"Erica Orloff is a native New Yorker, novelist, blogger, mother of four, chronic insomniac, alt-rock loving, voracious reader (and prolific writer) who has written over twenty novels across a number of genres and pen names. She currently lives in Virginia where she rarely sleeps, roots for the Yankees and the NY Giants, knits in her almost-never free time, herds worms with her six-year-old Pirate Boy, and tries to hold onto what little sanity she has left." spoilers are warned with ( ) so read carefully! and take what I say with a grain of salt...I'm picky...
this was alright, can definitely tell this was written in 2005. urban legend read like a cheesy/campy vampire show which, if you're in the mood for it's good. but some lines just felt too try hard and it felt like this was her first vampire book she's written in a way? unsure because this is my first book of hers so I don't know if that part is true but it just came off as this was a branch off from what someone normally writes because it sometimes didn't feel right...if that makes sense??? story wise I did like it and was the better of the two! Though, in my opinion (minor spoiler)...and I know it's because of the time but I was really put off by the 9 11 and tr*mp references, they weren't really all that important to the story in the end and just felt unnecessary. the tr*mp one was just a lame pop culture of the time reference, of all the rich people of course we use him as a comparison 🙄. and the 9 11, while I understand it's his past and his motivator for where he is...it still felt like a performative add on. maybe because we are following tessa and learning about her and don't get more on that part of his life and how it affected him in better detail or more of his side in general so it doesn't seem as significant to the story?? but again just small gripes I have with it that didn't take much away from me flying through it!
I just wish like with movies, urban legend could be remastered because it has potential to be even better and maybe have a second book because I do like it and was kinda wishing there was more when I finished.
the huntress was ok but not really for me, not a vampire hunter fan unless it's vampire x hunter enemies to lovers drama type of book...otherwise it's an immediate meh we'll see.
(SPOILER) the serum route was interesting though didn't avail to much in the end unfortunately, I get there probably was no way/time to do it nor room left in the book to fit it but seeing a science approach to it would've been neat or even just to know more what was different about him other than being a rogue. (END)
I feel this could have maybe a spin off book as well because I was left wanting to know more (minor spoiler) about the volturi-esque vampires. not gonna go further than that but that's what I've been thinking about since finishing it.
don't misunderstand me thinking I hate the book, I don't! both stories were interesting in their own ways. urban legend was a unique vampire pov that I personally haven't read anything like before. I really liked tessa as a whole and how she evolved a.nd her mission evolved as times changed. camille's life was interesting...kinda wish we got a bit more on that but it's ok, there was enough to get the gist. I don't read vampire hunters so this was different of a read for me and I liked that! I also like the different approach to vampirism and looking for a scientific cure for it. I've read the strain so I know science doesn't have as much of a hold as one wants but I applaud the enthusiasm for that route anyway! I was hoping at least for a why choose situation, would've been interesting navigating that mess but I don't think there would've been room in her half for it but I understand the route we got :(
I'm glad I read it finally after getting it from a thrift store 5+ years ago! even though I am a bit bummed, I probably overhyped it to myself tbh, I still liked reading it! none of my complaints are enough to make me say I'm gonna donate it back, it's different from what I have in my vampire collection and I DO like it enough despite what I've said earlier! definitely give it a try anyway if I haven't scared you away, like I said in the beginning take what I said with a grain of salt! I'm just VERY picky when it comes to anything vampire related but it will take a lot more than what I said to make me hate something.
please come back and tell me if you do read it, would love to know what you thought!
I will be the first to admit that Harlequinn/Silouette is not my cup of tea and that I generally look down my nose at the "genre". That said, I'm around 50-60 pages into this book and while it isn't a fresh new story with never before seen ideas, I congratulate it for having character development and plot at all. I was bored on a break the day I picked this up so it gave me something to pass the time, but I wouldn't rush out to a book store to buy it or anything.
There are two stories in this book. I liked 'Urban legend' much more. I like the strong female character, sound moral values (given her situation) and the power of the woman to do anything physically or mentally she likes. Keep in mind this is a vamp story and so expect the lust to be there, although it is very tame in this story.
I liked the first story (Urban Legend) a lot more than the second (The Huntress). I liked Tessa a lot more than I did Camille. While both are very strong women I just didn't find Camille's story as interesting.
