Tobey Marshall is a mechanic struggling to save his family-owned garage. While he and his team skillfully build and race muscle cars on the side, it’s not enough to keep the doors open. He reluctantly partners with his longtime rival, a wealthy, arrogant ex–professional racer, Dino Brewster. But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet looks as though it will save Tobey’s business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.
Two years later, Tobey is fresh out of prison and eager for revenge. To take Dino down, he plans to enter the high-stakes De Leon race—the biggest contest of underground racing in the world—to get the money to reclaim his family business and expose Dino’s deception. But getting there won’t be easy, as Tobey must run a high-octane, pedal-to-the-floor gauntlet, dodging cops coast to coast and dealing with fallout from a dangerous bounty on his car. Luckily, with his team—and the surprisingly resourceful Julia—on his side, he just might defy the odds . . .
The best book I’ve read. This book isn’t only for need for speed fans but for anyone who likes a good vengeance story. Does contain some language but very little. I do think the book is better than the movie.
It was just like the movie and I really liked that about the book. Plus the author added some scenes that wasn't from the movie that made the book really good. I recommend this book to any one who likes and even people who don't like cars.
I love this book because, of all the suspense that builds up in the middle of the book! Me and my friend both read this book together and we were both questioning what would happen next and what we had read. We also were having a competition who could read the fastes and he finished the book first! but it dose not madder, it was a great book!!! Dutch
Let me just begin with saying this is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. And I loved every single second of it. (Which is pretty much the same way I felt about the movie.)
I saw the movie first, and it quickly became a favorite of mine despite the worn out plot and half-assed script. But it's based on a racing video game so I didn't really expect much more. The book expands slightly on the movie, giving us a little bit more character backstory but most of it is just a play-by-play of the film.
If you want a quick, fast-paced and overall fun read, this is the book for you. If you want something thought provoking and well thought out, I'd find something else.
This book was really exciting and it kept me interested the whole time. Benny and Tobey are my favorite characters in this book. The main reason I liked this book was because it was funny and you wouldn't expect some of the things that happened. I couldn't put it down until I finished it because it never really had any boring parts and it was really interesting, I would read it again because it was awesome!
Very interesting and exciting book! I felt that I related to the main character very much so, because Ive gone through a lot of the same things he has in my life. If you love cars and their elegance, I would recommend reading this book!
Need for speed is a great book written by Brian Kellehar. The main character Toby Marshall is a mechanic in New York that is struggling just to get by. He also is a street racer on the side. He uses his street facing money to make the payments on his garage. In the book a tragic thing happens to his friend and he is put in jail. When he gets out he is angry at the person and goes out for revenge on him in a street race. This is a great action packed book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for something fun to read.
I love the movie! I liked that you got a little more information about things in the book. I just sat here listening, it's not too long, so I just finished it in one sitting.
My interest in Need for Speed was less than 0 until my cousin made me go and see the movie. I won't lie, it was really good. So I got my hands on the book purely to see how close to the movie it was, and to kind of relive the movie since it's not out on DVD yet. I have to say, reading a book about cars when I only watch movies about cars for action is a bit bland though; all the listing of the super "awesome" parts is kind of beyond me.
Need for Speed is about your average, hell-bent hero looking to clear his name. Though to some critics that come off as a bit cliche, which can make it more understandable as to why they tore this movie completely up, it still is something I disagree on. Not only was the action there, but the story was also as well. I mean yes, it's not your typical Fast and Furious story with hundreds of cars totaling and an occasional wheelie, but that's because it's just more practical.
I don't even know how to rate this. It reads like a Wikipedia entry about street racing blended with some game character stats sheets, plus some Oz fanfiction??
Love the movie. Wanted to know more back story and couldn't find the screenplay. It was fun reading scenes that didn't make it in to the movie. I just wish the book had gone inside the character heads a little more.
Absolutely love the movie. Was looking for more of a background on the backstory. Had some of the details but some of the story was also changed from the movie which was a little disappointment.
