I wanted an easy and entertaining audiobook and I got it with this book!

The characters were interesting, the romance and banter were great, and the action was intense!

There’s a strong faith moment that made it even better.

Highly recommend!

No language, only kissing, some torture with water(very mild).

What do you get when you read a Karen Witemeyer book? You get an unforgettable great read.
When an eccentric scientist,Darius meets hard headed and totally stubborn Nicole he just expects her to be a run of the mill secretary employee to him. They end up falling in love among chaos, danger and tender moments. This book was outstanding my only regret is I hadn't had a chance to read it sooner.
True love will prevail!

An interesting and enjoyable historical romance story. It jumped to the top of my to-read list when the author took time to give an intelligent and interesting answer to a question I'd asked last week; I grabbed it on impulse despite a tight weekly budget, and am not sorry.
Solid 4.5 stars. I doubt it's destined for a classic, but I really enjoyed it dearly! I will definitely read more of her books in the future. The history was very accurate (quite the treat after the errors in the last Christian historical I read!), which made it easy to feel like the book could actually have happened. The characters were engaging, and there were several twists to the plot that I sure didn't see coming.
The Christianity of the story is very subtile, less even than used to be in the secular books of a century ago, but tastefully and naturally included.
I liked how the hero was eccentric for a reason. Many authors just make a character antisocial and have some sort of peccadillo for the reason, but Darius's reason for secluding himself in the Texas countryside seems believable. A pet peeve of mine is characters that do things I don't expect them to do, and--while they do do unexpected things in the story--these characters always stayed true to themsleves. Often a difficult accomplishment for an author!
And I loved the young boy!

When I started this, I literally was "full steam ahead". I loved the characteristics of the book and how well things were progressing. The cover fit the book so well, and it just made me happy :)

But then, it fell flat after a 4th of the way through. Both the main leads seemed to focus on each other out of the blue...there was no progress to their abrupt falling in love feelings. Detailed kisses followed, several of which I skimmed . I couldn't understand either of the characters driving points, although if I were to pick, I would choose Darius because I liked his involvement with boilers. I didn't feel connected to the characters, and sadly I didn't care either way what happened to them. Plus, the dagger just seemed slightly trivial for me!

The spiritual content was sad too. We got to see a little bit of Nicole's spiritual thoughts and even less of Darius. I'm not sure if it ever was really clear he was saved or not...it kind of just got passed by after the one scene that held more conversation about trusting in the Lord.

So yeah, sadly this fell short for me! I know several people that love this book, but sadly I just didn't feel drawn into it.

Darius Thornton: Tongue tied. Socially inept. Heir of a major shipping operation. And haunted by a steamship explosion that has left him sleepless, exiled from his family, and obsessed with finding a way to improve the safety of steamboat travel. Or die blowing himself up in the process of boiler-related experimentation.

Nicole Renard: Finishing school dropout. Rattlesnake slayer. Carries a knife in her garter. Totally broke. Stranded. And in need of cash quickly. The only plausible job in this particular riverboat town happens to be as a secretary for a man who has a reputation of blowing things up.

Perfect.

Loved Darius. And I really enjoyed Nicole’s impact on Darius. The historical background—dealing with the safety issues of the early steamboat industry—was intriguing and helped the book stand out. Always fun to learn something while falling in love with the characters.

If you are looking for a light read, Full Steam Ahead is a good choice. While not as much comedy as I've experienced in other Karen Witemyer novels, it's a solid read.

I ended up really enjoying this one. I loved our main characters Nicole and Darius, they made the book for me. I liked them on their own, but together they were perfect. They had great chemistry and it was just fun to watch their love story unfold.

Nicole pushes herself to be the best. Being an only child and a woman has left her feeling insecure. She has done everything she can to try and earn her father's respect, but still feels she isn't quite good enough. When an opportunity arises for her to help secure her father's happiness and save their family business she jumps at the chance. Her plans go awry and she ends up seeking employment with a reclusive scientist, Darius Thornton.

Darius is fighting his own personal demons and has hidden himself away from family and friends and wants to stay focused on his work. When Nicole arrives on his doorstep he has no idea the changes his life is about to take.

