Matthew Harffy is the author of the action-packed series of historical novels, the Bernicia Chronicles.

Matthew’s 2020 novel, Wolf of Wessex, was his first departure from the seventh century. Taking place a couple of centuries later in the early years of the Viking Age, it tells the tale of ageing warrior, Dunston, as he tries to find a man’s vicious murderers, keep the victim’s orphaned daughter alive and uncover the dark secret that threatens to plunge the kingdom into war. The book was very well received, with The Times calling it “a treat of a book”.

His A Time for Swords series is set at the dawn of the Viking Age. It follows the adventures of monk-turned-warrior, Hunlaf, who witnesses the first attack on the monastery of Lindisfarne and feels compelled to pick up a blade and organise the defence against the Norse raiders.

Before becoming a full-time author, Matthew worked in the IT industry, where he spent most of his days writing and editing, just not the words that most interested him! Prior to that, he worked in Spain as an English teacher and translator.

Matthew lives in Wiltshire, England, with his wife and their two daughters.

This eventful historical adventure is the 3rd volume, and possibly the last one according to the author, of the "Time for Swords" series.

At the beginning of the book you'll find a well-drawn map of Hunlaf and his friends voyage to Al-Andalus, followed by a list of Place Names.

At the end of the book you'll notice a very well documented Author's Note, where the historical details concerning this story are explained by the author.

Although this story is well written, at times it becomes for me somewhat repetitive and long-winding, and that's why I've rated this book similar as its predecessor "A Night of Flames", but let me assure you that not all is doom and gloom, for the book certainly has its uplifting and delightful moments for each and everyone of us to enjoy.

The story is narrated by Hunlaf of Ubbanford, now an old monk but then a warrior/monk, and we find him and his friends and fellow warriors in the year AD796 on board Brymsteda and on their way to Al-Andalus, but before reaching Qadis they are attacked by pirates from North-Africa, and in the pirates possession a very important human cargo, which will come to the fore later on in the story.

This small battle will lead to various difficult and deadly encounters with some very treacherous and dangerous persons, namely Ahmad, Tayyib, Nadir, and most of all the Emir of Al-Andalus and his cruel reign, until finally they will able to break free from the clutches of these men and their subsequent awkward situations, and head back to their precious ship with just the one prize but no silver and the book "Treasure of Life" lost for good.

What is to follow as a whole is an action-packed historical adventure, where treasures are sought and found, but will be lost due to certain dangerous circumstances and treason, but in the end our heroes will be able to leave that place with still their lives in tact.

Very much recommended for this is very likeable addition to this series, and to anyone who likes an historical adventure with swords, heroes, villains, fire and death at the heart of it all, and that's why I like to call this latest episode: "An Enjoyable Hunlaf Adventure"!

There are a lot of excellent authors producing work in the Post-Roman (Dark Ages) Britain genre but Matthew Harffy is among the best. His work never disappoints and this book is no exception. Hunlaf sets out on an expedition to Muslim Spain in search of a mysterious book. His crew mates consist of warriors from various backgrounds-Picts, Celts, Norse. All of them are hoping for riches and adventure and they find plenty of each.
Harffy's battle scenes are graphic. No question about that. But the era he writes about was intensely brutal at times, so the scenes are not gratuitous.
If you like historical fiction, particularly Middle Ages fiction, and authors like Bernard Cornwell, you will like Matthew Harffy.

As always, the historic detail is rich and enriching. Now up to a dozen books from this author I have been privileged to read and enjoy. And yet there are more to tap into when I am able.

Firstly, wow! I have read many tales where the main protagonist survives, against all odds, everything the author can conjure up for the character to suffer, and that is certainly true in this tale. What sets this one apart from the others, at least to this humble reader, is the inner turmoil Hunlaf experiences throughout this quest for a world-changing book. An intense, emotional battle between his life as a monk, and as a warrior is one of the driving factors in this tale. Not that the gamut of emotions is limited to Hunlaf; nay, my fellow readers, the author has produced a story where the reader feels the pains, the mind-numbing anguish, and the exaltation of survival.
I've read many books where I've used the phrase 'page-turning'. A Day of Reckoning is certainly that, but even more so, it practically compels the reader to do so; daring the reader with the promise that the lack of sleep, or undone chores, is well worth the effort. 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

An interesting look at more of Dark Age Europe and the Saxon World. Just one quibble, sails weren’t typically made out of wool. Wool is WAY to heavy and becomes too matted when wet, as it becomes felt.
Sails were made of waxed linen or silk until the invention of polyester because the material was light even when wet.

