Holy Hannah, what a book hangover! This novel made me laugh, it made me cry, I couldn’t put the darned thing down. This is by far my favourite novel yet from this oh so talented author.
In this novel we return to summer camp, one that I’d love to attend. No, one that I feel like I’ve attended. The scene is so well developed that I don’t just picture it, I walk through it. Cooper continues with her upbeat, approachable writing style that draws you into a world that she paints before you. Everything is vividly larger than life, creating a world unlike any other. The races and species that Cooper presents in this novel are quite well developed as well. Cooper ensures that we know what each is capable of and what is expected of them, all without breaking the flow of this remarkable story.
Cooper does a remarkable job at taking characters that we’ve met previously and showing her readers their true selves. The contrast between public image and real personality is shocking at times. Yet, at the same time, you can always see how one person could easily be or become the other. I really like how we get to know more about Sarah, her true nature, and why she acts how she does. It’s also intriguing to see the internal conflict running in Nick throughout. You finally find out why he acts as he does. The secondary characters returning from previous novels remain true to form, not changing or becoming someone entirely new. We do learn something new about almost all of them, even if they’ve had their own stories. The new characters introduced in this novel are also off the hook.
Cooper definitely went above and beyond with this novel. It’s a brilliant read for any who enjoy hard won love, adventure, and the paranormal. That said, I’d definitely suggest reading the other novels in this series first. Cooper brilliantly weaves these other stories in and out of this one, creating a novel that shows the interconnectedness of everything at this intriguing camp. I also can’t wait to see what comes next for these oh so memorable characters.
