My goal this year was to buy less read more free. That being said I have suffered through some novels that I should've been paid to read. I was so excited throughout "The Dragon King and I". A truly enjoyable read. Great storyline. Perfect happily ever after. Amazing imagery. The BEST new author I've read this year. Do yourself a favor and read on. I can't wait to read the rest!

This was a hard one to rate because the premise was so, so good. Who doesn't like turning fairytales on their head?

I think it's a perfect case of it could probably have been a really great story if only it had passed through the hands of a great editor. I don't mean for grammar and spelling, for the most part I noticed nothing too stand-out there that I can recall, but definitely for content. There were a lot of confusing transitions, jump forwards in time without explanation, inconsistencies e.g. . I also think that there was a little too much emphasis on the gore in some places, I like blood and guts in paranormal stories as much as the next person but, I don't know, it just felt deliberately overdone in places here. I also found that

It was a decent read, but I just felt more like a decent first draft that a final book.

This is one confusing book.

This story is about a girl with a sky high level of pheromones. Prblematic? You could say that. This is her story of trying to break a blessing slash curse. It also became a story of her finding her true love.

I cannot tell you how many times I had to go back to the previous pages before fully understanding what had happened in this story. It involves many creatures and many fairytale characters, so it's confusing as hell. I think I got a whiplash just by trying to place the characters (which fairytale they came from). There were also a few disgusting scenes (yeeesss!!) which don't really belong in fairytales, so they surprised me.

The action parts were pretty good, albeit weird at times.

I think my main problem here stems from the fact that the transitioning from one scene to another is just oh so fast. There were also some things that were introduced, but not really. I know, I know.. I sound confused even to myself. haha!

Anyway, I guess I could also say that I was a bit entertained and that's all there is to it.

Fantastic!! A delightedly twisted fairy tale.

A good book takes you away from the stress of reality. Well this one takes you to a whole different level.

This book takes you to a whole new world, filled with a slightly confused heroin, a super sexy and mysterious hero who's not "a knight in shining armor" but so so so much more.
Its sweet, funny, heartbreaking, shocking with so many twists and turns that you don't know which way is up.
With all the details needed and given to create this world you would think it would be easy to get lost or bogged down in the details, that is absolutely the opposite of what happens in the book the way Adrianne gives the details is well played out and feels very natural.

I loved this book not only for the great story but for how well it is written - in a way that is easy and effortless to read even with all the intricacies of this wonderfully created world.

terrible. I cannot believe the average rating is that high. I quit barely into it bc one page she had a lunch and the next she is saying she hasn't had anything since cake the night before. sometimes I will push thru the beginning since not all great books start out great but if the author can't even pay enough attention as to when she last fed her heroine why am I expected to pay attention at all. maybe I misread. it's seems a weird thing for an editor to miss. regardless, it was too terrible to bother with.

This is a grand treasure with fantasy, fairytales upgraded and saucily dirtied, and... a... DRAGON!!!!

Alexandria is a modern American version of a fairytale princess: beautiful, rich and cursed. A man dies in the beginning while trying to retrieve her umbrella, but one night, something pounds and scratches at her door, whispering that he can smell her. She ignores the freak on the other side of the door, but when her poor neighbor tries to intervene and gets ripped apart because of it, she decides she's had enough with her curse killing people and let's her friend Rachel coax her into seeing a psychic. However, she arrives late to the appointment and is told by the assistant that because of that, she is considered an 'oath breaker'. The psychic she was supposed to see is a powerful witch, and when a meeting is not met between two magical beings, the contract involving the psychic's help is thus void.

Rude thing say what?

Alex is first dumbfounded at the talk of magic, and worse yet when Flo tells her that they aren't human. They. As in Alex isn't human, either. However, she tucks it away to think about later and tells her how desperate she is for help, and after a while, Flo gives her a name: Seraphim.

I was serious on the desperate part. Right after leaving the psychic's residence, she goes to the address given to her and is confused at the sight of the strip club, Hungry Kitty. It's pretty dead, and when she sits in one of the stripper's sections, she silently notes the way the woman reminds her of a fae before she asks for Seraphim, only to then be told that the woman doesn't like to talk to people. She goes around the club asking the other workers, and out of stress, accidentally gives a right hook to one of the waitresses. She gets body slammed a second later by a huge ass bouncer only to be saved by the stripper she first met. Cause, and I'm quoting the stripper, 'What are Fairy Godmothers for?'

