Chasing Dragons

Rate this book
Claire Lance is finally ready to settle down. She’s fallen in love again against all odds, the FBI considers her case inactive, and she’s found a place where she thinks she can finally be safe. But Lance’s peace is short-lived as a group of hunters threaten someone close to her and she’s forced to take a stand or see a friend lose the woman she loves.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Lance, a cold-blooded killer is closing in on her. Savastian Kedrov is dedicated and brutal, and she isn’t above using force to get what she wants. She’s not with the FBI, and she’s not interested in placing Lance under arrest. With Lance in her sights and unable to cut and run, it’s only a matter of time before the gunfire starts.

Better than Book 3, but I really could have done without the typos for this one too ...

In this fourth book in the series, wanted fugitive cum folk heroine Claire Lance gets another nemesis. This time, it is not someone who plays by the rules, but a hired mercenary who may not hesitate to use any means to get to her. People who loved the previous three Claire Lance adventures will enjoy the book. However, I can't help but feel that some plot points and situations are being rehashed. Plotwise, it's not as strong as the first three. Some developments and coincidences (the psycho hunters angle) feel too implausible and contrived. While it is still exciting and fast moving, the whole book feels too 'been-there done-that'. Even Claire's visions of her wife, Elaine, which used to be filled with emotion and pathos, sound like they're just having a little fireside chat over beer. It's reassuring and comfortable, but not particularly memorable.

Not that I think this is a bad series. On the contrary, it is my favorite of all Geonn Cannon's works. But I'm glad this is already the penultimate book. I think Claire's suffered enough. I don't mind waiting for the final book but Mr. Cannon, please give Claire the proper send-off that she deserves! :)

Just when I think Lance has found her place... BANG! Something happens and the excitement begins again. I'm such a sadist with how excited I get at the things Claire goes through, but man she's SO good at getting through it all and her friends and their loyalty. I love it.

Needless to say this is the fourth book I’ve read with Claire Lance as the leading lady. She is a delightful character, a tough cookie, and just as well, as trouble seems to find her.

Sometimes fate shoots you with the fuck-up gun and things work out for the best when the dust settles.

As with all the books in this series, once again someone is hot on Claire’s trail wanting to bring her in for her so-called part in killing Elaine, her lover. In this instalment that person comes in the form of the psychotic Savastian Kedrov. And like every other book, all is not as it seems.

There’s actually a lot going on in this story – Claire’s attempt at a normal life in Alaska, getting to know the locals, and what a delightful bunch of people they were. Aitch stole my heart. Then there’s Claire’s new love interest Jodie who we met in book three, and the two of them trying to form a relationship. When a posse of men arrives in town, things really go belly up. An unsuspecting person is abducted, and thus sees Claire on the hunt to rescue her. At one point someone called her MacGyver, and the moniker couldn’t be more fitting.

Elaine’s ghost is ever present, as are the conversations between Claire and her deceased lover, although they are taking a turn, suggesting Claire might finally be able to let go and love again.

When death comes for someone you truly love, it’s hard to believe that you’re supposed to move on. It feels like a betrayal. But that’s life. You take the scars and you keep going.

There are a couple of adult scenes in this book, one gave me my erotica fix, the other I really could’ve done without. I won’t get into the reasons why, as to do so would involve spoilers.

I’m looking forward to seeing where book 5 goes and hope Claire finally gets a break, the chance to settle down and find the love she deserves.

Elaine continues to converse with Claire which is weird but comforting. I want Claire to have what she needs to find peace and love with Jodie. I thought her new friends in Alaska were awesome, caring and loads of fun. Wonderful and entertaining series.

Great suspense and action series!

This a new author for me. I am enjoying the suspense and action.
Claire Lance is like a cat with 9 lives. I love the character arc for Claire. An innocent women thought to have murdered her partner. It's crazy on one hand that she was the ONLY person looked at for the murder. She was undercover with a drug ring. Because Elaine was the sister of an FBI agent the search stopped there.
Claire is on the run constantly. Along the way she is always a good samaritan. This time she leaves the woman she loves behind. A very good friend recommends a very small town where may be the last place anyone would look for her.
She has a hit woman hot on her trail and she always gets what she wants; murder her target.
The towns people protect their own and Claire has become one of them.
I enjoy the journey and watching Claire finally begin to heal. Most of what happens in the story is believeable. On to the 5th book.
