Sleeping with a Psychopath

Rate this book
Leah is a strong, independent woman. She has an exciting career in the music industry, two wonderful children and good friends. Her life was happy and stable, but things change once she meets Joe. He's attractive, charming and attentive. A whirlwind romance unfolds. She catches glimpses of his dark side, but his good points are bright enough to blind her - she thinks she is falling deeply in love with him, when actually she's falling into the trap. He was a predator, and she was his prey. Sleeping with a Psychopath is layered with messages from the protagonist's heart. At times readers will want to reach through the pages and save her. At other times, they will simply admire her determination to survive and applaud her attempts to salvage her dignity. This is also a story about the unbreakable bond between a mother and her children, a very special friendship, and justice served. A.L. Smith takes readers into a woman's confusing and terrifying year in an abusive relationship. Written in the form of a novel, she tells the story from the inside out.

I found this book really easy to read. A true story about a woman who finds herself in an intense new relationship with the perfect man who seems ‘too good to be true.’ This was a look at domestic violence and controlling relationships from the victim’s perspective and, in this case, the victim being a strong, independent woman with her own business who never would have dreamed she’d find herself in this position. I found it demonstrated the powerlessness of allowing someone into your life and then not feeling able to put them out again once they had their feet under the proverbial table. It was interesting to look, in hindsight, at the red flags that could be explained away initially but were perhaps offering an insidious insight into the true character behind the veneer.

Honest and brave

Another book by an intelligent woman whose kindness, empathy and humanity made her a victim of a narcissistic psychopath. Many people in this situation feel shame and embarrassment, and don't speak out or get help. That's why books like this are so important. These men (mostly men, but occasionally women) are master manipulators and even the most savvy woman can find herself trapped and struggling to get free. Thank you for sharing your horrific experience.

Bravo

This story about DV hit home for me. I spent 24 years with an abuser and have been out 2 years now. Depiction of the controlling and mental illness are so typical in these situations and thus is one story about this topic that actually not only tells the story well but it shows the strength we have within ourselves. Sometimes we no longer believe in ourselves and cannot leave.

Brilliant and brave

It was an upsetting read but it was like car crash tv as they say. You are just wishing and praying that she gets out of the situation she's in, we can all sit there and say 'I wouldn't put up with that' but you don't know what fear this lady was in . My god I'm just relieved she's out of it

A must read

Shocking, honestly written, It gives an understanding of how an intelligent, independent, strong woman can get trapped in this situation. I am so glad that she stood up against him.

Couldn’t put this book down. Knew from the start without reading the title that he was too good to be true. Well done in getting away from the psychopath. Not as easy as you might think once you’ve been worn down!

Really good and interesting book about being in a abusive relationship. Straight on point and played out as a novel. Easy read, read in a few hours. This is a true story about domestic abuse and the author explains well her feelings and emotions around the abuse while it is ongoing. Would have loved to know more about this story!

Leah had a great life and met a guy who she fell in love with until she noticed strange behaviour. She was badly abused. Story told how she got away from him.
“ novel based on actual events. She should of tried to get away sooner but who are we to judge what we have not gone through.
Sounds like this happened in Calgary Alberta. I would like to know more about this story”.
