As American military flier Michael Cope nears retirement, he finds his life coming apart. The emotional toll of marital problems leaves him unprepared for what he faces in Latin America -- a major escalation of the war on drugs, and attacks by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the FARC. A search for a downed pilot draws Cope into the bloody realities of a country infested with leftist insurgencies and rightist death squads. In the tradition of All Quiet on the Western Front and The Thin Red Line, Thomas W. Young explores the dedication and sacrifices of the individual fighting man.
Excellent novel. Interesting characters, though it doesn't get too deep into them. Well-written (and edited.) The time jumps at the end of each chapter seemed gimmicky at first, but end up working really well. Accurate, fast-paced, and fun.
What a GREAT READ !!!! I have now read EVERYTHING that this fine military veteran-writer has written. Although not my favorite, it is still VERY VERY GOOD! Fast paced. Great military action. Great aviation stories. I do not know Young personally. But I am a recently retired Guardsman. This author portrays very well the challenges of ALL of our forces serving "in harm's way" - the danger, the adrenaline rush, the stress on the families "left behind" at home, etc. I will follow this author and READ everything from now on, IMMEDIATELY when it is published. Strong work.
