Planning a wedding is never easy—especially when the Russian Mafia wants you dead.
On Best Behavior—the third and final book in The Conduct Series—finds our favorite couple moving forward, despite the odds. Following a pardon by the Governor of Illinois, ex-cons Sophie Taylor and Grant Madsen are finally free to pursue their love and the life that lies ahead for them. Grant now fights the forces that have hurt his loved ones by working undercover for the FBI, and he has infiltrated the Russian Mafia in Chicago. Sophie dives into swimming with Grant’s nephew, Ben, and into her career as a psychology professor. Thankfully, now it’s Ben’s turn to heal through therapy sessions with Dr. Hunter Hayes.
With so many things going right for Grant and Sophie, it's too bad the Russians aren’t their only threat. When Grant’s father, Enzo Barberi, discovers his own son thwarted his plan to break out of prison, his overdeveloped sense of vengeance flares to life. As Sophie scrambles to save her fiancé, it's impossible to say who will kill Grant first—the Russians or his Italian family. Can love triumph over evil? Are hard work and a pledge to be on best behavior ever enough?

3.5 Stars! I'm sorry to see this series end! Grant and Sophie will forever remain one of my favorite couples!
So here it is, the final book in the Conduct series. I'm sad to let go of characters that I've grown to love, most especially Grant and Sophie. I enjoyed the unique way that these two came together and their journey to love. They trusted and believed, had each other's backs and pulled themselves up from pretty difficult circumstances. Throughout the series, there was never any denying that these two were made for each other.
I struggled in the beginning of the book and didn't fully engage until about 50% into the read, and I think part of the problem was trying to remember people's roles and circumstances that took place in the first two books. While I don't like an author to go on in length about what we already know, I would have appreciated a flashback reference here and there, and done without the filler scenes involving Sophie and her psychology research. My mind was working so hard to remember , it's been over a year since I read Bad Behavior, that I felt disconnected...almost as if I'd never read the first two books.
Also, Grant and Sophie didn't spend as much time together as I would have liked. There is a reason for this, but my desire to have them together, the complicated plot, and my mind working on overtime, made me feel like the book was dragging. Then about halfway in, the excitement started, and I was on board again.
I loved Sophie's reaction and what she did when Grant had to extend himself a little more with a role he was playing in his involvement with the FBI. It made me happy the that the author didn't inject unnecessary relationship drama between them, when we know, from the previous books that they are solid...a united front! It was so good to see that they trusted each other completely. It's what I love about those two and this series.
Ben's involvement in this book was a highlight for me and I enjoyed his therapy sessions with Dr. Hunter. It broke my heart when this beautiful young boy poured his heart out. It was fun to see him interacting with Sophie, he had such great love for her, his Uncle Grant, his mother and the father he never really got to know. Just thinking about Logan nearly made me cry. Ben's your typical teenage boy, with typical teenage attitude, off the cuff comments...and Jennifer Lane did a great job portraying his character. I adored him and little Dot too! I would love to see the author bring Ben back in a book of his own about 10 years into his future. That would be something. Then I could see what Grant and Sophie were up to and read about one of my favorite characters in this series.
Jerry and Marilyn were back too, and I couldn't have been more pleased with where they ended up, or rather who they ended up with. And the gift they gave Sophie and Grant...perfect!! It had me chuckling.
While this was not my favorite in the series, that honor goes to With Good Behavior, it had some really beautiful moments and just being back with Grant and Sophie made it worth reading. It was a slow start, but it ended on a high note. There was plenty of action, humor, some steamy lovin', familiar faces, and it all kept me engaged. But what really sealed the deal was seeing Sophie and Grant being able to break away from the shackles that still had their grasp on them, and being able to live the life they were so deserving of!!

A chance meeting outside a parole officer’s office. A supportive hug from a stranger. An attraction that blossomed into a beautiful romance amidst a backdrop of betrayal, complex family issues, redemption, and second chances.
Jennifer Lane has weaved an exciting tale of love between Grant Madsen and Sophie Taylor, two amazing and good-hearted individuals driven into bad situations.