Seraphim the Stripper (I love her XD) is her assigned FG, but believe me when I say that she's slightly psychotic. She accidentally burns Alex out of anger at her missing her appointment but quickly heals it right back up. Unlike the fairy godmothers we hear about in children's books, Seraphim, like other FGs, are witches charged to redeem themselves by taking up the fairy's work of helping out families. Now, the fairies were wiped out by the Black Widows, women who killed everything and anything because of their high on dark power. Some witches who take on the now deceased faries' charges take on the fairy's name so there's no confusion. So.... for example, when the real fairy Seraphim died, the new "Seraphim" took on her name. So who is this crazy witch? Maleficent. From Sleeping Beauty. X3 Imagine Alex's shock when she finds out that little info. And I mean, come on! Can you imagine Maleficent as a stripper working in Hungry Kitty?

Before Mal leaves her, she tells her that like a fairytale, she'll be receiving the rest of the characters before her journey can begin. You know, the knight in shining armor, Prince Charming, blah blah. Mal then disappears, as she's only able to stay in her world between Twixt and Twain (12 to 12), and Alex returns home. A knock on her door announces the first player, Sam, but he isn't what she's expecting, though their first moment is awwweeeeeeesoooomeely adorable ^_^.

You can imagine what was going on in Sam's mind when she asked him, the dragon, if he were the knight in shining armor. XD Oh, the irony in that. <3 From here on then, their adventure to get all the ingredients is one novella in itself after the other. I won't go into all the adventures because then I'd never get to my homework (T_T) but "Prince Charming" does come along, only to turn out to be the major douchbag villain-!!!!!

Another thing. During one of their adventures, she was brutally attacked in the Goblin's Market by mobs of creatures, so Sam stayed back to act as a distraction. Mal helps her find a way to get back to go and get him, and after seeing for herself that Sam had managed to destroy thousands of the market's inhabitants, she meets the dragon face-to-face, and gets her guy back. Alex eventually comes to realize that Sam was sent by Mal to act as the last ingredient, but he says that he'd been willing. He wants to die, because his brain tumor is weakening him, and with every moment that he grows weaker, a member of his tribe dies off trying to sustain him, their alpha. It's a horrible ending for them, but Alex won't deny a dying man's logical wish, so she instead tries to cherish the time she has left with him. However, a year has passed back in her world, and when she gets told this, one of her major worries is how her mother will react.

Now, her mother is a very... er, special woman. Married several times after each husband died, Danielle Woodrow comes off as cold and a cruel beauty who gets what she wants. She tries many times to get Alex to go to dinner and meet a nice doctor (yet another matchmaking trap) and just- well, in general, get her daughter to want a "better life" for her lonesome self. She's a Southern woman who detests Rachel, her black friend, and just has a sharp edge about her. This woman once told the police that her daughter had been kidnapped and sold to traffickers by a Hispanic, when in reality Alex had slept over a girlfriend's house and had just forgotten to tell her. If you're wondering, Rosalie never spoke to her again. When they need to get a genie, Sam takes her to someone he knows who could help. However, he takes her to her mother's home.

Her mom's a Black Widow. Needless to say, her mother helps her out because she's her daughter. However, when they go into the house, it's a complete mess from when she first remembered it; busy, filled with workers and light. The mansion's been unkempt, darkened, and filled with a tension that has the real Seraphim (you'll understand when you READ it) saying 'Go back, go back!' They come across vines in one section of the house, and then Alex sees a body hanging by them.

Rachel.

She's horrified at the sight of her friend, and only a twitch of her hand tells her that she's still alive. Now, a year's passed since Danielle spoke to her daughter over the phone, so imagine her rage and worry over her daughter when she couldn't find her. So, she takes it out on Rachel. Because of her, her baby is missing. Because of Rachel 'the oath breaker', who had promised her that she would get her daughter help via psychic, Alex now has to go through all this shit. This is what I'm assuming goes through her mind, but overall, crazy bitch just doesn't like oath breakers.

Rage at her mother fills Alex, but nothing compares to what she feels next when the music, music she knows is being played by her mother, is played louder and the vines holding up her friend starts to move, making her friend dance like a lifeless doll on strings.

