Phil Tufnell : What Now? - The Autobiography

Rate this book
The "Cat" has never been far from controversy - thrown out of both public and comprehensive school, bust ups with officialdom on and off the pitch, the violent incidents from his first marriage to an ex-prostitute, and the subject of numerous drugs allegations, most recently on the 1996/97 England tour of New Zealand. In his autobiograpy, Tufnell reflects on his topsy-turvy career in the game, and how at each dawn the establishment have undermined his game, from the years of Gooch's captaincy to the current era under Mike Atherton.

"Phil Tufnell: What Now?" provides readers with a breezy and entertaining account of the life and career of the charismatic former cricketer. Phil Tufnell's autobiography is filled with humor and anecdotes that reflect his easygoing personality, making it an enjoyable read for cricket enthusiasts.

Tufnell's witty and irreverent style shines through in the narrative, capturing the lighthearted spirit that endeared him to fans. The book successfully captures the essence of Tufnell's cricketing journey, including his early days, memorable matches, and experiences with the English cricket team. The author's storytelling is at its best when recounting amusing incidents and locker room camaraderie.

However, the autobiography falls short in terms of depth and introspection. While Tufnell provides glimpses into the challenges he faced, both on and off the field, the exploration remains on the surface. Readers hoping for a more profound understanding of Tufnell's mindset and personal growth may find the narrative lacking in substance.

The non-linear structure of the autobiography may also pose challenges for readers unfamiliar with Tufnell's cricketing career, as events are presented in a somewhat disjointed fashion. A more chronological approach could have facilitated a smoother flow and improved the overall coherence of the narrative.

One of the strengths of the book is its accessibility. Tufnell's storytelling is relatable, and his self-deprecating humor adds authenticity to the narrative. The inclusion of behind-the-scenes anecdotes and interactions with fellow players provides readers with an insider's view of the cricketing world.

While Tufnell's humor is a highlight, it occasionally feels like a shield, preventing a deeper exploration of the man behind the public persona. The book steers clear of delving too deeply into personal challenges or the impact of fame, leaving certain aspects of Tufnell's life unexplored.

In conclusion, "Phil Tufnell: What Now?" is a light-hearted and amusing autobiography that offers cricket fans an entertaining journey through the career of a beloved player. While it may lack the depth found in some sports memoirs, Tufnell's charm and humor make it a pleasant read for those looking for a relaxed exploration of cricketing anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories.

I note that even Tuffers has had to become a tad, just a tad you'll be glad to hear, politically correct. The edition shown has our louche hero dragging on a cigarette, whereas my reprint has him sitting sagely in a chair. Ah, how are the flighty fallen. Rattling good stuff from the cat, long may he sneak behind the pavilion, if not a fag, maybe a quick vape...
