Worth Waiting For

Rate this book
When Colby earned a swimming scholarship to the Falconer Institute of Training, he expected to spend all his time either training or studying, but that was before he looked out of his living room window and straight into the dance studio opposite.

It’s taken Noah years, but he’s finally got his life in order. He teaches dance classes all day, hits the clubs every night and he’s not looking for complications—especially not in the form of overly-innocent swimmers who like to spy on him from across the street.

The first time Colby approaches him, Noah has no trouble turning him away. It’s only when Colby returns years later, to collect on a casually delivered promise, that Noah finds himself incapable of keeping Colby locked out of his carefully re-constructed life.

Their kinks may match up perfectly, but their lives and their pasts couldn’t be more different. Years have passed, but will what they have together turn out to be worth waiting for?

Author note: This story contains ***strictly non-sexual*** flashbacks to when one character was under 18.

I description Kim Dare. There. I said it. She writes the best feel-good BDSM; it's like wrapping up in a fluffy, fleecey blanket. She also has a penchant for writing tooth achingly sweet submissive characters that make me want to hug and shield them from all the riff raff of the world.

As you may have guessed, I have a weakness for sweet submissives and/or slaves which explains my weakness for slavefic, and Kim Dare delivers again with Colby. Colby, Colby, Colby... *sigh* He doesn't surpass Ori of Duck! fame, but he's carved out a special place all his own. Want to know what did it? Don't answer that. I'm going to tell you anyway.

Colby was 15 years old he fell in love with the beautiful dancer from the studio/apartment across the street. Now, I know some of you are skeptical of the notion that a 15 year old could really fall in love, but Kim Dare can make you believe it. Anyway, one night he impetuously decides to follow the dancer and wends up at a nightclub. Good thing he swiped his 19 year old brother's wallet on the way out. He introduces himself to Noah who immediately makes him as underage and walks him home, telling him in jest to look him up once he's of age. Want to know what Colby does once he gets home? He doesn't mope or cry or get pissed even when his brother, Tony, suggests he forget him and move on. No, Colby asks Tony, "do you think he'll be okay?" If that's not a sucker punch of the D'awwwww variety straight to the heart, I'm at a loss for what is.

Colby despite being inexperienced and 5 years younger is in many ways much more mature, logical and level headed than Noah. He's also infinitely patient. 3 years! 3! He bides his time, watching out for Noah, in a manner of speaking. Sure, some may call it stalking or spying and they have a point. There is a certain obsessive quality about Colby's devotion to Noah, a guy he's met once, but I think there has to be a "creeper" quality about someone and some sort of sinister or delusional intent to constitute stalking. Colby's version has a protective quality about it which isn't completely unfounded given Noah's circle of friends. He's so easy going and laid back that he's never even felt the backlash of discrimination and he's out to everyone he knows. He's a straight "A" student, a competitive swimmer who's adored by his coach and teammates, his brother even calls him a "Stepford child"; in short, he's pretty much perfect and nothing like Noah. His counterpoint.

Noah has traveled a harder road. He's been shunned by his family because of his sexuality, had to scrap and scrimp to get by, even go-go dancing and he's had his fair share of asshat boyfriends or hook ups. He struggles some with self-esteem issues which is completely understandable in someone with his history. He's adamant that he's not looking for anything serious, but he cannot deny his attraction to Colby. They enter into an "arrangement" of just sex which Noah assumes will last a short amount of time, until Colby gets bored. Oh Noah... silly wabbit. Colby waited 3 years for you! He's not going anywhere. The next thing you know it's 6 months later and they're still "not dating". Uh huh. Sure. Ok.

The conflict was a bit predictable, I'll admit, but the upside is it didn't last long. The characterization was lovely. I enjoyed the story arc. I could've done with maybe an epilogue, but since this is #1 of a series I'm assuming we'll catch up with Noah and Colby again at some point. The BDSM is of the light variety with some bondage and spanking. Colby does make a beautiful submissive. So obedient, probably more trusting than he should be, then again he has studied Noah for 3 years so maybe not. Is it realistic? Probably not. Does it make me hopeful that people like Colby and Ori actually exist in this world? You bet your ass it does. Above all, it makes me appreciate Kim Dare for the kindred spirit that she is. Thanks, Kim.