I thought this was a fun story. Both characters are very strong-willed and intelligent. I liked that they didn't fall victim to the usual misunderstandings that sometimes happen in these type stories. They actually use their intelligence, which was refreshing. I thought Nicole was a bit intimidating, she could do everything and was so smart. Like I mentioned before, they have great chemistry, which really made the book for me. While the historical elements (history of steamship boilers) is interesting and worked into the story well, its really the romance and relationships that I enjoy reading about. I will say the historical elements were well written and I never felt like I was reading a boring text book, the details came to life and felt applicable to the story.

Anyway, another great book by Ms. Witemeyer. I love her writing, characters and fun settings. I would highly recommend this one.

{About the Book}

When Nicole Renard returns home to Galveston from an eastern finishing school, she's stunned to find her father in ill health. Though she loves him, he's only ever focused on what she's "not." Not male. Not married. Not able to run their family business, Renard Shipping.

Vowing to secure a suitable marriage partner, Nicole sets out with the Renard family's greatest treasure: a dagger personally gifted to Nicole's father by the pirate Jean Lafitte. Many believe the legend that the dagger is the source of all Renard Shipping's good fortune, though Nicole is sure her father's work ethic and honorable business practices are the keys to their success. Before she can board the steamer to New Orleans, Nicole finds her father's rivals—the Jenkins brothers—on either side of the gangplank, ready to grab her and steal the dagger. Quickly, she decides to instead travel north, to Liberty, Texas, where she can decide what to do next.

Darius Thornton needs a secretary—someone to help him get his notes in order. Ever since the boiler explosion aboard the "Louisiana," Darius has been a man obsessed. He will do anything to stop even one more steamship disaster. The pretty young socialite who applies for the job baffles him with her knowledge of mathematics and steamships. He decides to take a risk and hire her, but he's determined her attractive face and fancy clothes won't distract him from his important research.

The job offer comes at exactly the right time for Nicole. With what Darius is paying her, she'll be able to afford passage to New Orleans in mere weeks. But Mr. Thornton is so reclusive, so distant, so unusual. He can create complex scientific equations but can't remember to comb his hair. And his experiments are growing more and more dangerous. Still, there are undeniable sparks of attraction between them. But Nicole is leaving soon, and if she marries, it must be to a man who can manage a shipping empire. Darius certainly doesn't fit that description. And the Jenkins brothers have not given up on kidnapping Nicole and seizing the Lafitte dagger for themselves.

{My Review}

Karen Witemeyer became a new favorite author for me when I first read Stealing the Preacher and Karen has done it again!!! This book is utter perfection. You get a history lesson on steam ships and boilers. Steam boilers explode, so watch out. Nicole is a knife-wielding pirate's daughter, well sort of, and Darius is the handsome and eccentric scientist. Not long after working together they both discover romantic feelings toward each other.

I thought the pacing of Full Steam Ahead was great, even the pacing of the romance was great. I've seen in other reviews of people complaining the romance was too fast. However, you must take into consideration the time period. Back in those days couples didn't "date" like we do today. Romance was much more fast-paced, they didn't wait years to get married. Most likely they would get married months or a year into the relationship. Another complaint was they decided each other was the "one" after their first kiss. I, myself find that very believable. I know of many couples who married after love at first sight or first kiss and they have been happily married for many years. I envy living in these time periods where people still believed in love at first sight or first kiss. I truly believe these things can happen and I hope it happens to me.

End of rant. lol I found Full Steam Ahead to be the perfect historical romance read and I will recommend it to everybody who is a historical fan.

Full Steam Ahead was such a good read! I've read several of Karen Witemeyer's books and while this one wasn't as funny as some of the others, it was a great story. I loved how Nicole went into hiding while trying to earn enough money to travel to her original destination. That added some suspense because you didn't want the "bad guys" to find her.

I also loved the characters and romance. It was so sweet! I hope these characters are in future books/stories as I can't wait to see what happens next in their lives.

All in all, a sweet, fun read and one I recommend if you enjoy historical romances. It was very entertaining and I can't believe it took me this long to read!

How can she acquire an heir for her father when her heart belongs to another? And when her father's rivals discover her hiding place, will she have to choose between that love and her family's legacy?

REVIEW: Having read several Karen Witemeyer books, I expected this to have a strong, feisty heroine, an interesting story line and include some good humor; and Full Steam Ahead fulfilled each of these elements. Nicole is a combination of tomboy, pirate, and lady all rolled in to one bundle of energy. I loved the hero of the story as intelligent but shy Darius is the soft hearted but strong man all women dream about. The Christian theme of forgiveness and second chances threaded its way softly but strongly throughout the plot. Witemeyer has definitely done it again.