A Day of Reckoning is the third book in the author’s ‘A Time for Swords’ series, the follow-up to A Time for Swords and A Night of Flames both of which I’ve read and reviewed. A Day of Reckoning could be read as a standalone as there are recaps of previous events to bring new readers up to date but if you’re a lover of action-packed historical fiction I’d recommend reading the series from the beginning.

Once again Hunlaf is both chief protagonist and narrator. Now advanced in age and becoming increasingly frail, he is setting down the details of his eventful life, one which saw him abandon his calling as a monk to become a warrior and adventurer. (Retaining the mischievous spirit of his younger self, he’s writing his memoir when he should be working on something else.)

A Day of Reckoning sees Hunlaf continue his quest for a book known as The Treasure of Life, a book which he longs to study whilst at the same time he fears has the power to corrupt minds, something demonstrated all too clearly in A Night of Flames. In fact, looking back, he now refers to it as ‘that accursed tome’. The search takes Hunlaf and his comrades to the Muslim-ruled area of the Iberian Peninsular, including the cities of Cadiz, Seville and Cordoba. There they find themselves becoming involved in a kind of 8th century arms race.

Many characters make a return appearance including the fearsome Norse warrior and master shipbuilder, Runolf Ragnarsson and – much to Hunlaf’s delight – Runolf’s daughter Revna.

As you might expect, they face many perils along the way and there are some terrific action scenes, including a battle with a pirate ship and a breathless escape from a mountain top fortress. Although we know Hunlaf will live to fight another day – although of course he doesn’t – that’s not necessarily the case for all his comrades. It’s something that weighs heavily on Hunlaf’s mind, a feeling of guilt that he has unwittingly been the cause of others’ deaths. At the same time, he’s happy to acknowledge that he’s been a bit of a lad since casting off his monk’s robe and that the thrill of battle can sometimes overwhelm him. ‘I had chosen the path of the warrior, and when called upon to fight, I was gripped by a savage abandon that made me deadly.’

A Day of Reckoning is the kind of historical fiction that grabs you by the scruff of the neck and doesn’t let go until you reach the end, slightly breathless but with the sense of having been completely immersed in another time and place. And as before, the author leaves us with tantalising glimpses of exploits Hunlaf has yet to tell us about. But will he? To borrow Runolf’s catchphrase, I guess ‘anything is possible’.

My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book.
Well written and researched engaging from first to last page, the continuing adventures of Hunlaf reliving his youth as he writes his chronicles. The third book in this excellent series but works perfectly as a standalone story. The Author is a master of this genre, and I cannot decide whether I prefer this or the Beobrand Bernicia Chronicles series, both are superb, featuring quality characters and so atmospheric and descriptive that you feel a part of the story. Lots of action sequences sometimes gruesome but always gripping riveting page turners.
Completely recommended.

Well, I finished this book in a single day. (445 pages)

I think that gives an indication of how much I enjoyed this book.

I have read all but one of Harffys novels (hurry up bookbuddies so we can read Beo 9) and what I can say, is that this is nothing like any of his other novels.

With Harffy you're guaranteed brilliant prose, dynamic characters and a story that is memorable. On top of that, this book added a little flair and it was told with a little bit more razzmatazz

I think what this book evidenced to me, is that Harffy is right in the top top tier bracket for HF. He managed to keep me completely captivated throughout.

I could share details about Hunlaf and his crew, I could even outline the story - a story I dont think any of his usual readers will expect. But I won't, firstly I'm lazy but secondly, I need you to buy this book and read it for yourself.

I really hope this isn't the last we see of Hunlaf. I could read a 100 more stories from his life

I enjoy these books in a way analogous to the way I enjoy Marko Kloos’ sci fi books. Well told tales. Vivid scenes and characters. Historical detail and richness. As I’ve said before, you’ll probably like this series if you enjoy Cornwell’s Last Kingdom books.

This fast-paced adventure novel takes the reader from the windswept Northumbrian coast to the sun-baked cities of Moorish Spain, from the palace of Charlemagne to the dungeons of Cadiz. I believe the author spent some years in Spain, and his depictions of the country have an authentic feel.
Readers who have read previous installments in this series will enjoy catching up with the crew of the Brymsteda as she gallops south over the waves. Never fear, though: readers who are new to the series will have no trouble getting up to speed. Several characters in the story are on a quest, each for something different, that motivates their journey to Spain: riches, fame, a mysterious manuscript, and the secret recipe for Greek fire, the ancient world’s most terrifying weapon. The story reaches a very suspenseful climax, with suitable levels of swordplay, blood and guts. Does our hero attain the object of his quest? Read and find out!
Here are some general comments. The crew includes a young woman who can fight like one of the boys. Her presence as a lone woman on the ship strains credulity a bit. However, she is given a watchful and warlike father, which almost makes her believable.
As a translator, I found that the author handled the problem of characters speaking different languages well (to be clear, the book is all in English). There are at least six different languages that characters in the book would supposedly have spoken. A plausible way for them to understand each other is always found. This must have taken some thought on the part of the author.
Another thing I liked was the character development, especially of the main character, Hunlaf. He is brave and daring, but he is affected by some harrowing experiences in the course of the story. This makes him more realistic and well-rounded than your average action hero.
At the beginning and end of the book, Hunlaf is an old monk recounting his adventures as a young man. There is a suggestion he may live long enough to write another chronicle of his adventures. Let’s hope so!
Thanks to the publisher, Head of Zeus, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't usually read books that take place in the Dark Age, but this was a good book, and the premise was interesting. There are plenty of action scenes, and I found that this was very adventurous and held my attention.
The character developments were well-rounded and outstanding, which made most characters feel less fictional to me.