If you like kink with an HEA and a little sappiness, you'll enjoy Worth Waiting For.

I would like to thank Ms. Dare for providing me with a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I couldn’t get into this one. I didn’t care for the characters and really didn’t care what happened to them. Perhaps this was due to the slow pace of the story or the slower pace of the narrator in the audiobook.

Did you hear me squee? Even from across the other side of the world?

Kim Dare is my comfort read. The only auto-buy author I have. I make no apologies for that. Heck, we all have them. I love her short "Meet and Get Together kinky books" She does those brilliantly.

I also liked "Duck" and "Magpie" but they were paranormal and I much prefer contemporary.

I've often finished reading her books and wished there was more story. Some conflict to test whether the relationship is really going to go the distance.

The good thing is that this time there is room enough to explore the mornings after! 46,000 words and a super sweet yet still satisfying story.

The blurb gives you enough of the plot to determine if you want to read it, so I won't say more, but I did find it different from other books she's written. More complete. More comfortable in its own skin. Hard to describe exactly.

But if this is what she can do self-pubbing, then bring it on.

Classic Kim Dare. Not as original as some of her other stuff, but a really good study of the characters. Super sweet subby guy falls for slightly older, jaded guy. The sex was really mild, so if you need a BDSM light book, this one's for you.

While this is an excellent D/s story, with Colby and Noah slowly learning each of their roles, it is also so much more as it shows how each of these men defines love as well as how they see relationships. I loved the slow, almost unnoticeable, transformation the somewhat rough around the edges Noah goes through, all caused by Colby's unerring belief that they belong together. It wasn't what I expected, but I think it was very romantic (totally between the lines) and rather sweet.

Colby is something else. He is fifteen when he first notices Noah, a dancer who owns the studio across the street from where he lives. He is determined to make the man notice him, only to be told he is too young once he does. But Colby's determination knows no bounds, he is patient, and so he goes to collect on Noah's promise to talk to him, so to speak, when he's legal. Colby loves what they do together even more than he imagined, and his quiet determination and belief in Noah is his strongest ally in the fight for more than a simple arrangement as f*ck buddies. I loved him as he never gives up and, in many ways, shows that he is much more mature than Noah.

Noah has had a tough life. Rejected by his family because he is gay, forced to work in questionable clubs and used by the man he works for, he has barely managed to finally get his own life in order when young and naïve Colby turns up and seems to expect way more from him than he is willing to give. He is not interested in a relationship, but somehow it seems he cannot avoid it. It takes a final confrontation with who he was versus who he is now for him to realize what is really important.

Colby is such a natural sub that Noah's inner Dom cannot help but respond to him. At first he believes this is limited to the physical side of what they do, but interestingly enough, it proves the key to their emotional state as well as how they end up solving their issues. The way Colby uses pleas and requests rather than demands is not only very sexy, it also makes Noah realize a few truths about himself. Totally fascinating!

If you like stories about relationships that start out as physical before they grow into more, if you enjoy reading about BDSM and its underlying psychology, and if you're looking for a read that is as hot and exciting as it is sweet, then you will probably like this novella as much as I did.

Satisfyingly sweet.

Damn that made me smile...like big, goofy grin. I don't often admit to those, but, yeah...

Colby is the kind of guy that is perfect, but often when we meet this guy we totally don't get how awesome or rare a commodity he is. Straight forward, honest, good-natured, and deliciously unreserved in carnal matters. Never ashamed, but accepting of both others and himself. In essence--a gem.

Noah, independent and having spent way too much time on his own with people who don't really speak to each other for so long--well, he's forgotten or never known true care.

Slightly different flavor to this Dare novel. Still lovingly devoted kink, but with an extra dollop of sugary cream. I like the club scene or pro-Dom departure here. Throughly entertaining and leaves you feeling happy.

I can’t force you to face the fact you deserve to be loved—not if you hate yourself this much!

