About the author

Dr. Gokul Seshadri is the author of several works of historic fiction in Tamil based on the medieval history of South India. He is also a researcher, specializing in South Indian temple art and architecture.

A software architect by profession, Gokul started exploring his creative writing skills 20 years ago - with his first novel Rajakesari. This was followed by many other novels, short stories and articles. From 2010 onwards, he started pursuing academic studies in History with M.A. and M.Phil. degrees, followed by a doctoral research on Chola Ramayana sculptures. His novels are replete with intricate epigraphic, cultural, and historic references drawn from inscriptions, copper plate grants, literatures and living oral traditions. All of his books have been published by Palaniappa brothers. Also, from 2019 onwards, StoryTel India has been publishing his well known works as audiobooks.

முனைவர் கோகுல் சேஷாத்ரி தமிழில் பல வரலாற்றுப் புதினங்களை படைத்துள்ள எழுத்தாளர். கட்டுரையாளர். மற்றும் வரலாற்றாய்வாளர்.

மென்பொருள் துறையில் பணியாற்றும் இவர் வரலாற்றின் மேல் காதல் கொண்டு 2003ல் எழுதத் துவங்கினார். 2004ல் இணையத்தில் தொடராக வெளிவந்து பெரும் வரவேற்பைப் பெற்ற இராஜகேசரி, தமிழ் இணைய உலகில் நேரடியாக வெளிவந்த முதல் வரலாற்றுப் புதினமாகும். தொடர்ந்து பைசாசம், சேர ர் கோட்டை, திருமாளிகை, உதயபானு உள்ளிட்ட பல நாவல்களைப் படைத்துள்ளார். 2010 முதல் தீவிரமான வரலாற்றாய்வில் ஈடுபட்டு சோழர் கால இராமாயணச் சிற்பங்கள் பற்றிய ஆய்வில் முனைவர் பட்டம் பெற்றுள்ளார். இவரது வரலாற்றாய்வின் தாக்கத்தை இவரது படைப்புக்களெங்கும் நுண்ணிய கல்வெட்டுச் செய்திகளாகவும் இலக்கியத் தரவுகளாகவும் விரவிக் கிடப்பதைக் காணலாம்.

2008 முதல் பழனியப்பா பிரதர்ஸ் நிறுவனம் இவரது புத்தகங்களை வெளியிட்டு வருகின்றனர். மேலும் 2019 முதல் ஸ்டோரிடெல் நிறுவனம் இவரது படைப்புக்களை ஒலிப்புத்தகங்களாகவும் வெளியிட்டு வருகிறது.

ஆங்கிலத்தில் வரும் “goosebumps” என்ற உணர்ச்சி ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் சோழர்களைப் பற்றி படிக்கையில் ஏற்படுவதை தவிர்க்கவே இயலாது.சேரர் கோட்டை பாகம் 1 முடித்த உடனே இதை படிக்க தொடங்கினேன்.அத்தனை கேள்விகளுக்கும் விடை அறியும் ஆர்வம்!

பாண்டிய நாட்டை கடந்து சோழர்கள் சேர தேசத்துக்குள் செல்கிறார்கள்.ஆதித்த கரிகாலனின் கொலைக்கும் காந்தளூர் சாலைக்கும் இருக்கும் தொடர்பை அருள் மொழி வர்மன் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறார்.அவர்களை பழி வாங்க முடிசூடி மூன்று ஆண்டுகளே முடிவடைந்துள்ள நிலையில் தான் இந்த தாக்குதலை அவர் மேற்கொள்கிறார். அது ஒரு கல்வி சாலை என்பதால் வழக்கமான போர் தாக்குதலை அங்கு செய்ய இயலாது என்பதை உணர்ந்த அரசர் நாகப்பட்டினத்தில் உள்ள பதராதித்த மடாலயத்தின் தலைவரான மஹாகாஸ்யப தேரர் என்ற புத்த துறவியின் உதவியை நாடுகிறார். அவர் ஒரு திட்டத்தை முன்மொழிகிறார், அதைச் செயல்படுத்த இரண்டு இளம் சோழ வீரர்கள், கம்பன் அரையன் மற்றும் பரமன் மழபாடி ஆகியோர் அனுப்பப்பட்டனர்.அவர்கள் காந்தளூர் சாலையில் ஆச்சாரியர் குடும்பத்திடம் எப்படி வெற்றி பெறுகிறார்கள் என்பது தான் கதை.

