We met Hattie Harris in The Secret History of Hattie Ha Ha…begins. We met Jake Logan also. They were barely into their 20s when they found each other, fell in love and were torn apart by lies and jealousy, and a Hurricane also named Hattie. This picks up years later. Jake isn’t taking life well. He’s in an unhappy marriage. He’s in a job that he likes ok, but the sunshine doesn’t come into this world. His father Murray is existing. Delores couldn’t be more carefree. Hattie, well, she’s been in a constant fight for her life. After 12 years, she finally gets to see Jake for the first time and it was a most unpleasant experience. But the path to truth is rarely straight and narrow and short, and this is their journey toward it.

Honestly, this is my least favourite book by SM Mala. I liked the first half well, except for the cliffhanger ending, but I had this second book so it was ok. This book dealt too much with everyone else’ issues and everyone decided that sex was the answer to all troubles and sorrows. Not that I mind sex in books. I like me a good sex scene, but everyone was having sex. And it isn’t like “Oh Murray and Delores are partners.” Nope, it went into their sex life details. Or Jake and Hattie would be arguing because she’s constantly keeping secrets, and instead of answering him, she’d divert his attention by nookie and voila he’d get amnesia about what he was wanting answers for. OR they would be arguing and BAM let’s get it on would start playing and they’d be listening to Marvin Gaye instead of actually communicating. And REALLY, that is what this entire book was about. A BIG bunch of NON-communicating people who FINALLY start talking. So, really the book could have been shortened and it would have been a more concise read. And the epilogue. GREAT…because I do math it made me cry. :( Though I’m glad that she laughed. She deserved lots of laughter.

Ms. Mala’s characters are still true to form in this book but more mature (for the most part) I still like many of them, though I think Murray was a naive putz sometimes and Hattie needed to understand that she wasn’t doing anyone any favours by keeping them in the dark. I liked Louis. He was a cool kid. The question is, would I recommend it. I would if someone read the first part (which I thought was decent!!) and needed closure because of that cliffhanger ending.