In With Good Behavior (CONduct #1), we joined them as they began their journey in picking up the pieces of their lives after serving time in prison. In Bad Behavior (CONduct #2), we see their struggles in healing, moving forward, and taking control of their destinies which were taken away from them and landed them in prison. On Best Behavior (CONduct #3) is the culmination of Grant Madsen and Sophie Taylor’s story as they prepare to face their future together as husband and wife. That is, if they could stop the Russian mafia and Grant’s father from ruining their plans.
My review (based on an ARC provided by Omnific Publishing)
I have been a fan of the series since I discovered it in late 2012. It was such a refreshing read after surrounding myself with troubled billionaire alpha males. Grant, a beta hero, was a breath of fresh air and was so endearing that even I wanted to protect him from the big bad wolves, aka his family. Sophie, on the other hand, was very relatable that it’s easy for women like me to identify with her. Together, they were wonderful. You couldn’t help but just root for them and wish that they would ultimately get the happy life that they deserve.
Thankfully, it would only take me months to find out. It must be said, they felt like a year, especially because I was also itching to read more about one of my favorite supporting characters in the story, good ol’ Uncle Joe (ehem!)
The first third of the book was a little rough for me. There were scenes that seemed unconnected. I found myself going back and forth to see if I missed a page or a paragraph. It felt that some parts were cut in the editing process.
However, as the story progressed, the flow got smoother and I just enjoyed reading the increasingly complicated story.
Grant and Sophie were apart most of the time, though the reason they had to be away from each other was understandable and justified. Sophie’s doubts and insecurities felt very natural. On the other hand, Grant was too perfect. He was so considerate of Sophie’s feelings and almost always thought of her before he acts on anything. Surely, if a man like that exists, he deserves to have his own statue in a church!
I especially liked the therapy sessions and Sophie’s conversations with other psychologists. I learned a lot from them and was delighted to realize that their analyses are usually similar to mine. The frustrated psychologist in me really wish that Dr. Lane was my professor *wink*
The flashbacks were heartbreaking. There were moments I found myself tearing up for Grant, but there were also times that I couldn’t help but smile because Uncle Joe was in it. *sigh* Hey, who doesn’t like a kind-hearted man in uniform?!
Ben’s story arc was also a good addition. His emotions and reactions are typical of a teenager. I must commend the author for creating authentic characters and believable dialogues. I am crossing my fingers that there will be a spinoff for the young Barberi someday, with Grant, Sophie, and a married Uncle Joe (preferably to me) making cameos, of course. Hint! Hint!
Though he doesn’t deserve it, I’m devoting four sentences for Enzo Barberi. He has been a fairly one dimensional character to me in the previous books, which made it easy for me to plainly hate him. We see another side of him in this book. I admit I was surprised with how much I softened up, even a little for him here.
Fans of romantic suspense novels will definitely not be disappointed, there are enough scary Russians and creepy villains to keep you awake and reading until you find out that Sophie and Grant are safe.
On Best Behavior has been, over-all, an engaging read. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it scared me, it made my heart ache (in a good way), it made me feel giddy, and it left me with a smile on my face as I reached the final chapter of Grant and Sophie's heartwrenching and heartwarming story.
Recommended for book lovers searching for intelligent romance novels.
Jennifer Lane's inspiration for Grant Madsen: Wentworth Miller

This is the final installment on the CONduct Series by Jennifer Lane, and I loved it! It was refreshing for me, keeping in mind the fact that I always get pissed because of the heroine, in this book I didn’t, and that’s progress!!
Ever since I read Streamline, I was hooked with her writing style and intensity, she gets to you, maybe it has something to do with the fact she is a psychologist? Anyways, I will always find myself looking forward to Jen’s books.
Take a look, just, look:
“I thought the white was for virgins. So why’re you wearing it, Taylor? You put the whore in horizontal.”
I want Rog to be my Zumba partner LOLOLOL! Seriously, the guy cracks me up!
I think that, for a book boyfriend, Grant is very relatable, and I really like that, and c’mon, he’s delicious :P *blushie*
“Our road’s been destroyed, smashed to pieces…but still, it led to you. I’m blessed.”
