Reading level ages 8-12 years.

Recommended for: kids who have a biography project.

Detailing his many achievements as well as covering his life, this is a biography of one of our most interesting presidents. This book covers his early childhood to his death and all of the important and fascinating facts about him. Did you know Roosevelt’s sons name was Kermit? Or that he won the Nobel Peace Prize?

This is more a review of the Who Was?Is? series as a whole. This series which at the moment contains ninety-one books, is a perfect resource for tweens who need help with their projects and homework, or who are just interested in biographies. Formatted as a chapter book, the book flies by for the reader and is always covering interesting facts, unknown and well known. There are also sketches amongst the pages, but not large enough to be illustrations. They do a great job of highlighting the information and not taking over the entire book.

I chose Theodore Roosevelt because he is someone I am familiar with, and was pleasantly surprised to find a vast amount of interesting information about him in such a tiny source. This series is also trustworthy in terms of information and any librarian/teacher should feel comfortable giving this to a tween to read for correct information.

Didn't know much about TR other than what my daughter told me she had learned one day in class. She was so fascinated by him and it rubbed off on me. I had to read this.

Things I learned or found fascinating:

--TR spoke German, Latin, Greek, and French.

--He had large teeth which gave him the nickname "Teethadore" and a high-pitched voice that sounded like an old woman's.

--Both his first wife and his mom Mittie died on the same day, February 14, Valentine's Day. His wife had just given birth to their daughter Alice Lee two days before her death.

--TR worked as a police commissioner. His goal was to end police corruption. This won him praise from city newspapers.

--TR became the 26th President of the U.S. after McKinley was assassinated. TR became the youngest President then at age 42.

--He wrote many books, including one on insects, at age 9.

--Stuffed bears were being sold in Germany as "Teddy Bears". He said, "I don't think my name is likely to be worth much in the toy bear business, but you are welcome to use it."

--TR helped Panama gain independence from Colombia and was thus able to negotiate for construction of the Panama Canal. Palindrome of the time: A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!

--He was the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize for being a peacemaker when he convinced Japan and Russia to sign a peace treaty.

--His daughter was a wild child, smoking in public when it wasn't looked at as ok for a woman to do so, she loved fast cars (although they only went about 30mph at the time), and she liked carrying her pet snake in her purse. She was quite the celebrity of her day.

--TR cared about animals and the environment. He fought to protect Yellowstone National Park and helped create five new national parks, over 50 bird sanctuaries, and preserved 150 national forests . Protecting and preserving the environment was a big priority. He declared places such as the Grand Canyon and Arizona's Petrified Forest national monuments.

--His dad Theodore Sr. helped create the American Museum of Natural History in New York in 1869.

--TR went on a safari with his son Kermit after his presidency. He was received like a hero with huge crowds cheering him.

--FDR was a distant cousin of his who married Theo's niece Eleanor. FDR once called TR, "The greatest man I ever knew."

--TR explored South America in 1913 with his son Kermit. There is a river off the Amazon named for him.

--At almost 60 years of age and ill, TR still had much fight in him. He volunteered to lead men into battle during WWI but he was denied the request by the government.

He truly was a bigger than life person.

This is a children's history book. But I enjoy reading them. They are short, easy to comprehend and give you the basic gist of the person's life, tidbits you didn't necessarily know, etc. This one on Teddy Roosevelt was great actually....

Good old Teddy Roosevelt. He always seems larger than life to me, like his personality is too big to contain.

A couple of fun facts:

*His daughter owned a pet snake named Emily Spinach.

*He was more focused on international matters than other presidents had. (Panama Canal)

*Loved nature and the frontier

*Rough Riders and Cuba - he was pretty fearless.

Compared to the other Who HQ books, I don’t think this one dived deep enough into the impacts of Teddys work. The FDR one seemed to be better written in regard to cause and effect.

I still learned some good facts about an objectively great President! We love a conservationist and a man that supports women’s suffrage.

This book felt like a gentle reminder of what a good president and government can do for America. As Teddy once said “We are not building this country of ours for a day. It is to last through the ages.” It was nice to see someone who supported and created the National Park Ranger program as they understand the impacts of what can happen when we don’t protect land , animals, and natural resources.

This was a fascinating and fun biography on Theodore Roosevelt, the "conservationist president," the one who first protected wildlife, public lands, national forests, and reserves. He cared about pollution and clean water. We could use a president like him again.
On top of that, he was an adventurer and decent family man. His children's pets are entertaining to read about.
The book begins with his attempted assassination, an interesting story I'd forgotten - saved by the thick pages of a speech and glasses case in his pocket! An interesting life.

After becoming president in 1901, Roosevelt created the United States Forest Service and established 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments. During his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt protected approximately 230 million acres of public land.

"The time has come to inquire seriously what will happen when our forests are gone, when the coal, the iron, the oil, and the gas are exhausted, when the soils have still further impoverished and washed into the streams, polluting the rivers, denuding the fields and obstructing navigation."