This wasn't a typical Kim Dare story, yet I wasn't disappointed. Well, maybe a bit, because I adore her other stories, but this was so sweet, and so hot, it made up for the difference.

Kim Dare is a master at creating sexual tension. Sometimes I catch myself holding my breath, almost like my whole body is focused on the scene. Those scenes are five stars. With glitter. Colby and Noah were great characters, and so flippin' hot together. That said, I did have some disconnect going on, a little cognitive dissonance or something, when it came to their D/s relationship.

In the author's other books, I easily understood the D/s dynamic in the relationships. It wasn't so clearcut in this book. The way Colby was so self-assured and determined, planning his strategy with Noah, taking charge of their first date, I thought he would be the more dominant partner. When he ended up in a more submissive role, it was a little jarring for me because there wasn't a hint of a submissive nature in him before their first date. For example, there were no submissive fantasies while he was watching Noah; instead, Colby was all about taking care of Noah. Even with their first kiss, Colby was protecting him with his hand behind Noah's head. The masochistic bent kind of threw me, too. It was hot, but didn't fit with my perception of Colby and seemed to come out of nowhere. It didn't help that we were told his physical reaction to it, but no thoughts on how he felt about it.

Not only did I not get a submissive vibe from Colby, but I didn't get a dominant one from Noah, either. In fact, during their first dance, when he told Colby he liked having his hair stroked when he went down on someone, I got the opposite impression. The vulnerability Noah showed during their first sex scene seemed to confirm it.

I struggled with that a lot, and would have been much happier if their dominant and submissive sides were clear before they hooked up.

There was one other thing that bothered me. I don't like time jumps when couples are just starting to get together. Two sex scenes, then bam... it's three months later. Its frustrating. A lot can happen in those first three months as they get to know each other. I want to see it. To have that happen twice was a letdown. To go from "We won't be dating... This isn't going anywhere. Its just sex." to "You belong to me, body and soul. You're mine." without seeing the relationship develop on page was disappointing.

Overall, what we got was amazing, but there was too much missing or off page so that took off a star for me.

Side notes:
While I understand a sub can be protective of his Dom and a Dom can be vulnerable, when those are the only hints I get, it causes impressions that suggest opposite natures than what we are told.

We really need a video clip of someone acting out that lap dance.

Colby wanted Noah and for three years he waited for him.

Noah, beautiful dancer, beautiful loner, had told him, ‘come back when you’re eighteen’ . So Colby obeyed, waited and watched Noah from afar. He’ll do whatever it takes.

Colby may seem a little obsessive when it comes to his sexy neighbor across the way, but he wants Noah the minute he sets eyes on him. He bides his time, all those years (a life-time when you’re fifteen!!), living with his older brother, Tony, and dedicated to his swim training at FIT (Falcon Institute of Training), an athletic facility.

So determined.

The day he turns eighteen, Colby returns to Noah, his yearning for him still strong. But this time he’s older, bigger, a little wiser. He’s been watching the dancer and he believes in him, trusts him. He’ll do anything to get and keep Noah… even playing into Noah’s need for control and dominance. Colby is sucked willingly into the sexy power play that uncovers hidden kinks. And, all along, he quietly peers into Noah’s heart, trying to suss him out, then hands his heart over, no strings attached. It leaves me breathless to witness it.

So delicious.

Noah is a harder sell, a complicated guy. Cynical and hardened by a rougher younger life, he’s a player. He had sold himself cheaply to an abusive, older ex-lover, Sam, who had no scruples about taking an under-aged lover, forcing him into a kind of cowed submission. Older now, Noah has left Sam but still seems caught in his thrall. He wants to get out from under it if he only knew how.

When Colby returns, those years later, hot to cash in on the ‘come back later’, Noah gives into his own version of a no-strings attached fuck buddy arrangement with lots of steamy erotic bondage sprinkled on top.

