- Stanley Chi
This book includes personal essays on the author's experiences about booze-drinking. Most of his stories are known to me already probably because I have been in this world at least a decade longer than him. Or maybe cause I probably have more alcohol drinking experiences than what he covered in this book. Well, he joined our book club here in Goodreads called Pinoy Reads Pinoy Books and I invited him to have a drinking spree and he said that doesn't drink a lot. Well, I normally say that I am a moderate drinker but really now: if I love the topic and if I am really with my favorite drinking buddies, I could finish a lot more bottles than I normally consume and still be able to drive.
My favorite story here is about the dog Chowie who is being maltreated by his master. When I thought that the story was misplaced and I would cite it in this review as a complaint, Rodriguez made the connection about the dog and the booze and the impart is surprisingly ingenuous. Those little neat "connections" make the reading of this book quite enjoyable.
For the young people, there are some parts of this book that are informative, e.g. sin taxes, the liquor industry in the Philippines, Malasing kahit walang pera! (Translation: Getting drunk even without penny in the pocket) (actually, this one only takes befriending a moneyed generous friend), etc.
Overall, the book is just like what probably Rodriquez wanted it to be: an easy-to-read conversational in style book that appears like Rodriguez is a drinking buddy telling his friends about his life experiences related to booze. If this is true, that I agree that he achieved his objectives.
Upon closing the book, I felt that urge to repeat my invitation to the author for us to have a drinking session. I want him to become my friend.
