I really enjoy these publications. Essentially graphic novels without claiming to be, they mix cartoonish pictures with collage, plus history and historical perspective (such as important world events or thinkers that might have effected the artist at the time) in with the biography.

I particularly like the part where brecht is judging a prestigious poetry contest. He is disgusted with the "sentimentality, hypocrisy and ignorance" of poetry chooses a poem called "Hey! Hey! The Iron Man!" written in greeting-card verse about a champion cyclist. Oh, Brecht! What a hoot!

Other than that, it's pretty hard to sum up the book, cause you know, then it'd just be a history book. That's what this aims not to do. You want easy engagement? Then check this shit out!! All i feel like doing then is giving a quote from Brecht that sums up his epic theater statute pretty well:

The theatre needs no justification other than entertainment, but this it requires absolutely.

The theatre can provide weaker (simpler) and stronger works, reach their climax just as the sexual act reaches it in love; they are more ramified, richer in mediation, more contradictory and richer in consequences...The theatre must surprise its audience and this is done by the technique of distancing it from what is familiar. Such a technique enable the theatre to exploit dialectical materialism, in which things exist only in so far sa they are being transformed and are thus not in harmony with themselves. This applies equally to the feelings, attitudes, and opinions through which the social life of man is expressed...

ONLY THAT WHICH IS FILLED WITH CONTRADICTIONS IS ALIVE!

Türkçe çevirisinde gördüğüm en berbat yazı stili kullanılmış. Gözlerimin astigmat derecesi arttıysa bu kitap yüzündendir.

A good introduction to Brecht with fun zine-like illustrations and graphic design.

four stars because although this book is sympathetic to Brecht being a communist, it does not take the position of a communist or really understand contradictions. that and ... some of the illustrations made me go "is this racist? hmmm 🤔"

Really helpful approach (especially for beginners) through the comic character to dive into the life and heritage of this special dramatist.

This synopsis of Brecht's life and work incorporates graphic novel elements. But don't worry - the vocabulary and concepts are not dumbed down in the slightest. I have always struggled to understand Brecht plays, and will likely continue to do so, but the explanations in this book will definitely help.
