Don’t go too far past the temple walls. Don’t talk to anyone in town. Don’t stay out past curfew. Don’t disobey a Peace Enforcer.
After being cloistered away in the empath temple most of her life, twenty-six year old Iris runs away and inadvertently breaks every rule set out by her priest elders.
When she is accused of stealing and threatened with imprisonment, a mysterious man with a face of shadow saves her from her fate. She is unexpectedly drawn to this shadow man as his telepathic and empathic powers seem to rival her own.
Finally away from the temple, Iris seeks out more information on her past and why her parents left her with the empath priests. She is thrown into a world she knows nothing about and must hone her psychic powers or fall prey to the Peace Enforcers who rule her world. Along the way, she can’t help but fall for the man behind the shadows as he keeps showing up when she needs help the most.
But when she discovers his true identity, she must decide between her heart’s desire or risk sacrificing the new life she has created away from the confines of the temple.
To my readers: this story takes place about 40 years prior to the Soul Realm Trilogy and can be read as a standalone book. It does not follow the same characters as the trilogy. This is by far my spiciest book, so be prepared for some heat. Enjoy!
3.75 I received an arc copy in exchange for an honest review
“The w-world doesn’t exist when I’m with you. I’m yours, even if you’re not m-mine.”
All right, the beginning took me a little while to get into… definitely some interesting components with their magic, the telepathy, and empathy powers. Then comes chapter 5. They only analogy I can think of is that when you call your dog and their head pops up, that’s kind of how I felt at chapter 5, like a dog getting all excited.
The story starts to unfold and we have the introduction of dual POV’s! Yassss.
Oliver: Definitely not your typical main male character. He’s introduced as confident and cocky but he has flaws and not the dark demon touch her and die vibe flaws. He has two personas and one is strong and confident while the other is sweet and shows his insecurities.
Iris: Was cute in the human realm. A bit naive as well. She is just a sweet girl with a lot of people around her that were very deceptive maybe not in a bad way at times, but I felt bad for her. She trusted too easily.
Elder Garett: Can eat a bag of 🍆’s
Overall I liked both characters but didn’t love them. I just didn’t feel the chemistry between them. THE plot was unique and Unlike any other fantasy/paranormal I’ve read. It will capture your attention and pull you in. I felt we needed a little bit more historical background about the dichotomy between the Priest, Souls and Peace Enforcers (PE’s). How they came to be, what created the original societal framework or world building as some would say. I felt we needed more there to understand. At least I did.
Special Mentions: 🫶🏻The tram ride 🫶🏻The Movie selection
Things that confused me somewhat: 👉🏻One thing thats bothering me. I don’t recall why he hides his face with the shadows when they met in the beginning. Don’t know what the point of that was. 👉🏻He is wearing jeans in the Soul Realm. A realm that has minimal technical. It’s more mystical. 👉🏻The Soul Realm had an office and hospital but electricity? I would think that they would call people healers. 👉🏻 I don’t recall them kissing… like really kissing.
This story took me a few chapters to really dive into. I haven’t read the other books in this world, but I am definitely going to now!
Enemies to lovers, a secret society perceived to be bad but is actually fighting against the bad guys, epic love, this book had it all.
When I wasn’t reading this book, I was thinking about it!
I loved the story, I loved the characters, the banter, the twists, everything.
I’m hoping to see Iris and Oliver in the other books 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Grateful to have gotten an ARC copy and to have experienced this story before the release. 🥰
This is a definite must read for anyone who like a little fantasy (telepathy, empathic priests, a whole different realm - the Soul Realm- but still a bit in the human realm, spiiiiiiiiice)

