Have you ever had an imaginary friend?
I did, his name was Adam.
I met him when I was seven.
He was eight.
He became my best friend.
My only friend, for eight years.
It was a bond that became something more.
A decision separated us.
I haven't given up.
How could I?
He's the only man I've ever loved.

Author's note: I don't consider this a paranormal romance, just some good old-fashioned fiction where anything is possible; even falling in love with a boy nobody else can see.

A very engaging and emotional ya romance read❣️

I fell in love with those two kids of 7 & 8 y.o. who accidentally met at the lake and had a beautiful relationship while growing up together, until the age of 16!

Anna and Adam’s connection was wonderful and my heart was breaking for both of them, because they could only interact with each other through speech and eyesight.
Anna was the only person who could see and talk to Adam.

At the age of 16, there was an unexpected turn and then the story picked up 4 years later.

It was well written and developed, I could feel everything Anna and Adam were going through.
Anna’s friends, Haley and Jeremy, were amazing, supportive and good hearted.

The story had 24 chapters, all from Anna’s pov, plus an extra one at the end with Adam’s pov.
Unfortunately, that extra one didn’t add anything to the story, because it was a replica of the 24th chapter, only by his pov.
In general, there were some parts that needed further development, as well as the ending.

Thank you veronica(ver)terisa for bringing it to my attention! 🥰

BOOK: Beginnings
AUTHOR: J.M. Sevilla
GENRE: Young Adult Romance
POV: First Person - Female
TYPE: Standalone
RATING: 3 Stars!

NAME/AGE: Adam Kenward - 16/20 | Anna Monroe - 15/19
PUBLISHED: September 12, 2013

I've been yours from the moment we met.” He stepped closer so our faces were inches apart and closed his eyes. "I try to imagine what you would feel like to touch. The smell of your hair. Your lips on mine."
When he opened his eyes, they were full of longing. I felt my lips part and my breathing got heavier. My entire body ached for him to hold me.
"I'm yours Annie, always."

I feel like I'm outgrowing this genre - by this genre I mean YOUNG ADULT . It's been so long since I read a good YA book. So, before actually starting this book, I had a feeling this would be cute (and honestly that's as high as my hopes were because I've been burned by a J.M. Sevilla book before!) but by 30% I had mixed feelings about this. BEGINNINGS was an unexpected surprise. But a good surprise. It was short, sweet and full of angst. Reading about finding your one true soulmate is my guilty pleasure.

I loved how Annie and Adam's relationship progressed from friends to lovers. It was such a gradual shift but it was so well done. The chemistry, everything, was just sweet and awkward and perfect. You really felt their connection, their understanding of each other, and that more than anything made this book delightful. They were just adorable together and had this multi-layered relationship that added more substance to the overall story. They were truly destined to be together. I loved the originality of the story. The writing was very straight-forward. They were some mundane details that stretched on, but they didn't take away from the story.

I wish you could kiss me too. I want you to hold me so close to your body that I can't tell where I end and you begin. I want to run my fingers through your hair and trail kisses down your neck. I want these things so badly that I can almost taste you.

I first half was honestly a solid 4 star read. However, in my opinion, the rest of the book didn't really live up to the first half of the story and felt more average with cliché patterns... The way the story wrapped up felt flat and a bit disappointing. The plot was a little predictable and the straight-forward writing didn't have a lot of impact, it felt clinical. I had a good time with the novel but it’s true that after the end, I was expecting more of the story and something was missing for me. Maybe because it was mature Young Adult and I wanted a little more romance. I would still recommend this for lovers of Young Adult.

Annie, I need you to know that no matter what happens, I love you. I will always love you. Nothing can break the bond we share.

I was actually very intrigued with this book, because I have read a previous book from this author and loved it from beginning to end and I thought let's try another one and Why the hell not? So I purchased it.

J.M. Sevilla you have done it again! (Made a fan for life).

I absolutely LOVED this book! It intrigue me and I loved the twist. Totally 5 star worthy. The characters are likable (Annie/Adam and Jeremy/Haley). I laughed, I cried and I'm so happy I made the purchase. It was thoroughly enjoyable. :)

It's a big thumbs up!description

4.5 STARS for a sweet story that i couldn't put down.

Genre: Young Adult/New Adult.
Cover: 9/10 – fits what's inside
Writing: 8/10
Heroine: 8/10
Hero: 8/10
Amount of humour: 4/10
Amount of jealousy: 5/10
Hotness: 1/10
Romance: 8/10
Ending: 8/10
Extra book Details: HEA. Stand-alone.

BLURB: Anna's parent's died in a car crash when she was just a girl, forcing her to live with her aunt, uncle and cousin.
When she's 8 years old, they go on holidays together. There she meets Adam who's a little older. Adam is amazed by her. Everyone ignores him apart from Anna, she can actually see him.

