I Don't Know Why I Swallowed the Fly: My Fly-Fishing Rookie Season

Rate this book
The next John Gierach is a woman! In this sprightly, humorous account of her induction into the fraternity of fly fishers, adventure writer Jessica Maxwell waves her rod wildly over a number of western rivers, pointedly observing the traditions and techniques of this pastime and its curious subculture.

Beautifully written. Most chapters there is a generalization about gender(s) that is very dated. Beyond that the book is an excellent testament to learners willing to be fools for the sake of passion.

Jessica Maxwell is a wonderful writer. She writes with intelligence, humanity and humor. I especially thought that her musings on her father and her relationship with him, added so much depth to a fly fishing book for godsakes. Loved it!