I was given this book to read for an honest review. So here it is. My review may contain spoilers.
This is the first book I've read of Camille Rene and I really enjoyed this book I loved the characters Iris and Oliver ❤️ I loved that Oliver had a stutter made him seem more relatable I often find in books they paint the main characters to be unflawed and perfect but it was nice that they both had relatable features.
Just a few criticism I noticed that the name of the town changed from Branton to Brenton. And the ending felt quite rushed it goes from a very intense seen to then skipping to 9 months later and their doing it over a mirror and that's the end.
If any one is like me and doesn't always read from chapter to chapter and can put a book down in the middle if chapter and come back to it later. I wouldn't suggest doing that with this book its written in 3rd person and although I loved that it went from different POVs because its written in 3rd person if I left the book and then came back to it it was difficult to remember whos POV it was currently under.
It was a short and sweet book wished it had been a bit longer to have extended the ending would have maybe been nice to see Iris and Oliver actually working together in the real world after everything.
I was given a copy of this book for a review. My review might contain spoilers.
*3.5 stars, rounded up to 4!*
As a concept, I am in love with this book. The writing was amazing throughout, and the ability to capture such raw emotion on paper was breathtaking.
This book had a little bit of everything, intrigue, world building, romance, humor (looking at you, hotel scene ;) and mystery. I was hooked from the beginning and didn't want to put it down.
I think I was let down at how short it was. The characters were so likeable, I was disappointed that the adventures were over so quickly. The ending especially felt rushed and clipped.
Overall, if you are looking for a fast, compelling read, this book is definently worth checking out. I am hopeful that more from this universe is coming, I'd love to see Iris and Oliver in action on the same side!
Thank you Camille Rene for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first time reading this authors work and I really enjoyed the book. It was a quick, easy read. I enjoyed the idea of the characters being able to push feelings out to others, communicate telepathically, have mind reading abilities and being able to transport/travel. I also really liked that the 2 main characters had areas that may appear as “flaws” to some people (port wine birthmark and a speech impediment). These issues were dealt with well and I appreciated the representation of those issues in a book.
The book also had some sexy scenes which I enjoyed!
The only thing I didn’t really like (and it was a minor issue) was that the initials PE was for Peace Enforcers but also could have been for Priest Elders and that part confused me a bit in the beginning as I was trying to learn the world building and characters.
All in all I enjoyed the book and this world of magic!
4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I truly enjoyed this book! The world building was fantastic and new. This was my introduction to the writer as well as the series as a whole. I plan to check out the other books that follow this one.
We begin with a fast paced start and we maintain that momentum throughout. My only complaint was a typo in the name of a city. The first couple of times we are told it is Branton, then it changes to Brenton. A minor issue but it is a pet peeve for me.
The ending felt a little rushed, but it is probably because I was enjoying the main characters. I wasn’t ready for it to end. I loved that there was representation of a person with a speech disorder. That isn’t something I have seen much and I appreciated that difference.
I received this book for free and it was a true gem. I wasn’t able to put it down and begrudgingly stopped briefly to feed the family.
Any book that has a FMC that is not 17-19 and a virgin is already off to a great start. The characters were easy to like and very entertaining.
I liked the different POVs but often got confused who I was reading if I put it down and picked it back up again due to the 3rd person narrative.
The book definitely could have been longer. I wanted more information on the world and the people from the Soul Realm. It was all so fascinating. I enjoyed it so much but felt the end was rushed, leaving me wanting more.
This was my first book from this author, and I loved it. I will be following up with the rest of the series. I am glad I broke my ARC reading and my first review cherry with this book.
This story has an interesting premise I liked the telepathy and empathy ‘powers’. The characters were also different with a strong male character with a stutter that made him immediately endearing. It’s a fun, short read. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because it was supposed to be an enemies to lovers but I never felt like they were really enemies. And I felt like there was no real buildup. They pretty much instantly liked each other and were willing to run away with each other after only a couple of meetings. I felt like the side characters weren’t fleshed out much so it gave me no reason to care about anyone other than the main characters. The spice was okay but I was expecting more of it.
I LOVED this book, as someone who has recently got into reading Sarah J. Maas, having similar themes immediately made me fall for it.
I often struggle with books when there are spelling, grammar or continuity mistakes and whilst reading this I think I only spotted one! This meant I could happily continue reading without a jarring experience.
I fell for the characters and genuinely experienced so many emotions throughout, I found myself smiling at points and I definitely tried to work out the twists- to no avail as they were so cleverly crafted.
I would 100% recommend this book and I am so looking forward to seeking out the trilogy.
Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a standalone prequel to a series. I read all three in the original Soul Realm series first and loved them! I enjoyed An Empath's Desire also, and while I like that in the series the details and backstop wasn't repeated in every book, they read as if the author assumes you read the previous books in the series. This one as a standalone though, I felt like it should have had more explanation of the world. Having read the other books I really loved this too, but I would recommend reading the series first.
I love escaping into this world Camille has created. The characters are relatable and the stories are so exciting. I hope there are more to come!
*Spoiler free review* I received an ARC for free, although I am leaving this review voluntarily 😁 My only complaint about this book is that it's not long enough! This was my first novel by Camille and as I hadn't read any others in this universe, I was pleasantly surprised by the world she built. I enjoyed learning about their world and how the magic systems work. The characters were great, I loved that Iris was a bit older at 26 and not a 17-18 year old girl who then experienced so much. Oliver is wonderful and I always like getting chapters in the males point of view. I laughed so much at a certain scene in a hotel, have fun with that one I would love to read more, I can't wait to read the other series set in the same world 👌
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, not at all how I imagined it. I smiled when I saw Iris's name. I think by chapter 4 I was sold and I couldn't put it don't. What I wasn't sure about what how PEs was said, is it PEs or P Es? I love that Oliver has a stutter when he has to talk without using telepathy. I thought the characters names were well thought of, I really imagined little details and climbed in the book.

