I am so delighted with this book. The pictures and information are perfect. I will be donating this book to the library where I work for the kids who always love the BUG books :)
What are fireflies? What causes them to light up? What do fireflies eat? Can I catch fireflies? These questions answered and many more. This book answered all those questions we wondered as a child and were too afraid to ask as an adult. Relive the memories of chasing fireflies on a nice warm summer evening.
This book was a really fun read. While I purchased it for some young friends, I could not resist reading “The Fireflies Book” myself. My first thought as I read this was how “The Fireflies Book” seems to reach all ages. It is easy enough for a young reader to understand and yet packed full of information that will have adults fascinated. My plan is to purchase a mason jar, a flashlight, and wrap both up with this book as a gift for some young friends. This could also make a great gift for adult friends to help them relive childhood memories.
A short review for a short book! A very short book. I read it at work, on the reference desk, and it only took me about half an hour. Still, it was packed with pictures and information. I learned about a new-to-me firefly species (the Blue Ghost) and learned that there are year-round synchronous fireflies in southeast Asia, where my cousin lives. I'm a little jealous! (I live in the southeast US, and we only get about two weeks of synchronous fireflies each year.)
I got this book while on a camping trip with my family last year to see the aforementioned synchronous fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Not only do I recommend The Fireflies Book for any and all ages, I DEFINITELY recommend trying to go see the synchronous fireflies if you can! An indescribably awesome experience.
Hubby & I were given this book because we live on a hobby farm we affectionately refer to as "Firefly Farm." We're some of the lucky ones who actually see quite a few of the little critters during the summer along our creek and pond. There is a bit of repetition in this book that's mildly irritating, but the info, projects and resources were all excellent additions and I even learned some things. Overall, I would call this a nice little gift book to give someone for their cottage.