Man… I want to be his Bonnie…
Another thing I like about Jen’s writing style is that she makes you feel smart, when you are done, you don’t feel like you wasted your neurons, which I have to admit, happens a lot these days.
I think the Omnific group has an amazing clan of editors and beta readers, because I just came to the realization I have not come across any grammar or spelling errors, and y’all don’t know how happy that makes me! I wish I was one of them.
This book was a flawless end to the series and I want to congratulate Jennifer on her amazing job!
Also thank you to Tracy Olsen for sending me the ARC, that was cool chica, very cool ;)
After having read book 2, I couldn’t resist diving deep into the final book of this series to see how it all concludes for Grant and Sophie! Grant takes on the Russian mafia as he goes undercover with the FBI. Oh boy!
First, I want to mention that Grant’s undercover name made me giggle every time it came up, LOL! This installment very much showcases Grant and Sophie happy together and hard at work moving on living life after getting out of prison. All the happiness could be thwarted though if the Russians have any say in the matter. While Grant works hard to gain the trust of the Russian mafia, his nephew, Ben, finds a friend in Sophie, and they bond over their love for the sport of swimming. I loved this part of the story. Ben is such a great character. I’ve enjoyed his character growth throughout the entire series. This time he’s the one on Dr. Hunter Hayes’ couch. As for Grant and Sophie, let’s just say that being forced to be apart can make for nice, steamy encounters!
I love that Jennifer Lane can write really awesome antagonists. Mullens was quite a sleezy character! By the third book I know that she deliciously builds up the suspense. Once it all starts rolling, Ms. Lane has a way of always surprising you with great twists. I was expecting that this time, and she did not disappoint in the least. I’m so sad to have reached the end of this series as I have thoroughly enjoyed this ride. Thank you, Jennifer Lane, for introducing me to Grant and Sophie!
I have to tell you that I love this series and have been looking forward to reading this book, and when I received a request to review, I had to suppress a squee and happy dance. I loved this book! McSailor and Bonnie are back and Grant is working undercover for the FBI. Plenty of suspense, more Ben and other characters from previous books. Definitely a perfect ending to the series and I was not disappointed. If you read the first two, you will definitely want to read this one. If you don't know McSailor and Bonnie, you need to check out With Good Behavior and Bad Behavior.
i don't know how it is possible, but these characters keep getting better and better. Sophie and Grant really evolved and connected in this book which was beautiful to see as well as Ben's relationship with these two, his mom and his past. Really fast read! I'll miss these characters!
On Best Behavior by Jennifer Lane (Book #3: CONduct Series) Source: Author Rating: 5/5 stars
**SPOILERS!! Stop reading if you haven’t read books one and two!!**
The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming and Grant is once again caught up in the middle of the mess and looking to make things right. Oh Grant, will you ever learn?
On Best Behavior is the third and final installment of Jennifer Lane’s CONduct series and it is a fine ending to what has proven to be a very good adult romantic trilogy. At the end of Bad Behavior, Grant and Sophie had both been pardoned, were newly engaged and looking forward to starting their lives together without the taint of criminal and parolee hanging over each of them. While Sophie is all kinds of on board with this plan, Grant unfortunately has other ideas. Agreeing to work undercover for the FBI was not on Sophie’s agenda but Grant, still trying to make the world safe from the mafia has agreed to help the FBI take down a nasty group of Russians who have taken up residence in Chicago.
Though he knows the assignment will be difficult, Grant is convinced he can help the FBI and is determined to put these very bad men behind bars. As he gets deeper into the organization, Grant’s determination becomes even further resolved when he sees the abuse the women are subject to and the filth the bosses are involved in. If only the Russians were Grant’s only problem. As is typical, Grant’s horrifyingly awful family is once again up to no good and should Grant die as a result of their scheming, then so be it. To make matters even worse, in order to protect Sophie and Ben, Grant is forced to separate from them and only see them when he is absolutely certain he isn’t being tailed. Oh, Grant!