Thank you to Head Of Zues, Matthew Harffy and Netgalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Matthew Harffy goes from strength to strength with each new novel and nothing proves this so much as his latest offering, A Day of Reckoning.

This is the third installment in his Time for Swords series following the adventures of Hunlaf, a warrior-monk who hails originally from the north of England. But if his own personal annals are to be believed, Hunlaf has an awful lot of epic journeying to far-off lands still ahead of him.

The great charm of these books for me is the twin timeline. A little in the style of Umberto Eco’s Name of the Rose, the story is told in the form of a memoir written by the “old” Hunlaf, now re-established in his calling as a monk, remembering the adventures (and misadventures) of his youth, when he was very much more warrior than monk.

This particular volume describes his escapades in 8th century al-Andalus (modern day Spain) where, by the end of that century, Muslim rule was firmly established. Hunlaf and his colourful array of crew mates have been co-opted into a mission for the master scholar Alwhin - an Englishman in service to Karolus Magnus (that's Charlemagne to you and me) - who, besides his more intellectual pursuits, operates as spy-master to the great Frankish king.

Things are afoot down south which Alwhin needs to understand and if necessary thwart. To this end, he sends with Hunlaf and his crew, a field operative who would not disgrace the pages of a John Le Carré novel. A Frank called Giso (who is a genius creation by the way), as able as he is disingenuous (and ruthless). In other words, the perfect spy.

That their mission for Alwhin coincides with Hunlaf’s own obsession with finding a Manichean text called The Treasure of Life - a book of strange corrupting power (another nod to Eco perhaps?) - together with the promise of heaps of silver, means that Hunlaf and his fellow warriors are only too happy to oblige.

But of course things go wrong from the start. And the plot soon begins to twist and coil like the Midgard Serpent of Northern nightmare rising from the deep. With the threat of a new and deadly weapon falling into the hands of Charlemagne’s (and Christendom’s) implacable enemy, the stakes become impossibly high. And if Hunlaf and his friends are to destroy this threat, win themselves a bit of silver, AND find the book…. Well, a lot has to go right.

Needless to say, in Harffy’s capable hands, the unfolding of these diverse quests is woven together with such skill and intricacy that for the last hundreds pages or so the novel is impossible to put down, building as it does to a feverish pitch of action and excitement.

Throughout though, the little known world of 8th century al-Andalus is brought to life in handsome style. A bit of interesting historical counter-factual is thrown in for good measure - what IF the Moors had obtained a weapon of the power and invincibility of Roman/Greek fire? The course of European history might have run very differently. Together with Hunlaf’s own wrestling of conscience between the sincere faith of his more monkish moments and the berserker joy he revels in during the heat of battle. All of these combine to create a wonderfully rich and gripping story of action, intrigue and adventure.

Throw in Harffy’s cast of larger-than-life characters and you have yourself the makings of a truly memorable tale.

A Day of Reckoning illuminates the darkest of ages with the bright and visceral flare of Roman Fire.

Brilliantly conceived. Masterfully executed. Confirming Harffy as the gold standard of historical action adventure.

Thanks to Head of Zeus and Netgalley for the ARC.

I fell in love with Hunlaf in the first book and this third book of the series definitely cements him as a favorite historical character of mine. A Day of Reckoning continues Hunlaf's journey after the book, The Treasure of Life, along with the crew of the Brymsteada as they journey to the Iberian Peninsula. This is a terrific, fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable tale filled with sea battles, betrayals, and of course, deadly fights. I love that the story took us to Muslim Spain and the descriptions of the cities, foods and culture were marvelous and really made you feel the place. The new characters in the story add so much to the intrigue, especially Giso, as you just never quite know what is going on with him and his objectives certainly put the whole crew at risk of not making it back alive. I am certainly hoping that Hunlaf has enough time left to write a few more of his journey's, especially with some mentions of other events that have happened in his life and the mention of another character's death at the end, I for one need more. This continues to be a standout historical fiction series and if you love this time period, it is so worth taking the journey with Hunlaf and his friends and crewmates!!

