This book is really authored more by Joyce than Bruce Erickson, though both add touching and inspiring insights. Their story highlights the unfairness of severe trial: three of their six children were born healthy, but lost most control of their bodies within their first few months of life due to an unexplainable condition, presumably genetic. The book shows the couple's individual (and different) responses to the unimaginable suffering of their children and the consequent disruption to their expected planned journey into marital, family, occupational and social achievement and satisfaction. Their spiritual journeys detailed in this book offer hope to all of us who experience grief and suffering and testify to God's love, even when it doesn't come through desired, prayed for healing, prosperity and expected undemanding relationships.

This is the story of a Latter-day Saint mother and father who raised 3 healthy girls and 3 children with a rare and severely disabling disease. They are honest about the struggles they had. I found it uplifting because of the lessons they learned and were willing to teach. Some of the experiences they had were very beautiful. They stayed true to their faith, also, which I found inspiring.

This is now one of my all time favorite books. I will read this daily along with my scripture study. Not sure if it was because my niece was handicapped and has passed away that this book brought tears to my eyes repeatedly or because I totally have had the same feelings and questions about adversity? I so recommend anyone experiencing challenges and feeling discouraged to read this one!

The story about Heather is so tender, one of my favorites. This book is good if looking for something to motivate you to work on personal improvement as well as deal with affliction and hardship in life.

Interest in this book because of the story of Heather... and her brother (which I heard over 15 years ago)... I want to read it form the source.