Who is Noah, really? This is, for me, the weakest part of the story, trying to work this out. True, he didn’t take advantage of Colby’s under-age infatuation at the beginning, so he’s a good guy, he has principals. But when they finally have sex, the very first time, he ties Colby up. It’s early in the relationship for this, and Noah knows that Colby is a virgin; he knows that Colby, inexperienced and trusting, will do anything for him. Is Noah trustworthy?

It’s the inevitable, climactic break-up scene that gives insight into what’s really going on with Noah. And Colby, sweet heart, figures it out, recognizes the anger for fear, and opens Noah’s eyes and heart to other possibilities.

So worth waiting for.

I love the duality in the two guys. Colby’s sweet yearning over quiet strength and Noah’s accepting his own softness beneath the tough exterior… I love how the guys shift between these different colorings.

I remember Dare’s Duck! (a paranormal fantasy) for its moments of charged erotic intimacy. I think this author does this very well. For me, it’s those moments in the story that really shine. It’s not just about finding pleasure but fulfilling need through darker kink. I think it’s a harder sell in the contemporary genre, though here, it’s very well done.

There is a satisfactory resolution (though the ending seems a bit scattered, I think, in setting up for the sequel), but of course I want more of these guys. Luckily, this is the start of a series featuring the FIT athletes and, hopefully, Colby’s bi-curious brother, Tony, who also piqued my curiosity.

I think Kim Dare's first name should start with a C for "Crack" as I think that's my level of addiction to her books. Usually not too complicated in plot or character they are just fun to read. I really enjoyed how dedicated Colby was and I did not feel it actually that strange that he was so obsessed with Noah. I felt it matched his personality - a guy who knows what he wants and goes for it. Any sort of professional athlete (which is basically what he was) would demonstrate this type of perseverance. I also enjoyed how things felt more organic in development and that the guys had mostly natural reactions. I do think Colby was far more understanding than most guys would be - but it certainly wasn't enough to knock off many stars. This one felt like a more coherent and expansive story than others and I felt like I knew the characters better - I recommend it!

I put off reading this for ages, because of the series being set around the Falconer Institute of Training. I assumed it was a series about athletes, who are way down on my list of enjoyable characters. I was dead wrong. While technically Colby and Noah might both be athletes, this is actually a familiar Kim Dare sugarkink story. Which is a good thing.

When I say that it's familiar, there is a subtly different flavor here. It's not just the G-A-Y/Rawlings Men series rebooted.

For a more informative review, may I point you towards the extensive one by Optimist-King's Wench, which covers it all, really.

3.5 rounded up in gratitude for the sheer number of times I re-read Gay Divorcee/Gay Friendly/the whole I Blame Bret series.

Sizzling! Colby was the perfect boyfriend, almost too good to be true. I'm still not convinced Noah deserved him. I didn't like Noah, even after I learned more about his background. He was prickly, always pushing Colby away. And I'm not sure I believed Colby would fall in love with Noah to the exclusion of every other man just from watching him dance, even as a parade of guys went through the revolving door. It was self-inflicted torture.

Once the guys got together, the heat index sky-rocketed. Colby was 18 and a virgin, but Noah rocked his world. There's a light D/s theme involving spanking and bondage. The smexy parts were hot, and we definitely get to see what makes the MCs tick. I liked the secondary characters, including Colby's brother Tony and Colby's swimming mates.

The ending was well done, not a HEA exactly, but a move in that direction for sure.

This is a sweet new series from talented Ms. Dare. I love Ms. Dare stories because the romance in them make me feel so good. If I am a bit down, I can depend upon Ms. Dare's books to bring up me.

Ms. Dare's super power is writing characters with chemistry. In this one, the chemistry is off the charts. Colby and Noah are an unlikely pair. Their experiences in life are completely opposite. For Colby, being gay is no different than being straight. It's irrelevant because he is more than just a poster boy for an athletic gay guy. For Noah, being gay only brings him heartache and pain.

Colby is the eternal optimist. He sees the best in people. He's the guy who helps his friends all be a better person. I can't help but admire Colby and wish I was as good a person as he. I feel more like Noah, jaded, pessimistic and snarky. These two characters are so well designed, they are easily remembered.

