parts of scripture, and bring spiritual understanding to the passages studied. I finished this study with a much broader understanding of Exodus, It's relation to Christ and the new testament, and it's themes of redemption for the Israelites and for sin in general. Highly recommended

This was the second part of a study on the book of Exodus. The daily homework wasn't overwhelming and it set the stage for Jen's weekly teaching lesson. This is the first study I've done which included access to the DVD lessons, although the cost of the book was more expensive. Jen, as always, has great insight and I learn so much from her studies.

I appreciate Jen Wilkin's study of the scripture. The only reason that I didn't rate this as a 5-star book is because I wish there was a bibliography -- or at least mention of why she has come to a conclusion instead of just stating something. (This may be more in the video portion than the actual book, but since they tie together it's worth noting.)

Great Bible study. It is hard to tackle the building of the Tabernacle but she did it really well. I really appreciate the format of these Bible studies too. She encourages people to examine scripture first and instead of thinking this is what I get out of it, she encourages people to say what is the text actually saying.

Wilkin (as always) does a great job of taking what can be difficult-to-interpret Old Testament books and makes them accessible to the layperson. One of her most effective practices is simply forcing the reader to slow down. I had multiple "aha" moments in this study that were created simply by following her instructions to, for example, draw out the layout of the tabernacle.

This is a good study. Start at the beginning with the God of Creation and work your way through the studies. My absolute favorite was the God of Covenant. I learned so much from that study.

Love this Bible Study! Great questions to dig deeper into Exodus. Jen Wilkin is able to ask questions in such a way that it reveals things that I missed in the text!