Though Sophie (mostly) understands Grant’s desire to help the FBI, she isn’t thrilled with being separated from her fiancé. Of the two, it is Sophie who truly appreciates the level of danger Grant is putting himself into and does her best to hide her fear and support her man. Keeping Sophie busy is young Ben who has joined the swim team, has his eye on a beautiful young lady and, is trying desperately to stay on the straight and narrow in order to avoid turning out like his dad. Once again, the family from Hell butts in and drags Ben and Sophie into a huge mess that eventually wraps itself around Grant and his mess to create one ginormous and seriously ugly mess. Will these two ever, ever, ever find their HEA??
The Bottom Line: Though On Best Behavior started out a bit on the slow side, once it got rolling it didn’t slow down and I totally understood the need for the slow beginning. Even though the series is already two books old, Lane had a lot of ground work to lay for this final installment and by the end of the read I saw the beginning as more of a slow burn leading up to a big boom rather than a true slow start. There are the Russians, the FBI, the family from Hell and so much emotional drama that I was worn out in the totally good way by the end of the read. And then, there is the end and man, oh man is it a pretty perfect way to tie up Grant and Sophie’s story. Overall, the CONduct series has proven to be a very solid romantic suspense trilogy and one I feel comfortable recommending to a wide range of readers. :)

On Best Behaviour is another cracking good read from Jennifer Lane. The last in the CONnect Series, this book continues the history of Grant and Sophie and his obnoxious crime family saga.
At the beginning of the book, they still have one pre-marital therapy session with Dr Hayes, and this was a favourite scene for me, as one of the aspects of book #2 that I adored was precisely the account of their struggles to achieve better communication and intimacy while sitting uncomfortably in the therapy room. Here, we are treated to several, very poignant recollections of moments from Grant's childhood and teenage years featuring the wonderful uncle Joe, the only real male role model he'd ever had. These were utterly heartbreaking, but they also afford us a more rounded understanding of the development of his character. He experienced so much loss and suffering, that it is a testament to his strength and solid values that he ended up being such a wonderful, understanding and decent man.
But before the couch in Dr Hayes office is passed on to Ben to occupy, another very typical and commonly recurring therapist dilemma is sympathetically presented in this book: how to best deflect clients when they ask you personal questions. I loved how this was resolved here, with Dr Hayes using humour and spontaneity. He is adorable. I really would read his own book very happily!
I loved the scenes depicting the budding relationship between Sophie and Grant's nephew Ben. The young boy is in such desperate need for good role models and mentorship, that their bond over a mutually loved sport were sad and uplifting at the same way. It was a very accomplished part of the book.
However, the jealousy plot device (when Sophie and Kristen go to the bar to spy on Grant, and she sees him smooching with someone else, immediately deciding that he is cheating on her) was slightly implausible, and not totally psychologically congruent as at that time, Grant and Sophie were in great form in their relationship. Luckily, it only lasted for about a millisecond, as I was losing patience with Sophie. Hello! He is undercover! And what is the main, most glaring element of undercover work? DECEPTION!
With all her psychological knowledge, shouldn't she wait to collect more data, and then make up her mind about what is going on, rather than putting his operation in jeopardy? How could she be so stupid? I was quite angry with her for doing that and immediately wanted them to have an emergency session with Dr Hayes!
You disappoint me, Sophie!!!!
Luckily she came to her senses so fast! Still, I realised soon that engaging emotionally in this way with a literary character is one of the signs of great fiction. It shows you are interested in their journey and you care. You are invested in the story. And I'm happy to report that I overcame my own issues and I managed to forgive her as the story continued.
And the story continued at great pace. A new villain is introduced, there are kidnappings, tense scenes with imprisoned Mafia Don Enzo Barberi, a hit on someone is ordered, leading to much anguish, tears and another visit to hospital, many bad baddies, several good guys, and there is no one dull moment until the end. All in all, another very accomplished story by an author that I'm sure I'll come back to for more entertainment.

Who am I kidding? I am violently fangirling right now.
I suggest to everybody to stay for at least two metres away from me unless you wanna get hit by my too-excited-to-uncalm-totally-fangirling arm.