Okay, right there. Right there! The scene was so eerily painted and thought out that I got the shivers. It was so disturbing and frightening and- aaaahhhh!!! I might have this backwards, but it was because the author thought up such a horrifying scene that she raked in brownie points from me. LOVE IT! I mean, it sucks and I feel bad for poor Rachel, but still, that scene- *shivers*. Alex and Sam sit down with Danielle, and Alex notices that the vines are actually a part of her mother, and that she's using Rachel's blood to upkeep her youthful appearance. It disgusts Alex to no end, and yet during the entire conversation, her mother only wants the best for her. She gives her a spell when Alex needs it for the genie, though she has to promise to let her mother teach her the Black Widow ways. Danielle is a pretty crazy and dark-as-hell bitch, but at the same time, I love her because she's still a mother first to Alex. Don't get me wrong, though, I mean she tells her daughter, "Remember what we (I) do to oath-breakers, Alexandria," which is basically threatening her to keep her word about apprenticing under her, but even that doesn't bother me too much because Danielle personally doesn't like oath-breakers, and she accepts no exceptions for that, which I like (though it'd seriously suck for anyone who tried to be an exception).

In the end, Alex gets all of her ingredients. Yes, all of them. The genie they summon ends up killing Sam, but once she has all of the ingredients and gets drunk on power, Seraphim (the real one) comes up again and tells her to choose her new life, a life without the curse. However, Alex can't live without Sam, so she chooses him. She is in control of her curse, now that she's embraced it, and uses the genie to heal Sam another heart. They live happily ever after.

A few things I didn't mention: Alex refused to leave Rachel behind with her crazed mother, but Mal had shown up and transformed into her dragon form to duke it out with Danielle before snatching Rachel away. FYI- Rachel's under a sleeping spell. Oh, and Sam's second in command, Diedric, was supposed to come and kill Sam if too many of their people died off, but he never showed up. And finally, Mal's been getting cranky, saying she has other stuff to do and can't always come at Alex's beck and call. Soooo let's see who we have here:

Rachel (damsel under a sleeping spell)
Diedric (dragon)
Maleficent (no need for explanation)

Any of this ring a bell? It's another setup for a book (YAY!). OH! Another thing that the book tells you at the end is that Alex has a stepbrother who was cursed by Danielle to be a frog after witnessing her rip out and eat his father's heart. However, when her powers started to deplete, the curse withered down to him only being a frog at night. Now, this epilogue is about her stepbrother coming to Seraphim for help, but he'd done it when Alex had arrived at the strip club that first day. He's the frog!!!!! :D ..... but I suppose I shouldn't even bother mentioning it since you wouldn't understand unless you read it. T_T

Anywho, I loved this book a lot. It had a dragon and a lot of fairytales/fantasy stuff that I just love to gobble up. Alex was hilarious with a pretty good head on her shoulders, and I liked that she took everything very well. She even took the news about her mother fairly well. Basically, she didn't break down and cry and do nothing. Sam was totally adorable but still had that sexy bad boy edge because of the dragon he tries to control when in her world (apparently our world is full of evil that affects all the magical peeps...hmm). Of all the villains, Danielle is simple #1 though I am LOVING Maleficent and her role in all of this. XD All the characters developed quite nicely for me, and I was just thoroughly entertained by everything.

It was a great read! I recommend this to adults, but not to those who don't like sex (O.o no judgement here) or scary things that go bump in the night.

Happy Reading! :D

*Warning: might contain a spoiler or two...*

Pretty girl = damsel. Damsel = distress. Distress = need rescuing by "Prince". Got it? Good. This is a modern spin on a classic fairy tale.

Alexandria Greyson had a curse placed on her when she was born. She can't walk down the street without a guy offering to help her with something or another, and it usually ends with someone dying. Let me tell you while no one has ever died offering to help me (that I know of) it is kind of annoying that just because we're women guys think we're helpless.

Now don't get me wrong, it's polite to offer assistance. What is NOT polite is insisting or not letting a woman do something for herself. But this particular story is just that. Guys fall all over Alex, and I mean literally. No one ever wants her to love, they want sex. Violently. Like an animal. Literally. And to kill for her or even kill her just so no other male can have her. If you're a woman in this world you probably have a feeling that if there weren't laws against such things, that kind of cave man behavior would still be happening.

Finding her Fairy Godmother-yes really- Alex is told things she must do to proceed with a quest that will remove the curse. One of them is the heart of a dragon, which she finds indirectly via her helper, Sam.