I'm a bit torn about this book, hence the 3 stars.
Liked: It was an easy and fast read. The whole powersystem and history of the PE and Priests were intruiging, though at the end it got a little bit confusing.
Disliked: It was too much insta-love/lust for me. The spicy scenes just felt a bit too random.
I don't mind spicy scenes, but in this case I think I would have liked the book more without them.

As an avid fantasy reader, I always enjoy it when I find something that is a bit different, but in a good way. This was such an easy read and it made me want to read more of Camille. Also, my gratitude goes to authors with more mature FMCs, a plus from the beginning.

Awesome book! Some spicy scenes in!!! The twist and turns and on the edge of my seat read! I couldn’t put it down! I was able to imagine being there with them as I read it. Would be cool to do some of the things in real life …. Or maybe we can!!! Must read , I do recommend this book!!
Great world building. I like the fact that the author uses a mature female lead character, the love interest has a speech impediment and that they can communicate telepathically.

Absolutely loved this book! The premise was interesting and something I haven't read before. And the main characters were intriguing and had me pulling towards them, like I wanted to root for them. Beautifully written, and the intimate scenes were fun, and not taken so seriously, which I loved
I love a good romance story and this book did not disappoint! It was interesting to see an empath get a romance, that is not something typically seen. Very well written!

Great story, well written, character building, plot twist and spice. If you’re looking for a forbidden enemy’s to lovers with magic and mystery look no further!
My first book from the author and even though it’s a standalone it has me adding more of her books to my TBR pile. A good read which I recommend, a good mix of plot and smut 😊
I really enjoyed this story of enemies to lovers, hidden identity and mystery in a fantasy world setting. My favorite part is the interaction and the developing relationship between Iris and Bear/Oliver as she has no idea that Bear and Oliver are the same person. There are some funny moments when Bear is milking that mistaken identity aspect. I also enjoyed the alpha side of Bear and the sensitive side of Oliver as not only did it help keep the identities separate but helped Iris learn more about herself in relation to her protective role with humans versus being destined to be like her “evil” parents. Although I have not read any of the previous books in the same world building, the overarching mystery of who the good guys and who the bad guys are was effectively solid. That surprised me as I can usually figure things out fairly early but I kept second guessing myself until the end.
This is a prequel to “The Soul Realm” series where there has been a war between the Empath Priests and the Peace Enforcers (who are high level telepaths). Historically, Empath Priests helped people with their problems via their Empathy and Telepathy but when rogue Priests were found to be experimenting and torturing people in the Human realm a war started between the Priests and the Peace Enforcers (PE). Now 10 years later, PEs are in power and are tasked with keeping the priests severely limited in their abilities in order to safeguard both the Human and the Soul realms. Iris, a novice Empath Priest, is the child of two notorious Priests who were reported to have committed an especially heinous crime to hundreds of humans and were thus apprehended and killed by PEs. Iris, who has had to bear the shame of her parents’ crimes, also has to hide that she has been trained in Telepathy by her parents, a skill which is punishable by death or blinding. Accused of stealing and trying to escape capture by the PEs, Iris runs into a mysterious PE captain. This PE Captain, who she calls Bear, keeps his face shadowed and Iris finds herself curiously attracted to him. Then, when Iris is forced to escape the Soul realm to the Human realm, Bear tracks her and keeps tabs on her while pretending to be a human man named Oliver. Oliver befriends Iris and offers to help her find more information into the death of her parents. This gives Oliver/Bear more time to figure out why he has the urge to protect Iris instead of arresting her.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 This is a standalone prequel to the Soul Realm series, which I have not read. This story line was different and pretty interesting but I felt like the chemistry between the main characters was lacking. Even in the spicy scenes, it just felt disconnected.