I did my best not to fangirl so hard. Trust me.
Okay, everybody, read the series now. NOW. What're you doing? Stop reading. Go get the books now.
Okay, if you insist on reading the would-not-be-so-useful review, then it's your choice. But you're pretty much wasting your time.
Okay, I'll make a little run down on what happened.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP. I am totally fangiring.
Okay, Ms. Jen spoiled me a teeny tiny bit so I was worried the whole time. This is too much of thriller! I swear. Out of the three books, this one would be the one I'd reaaallllyyyy consider a thriller. Yeah, I'm putting that as a genre on the blog post. Definitely the most action-filed book from the series. And the action didn't only happen in the chasing-the-bad-guys moments. Ehem.
Okay, now I want my Grant.
The writing is fine as ever. Mighty fine as it'll ever be.
The characters are the same, getting stronger and I'm loving them all the more.
And the only thing that'll make me love this series all the more is AN EPILOGUE.Hi Ms. Jen!!! :D
In this book, we'd get a little more of Ben and his love life Oops. Sorry. Aaannnddd danger ahead. I swear, you'll be half-worried, half-dying half-excited in Grant's moments. I had a heart attack, thank you Ms. Jen.
Anyway, I won't spoil anyone about the ending. JUST. READ. THE. FREAKING. SERIES. NOW.
This is officially added to my favorite-series-EVER list. And Ms. Jen is officially one of my favorite authors.
I love the whole series. READ THEM NOW. DON'T MAKE ME SAY IT AGAIN.
I'm so sad to see your story come to a conclusion but I'm in love with the way that it wrapped up. The way that you both love each other completely and deal with the many obstacles that seem to constantly pop up in a mature, honest and respectful way is such a refreshing change of pace to a lot of other romances out there. Grant, your family and their connections just can't seem to let you move forward despite all of your efforts and I both loved and hated that you decided to take matters into your own hands by working undercover with the FBI to take down the Russian mafia. I found myself angry with you at times while you were working undercover. I wondered if you weren't too nice of a guy and was worried that your need to rescue those that can't rescue themselves would end up hurting Sophie, and your relationship with her. Once again though, Sophie handled the situation with trust, grace and patience and I fell even more in love with her for it. Sophie, besides being the strong female that I fell in love with, you were also an amazing aunt and, in a way, mother figure for Ben. I love that shared a love of swimming with him and that you both used it as a way to bond/connect. You were so great to be by his side assuring him that his uncle Grant loved him and wanted to be around for him despite the fact that his undercover work didn't allow it at the time. You were just what he needed to help him choose a path different than his father and grandfather's. I enjoyed getting a better glimpse into Ben's life this time around as well. It was like I got to see Ben turn into a man right before my very eyes. It's great that he got his own bit of romance along the way. Once again your story was full of intrigue, action, suspense, romance and an fun. There wasn't a dull moment and I'm grateful that, while it's a story full of drama, it was never so over the top that I found myself rolling my eyes. I think that it ended in the only way that was ever possible for the two of you. I'm positive that this series is one that I will be revisiting in the future and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good romantic suspense.
Behave Yourselves in the Future, Jaime
*I received an ARC from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review
What can I say about the final book in the Conduct series. I had been counting down to the release date wanting to see how things would end for Sophie and Grant. As always Jennifer didn't disappoint. I had to reread the series just to refresh my mind on the Barberi crime drama. I loved how Jennifer just flows from one book straight into the next.
So in this one Grant decides to work undercover with the FBI to take down some Russians who are supplying drugs. His undercover name is a play on his nickname from Sophie Mick Saylor. Sophie is now helping Anita with research at the women's prison. She does a great job of connecting with prisoners, having been one herself. But I also think Sophie is just naturally good at listening and picking up on people's inner thoughts.
With Grant going undercover you don't see much of them together, you get to see their relationships with their friends and family grow. I especially liked how Jennifer made Sophie a prominent person in Ben's life, bonding over swimming.