அருள்மொழி வர்மனின் புத்தி கூர்மையும்,அரசியல் ஆற்றலும் மெய் சிலிர்க்க வைக்கிறது.தெளிவாக எதிரிகளின் ஒவ்வொரு அடியையும் முன்பே யூகித்து தாக்குதல் முறையை கையாள்கிறார்.பல வகை திருப்பங்ளுடன் வேகமாக நகர்கிறது கதைக் களம்.புரவியின் ஓசையை வைத்தே அதன் பிரச்னையை புரிந்து கொள்வது,வீரர்களுக்கு ஊக்கம் அளிக்க அவர் படைக்கும் வீரசோழ நாடகப்படை,வீரர்கள் மனம் தளர்ந்தாலும் அவர்களை ஊக்குவிக்கும் விதம் என இராஜ இராஜ சோழர் என்னும் மாவீரனைப் பற்றி இதில் நிறைய தெரிந்து கொள்ள முடிகிறது.

அடுத்த புத்தகத்திற்கான விதையையும் ஆசிரியர் இதில் விதைத்திருப்பது கூடுதல் சிறப்பு! சோழ பெருந்தேசத்தின் பெருமையை விரும்பும் எல்லோரும் கண்டிப்பாக படிக்க வேண்டிய புத்தகம் இது.

Cherar kottai is an epic scale political struggle narrated from 4 viewpoints. It has its thrilling moments sprinkled in the story but is less of a spy thriller compared to Rajakesari. In the 2nd part, the story continues from where it left in the 1st part and ties up most of the loose ends. Few things are left unanswered which I believe is something the author has kept for the Udayabanu novels. Key among these are the identities of Thanai thalaivar, devanaga pandithar and the future actions of Malayanuran and Achuta Namboothiri. The story narrates how the Cholas managed to enter the Southern Chera territories, the tactics and plans of the opposite factions (Pandyas, Naaduvaligal and Malayanuran), the training of the participants (Paraman Malapadiyar, Kamban Maniyanar, Vamanan Namboothiri and Achuta Namboothiri) for the kalamaruthal. The excitement builds up as the competition starts and the author's description and diagrams help us visualize the contest very well. Overall a great read and I would rate it 4.5 stars. The cons are that the suspense and spying is toned down in this part compared to 1st part and that it is hard to digest that thanai thalaivar mostly is a no show with no tactics to help the opponents when they need it most.

Excellent reads, both part 1 and part 2. The way all seemingly disconnected events are stitched together, in the end, is brilliant. Both parts are page-turners, and it's hard to keep the books down.

There are a few comments:
1. Some mysterious characters have not been given proper closure (not naming them here due to spoilers).
2. I did not understand why the naluthalikkarargal did not play a part in the last kalamarukkam tournament, as they played an important role in earlier tournaments (unless I've missed out on some detail).
3. The twist at the end was kind of predictable, and IMO, unnecessarily filmy.
4. Shuffling between places in subsequent (or the same) chapters might confuse one about the characters initially. But it becomes clear once we get a grasp on the characters and the places.

P.S.: I read Cherar Kottai before Rajakesari. It's better to read Rajakesari first, as Cherar Kottai is a flashback narrated by Mazhapadiyar to Ambalavanar.

முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரங்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும், ஒன்று அவர்களை பற்றி அவர்களுக்கே தெரியாத ஒரு விசயம் இல்லை அவர்களை பற்றி மற்றவர்களுக்கு தெரியாத ஒரு விஷயம் என்று பல முடிச்சுகள். அம்முடிச்சுக்கள் தான் கதை விறுவிறுப்பாக செல்ல உதவுகிறது என்று நினைக்கிறேன். ஆனால் ஒரு முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரத்தின் உண்மை முகத்தை இரசிகர்களின் கணிப்பிற்கே விட்டுள்ளார். வரலாற்று புதினத்தை தொடராக எழுதுபவர் இவர் மட்டும் தான் என்று நினைக்கிறேன். இராஜகேசரியின் முன் கதை இது. இதன் தொடர்ச்சி உதயபானு. இவரின் எழுத்து நடையும், விறுவிறுப்பாக கதை சொல்லும் விதம் அவரின் அடுத்த கதையை படிக்க தூண்டுகிறது.

One of the best historical fiction I ever read in Tamil .,and also a page turner!.Can't wait to read more books by Mr Gokul Sheshadri.
