Whoo boy This was my first dive into the stereotypical white-lady adult romance sector, and it was kind of a doozy. No badly written smut, so that was a plus. The story itself was quite riveting, it would have made a good movie plot or several-episode saga of "The West Wing." My heart was definitely beating a little faster than usual during the climax. The romance felt weird and forced, and the feminist ideals of a badass female VP did not translate well to the oddly helpless and emotionally inept character. My biggest problem was that the writing was super dense, and it became hard to keep track of all the characters, especially in the middle. I wasn't expecting great things, and I got less than great things.
U.S. Vice President Sybil Stone, aka Lady Liberty, has been pulled away from delicate peach negotiations between two warring countries because the most top secret facility in the U.S. has been compromised and a major bomb has been activated. She has 72 hours to get back to the U.S. and disarm it with whatever is in the briefcase attached to her wrist. Her flight leaves with a skelaton crew and no staff, which proves fortunate when it explodes over the Everglades. Sybil successfully ejects with Special Agent Jonathan Westford and together they evade capture from those who want her dead. Jonathan was her secruity detail, but transferred when he became emotionally involved. Now her ex-husband, a brilliant security expert wants her dead and has involved two terrorist organizations to help him.
Fast paced, unusual and very well done. No sex, but a romance developing/being exposed under great pressure. Good book!
This book is a top favorite of mine. I loved the power and vulnerability that came with Vice President Stone, and the steadfastness of the head of her protection detail Jonathan. They both resist each other for professional and personal reasons, which make so much sense but ultimately don't matter in the end. The constant danger and survival tactics they face kept me on edge right along with them. I loved how real the characters were, with sudden emotional mood swings and doubts plaguing them both, when both have so much confidence and experience in so many other situations. It's a great adventure to experience.
For some reason I had not read some of Hinze’s books. When I rediscovered one I had not read, I dived into it. Lady Liberty exemplified what we all want politicians to be— real, authentic, honest. On a whirlwind of catastrophe events, she takes the reader in some scary scenarios and manages to throw romance into the mix. I loved this one!
The plot was pretty good, and the main character was very likable, but the underlying romance element was ridiculously repetitive. The author did not need to dedicate half the book to telling us over and over again that the main character is afraid to love again. We get it.
