A father and son work a farm where several musical instruments have been discarded in the house and barn. The boy wishes to hear the sounds of music, but his father says there is much work to get done. One night, when the moon rises full, the instruments remember.
I wasn't sure where The Old Banjo was going to take me, but it has brought me a warm, cozy feeling accompanied by lyrical music. I especially love the shadowy drawings by Stephen Gammell that bring all the instruments to the edge of a dream of possibilities. And fanciful and free, the music, farmer, and boy are carried away on the wind.
This is a great book to share with kids are still full of hope, imagination, and dreams. No matter their age.
Delightful reading, wonderfully illustrated -- and not a straightforward story -- a bit of the fantastical/fantasy involved. So why when this held such appeal have I resisted reading fantasy or anything close in my adult reading?
