Action packed and quick paced, a volume where we learn more about the characters. This is a good series, though violent throughout so not for everyone.
This volume starts with the Capital deciding they need to make a specialized team to take out Night Raid. They want to take out Night Raid because they are killing the corrupt political people. The Capital wants to protect the corruption. Night Raid learns that a team is being made and has a secret meeting in the middle of the Capital. They feel like they can meet there because a few of them don't have Wanted posters and are unknown to the Capital. Tatsumi joins a fighting arena hosted by the leader of the Capital group so he can learn who the leader is. This plan backfires and he gets captured. I can't write more without spoilers.
This volume follows the traditional manga style of black and white and panels that help tell the story.
This volume introduces many new characters. The reader hasn't seen them before. Wave is one of the new characters. He is a lot like Tatsumi, actually. He is from the countryside, like Tatsumi. He is kind of the "normal" person in the group. Everyone in Night Raid isn't really normal. One is gay, one is small and child-like, one is "over the top", and hyper. but Wave and Tatsumi are just regular guys from the country. They don't understand what city life is like until they get there. They are just simple, normal guys.
This volume introduces us to the Jaegers, which are being set up to be big antagonists to our Night Raid crew. I’m conflicted because I really like all the members of the Jaegers, with the exception of Seryu… Esdeath’s love of Tatsumi had me cracking up big time.
After Night Raid's loss of Braht, the team trains even harder. Meanwhile, Boss leaves Akame in charge while she searches for new recruits to fill the new vacant spots of their deceased friends. While Esdese looks for new replacements and a form of revenge against Night Raid. Creating a special police task force, called Jaegers.
While still plotting, Esdese holds a tournament to find candidates to "fall in love" with. Her search stops when she sees Tatsumi's win and smile. The gang now tries to rescue him.
There's a lot of build-up in this volume. The bad guys level-up again, this time a whole new team of antagonists, with the volume ending on a cliffhanger of danger. Oh, and Tatsumi stumbles upon the feminine side of General Esdeath (you know what that means).
Pretty hilarious how this manga represents gay characters. Exactly how you'd expect a homophobic person would write a gay character if they wanted to add a little bit of "diversity." It would be offensive if it wasn't so stereotypical and eye-roll inducing.
Sometimes love hurts...other people. Esdeath meets her new squad of Teigu users and finds love in this volume. Unfortunatly for Tatsumi he is the target of her affections and is whisked away to the imperial headquarters where Esdeath wishes to make him her lover. Be sure to read how Tatsumi handles the situation as he is able to talk to Esdeath as no one else can right now. We also get some more scenes about Esdeath's past as a story about her is revealed.
My fave moment would have to be surprised Tatsumi charming Esdeath with his smile and being collared by her before she drags him off. It takes the other squad members to tell her the collar might be a bad idea. :)
The plot thickens! Takahiro continues to be merciless about killing characters and hurting the reader's heart, but that makes it all the more gripping to read. This series does not shy away from how awful violence truly is and how abuse of power upends people's lives into a living hell--and how fighting back, while right, is painful and gritty.
There's always just enough hope, just enough reminder of the light, and that's the series' draw: the friendships between the main characters (and the main villains) reminds us why we live--for each other.
One of my favorite manga series right now. The art is fantastic. There are a ton of interesting characters, and the dialogue is fresh. The fight scenes are intense. You'll find plenty of fan service 🐕🦺 in this one and it's done right. A little femdom in volume 4 with Esdeath and Tatsumi's relationship. I'm not going to lie—I'm into that. Plus, it gave the action of the series a bit of sex appeal, which (for me) makes for a more engaging read. Bottom line, I could relate to this series more than most run-o'-the-mill Shonen Manga, and I hope to collect it if the opportunity arises.
General series thoughts: Mixed bag to the max. I find the overall conflict, including some of the harsh realities of the battles, extremely compelling. But I do feel the series goes too far in the graphic nature of some things that boil down to being there simply to show someone's a bad guy. The art is striking in parts and hard to follow in others. Attached to the characters and completely hooked into reading to see where it all goes, but on the other hand it is a rough read.
Another fun and violent entry in the manga series that finds Tatsumi entering a fight tournament, only to draw the unwanted attention of General Esdeath and her Jaegers....but not in the way he expects. Takahiro keeps the action and plot moving at a break neck pace and the surprise twist between Esdeath and Tatsumi is unexpected. However, like the previous books, the tone is never solid. Overall, still a fun read.
Oh no, why am I starting to like Esdeath?! and WAVE? and that adorable man that looks weird who cares about his wife?!
I'm still salty with the capital, obviously, but as soon as Esdeath held up her list of requirements for future lovers, I was like "ohohoho I wonder who will fill THAT spot." Esdeath, u such a cougar.
A bit too much fan service in this volume for my taste--I know, I know, that's been a consistent part of Takahiro's work on this series, but not to the extent of this volume--so three stars instead of four. Still, the introduction of Esdeath's teigu squad was cool, and the deal with Tatsumi looks like it could be interesting if it isn't left to be an excuse for close-ups of Esdeath's boobs...
Is it crazy that I like the Jaegers as much as Night Raid? Tatsumi was called lady killer in a previous volume and well that definitely doesn't work for his advantage when General Esdeath takes a loving towards him lol. Now that the main combatants have been introduced I think some crazy action is going to go down in the next several volumes.
Tatsumi getting unintentionally abducted by Esdeath is hilarious.
A little fore-shadowing into Kurome' teigu ability. Ability to summon puppets? Explained at the end. Crazy that it can hold up to 8 "zombies" of people she has killed. They also continue to use their skills as zombies?
The doctor enhancing his peeps to find the hideout is such a cool use of his power.

There were some little fights but i still liked this volume because the vibes were less dark than usual. We discovered a whole other side to the Esdeath and i like Night Raid even more after every volume.
