A lot of people wouldn't like how harsh this man is on things like pre/extramarital sex...but whatever, he's a priest, and one has to expect things like that from religious leaders.

He also doesn't pull any punches. This book is not for the faint of heart. He does (did) hard, hard, hard work in some of the most difficult and dangerous circumstances you can imagine. Work that needs to be done on an extraordinary level that most people would rather just turn their heads and look the other way about.

I read this book as a teenager. I was touched by his selfless acts. This was the first book to ever make me cry. I was so moved by his philanthropy that I called the Covenant House after reading this book only to find out that he had long passed away. Bless his heart.

I read this before allegations were made against the author. It was disappointing to learn that he was part of the problem, not part of the solution.
