Homecoming Ranch

Rate this book
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia London launches a triumphant, emotional, heartwarming story about finding love, family and home.

Madeline Pruett has made up for a lonely childhood and being raised by an irresponsible single mom by creating a solitary world where timetables and highlighters are essential for the predictability she craves. But Madeline is shocked out of her carefully constructed life by word that a father she never knew has died and left her an inheritance and, surprisingly, two unknown sisters. Madeline hopes that she can fly to Colorado, meet her sisters, discover her inheritance, and return to Orlando in a few days to close the biggest deal of her budding real estate career and get back to what she knows best: a quiet life.

For years, Luke Kendrick has juggled school and career and rescuing his family from illness, death and financial crisis. But he has never lost sight of his goals: building and selling his own dream homes. Just when it seems that dream might finally materialize, Luke is called home to Pine River, Colorado to reclaim the ranch his father lost in a gentlemen’s agreement. He is not surprised—Luke’s family knows he will put his life on hold to rescue them...again. But Luke is surprised by a sexy yet uptight button-up woman in impractical shoes who thinks his ranch now belongs to her.

Madeline isn’t sure how to put order to a sprawling, rundown ranch, not to mention a pair of sisters who are nothing like what she imagined or hoped them to be. The only thing she’s sure of is that careful planning is useless in a place where roads have names like Sometimes Pass and men as ruggedly handsome as Luke Kendrick behave so unpredictably.

As Luke and Madeline go toe to toe over the future of the ranch, sparks fly as hot and fiery as their kisses. Madeline thinks she’s the expert, but it’s Luke who teaches her a thing or two—about breaking down walls, finding home, and the true meaning of family.

A lonely childhood, with lots of changes and a mother who took more notice of the men in and out of her life than her daughter, has caused Madeline Pruett to create a solitary and offered life for herself. She is rigid in planning her time and life down to the last detail. So when she learns she has inherited a ranch from the father she never knew she at first wants nothing to do with it. Especially when it includes two half-sisters she also knew existed. Then she rethink. She will fly to Colorado, meet the sisters and quickly return to working on trying to close the biggest deal of her real estate career. But we all know what happens to plans. They don’t always work out. Luke Kendrick has had a hard time juggling his family and their health issues, which includes a brother with motor neuron disease, his mother’s death, his school and trying to build his own plans and business building and selling homes. It often seems an uphill battle. When he is called home to Pine River to try and reclaim the ranch his father lost, he goes but not without resentment. Resentment towards his father and his foolish actions but also to Grant Tyler, -the man who, he felt, took advantage of his father’s circumstances. Now that man has left Homecoming Ranch to his three daughters. Can he find a way to convince them to sell the ranch back to him? What he hadn’t counted on was being attracted to one of the three woman. That complicates matters.
While this was an easy enough read, I found the actions of the chracters unbelievable at times. Madeline is such a control freak, she is annoying. And then she suddenly does things that feel totally out of character. The sexist aspects of Luke grated at times too. His brother Leo who narrates some of the story I found unconvincing. The two sisters Emma and Libby never felt fleshed out enough.
Although it was an easy enough read, I never really connected well with the main characters to become thoroughly involved. So the type of book that I could say I liked well enough to entertain but it never fully engaged me. Apparently this is book 1 in a series Not sure I am interested enough in the characters to want to read any more in this series. I seem to have had a few three star or less reads recently. So maybe it’s me. But if you like a light romance with a few other themes about families, you may enjoy it a lot more than I did. I liked it but never loved it.

I've been waiting a long time for a new Julia London contemporary romance after devouring her Over the Edge and The Fancy Lives of the Lear Sister series. She doesn't disappoint me in Homecoming Ranch. This story centers around Luke Kendrick and Madeline Pruett. But the secondary character, Leo, steals the show and won my heart.

Madeline is a self-made woman who lives by timetables and highlighters. She never knew her father and the fact that he's just passed away and left her one third of a ranch as her inheritance, along with the news that she has two sisters she's never met, has her world reeling.
Luke has just found out that his father has lost their family homestead, Homecoming Ranch. Once again, he leaves his own life behind in Denver and heads to Pine River to find out what he needs to do to return the ranch to his family.

Madeline is determined to wrap things up in a nice little box, selling her portion of the ranch, meet her two mystery sisters and perhaps find out more about the father she never knew. However, she's in for a rude awakening when she discovers her sisters could care less about getting to know her and the ranch cannot be sold for the immediate future. Before he died, her father contracted Homecoming Ranch out for a large family reunion in just a few short weeks. If she hopes to get any money out of the place, she's going to have to make the reunion a success. Meanwhile, Luke will use whatever means necessary to win back the ranch and refuses to believe the property which has been in his family for generations is now lost to them forever.

While each of them works to their own ends, they can no longer deny the budding attraction which they both felt during their initial meeting and had no clue as to who the other was or the obstacle each posed to one another's future plans. In order for one to win, the other must lose and with feelings and livelihoods on the line, you're wondering how this can ever possibly end with an HEA.

Luke's younger brother, Leo, helps narrate this love story. Although Leo is suffering from a terminal illness, his levity and bravery endears him to the reader in the very first scene of the book. While he struggles against his disease he dishes out sound advice under the guise of sport analogies and football plays.
Julia London weaves this story together with such grace, humor, and understanding of each character's personality. I also loved the setting of Pine River. Julia describes the area of Colorado being near and around Silverton and Durango, Colorado. I spend lots of time in these towns and it made me connect with the book all the more.

My one complaint about Homecoming Ranch is that it needs a bit more sex. I know that makes me a shameless floozy, but I really wanted that connection for Luke and Madeline. I think after all the sexual tension they have, they should have the fireworks and explosions only great sex can provide.