'I went everywhere with her, and we did everything together. She became my everything.'

Anna and her 'imaginary friend' Adam become inseparable, causing Anna to become an outcast. Now, 8 years on they begin to realise their true feelings for one another, they are desperate to hold each other, to touch...

”I want you to hold me so close to your body that I can't tell where I end and you begin. I want to run my fingers through your hair and trail kisses down your neck. I want these things so badly I can almost taste you.” ~ Adam

But tragedy strikes.

I really loved this book, it was totally sweet. The first half is Young Adult, the second half is more New Adult, not a lot of steam really. I would recommend this to YA lovers though.

I loved it when Adam got jealous.
I felt Adam lean over and rest his hands on my desk, bringing his lips to my ear. “Yes, I'm jealous. Very jealous.” He was staring down at me with such passion that it caused all the air to escape my lungs.'

I loved the adventures they went on, I loved the side characters; her cousin was a hyper girly-girl, the new guy was like Joey from Friends and her uncle was a lovable push-over. The author did really well in writing from a 16 year old's POV.

I was grinning a lot, I suffered heartbreak, I had a few 'Oh shit no!' moments, a couple of chuckles and almost tears. I know a book is good when it can get emotional reactions out of me.

Genre: YA romance with supernatural elements
Cliffy? No, HEA.

Sensuality: PG

This is a debut novel that is not without problems but I really liked it for its different twist. It had a whimsical quality and was like a cross between the movies HARVEY and MADE IN HEAVEN (1987).

The bookblurb pretty much tells it like it is. Orphan "Annie" meets a boy that only she can see and talk to when she is 7. For the next 8 yrs, he is always with her and is the only friend that she needs. The first half (which is the better half) is set in high school; the second half is set in college.

Some people may call this a paranormal romance but I don't even like PNR and I liked this. I guessed exactly what the boy really was early on so I found it believable enough. That is why I would call it a YA romance with a tinge of supernatural.

A wonderful story, totally different from my usual type of read. We meet Anna, a lonely 8 year old living with her Uncle and Aunt after her parents have been killed in a car crash. She has a cousin her age but Anna has a hard time relating to anyone in the sadness and despair that has overtaken her life.

One day Anna meets Adam, a boy about her age, who seems to understand her and wants to be her friend. But, Anna is the only one that can see and hear Adam. This beautiful story follows their friendship over a period of several years. To discuss the story in detail would probably include too many spoilers. But it is a tender, amazing story that will warm your heart.

I loved that that at the conclusion of the book the author gives us a complete redo of the ending but from Adam's POV (the rest of the book is Anna's POV). I wish more author's would do this, it really added to the story.

The only negative I had was that sometimes the writing seemed a little too simplistic. Maybe that made sense when they were 8 years old, but at the end they are in college and the writing could have been a little more sophisticated.

But, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel good about life and can think outside the box a little.

It's a quick and sweet story but it still didn't work for me.

..... spoilers.....

Since this is a paranormal romance I thought it could be different from the usual, unfortunately it is only in the first part.
The second part is the same old same old.
H and h are separated for 4 years, she managed to wait for him even for a first kiss.
As usual H is sleeping with the mean bitch of the school.
(ok I know he doesn't remember the h, but honestly the first half of the book made me believe he could have been faithful).
No epilogue, no answers and way too much annoying push/pull.

Oh man, I wanted to write this amazing, 5 star review. I had it all planned out in my head... I wanted to say how I couldn't put the book down. I loved the characters and the unique story line.... I love how it was a little paranormal but it really isn't.... in fact the first 70% of the book was just amazing! I cried, I laughed, I felt deeply for the characters but unfortunately that changed toward the end....

Beginnings is a very unique novel that starts with 8 year old Annie. She just lost her parents and is in a depression. She now lives with her Aunt, Uncle, and cousin Haley but she is so sad. She finds life again with an 8 year-old boy Adam... problem is only SHE can see HIM. Over the years the two are together and are growing up as teenagers together, still no one can see Adam but Annie. Things change between the two and the friendship they have turns into so much more but Adam can't touch her and he doesn't even know what he is... a ghost?

I absolutely LOVED the relationship between the two. They were so in sync and knew everything there was to know about each other. They had this beautiful friendship, romance that was impossible to have.. I felt so bad for them.

Something happens to Adam and Annie doesn't see him again for years. Now in college Annie see's Adam but its different... these two soul mates are getting their second chance... or are they?

This is the start of when the book changed for me... I still loved the interaction between the two, even though it was different. I still couldn't put the book down and was dying to know what will happen between them... but towards the end everything just happened so fast and soon it was the end but it didn't even seem like the end. it just stopped. I felt like i skipped something or had a bad copy but nope. it was just that. the end. I was so intrigued by these two characters and even the minor characters Jeremy & Haley (Who i loved as well). I needed more, I felt we deserved more. I just didn't care for the ending because of how brief and quick it was. I felt cheated.....