Five-stars for reasons that go beyond the writing. As a history supplement, this book includes two timelines at the end that help a reader fully understand the life of Theodore Roosevelt and place him amongst other important world events. It has nine easy read chapters and includes several well drawn illustrations that give faces to the historical characters and events. Though this book was selected for my middle school students, I would consider it a good read for adults as well who are looking for a quick biography that highlights the significant moments of T. Roosevelt's life.

This was my first "Who Was..." book. I had to try them out seeing how they are so SUPER popular at my library. Of course, I chose Teddy Roosevelt as he's one of my favorite presidents. I can now see why kids like these so much. These are packed with information, presented in an intelligent and accessible way, and are just the right length for the target reading level/age group.

Very recommended, grades 3 and up.

Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest president in American History. He was the first President to do a lot of things. He won the Nobel Peace Prize while sitting as president. He was the first to ride in a car. He even was the first to fly in an airplane as president. When he was younger, you would not have thought that he could do any of these things. Theodore Roosevelt struggled with asthma a lot as a child. This prevented him from playing outside a lot when he was young. He found is love for reading due to his asthma and he started reading a lot. He also loved science and wrote a book about the different insects and creatures he found in his back yard. He thought about studying natural science in college, but he ended up being drawn to history and public speaking. He married his college sweetheart in 1880, the same year he finished his studies at Harvard. He wanted to continue his education in law by studying at Columbia in New York. He loved to be outdoors, hunting and exploring new things. He loved to ride horses and boxing.

At 23, he was the youngest lawmaker and having such a charming young wife helped his political career take off in the right direction. After his first child was born, his wife and his mother became very ill. They both died on February 14th, 1884. His sister took care of baby Alice, named after her mother, while Teddie went back out west to try to move on with his life. After a while, Teddie connected with an old family friend named Edith. They had known each other through their whole lives and began a serious relationship. They were married around 1885 and took young Alice and moved to Sagamore Hill. Soon after that, Edith and Teddie started their own family with Theodore III. He started to support President Harrison while he was running for the presidency. Harrison won and rewarded him with a government job. Edith had another child in 1894, naming his third child Archibald. About 3 years later, Teddie was named the assistant secretary in the US Navy. About 4 years in the Navy, he was sworn in as president in 1901 at 42 years old.

A biography of Theodore Roosevelt for middle grades.

I just read Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt and wondered how this compared. It turns out the two complement each other quite well. They both cover several things the other missed. This one focuses more on Roosevelt's family life and political highlights. The other one gives more details about his life out West, the tricky spots of his political career, and adventures in war and abroad. So it turns out, if you read both you get a fuller picture of the man and some behind the scenes things about different highlights. Of course, both cover all the biggest events in Roosevelt's career but they do so from different angles. This one is more cut and dry in style, the other is more emotive. They are both about the same length and illustrated. I really can't say which one is a better biography because I think they are pretty equal but better when you read them together.

Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. The attempt on Roosevelt's life is related and just some bleeding mentioned. Roosevelt's part in the Spanish-American War is very briefly related, with very few gory details. Deaths and injuries of Roosevelt's sons in WWI are also mentioned, but not gory.

He was only 42 years old when he was sworn in as President of the United States in 1901. Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest President ever. He was the first to Nobel Peace Prize, first to ride in a car, and the first to fly. He was the 26th President. Theodore was shot by an assassin and because he had his speech in his pocket from his campaign speech and it was 50 pages long it saved him from being wounded. Bull Moose was one of his nick names, Teddy was another. Theodore was famous for his speech he made "I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do". He was a very well liked President.
On his 22nd birthday Roosevelt married his college sweet heart Alice. They had one daughter and two days after his daughter was born his wife died if kidney failure. He did re marry and Five children with his second wife.
Roosevelt lived a very adventures life and was very smart he had a law degree from Harvard.
I feel this book gave me good information about a leader of our country.
And this book gives a lot of information about how he lived and how he was as a president.I feel anyone could benefit from reading this book especially anyone who loves history and about past presidents.

Who Was Theodore Roosevelt? by Michael Burgan is a short but fact-filled book in the award-winning "Who Was..." series targeted specifically for the youth market. The author shares details from Theodore Roosevelt's youth as a sickly child dealing with asthma, but combined with a vigorous lifestyle, he also drew out of his asthma naturally. He is popularly referred to as Teddy Roosevelt although he wasn't fond of that nickname. He is generally remembered as an American statesman, conservationist, naturalist, historian and writer, who became the 26th president of the United States when, as Vice President, he was sworn in upon the death of President William McKinley who was assassinated. He served from 1901 to 1909. He had previously served as governor of New York. I have read many books about Theodore Roosevelt and this book is great as a quick review but also as an overview for those who are not that familiar with one of our most popular presidents who is one of the four presidents represented on Mount Rushmore.

While this little book did not include all of my favorite facts about Teddy Roosevelt, it was chock full of good info. J and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this larger-than-life president, especially since we could do it IN PERSON! If you don't know much about this earlier Roosevelt, this is a great place to start. We especially enjoyed the page detailing all the animals that lived in the Roosevelt Zoo when they were in the White House.

