River Reckoning

Bond Mason’s roots run deep in the backwoods hamlet of Trespass, Florida. Nestled against the banks of the Suwannee River, the only home she’s ever known holds bittersweet memories of a family long gone. Except one of her ghosts isn’t dead and possessive ex-lover James Kyle wants her back.

U.S. Deputy Marshal Nathan Gates sights are set on capturing fugitive Robert Kyle. Wanted for the cold-blooded murder of a DEA agent, Robert is suspected of being hidden away with his moonshine-brewing, marijuana-growing family of fellow lawbreakers, one of which is his brother, James.

Nathan expected high temperatures when he arrived in Trespass. What he hadn’t counted on is his searing attraction to southern beauty Bond Mason. She winds him around her finger like a tendril of Spanish moss, but his lawman’s intuition tells him she’s hiding secrets too. When he finally convinces her to talk, he’s not prepared for the dark truths she reveals about her hometown.

The Suwannee is deep, but Trespass’s sins run much deeper. For once, Nathan might be in over his head.

I started reading when I was four, thanks to a babysitter who found out the only way to get me to sit still (and shut up) was to put a book in my hand. By the time I entered kindergarten, I’d blown through just about every Little Golden Book ever printed. Ten years later, much to my mother’s dismay, I found her stash of paperback romance novels. She tried to divert me back to something more chaste by buying me Harlequins, but I still snuck copies of hers when she wasn’t looking. Shanna, The Flame and the Flower, and Fires of Winter will always hold special places in my heart because they introduced me to roguish heroes, headstrong heroines, and the trouble they could get into together.

4.5 Stars! LOVED IT!

I inhaled this book. I think I read it less than 24 hours, which normally wouldn’t be that big of a deal but this was not a short book and this has been a crazy week (and it’s only Tuesday night). I had a late night of reading and I read until I couldn’t keep my eyes open. The next morning, I stayed in the tub to finish this book, while I had a child at home with a cold. Luckily, said child was on day 2 of the cold, was medicated with Mucinex and had unlimited use of the iPad. All was well.

The setting of this book (Trespass, Florida), totally drew me in. I was born and raised in the South and I’ve spent some time paddling around on family trips in rivers similar to the one in this book. Ms. Lyn made me feel like I was there again.

I finished this book in an evening. It's not short, but I couldn't put it down. It didn't take long for me to get into the book, the author had me from the moment Bond reveals that her name is because of a film (and no, not James Bond). Add in the swampy South, and I was set. (I'd read a couple of Intrigues by Jana de Leon set in the South as well, and this book reminded me a bit of them, though those were set in Louisiana, I think.) Mix this in with corruption, bribery, stalker-ex boyfriends, and a couple of delectable US Marshals, and it's just about perfect.

It's apparently first in a series, but for those of you worried about cliffhanger endings -- don't be. Unlike a lot of romance novels these days, this one has a good solid ending, satisfying my needs perfectly.

U.S. Marshals Nathan Gates and Ben Hardy come to Trespass, FL to apprehend fugitive, Robert Kyle, who is charged with the murder of a federal agent. Their first stop is Mason’s Fish Camp, where they meet with owner, Bond Mason. Nathan and Bond are instantly attracted to each other, though each has their own reasons for thinking a relationship between the two of them is a bad idea. Nathan knows better than to get involved with anyone having to do with one of his cases, and Bond doesn’t want Nathan to know the true nature of her relationship with the Kyle family, especially her former lover turned obsessive stalker, Jimmy Kyle.

The citizens of Trespass and Felton County have been living in the shadow and in fear of the Kyle family for years. The local sheriff, several deputies, FWC and FDLE agents are all on the Kyle payroll, creating a feeling of hopelessness amongst the townspeople. The corrupt small-town, backwoods sheriff is a common stereotype that often crosses the line into caricature. Jenny Lyn has written Sheriff Poe with enough arrogance and stupidity to make him someone you love to hate and can’t wait to see get what’s coming to him, but still realistic and believable.

Bond’s complicated feelings for her first love, Jimmy Kyle are well written and I truly understood her dilemma. Our first glimpses of Jimmy show him to be an attractive man, willing to do what it takes to win back the woman he loves. However, underneath his sexy exterior, is a man willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants. No matter who gets hurt in the process.

The relationships in River Reckoning are interesting and authentic. In spite of their fear and numbness, there is a strong sense of community in Trespass. I genuinely liked the people I met in this book. They just need someone willing to stand up to the Kyles and the sheriff. Whether that someone is a U.S. Marshal or one of their own, is a big question.
Jenny Lyn’s descriptions of the Florida swamps are detailed enough to allow the reader to picture it, without overshadowing the story. The plot is interesting, well paced and believable. I really was intrigued by the story and had to know how it all played out.

Fans of the tv show, Justified, will notice some similarities between the Kyle family’s marijuana growing and moonshine business and that of the Bennett family. Virginia Kyle’s specialty, Apple Pie moonshine, brought Mags Bennett to mind. That is probably my biggest criticism of River Reckoning, and it isn’t a huge distraction or the main focus of the story.

River Reckoning is the first book in a planned series and I can’t wait to read the next book. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will be Ben’s story. If you like a little suspense and intrigue, along with a good story, likable characters and plenty of hot sex, you won’t want to miss this one!

I do wish we could do half-stars. This really deserves a 4.5, not a 4. ARGH!
