A sailor with a wife? Yeah! This is a very good story of battles and intrigue upon the sea. It was fun, and there was romance -- not erotica smut -- but romance, and written by a guy! Definitely worth the read and I am so pleased this will be a trilogy.

I had the pleasure of reading Randy Mixter's Summer's Passing a few months ago, and was delighted to see the re-emergence of two of the characters therein in his new novel, Scarlet and Gold. More exciting than that, this novel is actually book one of The Pirate Wars Trilogy so I can only anticipate more swashbuckling adventures to come!

Scarlet and Gold is fast paced and frantic, with action scene after action scene. However, Mixter manages to weave in a cast of interesting and three dimentional characters along the way, which only adds to the tension when we discover there is trechery abound in this gripping little novel.

I wouldn't get too bogged down in the fact that 'oh, it's pirates'. I can't say I've ever read anything remotely 'pirate-y' before, but I will most certainly be doing so again. In a certain way the book had pantomime elements to it, with a brave and handsome hero, a feisty heroine, a couple of comedic characters and a whole host of 'goodies' you could root for, and clearly defined 'baddies' who you loved to loathe!

I really enjoyed this read and cannot wait to hear more about Rachel Cain and Morgan Reid in future.

I've read several of Randy Mixter's books and to date, have not been disappointed. Rachel and Morgan are first in Summer's Passing and I liked them then, so having them in Scarlet and Gold was exciting, Morgan is adventurous and Rachel is all lady !!!! Lots of action and the plot twists had me going... had to find out where the treachery was coming from.. The sword fights - you can see them happening the way Randy describes them as well as the Pirate ships.... and Rachel, lady that she is, is a fighter when she needs to be and yet, stays a lady. I like how he keeps her femininity while she is fighting and protecting ... Wasn't sure I would like a Pirate story, but again, was not disappointed in this story. I like being able to picture the happenings, and the happenings on the ships and on the island, with the fortress, he describes them so you can see them in your mind's eye. This was a very good read, exciting and some parts funny. An enjoyable read.. Looking forward to the sequel ...

From when I was a little girl, pirates have always intrigued me. I remember winning a book voucher in grade school and getting a book on shipwrecks along the South African coast. I didn't believe that there were pirates in real life (today I know better...just look off the coast of Somalia) but that didn't detract from the fact that I thought they were really interesting. So when I got this as a freebie on Bookbub I got it, not expecting that it would be worth much...I really enjoyed it!

Scarlet And Gold ~ Grip and Go!

Author Randy Mixter has done it again! He has written a story, but not just any story, a pirate wars trilogy of adventure that holds no boundaries!
Scarlet And Gold is a deadly- daring, adventurous, love story centered on a seemingly fearless husband and wife team. The wife, Rachel Cain is of a devotion like non-other. She has prepared herself to follow her husband, Morgan Reid, who seems to be chased by something far more evil than most can comprehend. This lurking fear keeps Morgan and Rachel chasing one adventure after another, and barely escaping each deception of betrayal.
On the dangerous Eastern Seas amongst pirate wars, they start out on a rescue mission. Little did they know this mission holds double-crosses on both sides!
Scarlet And Gold is bound in adventure; romance, with a touch of sorcery that is eluding.
I highly recommended Scarlet And Gold written by Randy Mixter, as well as, the introduction to Rachel Cain and Morgan Reid in, Summer’s Passing.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Scarlet And Gold. The main characters are an adventurous husband and wife team who seem to attract wickedness all about them, especially with the pirates and those in government.

This is a fast paced read chalked full of secrets, betrayal, love, and loyalty. My copy of Scarlet And Gold will not be sitting dormant on the book shelf as it will be passed onto to other family members who read.

This book is a guilty pleasure. It's like a second slice of cheesecake, you know you shouldn't, you know it's not good for you, that there's no nutritional value whatsoever, that it's just fluff, sugar and fat, but you enjoy it nonetheless.

When I was 7 or 8 a friend had a pirate-themed birthday party, at night, after we'd spent all day chasing each other and stuffing our faces with pirate cake, they showed us all a pirate movie, Errol Flynn or something, I can't remember, but during the reel changes (yes, I know, I'm old) we would grab our plastic swords and fight each other to the death in the patio, replaying the exploits of the heroes on screen. It was a wonderful day, one of the best birthday parties ever, attested by the fact that I can still remember it almost 40 years later.

This book is like that. It's a Sunday evening playing pirate. Yes, it's cliche and predictable and it sometimes makes you roll your eyes, but it's a good time. It's an 8 year old kid channelling Errol Flynn. It's Calvin as spaceman Spiff.

It's got some mistakes and could have used a little more editing, but if you can switch off your brain for a bit and just go with it, it's a lighthearted good time. It's a summer blockbuster movie with lots of popcorn, and it sure as he'll beats sitting through a Michael Bay movie.

In concept, I like Scarlet and Gold. Pirates, gold, swashbuckling, even a swashbuckling wife. The sword fighting is fine and the characters are generally well drawn. My problem was with the location. The world seems to be a fantasy world similar to our own, but for example, there is a cross that glows when danger is near. The world gets absolutely no backstory.

Names are similar to real places (Cambridge, Marbella, Romany) which makes things more confusing. Plus everywhere seems to be a couple of days sails from everywhere else. There is no sense of scale, or countries.

The fighting was fun but the world needs work.

Oh my goodness I tried so hard with this book. I just couldn't get into it. The story had such potential and I just couldn't get into the characters or the storyline. Super disappointed.
