Abigail Phelps #2

Scenes From Highland Falls

Rate this book
"I knew that Senator Kennedy would not accept defeat. He would not step aside and allow his horrible error to be a wake-up call. He would not reach out to me and suggest we put our bitter feud behind us. He would try again, for Kennedy men do not give up. They don't give up on their dreams of the White House, they don't give up once they decide they want to spend their lives with the woman they love, and they don't give up until they've gotten rid of anything standing in their way."

The delusions of a woman detached from reality? Or the scandalous, well-kept secrets of the greatest love story the world has never known? In the second installment of the Abigail Phelps Series, Abigail's stories become even more difficult to believe, and absolutely impossible to deny.

Bethany Turner has been writing since the second grade, when she won her first writing award for explaining why, if she could have lunch with any person throughout history, she would choose John Stamos. She stands by this decision. Bethany now writes pop culture–infused rom-coms for a new generation of readers who crave fiction that tackles the thorny issues of life with humor and insight. She lives in Southwest Colorado with her husband, whom she met in the nineties in a chat room called Disco Inferno. As sketchy as it sounds, it worked out pretty well in this case, and they are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Connect with Bethany at seebethanywrite.com or across social media @seebethanywrite, where she clings to the eternal dream that John Stamos will someday send her a friend request. Once again, Bethany Turner has entertained me with her wonderful imagination and writing skills. The main character, Abigail Phelps, has quite a life with such powerful and famous men in her life. Her loves, deep friendships, and her own fame and fortune describe a life that only a few achieve...yet many might dream about. I am anxious to start the third book in the series.

Fantastic story - well written, well told.

I normally read thrillers so this genre is slightly outside my comfort zone. I'm glad I decided to give it a try. The writer's style is easy to read. Her narrative glides smoothly and effortlessly through the pages. This is the second in a trilogy, so I didn't have the perspective of the first book, though it does stand alone perfectly well, and there are plenty of pointers to previous events. I had a hunch about what was going on, and was pleased when it was confirmed later in the story. Just over one third of the way through the book, a clever conspiracy starts to unfold, and it is a cracker. Overall, a satisfying and interesting read, highly recommended.

Ms Turner has done the same superb job of getting under the skin of real people and relating them to Abby Phelps as she did in the first book of this series. Being English, and familiar with the background from which he comes, I can judge Christopher Dean most easily, and I wonder if he’s read these books: if he has, he will have recognised himself, so kudos for that insight.

Scenes from Highland Falls is a “stand alone” novel with clever references to Abby’s past, both her relationships and life events, and that should be enough. It didn’t ground reality and allow the reader o suspend belief, and that was done incredibly well in I’ve Loved These Days, with the input provided by Colorado psychiatrist, Dr Redmond. When he does make his entrance it’s dramatic, but an earlier appearance, however brief, would have provided an anchor, and the freedom to dream that Abby’s fantasy life could, and did, happen.

I wouldn’t have missed a word of this marvellous book. It made me laugh and it moved me to tears, and I recommend it to any reader looking for escapism on a grand scale but Ms Turner set a high standard with five star I’ve Loved These Days. Scenes from Highland Falls could so easily be equally magical and it isn’t: for that reason I’m rating it four stars.

This is the second book in the Abigail Phelps Trilogy, and it doesn't disappoint. In many ways this is even more of an emotional wringer than I've Loved These Days (Book 1 of the 3). Bethany Turner's writing has the power to pull you in on a deep level and leave you begging for more. I can't wait to feast my eyes on the third and final book. While book 1 would work as a standalone novel, to get the most enjoyment from book 2, I would strongly recommend that you read book 1 first.

In book 2, Abigail Phelps continues her story of love and loss, but as well as a great love story, we are also given a rip-roaring conspiracy. As in book 1, I adore the way that famous people and events have been remodelled and moulded in the author's hands, and how--even though we know it to be fiction--it is utterly and deliciously believable at the same time.

I highly recommend both the Abigail Phelps Trilogy and the Author, Bethany Turner.

She did it again, a wonderfully entertaining book. It made me laugh and cry, cry a lot. Although this one has quite the twist that is a head scratcher. Can't wait to start book #3.

I was so excited about diving back into the Chris and Abby story. It’s been several months since I visited two of my favorite literary characters ever! Not only was I not disappointed, I was sucked in even further than I had been in the first book of this series. This story had me glued to the pages from chapter one. Abby’s journey is one filled with laughter, tears, anxiety, and fear … and the best/worst part is … it can go from one extreme to another in just a few lines.

Especially after reading the epilogue for the last book in this series, I am ready to find out how this all ends. Or am I? I just don’t know how I’m going to react. It has taken me on such an emotional journey so far, I’m almost of the same mindset of Abby, which is scary.

In one way, I want to know; but in another, if I do find out, it will mean the Chris and Abby story ends. That’s just not something I’m sure I’m ready to accept.

Needless to say, I will probably need therapy after reading the final book in this series. Or perhaps, I need it right now for becoming so involved in a fictitious story. Either way … I’ve Loved These Days. (pun totally intended).