Her mother seems eccentric and annoyingly pushing her toward finding a husband. Hey ladies, sound like anyone else's mom here? LOL. It seems as though she's just your typical mom, until you learn just what she REALLY is.

Her mother really IS wicked, her fairy godmother is a few fries short of a happy meal, "Prince Charming" -who's supposed to be immune to the curse - tries to attack her, and the only man she lets in to her heart is the only one who really can help save her. He also happens to be the one that has to sacrifice...

I loved the part about the "choice" Alex had to make. I'm not sure I would have been wise enough to make the choice she did. I also didn't know that dragons represented rebirth, so I was happy to learn that. It took on a whole new meaning.

What I also enjoyed about this book is the way it tells what it's like to be a woman in this world. Albeit it's facetious, the point is still made.

~ 2.5 The Dragon King and I Stars ~

The Dragon King and I is book one in the Fairest of Them All series by Adrianne Brooks. This is my first time reading Ms. Brooks and I’m not sure what to make of this one. I’m a little confused and conflicted. A little surprised I finished it, since it had so much weirdness too it.

The Dragon King and I gives us a different spin on fairy tails. I think the whole series is a bunch of fairy tails, but it is all completely befuddling. It felt like the author was not sure where to go with this, which fairy tails to entertain, and what supernatural creatures to have. It was a hodgepodge of weirdness. It got to be a little to weird at times. I also noticed that the transformation from one scene to another is fast and things where introduced, but not really. If you understand what I mean. Also at one point the character said she had a lunch and then on the next page she is saying she hasn’t had anything since cake the night before. Uh, I think someone forgot to edit this. So it just adds more to the confusing atmosphere.

As for the characters I’m a little confounded. Alexandria Greyson, Alex, is cursed or is it blessed? She has became a hermit. When her friend offers her a way to get help, she does not take her up on it until it’s to late, which leads her to a fairy godmother of sorts and a quest. Uh, this girl has so many panic attacks and I just wanted to throttler her at times, she acted more like a little child then a grown women. Sam, our dragon was a likable character. I would have liked more character development and background on him. As for the growing relationship between Alex and Sam I did not feel the attraction between them and this story falls into the ‘instalove’.

I was mildly entertained enough to finish The Dragon King and I. I’m conflicted in whither I want to read more or not. This one left me going, what the ……

Alexandria Greyson, Alex, seems to be cursed. She has to take her college classes online, had to quit her job and she rarely leaves her apartment. Why? Well, if she tries to walk down the street, suddenly men are everywhere asking her if she needs help, offering to carry her bag, her umbrella...basically trying to do anything they can to make her happy. At some point, several years before the start of this story, she had seen a Palmist who mentioned something about her being cursed. Sigh. This leads her best friend, Rachel, to hand deliver a business card for a psychic who would be able to help her. As long as she went at a specific time. Well, Alex doesn't do anything the way she's expected to so she doesn't show up until it's way after the appointment. This leads her to a stripper, then to her Fairy Godmother and on a Quest. No, it's not for the Holy Grail, go watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail if that's what you want. This is a different kind of a quest, with strange, paranormal fairy tale characters.

I really liked Sam (our dragon) and Alex when she wasn't having a panic attack. Her Fairy Godmother was cool, certainly not the kind we see in old fairy tales. I like the story a lot. I laughed at certain parts and I enjoyed the fairy tales being brought into the modern age. Wow! Alex's mother was a piece of work, no she wasn't an 'evil stepmother'. It was a good ending and Ms. Brooks left it open to either more stories added as a series or at least more stories in this universe.

Now. All through the book were words that are spelled correctly but aren't supposed to be used in the sentence I was reading. For example, in the Epilogue at 98%:

"He'd loved the thought of having someone knew to call family and at first Danielle had been like a dream come true." Really, that should read NEW not KNEW. There were things like this sprinkled throughout the story.

Yes, I actually want to find out what happened to Alex's friend Rachel. And I very much want to find out what happened to Sam's Second. I just hope Ms. Brooks and the Publisher will be more careful about content editing.

I quite liked it, it was a nice twist to fairy tales that I really enjoyed.
But it could have been a bit longer: things just jumped ahead a little bit. One second she decides she's killing the dragon, the next his penis is inside her. Which was great, don't get me wrong!
And how could she not see that he was a dragon all along?
How did she not know about magic all her life if her mother wasn't even human? What IS up with her mother anyway.
And a bit too many obscure moments, or 'acid trips' as the author calls it. Being inside the flaming body of a dragon for a year is pushing it isn't it.