AD 796. Hunlaf and his comrades are travelling to the land of The Moors, to the city of Qadis. They seek a book, one that may hold secrets that will change their lives forever and it’s worth a fortune. They know kingdoms around Europe will pay a vast sum for this book, but they will have to be very careful in this strange land. It is a place of powerful people, and friends will be hard to come by. A place where you should trust nobody. This will be the most difficult task of Hunlaf’s life, will he and his shipmates fulfil their goal and overcome the odds in this most hostile of lands?
In this third book of the series Matthew Harffy has reached a new level in his writing. This is an incredible piece of work, it’s fast paced, intelligent and vivid in its telling. Simply put, it’s phenomenal.

More fiction than history but a great story.

The books in this series seem to have a more tenuous attachment to history than the Beobrand novels and instead becomes a rip roaring yarn of fiction located in a past time. This diminishes nothing from the writing as Harffy becomes ever more polished as a creator of fiction and a wordsmith. Limning is still possibly overused but generally the language seems acceptable with modern language appropriately salted with older or foreign phraseology.
This fast paced book sees Hunlaf and the crew of Brymsteda on an adventure for silver, Charlemagne and God in Moorish Spain with limited success. This also feels like the first of a string of stand-alone adventures for the crew with references of exotic cities along the silk road the possible options are myriad.
I eagerly await the next installment.

By far my favourite in the Time for Swords series.

Almost every chapter ends on a cliffhanger that compelled me to continue onto the next. Many times, It was with great effort that I forced myself to put the book down and go to bed.

The climax particularly had me on the edge of my seat, my pulse quickening with the stakes faced by the amazing cast of characters.

Interesting seeing the clash of cultures, though I do wish we got to see a little bit more of arab culture in Spain.

Matthew Harffy, if you read this, know that you are my favourite author and a massive inspiration to myself as an aspiring historical fiction author.
Keep churning out the amazing content, you'll always have a reader/follower in myself.

Best regards!

I do enjoy Matthew Harffy's books, in particular the early Anglo-Saxon Beibrand series. This series, set in the Viking age, is also good, but I haven't really felt for and with Hunlaf in the same way.
This is the story I've least liked. It ticks all the boxes of an early medieval adventure, with fighting and tension and the wonder of Muslim Spain, but it really wasn't much more than a novella padded out to be a novel. They went on an adventure, suffered various trials, then returned. Many of the chapters were filler with a hook at the end to make you read the next one, in an old style 'Batman' episode way.
Nevertheless, it was an easy read and I enjoyed the setting and concept, and will read the next one in due course.

Great read about Hunlaff's further adventures. This time in Moorish Spain. Traffic in itsdescrptio of battle and fight scenes. Leaves one wondering how deadly it must have been to meet a Viking outfit, out on a mission of either destruction or treasure recovery. The book easily puts the reader into a frame of mindset in the era (circa 800 AD) and it does conjure up vivid images of the sea, the ships the descriptions of the peoples and towns. Love these period novels, especially as they encompass more than one book so you come to be familiar with the growth of the main characters.

Matthew Harffy is a great story taler, this is a second series of his that I am into and I enjoyed them all very much. The writing flows fast, he builds his characters very well and you as a reader get attached to them from the start of the story. The story itself get you to different places in 8 century Europe witch by itself is a great idea.
Great reads, I will recommend for everyone who loves a little bit of history and adventure. Can’t wait for the next instalment in the series.

Outstanding!

As always Mr Harffy delivers yet another brilliant story. As with all his other books this one was difficult to put down. Full of action, well-described battle scenes, characters you either love or hate and wonderful descriptions of all the places that they visited. Well worth reading and highly recommended.

Brilliant again.

Another awesome read in the TIME FOR SWORDS series. This story takes our family of warriors to Al-Andalus, Hunlaf is still chasing his book, Runolf is more concerned about silver and they all love to fight. This is the 3rd book and I can't recommend it highly enough.

My favourite book this year so far.
I love the Bernica Chronicles, very much in the Bernard Cornwell style, all good stories, all exciting page turners and leaving you with that 'can't wait for the next one' feeling.
Then came a Time for Swords!
This whole series has jumped up a level, with A Day of Reckoning putting Matthew Harffy (in my opinion) up amongst our top authors.

Excellent book, portrays the Dark Ages and the period it was in, in a very bare and bloody way. Excellent personification of characters with little to dull the way, yet there are ebbs and pauses for the reader to catch his breath. A well-done period piece that should be recommended to anyone keen on reading fictional literature on the Iberian Peninsula.