So while I LOVED the story line and the characters I did find small errors with the story but that goes with new writers... but most of all I just wanted a better ending...

I give Beginnings by J.M. Sevilla 3.5 stars.

This book was practically EVERYTHING I hate ... hahaha
Too sweet , Too repetitive ( The last part was so annoying I skipped some of it just to finish )
I hate the stupid parties and drunks . Hate the childish games .
The characters behaved like 14 year old children .
Sorry - not for me .

This book touched me so deeply, that I don't know If I can express every emotion I felt in this review to make it justice. But, I'll try anyway :) The most beautiful prologue I ever read! The first time Adam & Annie met, the way he describe her (eyes, pain, beauty). And the bond they share since day one put me the verge of tears... Like when you feel so lost and has no hope and then, a miracle light appear and change your life forever. So many beautiful lines too: "I wanted to take away any pain she ever felt, and only bring her happiness". "...I went everywhere with her, and we did everything together. She became my everything". It brought such a joy to my heart and soul... As the book progress you can see the bond getting stronger, the friendship and love change them in every way. Make them strong and capable to face the world around. But, bad things happens, right?! And, the thing they thought will solve all the problems, don't have the effect they wished for... And then, J.M Sevilla, gives us the What If? What if that moment never happen? If you have a second chance what will happen? Do you change anything? Will be glad the way things turn out?? You will be different?? I can't answer that without saying to much about the story.... It's hard to explain this kind of love in words but, Adam can sum it up for us: "Annie meant more to me than a friend, or even a lover. It went deeper than that." These characters have a piece of my heart, the story keep playing in my mind and I know will stick with me forever. The experience it's personal, but, maybe you'll be touch like I was by them. I hope so! J.M Sevilla is my new Fave author, her writing is AMAZING and her books must be read! To finish my review a quote that explain my feelings about "Beginnings":

“There are books full of great writing that don't have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story... don't be like the book-snobs who won't do that. Read sometimes for the words--the language. Don't be like the play-it-safers who won't do that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book.”
― Stephen King

It's exactly what I'm doing with Anna & Adam's story, keep it an invaluable treasure! Happy reading!

3.5- 4 Sweet, Soul mate Stars!

At seven years old Anna loses her parent, in this time of sadness she finds a special friend who gets rid of her loneliness. The only thing is that she is the only one who can see him.As Adam and Anna grow older their feelings for each other grow and the longing to touch each other has Anna searching for answers.

Okay I went into this one blind because I absolutely loved the authors other two book I read so I had to read this one and see how it went.Going in without a clue to what the book is about has its advantages and disadvantages because well at first I was confused! I went into it thinking it would be something like marked series I don't know why! But yeah it totally wasn't like that. So I started reading this and was like..wait a minute I am so confused right now! What is going on? :O Is this a paranormal romance? whaaaaat?

Later on in the book it all came together and I was like oh phew things will be all better now and then I wanted to slap myself for speaking (thinking) too soon! But yeah in the end its all happily ever after ;)

This is a quick, cute read and after finishing it I thought wait there is more right? Because I wanted more! The only thing I had a problem with was the age of the characters, I just prefer older characters and don't usually read many YA/NA books but that's just me!

"Annie meant more to me than a friend, or even a lover. It went deeper than that."

This book is alot different from her other books, I really enjoyed the twist and how everything came together. J.M.Sevilla you are an awesome author and I can not wait to read more of your books! Get writing woman ;)

Beginnings drew me in right from the first page. Who/what is Adam? A ghost? Something else? I mean he ages so...it is odd but really interesting. I loved it from the first page and wanted to find out what is going on.

Anna first meets Adam when she is seven. She has lost her parents and is living with her cousin, aunt and uncle. She is lost and not really sure how to start living again. Then Adam finds her and they quickly become best friends. The only issue? No one else can see Adam. He doesn't remember who he is or really anything about his past. He likes Anna though and spends all his time with her. They make up code so they can speak when other people are around (so as Anna won't appear crazy).

The book picks up in high school at the beginning of the school year. Adam is always there for Anna and they are best friends. Anna is also starting to realize she has fallen for Adam, she wants to kiss him and hold his hand and everything. Only she can't. Since Adam is always there, since she is so into Adam, she kind of keeps to herself. Since no one else can see him she has to be alone to really be able to talk to him. He gets her to open up to him, to have fun and do crazy things. But she misses out on making friends and connections with other people her age.

When the school year starts there is a new kid, Jeremy. He instantly tries to befriend Anna and they do eventually become great friends. He is there for her when Adam isn't. With his help she is able to figure out who Adam is and how to hopefully make things better.

