When Vicky's father is arrested on a charge of stealing over a million pounds from the bank where he works, she is determined to prove his innocence. Helped by her brother and his best friend, Vicky decides to try to find the real thief by hacking into the bank's computer system.
Hacker opens with Vicky and the rest of her Year 8 class (including her adopted brother Gib and his annoying friend Chaucy) waiting to take a Maths exam. Inside the exam hall Vicky notices several people cheating, including her friend Maggie. Vicky has a programmable calculator, and writes a programme to work out interior and exterior angles and areas of shapes. Unfortunately since she finishes her exam in 20 minutes instead of two hours, her teacher assumes that she is the hacker that stole the Maths exam. She is given a letter by the head teacher to take home.
However, on returning home, she and Gib discover that something far more serious than cheating at an exam is concerning her parents. Her dad has been accused of transferring one million pounds from the bank where he works to his own account. Vicky and Gib set out to prove his innocence by hacking into the bank; however this puts Vicky in terrible danger from the real thief.
I loved this book. Not only is it a thrilling adventure, but Vicky and Gib's relationship is very believable, as is the ebb and flow of "tween" friendships. Vicky is mixed race, as is her adopted dad, and the detail of her darker skin making her feel as though she doesn't quite belong to the rest of her family rings very true. Identity and ethnicity are not the most important aspects of this book, but it is great to see that the problems needing to be solved in this story. And as children pick up the ideas of "girls' subjects" and "boys' subjects" so early, it is very positive to have a book aimed at 8+ featuring a girl computer programmer! It is unfortunate that the computing aspects of this book have dated, but I would hope that the thriller plotline and believable characters would carry young readers through.
I am going to admit it wasn’t exactly what I expected but still a good book.
My favourite bit is towards the start. It is just as I imagined, with the mother sitting with the children and telling then the news, it filled me with sympathy when I thought how it happened to a regular family.
Although I did try, I found it quite hard to feel a connection with the characters. I did feel sorry for them, but no connection. I feel as well as the main character trying to prove her Dad’s innocence she also learned how to fit in with her family.
I think the blurb makes it seem the Dad is in prison and I assumed it was for murder or something, but the truth is he went to trial and came home, although he was going to have his trial later and maybe put in prison. At the end of the book, it becomes evident that he wouldn’t have even gone to prison, as the people that actually did it said they would ensure that didn’t happen.
Overall, I thought it was a pretty good book and would recommend it to anyone who wants an easy read - as I read it in a day.

I didn't dislike this book but there wasn't anything amazing about it either. Obviously being a book aimed at a younger audience it was quite an easy read, but the storyline was interesting and it was good at keeping you guessing as to what was going to happen.
This brill book is about a 14 year old girl who is an expert hacker. After her dad is thought guilty after 7000 pounds being found in his bank account. For a short while Eric David's system manager is thought guilty by them but at the end their aunt is found guilty and is sentenced to three years in prison also after that she is found wearing a stolen 100000 pound earing by those same children and their friend. I learnt to never steal from anyone.
Although this is a book aimed at teenagers, I'm a sucker for any writing on the subject of hacking (blame the movie "Wargames") and so got stuck in to this.
The story is about a young girl, adopted after her parents die, and who's adopted father has been wrongly accused of electronically stealing money from the bank he works at.
The girl proceeds to try to clear his name, with plenty of shenanigans along the way.
There are some touching moments with the lead character wrestling with her adoption, her place in her new family and her friends too. Much teen angst, but well written.
I enjoyed this book. It was a good reminder of computing in my younger days!
Hacker is a book written by Malorie Blackman and is within the crime genre. In the book there are two main characters who are Victoria and Gib and are brother and sister Their Dad has been accused of transferring a million pounds to his bank account and Victoria is convinced that her dad would never do such a thing so she perseveres to prove that it was not her dad. During the end of the book Victoria and Gib come to a conclusion that it was her “Aunt Beth” (not her real aunt) had been the one to transfer the money. This is due to her suspiciously locking up Victoria in her basement. By the end of the book it is found out that Beth had stolen 7 million from the bank (she worked there as a programmer) and put all that money into buying jewellery and selling it in Brazil. She later gets arrested alongside her partner Sebastian and Victoria and Gibs Dads name is cleared.

