This is a cute book that could be used for Pre-K through Kindergarten to teach the alphabet concept. The illustrations in this book are cute and funny looking. The only issue I had with this book is that some of the animal names were difficult to pronounce. This is not a book I would have the children read by themselves because of the difficulty of some of the words.
The author was trying to be creative in a Seussian kind of way and totally missed the the boat. It seems like it was written by a three year old and illustrated by a four year old.
As a preschool teacher and an ex-professor of preschool reading readiness at the college level, a good alphabet book is of high interest to me, as I use them to teach the children first letter sounds in words. A to Z of Silly Animals has a few problems for me to use with very young children that do not have a clear concept of the animals used in the book. The first picture was funny for an adult but for a four-year-old that has never seen an aardvark; the picture with two heads is not appropriate as it shows a false image of an unknown animal. With all the spin on the animals and funny pictures it does not accomplish the learning goals we need to address with young children that are not familiar with a wide range of animals. It leads to false conclusions and confusion for them. The book is more appropriate for older children at third grade or above.
Cute and silly but really without a plot. There were a few creatures that the series actually did some good on that I would place into an alternative world or zoo but the others were just ridiculous while the only thing that made them stand out from the main creature they copied was either a joined creature or a mutation such as the short-necked giraffe.
The other thing is there is no mythical creatures in this list and for the author or editor to claim so is undeserving of the term. Also I didn't enjoy the fact that some animals seem to have a bit more lore to them while others had only a sentence to mention something that didn't give any insight into the creature.
Just like the cover says, it's a book of silly animals. It's pure nonsense and I'm sure it would have been enjoyed by my now adult children when they were young. I could just imagine them coming up with their own versions of impossible animals. There was an odd formatting issue on many of the pages, where the text was underlined with dashes and the words 590 highlighters. I hope the author can sort that out. But the pictures were suitably bizarre and the pages had plenty of whitespace and clear text.
The animal names are hard to pronounce, so it won't help your kid learn letter sounds.
The animal combinations are confusing, so it's hard to see the joke.
The one-sentence descriptions will be hard for younger kids to understand, but they won't hold the interest of other kids.
The pictures are slightly amusing. The text is awful. I'd ask for my money back, but at least it was free on Kindle. I still won't be reading it with the kid, though.
The book was cute and simple. I'm not sure I would let my child read it because it might confuse him or her as to the difference between real and fake animals. If he or she was old enough to know the difference, this book would be great.
It is a very cute book but it confused my son who is in kindergarten and learning to read. The animals in the book are fictious animals and my son doesn't get that even though the word is printed in the book it is not a real word. The pictures really grasp his attention. Kudos to the illustrator!
Rumors love to go to parties they're very noisy and like to jump around a lot. Hammer horse might not be as fast as normal horse but they are much easier to steer.
I had my seven year old nephew read this book with me. I think I laughed a little more than he did. But we both enjoyed all the ridiculous animals. His favorite was the Velcrow. Mine was the Reindoceros.
Kind of cute, but would be careful of the children you read it to because it could cause some confusion between real and fake animals depending on the child and their level of knowledge/development.
When I first got my Kindle Paperwhite, my then 6-ish year old nephews were enamored with the idea of a book you could read in the dark. I made them their own folder and they filled it with books, but every night for months on ends, we read this together. I think I can recite this silly alphabet in my sleep. Even now at 16, they still ask if this book is on my Kindle and then they laugh.
I've seen a lot of reviews talking about how this isn't a good learning tool, but I don't think it's meant to be. I think it shows your children(or nephews in my case) that being silly for silly sake is ok. That you can find joy in a way that makes no sense to anyone else and that's ok.
You know you've done something right Sprogling, when 10 years later, they still ask for your book. When they've become too grown up for everything else, but they still wanna laugh at this.
This book is full of made up silly animals that is a fun read for little ones and everyone. The animal names are silly and young children will have fun repeating them over and over. This is a great anytime read book, bedtime or story time. Get ready to laugh at the craziness and remember through the laughter there is the alphabet. I picked a few animals to tempt you with. J is for Jellyburras who live in rainbows. P is for Polarhogs who come from the South Pole and now live in hot countries. Z is for Zaptoad. You have to use rubber gloves to handle him. If you think the names are funny, you should see the wonderful illustrations that go along with them. I borrowed this book on a Kindle Unlimited website and so can you.
A trustworthy title--silly. Layout is good. Clear text with colour illustrations of made up creatures. Not a good way to learn because young kids can't differentiate between truth and fallacy. This book is probably better suited to a confident reader who is looking for a fun way to stimulate an artistic imagination.
This was so silly it was nonsensical. I didn't care for it that much and it didn't hold my 4 year old granddaughter's attention. The illustrations are nice but not overly special. Those who like silliness and mish-mashed animals might like this for sharing more than I did.
I found this book, as an adult, to be quite funny and ingenious. Would NOT be something I would read to children to teach them; however as long as the child already knew the proper animals, I would then find this would be incredibly hysterically funny!
I read this book to my son after finding it on Kindle. It is so cute and whimsical. And, the second book is out and Im downloading it now. We started reading this book a year ago and it never gets old to him. All of the clever animals and he still asks for it a year later. ♡
I really enjoyed this one. I even read parts of it to my 17 year old son because he wanted to know what was so funny. I even had him laughing. Kids will love it.
Garbage in Garbage out. Why confuse young children with fictional creatures. The kids I got this book for told me it stupid and didn't want to read it.
