I'm really a fan of Huff and Puff! After last week my five year old budding reader read all by herself Huff and Puff Have Too Much Stuff! and was excited tonight to attempt Huff and Puff and the New Train she did really well. There were less than a handful of words she really needed help on and a good amount of contractions that were just the right amount if challenge. I'm very pleased with this book and shes delighted with her progress and reading FUN! stories.
This is written by the same author that has written several of the Cat in the Hat Learning Library titles, which we also enjoy. The illustrations just as with the other one are vivd and bright. Uber pleased.
In this take on the story of the tortoise and the hare, Huff and Puff are in awe of a shiny new train in the yard. When the newcomer challenges them to a race, they know they will probably lose, but they are determined to do their best. Sure enough, their persistence pays off.
This is a very entertaining and colorful take on the tale, and phrased in a way that will help students understand the moral without going overboard. The simple wording, ample rhymes, large font, and expressive illustrations make this one perfect for children who are just beginning to read on their own.
Basic plot: The tortoise and the hare, but with trains.
The basic message is that one should just keep chugging and success will come. A good message, to be sure. The art is colorful and well done. The text rhymes and kept my little guy engaged while reading.
In the end, I really haven't got an explanation of the 3-star rating other than that it just didn't really do much for me. I think other books have taken the same message, done more with it, and done it better, so this one kind of fell flat even with the colorful art.
My six year old did well this book on her own. Definitely helped to hone beginner reader skills. We stoked together on words we weren't sure about, but she felt great after knowing she read this book mostly on her own.
Excellent choice for the newest independent readers. Each page only has a few lines of text in large print. Rhyming text will help new readers sound out and predict the next words in the story.