Just found that things weren't as slow or as well explained/thought through as I like.

It wasn't a bad read at all, but lacked a little something to get me to read the next book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Alexandria Grayson is a product of a spell gone wrong, it turned into a curse. Enter Maleficent the stripper.... no wait, that's her fairy godmother. In order to break the curse Alexandria is going to have to go on a quest. But like every good story, you need characters.

Enter Sam the motorcycle driving, extremely hot dragon shifter. But is he going to be her prince charming or the last thing she needs to break a curse that is getting more and more dangerous.

Adrianne Brooks did a great job twisting the fairy tales and the standard fairytale characters in this story. I hope she comes out with another one!

3 1/2 stars

A strange, amusing, creative story that plays with the elements of fairy tales & pop culture as the main characters go on a quest to save the heroine from her strange curse/ability that draws men to her with frightening devotion & often dire consequences. This world is filled with magic, dragons, goblins, witches, genies & more. Different, felt a bit long, complex at points but also funny & interesting.

"Cinderella’s godmother would have owned this curse. This curse would have been her bitch by now."

Meet Alex, a girl who can attract men surround her and they will start acting like her Romeo which is for me not that bad for a girl who thinks has the worse curse ever. The problem of having this gift is some men will just die for her, literally die for her and this, of course, upsets her and ended up not going outside.
With the help of her friend Rachel, she was forced to see a witch so she can get rid of her so-called curse. However, it did not go well because she has to complete all the ingredients in removing the curse.
As the fairytale goes there must be three main characters in the story: the damsel, the knight and the villain. Her godmother introduces her to this guy who apparently will just accompany her on her magical journey; his name is Sam.

"He had a strong face: broad forehead, an aquiline nose, and a wide, full mouth that looked like it smiled as easily as it spouted lies. He had two small freckles that fascinated me. Just two. One sat along the top right side of his upper lip, and the second one mirrored the first, except it was on his bottom lip."

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in the name than the description of this character. I thought magical beings should have this weird names or even kick ass names, right? But Sam?
I know from the beginning that he will be THE KNIGHT because naturally they would not introduce him in the middle of the story and the way the author described him is just something that readers will immediately pick up or know that this is him already.
It was a funny part when he introduced himself to Alex. There is no chemistry or whatsoever, but fascination. Alex gift is not affecting him. Apparently, he is just the guide man and will help her find the ingredients and her knight throughout her magical adventure.

“Well, then consider me your guide to all things magical. I’m sort of like a cheat sheet. Fairytales for Dummies.”

And apparently, Alex is the Dummy, lol! Because she doesn't know that magical being or curses existed in her world and thought that she was just an average human with a curse.
I gave this story three stars only not because I didn't like the storyline but because
the two main characters didn't have any chemistry at all
Some chapters felt like it was written in a rush kind of way. Lack of information and imagination
Story is too short for this type of genre
Did not excite me at all
However, the things that I like about the story are:
The idea of making the fairytale characters in real life (human) and mixing them which I think is good
I like the characters, especially the godmother who was shockingly someone we thought was the most notorious witch. It surprises me how the author twists the story of Maleficent
Some chapters were hilarious, especially when Alex and Sam first met 👍🏽
I love the cover! 😍
It could be better, and I am hoping that the next part will be much better as I already read the epilogue. I am excited to read the next one. Despite giving this three stars, I still like it. This is the first instalment in the series. I believe it has only three books.
Do I recommend this? Yes, if you want to read a bit different. It was not dull and it was straightforward to understand.

RATING: 4.2/5.0

As oppose to my first three book ratings, I do know that on this particular review there are a lot of spoilers here and there (I got carried away). If it won't prevent your enjoyment on reading the book, go ahead and read my review. If not, I just warned you okay? No hard feelings.

OVERALL:
As I said at the start, I do get carried away on this review. Note that this is my own opinion colored by my likes and dislikes and we might not share the same opinion about it. You might get the impression that there are a lot of flaws/crappy things about the book based on my comments, but no (case in point: my rating). It is very engaging. The story has many facets to it that it didn't bore me at all. I didn't want to put it down in fact. It is a mash of fairy tales that has a new great flavor to it. The author is one amazing writer! I would definitely recommend this one, even to those who are not fans of fairy tales just to get a reaction. That's how amazing it is.

Good reads to all! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