A great book and such an amazing story! I got taught a great life lesson from it- that Patience is great and to never trust everyone! Also, I learnt more vocab. :) Thank you to the amazing writer Malorie Blackman, Im looking forward to read more of her books.
This book is amazing and Malorie Blackman inspires me a lot. This book had a surprising twist to it that made me even doubt my own family just like pretty little liars and prison break.
CYBERLEDGER SOLUTIONS SUCCESSFULLY RECOVERED MY LIFE SAVINGS There is a specific, paralyzing kind of silence that follows the realization that your life’s savings have vanished into the digital ether. My name is Harris Aydin, and for a long time, that silence was my only companion. I am sharing my story today not just to vent my relief, but to offer a lifeline to anyone currently standing in the shadow of a devastating financial loss.
My ordeal began with what I thought was a savvy move an online investment that promised a secure future. Instead, it became a nightmare that cost me $88,000.00. Watching that amount of money become trapped, seeing the "profits" I had worked so hard for stay just out of reach, and realizing the platform had no intention of ever letting me withdraw was soul-crushing. I felt a mix of intense shame, burning anger, and an absolute, hollow helplessness. I felt like I had failed myself and my family.
I spent weeks scouring the internet, looking for a shred of a solution. That is when I first discovered Cyberledger Solutions. I read the reviews stories of people who had been exactly where I was and felt a cautious, trembling flicker of hope. I finally reached out and explained my situation, detailing how I had found their services through the testimonials of others who had been saved from the brink.
Whats App: +1.8.0.5.8.9.6.7.3.2.4
From that first interaction, everything changed. They didn’t just treat me like a ticket number; they recognized the emotional weight of my $88,000 loss. Their team was professional, transparent, and incredibly empathetic. They didn't make empty promises; they provided a clear, technical roadmap of how they intended to trace and reclaim what was rightfully mine.
The recovery process was a masterclass in expertise and persistence. After the long, dark tunnel of the initial scam, the moment I received confirmation that my funds were being successfully recovered felt like a physical weight lifting off my chest. I truly thank God for the intervention of this team. They navigated the complexities of the digital ledger to ensure a successful recovery.
If you are reading this and feeling the crushing weight of a similar loss, please know that you do not have to carry it alone. Financial restoration is possible when you have the right experts in your corner. I wholeheartedly recommend Cyberledger Solutions to anyone facing this struggle. They restored more than just my money; they restored my peace of mind.
The truly scary thing about undiscovered lies is that they have a greater capacity to diminish us than exposed ones. When people cheat in any arena, they diminish themselves-they threaten their own self-esteem and their relationships with others by undermining the trust they have in their ability to succeed and in their ability to be true. Cheating is the most disrespectful thing one human being can do to another. If you aren’t happy in a relationship, end it before starting another one. Those who cheat on their partners who are loyal to them; don’t deserve them. It is a trashy attitude to disrespect a person who is loyal in a relationship, by cheating on him or her. If you succeed in cheating someone, don’t think that the person is a fool realize that the person trusted you much, more than you deserve. If you noticed any suspicious act on your partner if he or she is cheating. You need to write to them to help you remotely spoof on the target phone to retrieve text messages, call logs, social media activities, bank information and many more. They deliver best services and get you the peace of mind you deserve as my experience with them reveals everything that have been hidden for years. Email:HACKERTECHS001 @ GMAIL COM
This book follows Vicky and her Step-Brother, Gib, as they try to clear their Dad's name - the bank he works for accuses him of stealing one million pounds. One of the recurring themes of the book is Vicky using her skills in computing, which she has developed thanks to her father, so she can solve the problems that are thrown at her.
Main Review
This book is good but that is essentially it. I did enjoy the plot, however, with the question of:
"What if you had to become a criminal to clear your Dad's name?" - found on the cover of the 2022 Corgi edition of Hacker by Malorie Blackman
being an interesting one. The Characters are alright and, to be fair, this is just a children's book. The same can be said for the atmosphere. I found the logic to be a little bit off, but there was never anything too flawed that ruined the book. Overall I would recommend it to people between the age of 7-10 unless you just want an easy quick read.
HEY! It's true I LOVE Malorie Blackman's books (just read my 2016 top ten) and I really did enjoy this book, however, it wasn't one of her best works.
This was first published in 1992 meaning its an earlier one, published 9 years before black and white (the first noughts and crosses book). When this was written she was a relatively new writer, when it came to popularity.
The reason this only got three and a half was because the story didn't start to get exciting until the end 80 pages. It felt like there was a 150 page beginning a 60 page middle and a twenty-page end.
I have to say wow, though. The amount of research Malorie must have done is INCREDIBLE, this book was almost a course in computer science.
The end was a shock. I did not expect that the way. SPOILER: Sebastian and Beth turned on them and turned out to be evil people. I really hated them at the end of reading this book. They were very well written characters.
I recommend this book to anyone from age 9 - 11

Hacker is a great cyber mystery novel that's perfect for children and young readers. I can easily see a child pick this up and become curious about the world of programming and computer systems. With simple but effective descriptions of how certain commands and programs work, as well as displaying real code. There's also a neat mystery, that turned and twisted as it went along.
My main gripe was that the first half of the book goes a semi-slow pace. While I understand that was to give a reader time to understand the complexity of a banking system, it did make the pace drag at points, only picking up once our characters got some new info, before dragging again. Though, it doesn't stay this way. Especially the last third of the book, where the story steps up a gear and becomes more entertaining.
All in all, its a decent novel that I think most kids would have a good time reading
A young Middle Grade novel that works even though the technology references are a bit outdated. It's a fast read, and I generally liked it, but was kind of put off by an early scene between the main character and her brother about her having been adopted while he's the biological son of their parents. You're kind of hit over the head with it and her struggles with belonging, but they come together for a common cause for most of the book without having addressed how hurtful he was. That said, the plot takes some good turns and wraps up satisfyingly for a young reader. Both of my 9yo sons read it independently and liked it.