FAVORITE QUOTES: "What happened was an accident. A horrible, tragic accident. But accidents happen in this fallen world we live. Innocence is no guarantee of protection. Rain falls on both the just and the unjust."

"You can't redeem your failures. None of us can. Only the Redeemer has that power, and he's already wielding it on your behalf. He's bring good out of that tragedy, good that we are only beginning to see."

This story again confirmed what I love about Karen Witemeyer. An interesting historical story, with a cute romance, a broody hero and a feisty heroine and the added bonus, some suspense!

Darius and Nicole complimented each other really well. I liked how their romance build to a boiling point and the lessons these characters learned - Darius about letting go what you can't control, and Nicole, what is really important in life vs wanting to prove herself. The supporting characters was also a great addition to a very enjoyable story.

I also enjoyed the adventure feel to the story with the dagger and baddies after it. The author did a great job of building on the suspense and action, to get me so invested I did not want to stop reading, or listen.

Age Appropriate For: 16 and up for romance
Best for Ages: 18 and up

I keep expecting Witemeyer to come out with a book that I think is just okay, not amazing. Yet every time, she manages to wow me with yet another awesome story. Full Steam Ahead impressed me on so many levels: the history, the setting, the characters, and, the thing that defines every Witemeyer book and sets her above so many authors, the strong faith element.
Full Steam Ahead was a bit more… well steamy than some of Witemeyer’s other books. There were several kissing scenes in this book and, often, a book with as much kissing as this one would have gotten a star knocked off for my personal tastes, but this one maintained five stars.

I liked Nicole form the first moment I started reading about her. She is so smart and sassy, yet I was surprised that she also maintained her femininity, proving Witemeyer’s skill and ability to break the molds. Nicole was an endearing character, and I hope that Witemeyer writes a prequel about her someday.

Darius was such a heart-breaking character. His pain felt so real and his quest so understandable. He was a perfect match for Nicole. Most authors miss the mark when it comes to obsessed/broken characters. However, Darius was very life-like and lovable.
About half-way through the book, I thought that this was going to be the first Karen Witemeyer book without a strong faith element, and I was disappointed. However, just a short chapter or so later, the message hit and it hit hard. I was near tears! How she wove the threads into the story without me realizing it, I don’t know, but it was awesome.

I highly recommend this book to older girls who love historical romance, strong faith, and endearing characters.

I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review. I was under no obligation to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are entirely my own.

What I Loved

Once again, Witemeyer doesn't disappoint with her latest hilarious, well-researched, and unique Christian fiction release.

With the customary wit that landed her on my list of favorite authors when I first read Head in the Clouds, she more than pleased this reader with Full Steam Ahead. The hero is haunted by a tragedy in his past; the heroine is determined to secure her future. Both think they have things well in hand, the situation under control, until their blossoming love throws them both for a loop.

This book is funny, true to the times, romantic, and has just enough spiritual depth and lesson-learning thrown in that I love it for its subtlety. Nicole is the type of intelligent, spunky miss perfect for pulling scientist Darius out of his obsession; and he is just the type of determined man to rescue her from the threat against her life and her family's legacy.
Why I Recommend This Book

I was expecting a different ending. But I didn't mind at all that Full Steam Ahead ends with a surprising resolution I didn't see coming. If you like real-life romances with a touch of damsel-in-distress, you're going to love this latest release from the talented Karen Witemeyer.

I'd say 3.5 stars because I'm struggling to understand Nicole and her family...lol...

This was a sweet story, and I enjoyed it! For the most part...lol...

Characters:
Nicole was a headstrong female MC...and though I enjoyed her, I didn't relate a whole lot or get where she was coming from. But that might just be me...lol...probably is.
Darius was my favorite! His past, his growth! He is such a good man even if he seems gruff at first!
Jake, Mr. Wellborn and Mrs. Wellborn! All such good characters!
The Jenkins brothers were downright horrible!

Themes:
Knowing our worth is found in God and not things, that we can't hold onto the past and try to atone for things that were not our fault...it doesn't work like that. It was a very pretty theme!

Language:
N/A

Romance:
Some kisses...some touching...it was pretty mild. Mrs. Witemeyer usually keeps it clean (at least in all her books I've read).