The middle part of the book got a little slow for me. Not sure why, but the four years between the start of the book and college just...I understand why Anna didn't move on after Adam left her, but at the same time it was just a bit much for me at times. When they meet again it got better for me and I enjoyed the rest of the story. You have to wonder how Anna was able to hold onto her hopes of getting Adam, her Adam, back again. She still didn't make many friends, just hanging out with Jeremy and Haley, but it all works out in the end. Really enjoyed this story. Very different storyline that was quite entertaining.

Eventually even if there were two beginnings of the story, it has to end. Couldn’t be happier that I was able to get through the end after reading it for the last eight hours. The book was promising. But you know what they say about promises – it would either come through or leave you hanging wondering what went wrong.

The book was about Anna, an 8 year old orphan who found comfort with the company of her friend Adam that only she sees. People thinks she has lost her mind that she gives no shit about as long as Adam was with her. Eventually they both fell in love with each other. Technically Adam isn’t dead yet for he was also growing just as Anna. Later in the book, they’d discover that Adam is in coma and that they had to go to his body to reconnect his soul and body somehow. My heart was slamming against my body upon reading the first few lines of chapter 11. Realizing Adam has recovered from his state of coma in a childlike mind and couldn’t remember Anna was beyond excruciating. It was a powerful scene but the moment was taken away too soon because the book was fast forward four years later.

Reading the part two of the book was like watching a bad play that your friend stars in. No matter how dull and predictable the things you see - you just sat there being a good friend that you are because you just want to support your friend and you don’t want to hurt them by not finishing their play. It was like that with the book. JM Sevilla isn’t a friend of mine nor we know each other but I support her like how I support all authors I come across. No matter how many times I wanted to drop the book, I wanted to appreciate every bit of it even if I was just reading through the characters’ lines and not paying attention to the things they have in mind. I specially didn’t pay attention to Adam’s point of view because I didn’t see and experience new or fresh from his perspective except those scenes where he had to break up with Charlotte and had to go to his family. Then that was it. Bottom line, the book was promising at the start but it just became mundane and typical at the midpart up to the last.

5 Beautiful Soul Mate Stars!

"I've been yours from the moment we met"

This story had me at the first page. I was very intrigued, I couldn't quite figure out what was going on in the beginning. And even though we do find out pretty early in the story, I was more interested in finding out the outcome.
I'm going to keep this short, I don't wanna give away the story.
This was a beautiful journey of friendship and love. I absolutely LOVED this book!!
Such a different, refreshing story!

"Now that I think about it, our story had another beginning. That moment, right there in the cafe. Annie was free of her past pain and I was free to live my life as I desired. That's when I realized our story had no ending, only beginnings"

This was the first book I read by this author, I will definitely look for more.

JUST BEAUTIFUL! <3

Quick, sweet love story. If you are looking for an easy emotional read, this is it!

Anna meets Adam at eight years old, and they basically grow up together. Only problem is no one else can see or hear him. I loved the premise of this book because as many books as I have read before, this is a totally new concept!

The characters were well developed and interesting. I would even be interested in a follow up book or maybe one with just Jeremy and Hailey. This author did a great job with this love story. Kept the pace moving and the angst to an appropriate level.

If you love sappy love stories with happy endings, this is your book!

This book was basically the YA version of one of my favorite romantic movies of all time, Just like heaven, with a little more drama so what's not to love? It had a lot of things I liked in love stories:

1. Childhood friends who fall in love twice
2. Funny best friend
3. Cute guy named Adam (I love that name)
4. DRAMA

The reasons I am taking half star away are:

1. The typos
2. The pacing of the second part, it was way too fast for me

Otherwise it was a beautiful love story, I adored it
Ps. Thank you so much Maureen for the rec

Totally loved this book! Such a beautiful love story! I was hooked from the beginning. Loved the characters. One of those books I felt like diving into and hanging out with the characters. Enjoyed reading a book with such a unique plot. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good love story. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. I would love to know more about Adam and Annie's life together!

OMG this book was so sweet! I loved it! Such a unique (not realistic but who cares) love story. Both of them never gave up, never let anyone sway them, went against all odds. I loved the loyalty and the connection they shared. True love built on being best friends. I'm all gooey inside! :)

If you are looking for a short/fast/sweet story to warm your heart I highly recommend this.

It was a sweet story, with a new idea of falling in love with your soulmate twice, however I didn't really "feel" the story and felt like I was just "reading" a story. No twist, nothing unpredictable. I felt myself skimming thru parts, including the POV from Adam. Not my favorite read from this author.

This was a great 4.5 star book for me. It was different than anything I have ever read. It wasn't hot, but it was increadibly sweet. It is the perfect read when you get sick and tired of reading the same "formula" over and over again!!!
