In one of Jaden’s secret ventures to the Upperworld, he develops a strange and powerful ability. Or is it... a curse? Can he use his ability to battle the evil that is about to destroy his Underworld home?
....Or will it destroy him first?
Lee Cross, also known as "Wood-Splitter-Lee" was born and raised in the wilds of Alaska. She enjoys using her imagination to create stories, art and sculptures of fantastic creatures... some of which are depicted in her writings.
Author's Personal Note:
"I view this story as another extension of my artwork. Any mistakes found in the book are my own! I hope the "Year of the Guardian, Curse of Power" can take you on many unforgettable adventures as it did for me..."
I've wanted something made by her for quite a long time, and when she first released her book, I was very excited. I put off buying it for a while for lack of an ebay account and the fact that Christmas is just right around the corner and I am one of the most difficult people to shop for. Too bad I don't have a rich relative who'd gladly buy one of WoodSplitterLee's creatures for me. I'd especially love a wolf, raccoon, or dragon.
Anyways, on to the book. I am so happy to say there are few grammatical and spelling errors throughout the book even though Lee Cross proofed it herself. I have read books in the past that are self published and I had a hard time getting through because of the grammatical errors. I think I've found less in Lee Cross's book than other books published by big companies.
The story is about Jaden who comes from the Underworld and travels to the Upperworld to discover there is a danger threatening his home in the Underworld. I'm in love with his ability and while I'd love to talk about it, I'm not about to spoil it.
As her art suggests, it is full of creatures that are a mixture of danger, beauty, and are simply unique. There are also creatures that are not in her gallery that I know anyone would love reading about.
In all, I'd say this book was a must! If you love her work, then you'll love to own her book like myself. Even if you don't love her work, it'd still be a great read. It is full of both adventure and magic!
I'm leaving this short since I don't want to spoil anything, but it is definitely worth the read.
Now, if I could just afford one of her prized creatures!
The following review is based off my own opinions, thoughts and reactions. So in other words brace yourself. *There may be inappropriate words such as curse words.* You have been advised in advance.*
I have been waiting so long to get my hands on this book and now that I finally do plus got to read it. I'm in complete heaven with this book. My fantasy desires have soared with this book.
First off, I'm a huge nerd for Lee Cross. Her artwork is incredible and she has such an interesting take on the world. She gives you this reality fused with fantasy. She just inspires others to see an incredible beauty in things.
Getting to the book itself, I loved it. The first couple of chapters seemed to drag along for me. It really did feel like a slow movement to the climax and it drove me absolutely bonkers. For me, that was the hardest part to push through.
I think my favorite part of this entire book would be the ending. It just completely blew me away. I wasn't expecting any of that. I had gone into the ending thinking the main character was going to die and that would be it. I'm so glad I was wrong about how the ending would play out. It was truly magical.
All in all, I couldn't have hoped for it to be any better. Lee Cross definitely delivered with this book and I can only hope she creates more books in the future.