Overall:
There were some spots that I didn't quite get...like...*proceed at own risk spoilers ahead*

The Jenkins brothers break into Nicole's house and tell her father to hand over this old, important dagger or they are going to break his wife's fingers...to which he's like hesitant...you know, old knife, wife, old knife, wife...hard choice. No! My dad would have been throwing that dagger at them ASAP.
And it sounds like at the end that Nicole's dad is like, "You are worth more than any dagger." But apparently her mom isn't??????
Someone help me understand!? Lol...anyway, that was my biggest issue...oh wait, no, I remember something else.
Nicole is so focused on the dagger and keeping it safe that she runs off as a distraction, Jenkins brothers trailing her, and wants Darius to take the dagger to her father. Darius has PTSD! Like nightmares from his failure to save a girl he didn't even know! Nicole, you're scaring the poor guy further! Why! She knew about his past trauma and his guilt over that and she left him with danger on her tail and knowing those guys weren't afraid to hurt her! She definitely wasn't thinking about Darius in that moment...I digress.
Anyway, minus my aggravation with Nicole and her family, this was a nice book. I greatly enjoyed Darius's POVs!

Okay, my friends will probably look at my 4 star rating and go, “Whaaaa?” Yes, just like the minion in Despicable Me. ;) But let me explain, and don’t let the fact that I didn’t give it 5 stars fool you. Full Steam Ahead is a wonderful book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I mean, it’s Karen Witemeyer. How could it not be great? You’ve heard me say how much I sometimes envy her writing talent, and this book is no exception. It was a little different in that it didn’t have the typical Western feel of her others, which most of the time centered around ranches. Maybe I missed that a little, but this storyline was still fascinating.

I very much enjoyed the characters, although I’m not sure I loved Nicole and Darius, which is why I gave it 4 stars. One thing I’ve learned about myself is that if I don’t love the guy, there’s a good chance I won’t love the book. I don’t know why it’s the guy who matters most to me, but that’s just how it is. Darius took me a bit to warm up to, and even though I really liked him by the end, I didn’t absolutely adore him like I did Crockett, Levi, and Neill in the other books. But that’s just my personal taste, so don’t judge the book on that. Nicole and Darius were a great, as well as amusing, pair to read about and watch fall in love.

The thing is, Karen Witemeyer is so great at writing that even if I don’t personally connect with some of the characters, I still love reading the story. She’s truly a master at writing historical romance. All of her settings and characters are so vivid, and the romance is always a delight. I highly recommend this book as well as any of her previous ones.

I received this book free from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.

I'm a massive fan of Karen Witemeyer but I missed out on reading this book when it was published last summer as I was a little bit busy having a baby. I've actually had a copy of Full Steam Ahead sitting on my shelf for a while, but I kept putting off reading it as the cover didn't really appeal to me. As other reviewers have commented, it looks a bit silly, especially with the heroine's expression. And I'm not going to lie, steam ships aren't my area of interest. But I'm glad that I pushed past these factors and read the book as it reminded me of why I love Karen's writing so much! This novel has a feisty, stubborn heroine who doesn't let traditional gender roles hold her back (although not in a way that's unrealistic for the time period); a beta hero who is passionate yet gentle, but has a turbulent past to overcome; quirky but lovable secondary characters; interesting historical details that don't feel info dumped; and plenty of action! I did get annoyed at Nicole at times for being too focused on saving her family's heirloom, even when it endangered her life, but I was also glad that she had that weakness that prevented her from being too perfect a heroine. Ultimately, I loved this book and think it's probably one of my favourite reads of 2015. I need to go look up her most recent release now.

Karen is an author who's books I know won't disappoint. They are usually set in Texas in the 1800s and are so creative and fun I savor them as a treat. Full Steam Ahead did not disappoint.

This story is a frolic through the race to improve steam engines and end the explosions that led to terrible disasters in the mid-1800s. Funny that two of the last books I've read dealt with scientific advancements. I loved learning a bit about steam engines...but I adored the hero and heroine. The hero has an edge of the beast to him -- a self-imposed recluse who is misunderstood because of his all-consuming drive to fix a horrible problem. And the heroine is a woman who can match mind and wits with him. There is also a thin thread of suspense that doesn't overshadow the story but adds a layer to it.

Karen Witemeyer has penned another clever romance, once again thinking outside the box to create unique heroes and feisty heroines with interesting strengths.

I found myself smiling throughout the story and rooting for these two to find the love they deserved--with each other. I can always expect a satisfying end, but Witemeyer does a wonderful job keeping the romantic tension palpable and me on the edge of my seat.