The heart of this story is about love conquers all. Love also heals those who have been hurt. Colby's faith, loyalty, devotion and perseverance is unbelievable. His maturity is incredible. One could say, he is completely fictional and yet I've met a person like this in real life. And it is perhaps why I love Colby so much. He reminds me of a friend whose maturity and understanding just surpasses my ability to mimic or understand. If there were more Colby type people in the world, the world would be a better place. This romance is highly recommended to those who like characters that inspire for each of us to be a little kinder and more understanding.

*This book was given as a gift by the author. A review was not requested but shyly suggested. I finally wrote it, six months late. My lateness did not influence my rating as I rated it as soon as I finished the book.

I really liked this book! I've read lots of Kim Dare's books, but the last few have been very short and a bit fluffy. This one had some great characters, with real depth, and a great story.

Colby is young, very young when they first meet (15 I think), he sees Noah across the street and falls in lust. Follows him to a club, Noah turns him down and tells him to come find him when he's 18. Then follows three years of slightly creepy teenage stalking....

The day Colby turns 18, he's out stalking Noah in person. Finds him, they sort of start to date, more like f*** buddies, and we are all happy.

Then follows, six months of hot, slightly kinky sex, a bit of drama, we learn more about Noah and his serious trust issues, and a HEA. Totally believable and enjoyable!

Great characters, I loved Colby for his innocence, and Noah was stubbornly annoying. Or annoyingly stubborn! The sex was hot, and just kinky enough, with a younger character, enough to be hot but not icky.

I always like Kim's books, but this one was one of the best I've read of her's in a while! Yeah!

Enjoyable but hardly realistic.

I did like this, for the most part. Colby was kind of a weird stalker but really sweet and really focused. Somehow, just from watching Noah dance and repeatedly screw random men, he decided he was the one. So that was highly improbable. He did seem to live in a magically blessed world where he only experienced acceptance from friends and family. There was no other background to indicate any life experience for him. He seemed to intrinsically understand the way Noah felt about himself. It's fiction, so I can accept it, I just wish there was some insight into how Colby was supposed to have formed his personality. There was only a little more background for Noah. My other issue was the sex scenes. It's kind of hard to accept that Colby would enjoy bondage when losing his virginity. I've also noticed with this author, that sex scenes always seem to feel rather detached. There's descriptions of the actions but I never feel the heat. I'd have liked to enjoy it more.

Colby has been watching Noah since he was 15, literally, through a telescope from the flat he shares with his brother, whilst Noah teaches, and dances, in the studio opposite. Colby first approaches Noah when underage, and is turned down flat, but told to come back when he turns 18. Much to Noah’s surprise Colby does exactly that – but Colby doesn’t do relationships, but Noah really won’t take no for an answer. The pair develop a D/s style relationship with Noah firmly in charge – but much of it seems to mask Noah’s own troubled past, not least his rocky relationship with his former boss, Sam. I liked parts of this, but parts I wasn’t so happy with. Noah’s actions at the start felt distinctly stalkerish and I wasn’t that taken with break up/get back together at the end. I did like Colby’s older brother though – and hope he gets his archer at some point……

A lot of Kim Dare's works are fun, PWP erotica stories that are a pleasure to read. This is one of the full-length stories that are not only fun, erotic and hot but comes with an entertaining story as well.

I really loved how non-creepy Colby's stalking came across. Under normal circumstances, I'd be telling Noah to go get a restraining order or something. But Colby's sweet devotion just pulled it off without even a twinge of concern on my part.

While I like how we got glimpses of Colby and Noah's relationship progress, the ending felt a wee bit rushed somehow.

A very satisfying read.

This is one of my favorite Kim Dare books to date. It felt like an entire story instead of just a little snippet of one. We got to know these guys and they just worked together even though it didn't seem like they should. A jaded 20ish guy and an innocent jock boy who watched him dance for years before he finally turned 18 and could do something about it. Very sweet and kinky and sexy! Now I wait for #2. Who will it be about?? A teammate? His brother? I'm really looking forward to it.

