A rousing, sumptuous picaresque novel set in a nineteenth century "Russia of the mind". The stunning prose elevates this book above traditional historical/ romantic sagas, as do the writer's wit, her precisely-drawn characters, the remarkable attention to the intricate conventions of St. Petersburg society, the astute observations of sexual politics, and the clever allusions to figures and plots from Russian literature (Tolstoy, Pushkin). A wonderful read.
An abysmal novel set in 19th century Russia that is laughable in extreme. Author mostly plagerizes the story from classic Russian literature without a thought to the actual time or setting. The plot is silly in the extreme, and I ended wasting four hours of valuable time that I could have spent reading something better. Awful!
An unusual story of a young woman in 19th Century Russia. A tale of survival, a tale of her trying to live in a man's world. Picturesque and witty an interesting story, but many times unbelievable, as sometimes even true stories can be. The lovely writing, prose, in fact is an enjoyable adventure of reading.
This historical novel features a very unusual heroine, who in order to avoid poverty joins the Russian army. It also includes a romance between the Countess and her army captain.