If I could play editor, I would include more info about his trip down the Amazon (The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey is an adult-size tale of this trying time.) and some info about Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The North and South portions of the park are on either side of his Elkhorn Ranch in North Dakota. A visit to the park and nearby Medora is highly recommended.😎

I did learn a lot about Theodore with this one. For example, I didn’t know he has such a tragic first marriage, despite not understanding why he never spoke of his wife, especially to their own daughter. And how his mother died not long after his wife. I also didn’t know about the assassination attempt. I wish it spoke more about the things he did as president as far as policies and changes during his presidency. It spoke more about his fascination with wildlife and hunting and his childhood/marriages and war. But since it’s YA (and I say this with all Who HQ books I’ve reviewed) It’s really just a starting off point. Who HQ, is never apprehensive about topics that are considered dark in the 2020s age of sensitivity like ‘’suicide’’ ‘’death’’ or ‘’abuse’’ and this one is no different. I suggest now, reading an adult book if you want to know about the man’s policies and politics. If anyone has any good recommendations, please let me know.

4 stars. The last one is for me.

Who was Theodore Roosevelt by Micheal Burgan is 4 out of 5 stars. Personally I thought the book spent many many chapters on the same subject and for me it felt very slow. I felt as though I was reading the same thing over and over every time I flip the page you to feel as though I was reading the same one. There was only really 3 main things that stuck out to me, his family, his love for the outdoors, and of course running for president and his love for politics. Although I will admit those 3 things were quite nice to read. They made me realize what a great person he was but also made me want to thank him for what he’s done for the people, fighting for rights and etc. Just buy this book I could tell he was a very ambitious and outgoing person. I l really liked this book and would recommend to everyone.

Served as a “Rough Rider” in Spanish-American War. Became 26th (and youngest) President when William McKinley died in office. His domestic policies were known as “Square Deal”. Promoted conservation. Supported Panama in gaining independence from Columbia in order to build Panama Canal. First American to win Nobel Peace Prize for role in ending Russo-Japanese War.

Teddy bear named after him after he refused to shoot a bear that his friends tied up for him during hunting trip, but told them to put the injured beat out of its misery.

Like other Who Was books, a concise and easy read for most 8-12 year olds. My 9 year old read this one by himself, and since I was curious to learn more about TR, I read it too. It presents a lot of facts for parents or teachers to follow-up: militarism, environmentalism, workers’ rights, America’s role as an emerging power in the 20th Century. I didn’t know that TR had so many “firsts” as President: (first sitting President to visit a foreign country, first to ride in a car, first on a plane). Overall a great introductory read.

Reading this series with my niece and i love the way it incorporates lots of historical facts into a fun and easy reading format. Teddy Roosevelt is such an interesting character! From his early life being a sickly child to boxing at Harvard. To being a cowboy in the west, to becoming the 26th president of the United States. He had the core value of not putting up with bullies, whether that was foreign powers or corporations, taking advantage of the common American. Roosevelt had such an interesting life and was one of our greatest leaders he acted as he believed.

My first "Who Was" book. Is it just the Kindle edition, or is the typography very basic? I know these are very popular in libraries, but this just had a boring look to it, and was written in a somewhat monotonous manner. For example, the first paragraph of Jean Fritz's Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt is packed with information, but is ten times more interesting!
There is a lot of material to cover with Teddy Roosevelt; no wonder so many of the biographies of him are multiple books!

Wow! I can't believe Michael Burgan was able to cram Roosevelt's large and interesting life into about 100 pages! He really conveyed to the reader Roosevelt's strength and vitality. I was a little disappointed that his hazardous trip to the Amazon in 1913 barely got a mention. That just made me more determined to find a copy of River of Doubt and finally read it. I'm also interested in reading Mornings on Horseback, a David McCullough biography of Theodore Roosevelt.

I love this book series. This biography of Teddy Roosevelt is a great read for upper elementary students especially as a companion to research. I've always thought Teddy Roosevelt is an interesting historical character, and this book does a good job at covering the big and small details of his life. One of the things I appreciated the most about this book was the chapter about Teddy's contributions to our national parks.

Who was Theodore Roosevelt? Based on the cover illustration, he was the original model for the Bobblehead Doll. As for the book itself, it does hit the highlights of Teedie's (preferred nickname) career, but of course there are glosses. Well, it's a kids' book . . maybe third graders don't need to know TR contrived a coup to separate Panama from Colombia and concluded the treaty with an agent of dubious authority. That can wait until fifth grade.

This books tells all about the life of Theodore Roosevelt, and not just about his life during his presidency. It talks all about his life before he became president and all that he accomplished. It tells all that he did first before and one else, which was a lot. This book is so informational and great for kids.

106 pages. Well-written information on a historical figure and famous president. Author explains his life in enough detail that an elementary student could do a great report. Illustrations and other added information like a timeline at the end is very helpful. Highly recommended for grades 4-6.