The spiritual thread laced throughout the book was moving and one I could identify with. Eventually, we gotta let things go and move forward.

If you enjoy fiction set around real events, quirky characters who steal your heart and make you laugh then cry and laugh again, dreamy yet far from fluffy romance, and faith weaved through the pages, then this book needs to go to the top of your reading list.

Confession: I've read EVERY single one of Karen's book.

And goodness, I've loved them ALL! Full Steam Ahead is no different!

Karen is known for her historical humorous romances, and I think that's why I love them so much. I will say, this one started off a bit less "funny" than her others, but that wasn't a bad thing. Just different, and created a pretty cool depth to the story.

Yup, this is definitely a must-read!

This was my first Karen Witemeyer read and I really enjoyed it. Two friends had told me how much they loved her novels and recommended them. And I agree, as this was a really good read!

Darius's and Nicole's story was so fun to read! I loved both their characters, as well as the household staff. Nicole is a mixture of feminine, smart, couragous, loyal and determined almost to a fault, kind, has a good faith in God, and really loves her family.

Darius has a broken heart due to things beyond his control. That pain is all he can think about. He is determined to make a difference. He's equally as determined as Nicole, but for different purposes. As he starts to see things are out of balance and why, his true personality comes out.

With danger constantly on Nicole's heels, and finally threatening all they have, perspectives change. And what is really important is able to come into focus and love, acceptance, and peace finally is found. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading another Karen Witemeyer novel!

I've had this book on my shelf for quite a while and am glad to have finally read it! I really enjoy this author's books and this is one of only a couple of novels that I had not yet read.

The characters were quirky, yet believable. Their chemistry was good together and developed over time as they worked on testing boilers for steam engines.

This story had a bit of everything: danger, romance, and humor, yet it also had serious topics woven throughout it. Darius struggled with survivor's guilt and Nicole carried the burden of feeling as if she was not enough for her father, since she wasn't a son. Definitely an enjoyable tale.

I've been a huge fan of Karen Witemeyer for over two years now, I've devoured(And loved!) all of her books! This was yet another fun, cute read with a great depth to it and a wonderful faith message! The storyline was so unique, I loved it! I also loved the action, suspense and mystery aspects of the story! Nicole was awesome, I will always relate to a spunky heroine who can take care of herself and hold her own against the men, Nicole was absolutely such a character! And Darius oh my goodness such a great hero, I loved him. In one scene his anguish and guilt over something he had no control over was written so beautifully that it made my heart break for him and nearly brought me to tears! This story also had a wonderfully delightful cast of supporting characters, I really liked them all. Especially Mrs. Wellborn, which isn't surprising because she kept reminding me of Mrs. Potts, one of my favorite characters in the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast, if you read this book you'll know what I mean!

I know it wouldn't have been practical to the story but I would have loved to have 'met' Darius' parents, brother and sister in this book! There were also a couple of things that I would have liked a little more closure about, but I loved this book so much that I am giving it five stars all the way!

I don't want to risk giving anything away so I will just say that I absolutely loved this book, it's another Witemeyer book for my keeper shelf! And I can't wait to see what else Karen Witemeyer has in store for us, whatever it is I know I will love it!

I highly recommend that you sail Full Steam Ahead to your nearest bookstore or online retailer and claim your very own copy of this wonderful adventure! You won't be sorry!

Every book I've read by Karen Witemeyer I have enjoyed, but this book was one I just didn't have a desire to read. I think it was mostly because of the cover, it's just looks silly/weird to me, and the reason I think that is the woman's expression. Change that and it probably would look a whole lot better.

Anyway, to the story. While this wasn't a put I couldn't put down, I thought the story as a whole was very good. I also loved all the information of steam engines and loved watching Darius work on trying to make them safer. The first meeting between Nicole and Darius was so cute and fun!

The story takes place mostly in the span of two weeks, so because of that the romance felt a tad rushed and at times felt almost more lustful than love. The big problem that came up towards the middle/end of the story could've been resolved very quickly had they known more about each other, which would've happened easily by talking more and kissing less. I'm no authority on the time period, but from the little I do know it doesn't seem likely that she's be able to live at his house, be a love interest (even with Mr. and Mrs. Wellborn living there), and not have it tarnish her reputation.

Still, this was a book that I really enjoyed and think you should read it if the description sounds interesting to you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done.