Sorry I'm not much into the reviewing mood right now. Really like the book, 3.5 stars ( sorry I round down), definitely better than a 3 but not quite a 4 for me. Colby was very sweet, almost too sweet. Noah, too hardcore for what I'd think a dancer would be. Overall, a good read..

Noah is a firecracker of a dancer, a professional dance teacher with a past that broke his young heart and made him lose trust with people and affected the way he viewed himself. (The story downs't go deep enough into the past experiences of the characters which robbed one star from my rating) Colby is pure innocence and lovely submission wrapped in a hunky swimmer's body. He sets his eyes on Noah when he is fifteen and keeps him dear in his heart till he is allowed to collect the promise Noah made to him while he was still underage.

The start was cute and altough a little stalkerish, I could really relate to the young crush Colby lived through - the agony and the worry of it too. But he must be the most laid back character ever to sit back and turn his eyes away from the view of Noah bringing his one night stands home.

I think Noah's dominant behavior and Colby's innocent submission worked so well. The story skipped months of their early non-relationship and I felt a little bit robbed there :P. And I wanted to know more about the dynamics of Noah's selfdestructive behavior related to Sam, his abuser. And I wanted Colby to kick Sam's ass but I also understand that noah was very protective of Colby and wanted to keep him the hell away from danger.

Anyway, this was a fast and hot read with light S/D elements and very young characters. I kept thinking Noah was older, but he really was a boy himself too. I really liked Colby's brother and how he brought the feeling of safe and family to the story, showing just how protected and happy life Colby had lived - especially compared to Noah.

Hurrah for Colby for making a steady claim of Noah and never letting go no matter how the broken young dom struggled.

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

Author Kim Dare gives us a much longer story than her usual fare and in doing so turns Worth Waiting For into a sweet love story that has snarls and potential disasters along the way. This author rarely fails to deliver characters that tug at your heartstrings and these two boys, Colby and Noah, are no exception. We literally watch Colby grow up and morph into a tenacious lover from the innocent boy who harbored a crush for the man across the way. Little did Colby know that he would be a natural submissive to Noah’s more dominant tendencies but never became some cloying doormat, rather a strong and single-minded man who is able to give over control in any sexual encounter.

I really like Kim Dare's books but there are 3 of them that totally stand out for me - the first is Duck the second is perfect timing 6 the stoke of midnight (Mr Templeton mmmmm) and the third is With Love which was just gorgeous. This one has been added to the list that stand out for me. Just lovely. Reading this felt a little different to all of the other Kim Dare books I've read (and I have read a lot of them) but I can't pin down exactly what it is. Maybe because it is a longer story the characters were fleshed out a little more and I became more invested in them, I don't know but, what I read I really enjoyed. This will be like the 3 stand outs a book that I will re-read.

There are not many authors who can make an obsessed teenage stalker grow into a sweet and gentle lover, but Kim Dare pulls it off. This story is short, but no less poignant for its brevity. What this reader found fascinating was determined, persistent strength of the younger MC in the face of the resistance of the older MC. Telling you about the D/s relationship might be too much of a spoiler. Let's just say that ever facet of the characters dovetails with the other, even the weakness of the Dom that he overcomes with the steadfastness of the sub.
This is a nice quick read that will make your lazy Saturday afternoon even better.

I will probably expand this review later on. I just wanted to put something in here for now. I have read several of Kim Dare's books, and while they're usually decent and kinda hot and fun to read, I have never been overly impressed with her books and am hesitant to read new ones when they come out. This one was different. I LOVED this book. I was very close to giving it a 5, but something is stopping me. This book was well written, sad and sweet, and even if the dysfunctionality of the main character(s), there was some major beautiful in there. Just, wow.

Colby was the star of this book.
I love the characters KD writes, in this case Colby. He was a sweet gentle soul who should be protected and nurtured and just never ever hurt. I was happy with this short book, it went through the stages of Noah and Colby's relationship sort of gradually, the sex started almost too early and the relationship was never fully described but fortunately for me, any book with a hero like Colby would be a good book for me. Great book and now i want to go ahead and read Tony's story.