Of course you can't write a book about Grant and Sophie without bringing in the last surviving Barberi leader, Enzo who is now pissed that his plan to get out if prison was foiled. He wants revenge. We see another prisoner return, the weird and scary Ricker from book one. He has a fascination with Grant and just so happens to be getting out of piston soon.
So we have the Russians, the Barberi Don and a German all after Grant. In the middle that we have a wedding being planned. How will Sophie and Grant come out on top? Together as always though Jennifer did have me cringing at times with what Grant saw and was asked to do at times.
In the end, I loved how it all came together. I'm going to miss my two favorite cons, but I'm glad they were able to get their lives back.
It was also great to see Ben come forward and play a bigger role in this one. I wouldn't mind reading a novella on him.
ON BEST BEHAVIOR is the third and final instalment in Jennifer Lane’s contemporary, suspense series-Conduct. Jennifer is a psychologist by trade and she uses many psychological references, therapy and theories throughout her storylines. I would suggest reading in order, as most of the storyline premise has been building from the previous two novels and there is some reference made to what has happened to get the characters to the point where they are in the current story. The story is told in present day with flashbacks and memories.
Some background: Our leading characters Sophie and Grant met on the steps of their mutual parole officer and life has never been the same. Grant is a former navy officer who sacrificed his career to protect family: Sophie lost her license when she crossed a doctor/patient boundary. In this third and final instalment, Grant and Sophie should be preparing for their upcoming wedding but the FBI and the Russian mafia have other plans.
The storyline follows several paths including Grant’s undercover work for the FBI with the Russian mob; dirty prison guards; Ben (Grant’s sixteen year old nephew) and his struggles with drugs, teen love, and his mother: and Sophie. We are witness to family betrayal and heartache and, you can’t help but feel sympathy for Grant because of the father that destroyed more than one family.
The storyline has some graphic violence with sexual situations and assault; On Best Behavior is the culmination of the Barberi family dysfunctional dynamics and reads like a study in psychological disorders and diseases. Generation after generation of mob affiliation, abuse and murder will all end with the final instalment in Jennifer Lane’s CONduct series.
This is the third and final book in the Conduct Series, and I'm sad to say good bye to Grant and Sophie. Some people have favorite celebrity couples. I have favorite fictional couples, and Grant and Sophie are one of mine.
While On Best Behavior could potentially be read as a stand-alone, I think this series works best if the three books are read in order. There are many intricacies within the characters' relationships that would be missed if you didn't start at the beginning. My feeling is that this book focuses more on an in-depth plot, whereas the first two focused more on the characters' relationships. Without the understanding that comes from reading the first two, a reader might not build enough connection with Grant and Sophie.
The plot here is a culmination of things that happened in the prior books, as well as additional elements specific to this story. The action moves at a good pace, and the details are handled well.
I love the moments of insight that Sophie, Grant, and even Ben experience as their psychotherapy progresses. These little tidbits not only give us a better understanding of the characters, but they're also important bits of information for all of us to hold onto as we move through life.
On Best Behavior is the perfect ending to a storybook couple I've grown to love.
A beautiful ending to a long journey. After a long wait, this book came to me just like a birthday present that I enjoyed tremendously. It was incredible to see grow each of the characters and become better people, to fight their fears and recognize their mistakes. Jennifer, you've managed to encapsulate in a book the best and the most important of our work in psychology: healing the souls of patients and help them become the best version of themselves. Thank you very much for these wonderful books. I can't wait to read what you'll give us next.
This is a great ending to a really interesting series (although I want to hear more about Ben. I got a little attached to Ben, especially in his therapy sessions.) It's well written and thoughtful, definitely not "romance novel fluff". There's psychiatrists and mafia dons and scary-ass Russians. Oh and hot guys who sing Sinatra, and sometimes they wear dress whites which is too sexy. Overall a great series that you can sink your teeth into.
A great end to the series. Loved how Sophie helped save Grant in a way that I did not see coming but that really worked. Like the whole thing but the last chapters were real pager turned. Also liked how both Grant and Sophie continue to use the therapy lessons from Hunter - it was funny but also something that really helped both of them.