I give Homecoming Ranch 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Madeline inherits a share in a ranch from the father who abandoned her as a child. She discovers she has two sisters, who presumably will come to the fore in the next books. Coming from an unstable background she is shy of commitment and wants to sell the ranch and return to the safety of her life in Orlando.
Unfortunately there is something of an ownership dispute which wasn't resolved before her father died. Luke's father needed cash to pay for his brother's medical bills and he sold the ranch to Madeline's father with a promise that he could buy it back when they had the cash. His brother has Motor Neurone Disease and Luke is always the one who ends up picking up the pieces. So Luke finds himself crashing into Madeline and a contemporary romance is born.

Homecoming Ranch was OK without ever being great. If I had connected with the characters it might have lifted it to a 4 Star book but as it is, it just didn't have the spark that would have made it a great book. I think the second book in the series will probably be better.

The Cover

To my way of thinking a good cover should do three things.

1. It should be visually appealing. It is a point of advertising and it needs to attract the attention of potential readers.
2. It should communicate specifically to those who read that genre of book. A cover is a type of language which readers can interpret.
3. It should be consistent with the contents of the book.

Examples of great covers

Heart of Venom (Elemental Assassin, #9) by Jennifer Estep The Cat, the Wife and the Weapon (A Cats in Trouble Mystery, #4) by Leann Sweeney Beautiful Bad Man (Sutton Family, #1) by Ellen O'Connell Love Overdue by Pamela Morsi Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

IMO...the cover for this book doesn't really work. It's a way too tricky, doesn't really tell me much and isn't visually appealing. The gramophone and the chandelier are completely meaningless...why are they there? Why is there a table set for dinner in a barn?

A light romance in a beautiful setting. The characters are well-drawn and both Luke and Madeline must adjust to enforced changes in their lives. I especially enjoyed the supporting cast of characters.

I just so happened to stumble across this book on amazon, and it sounded super cute. I especially love stuff about ranches and cowboys. Luke wasn't a cowboy to my disappointment.

Madeline uptight real estate agent heads to Colorado to meet the sisters she never knew she had to and to claim and ranch from a father she's never met.

Luke is glue of the family. Always dropping his life when his family is in need especially when his father loses the family ranch in a gentleman's deal.

I thought it was unique that it was told from Leo's (Luke's brother's POV). Although I can't figure out how he would know what's going on in Madeline's life away from Homecoming Ranch.

I absolutely could not stand Emma. Talk about rude and abrasive. Libby my goodness what is wrong with that girl. She's so naive. I say there dumbfounded how she didn't have a care on the world that she obtained a ranch only because her father died before he was suppose to sell it back, and she even grew up in the same town as the family. I was frustrated to say the least.

I like the book overall.

This was my first book by Julia London and I wasn’t disappointed. The story of Madeline and Luke was better than many romances I’ve read. Even though Madeline often does things to push others away, Julia London manages to keep the reader on her side. Luke’s brother had to be one of the better minor characters I’ve read lately.

I struggled with this book at the start as it outlined the premise, which involved a ranch being left to 3 sisters who didn't grow up together. The details of the inheritance and way it was described was confusing and I didn't really have a clue what was happening. I wasn't going to persevere but I'm glad I did. The remainder of the book was filled with romance, small town characters and their drama, angst, and the breaking through of childhood trauma. I loved the characters by the end and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

I was excited to start this book, because I had so much fun reading Julia London’s first book in The Fancy Lives of the Lear Sisters. I figured, this London chick knows how to write, so I picked up Homecoming Ranch, an August release. I’m glad I did.

I’m going to admit I was confused in the beginning. Three sisters — Emma, Madeline and Libby — were left a ranch in their dad’s will. But the ranch was the lifelong home of a completely different family. And one sister had already made herself at home when the story began.

But then it sorted itself out. Once I was un-confused, I could sit back and enjoy London’s fabulous, real characters. These sisters pouted and gave dirty looks, hugged and cowered, laughed and made fools of themselves… just like people I know in real life. And the male love interest? Whoohoooo! He was pretty real too (well, okay, except for the customary perfect physique). Luke got annoyed, angry, impatient, confused, distant, sappy, happy, passionate… hey, just like a real guy.

Leo (Luke’s brother) provided some comic relief and a reality check amidst Luke and Madeline’s love story. London’s “Leo” voice was brilliant, so so brilliant. Changing literary points of view made the story so genuine. Yeah, there’s a romance happening, but yoohoo, readers, there’s real life baggage to deal with too. Just because London writes a Happily Ever After doesn’t mean she skims over the struggles.

Besides writing superb characters, London illustrates the fun, funny and difficult moments of families, whatever package they come in.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Give Madeline Pruett a spreadsheet and a highlighter, and she's a happy camper. Bequeath her one-third interest in a ranch and introduce her to two sisters she's never known, and she's thrown completely off kilter. She puts her organized life as a realtor on hold and journeys to Colorado to put things in order. Naturally she has a flat tire on her way up the mountain to Homecoming Ranch that Luke Kendrick stops to fix. There's an attraction that dims when Luke discovers his father lost the rights to the ranch and she's one of the heirs. When she meets her sisters, Libby and Emma, Madeline indicates she's prepared to sell the property. But Libby wants to turn the ranch into a place where people can come for family events and has a big reunion already scheduled. Both Libby and Emma rebel against selling the property. Then a conflict arises over who really owns the ranch, while the attraction between Luke and Madeline grows.

One of the major draws of this book is Leo. He's Luke's brother whose chapters are told in first person and are the most insightful. Leo is wheelchair bound, suffering from Motor Neuron Disease, but otherwise a genius. He adds humor to the mix rather than bemoaning his situation.

This is the first book in London's Pine River trilogy and will leave you eager for Libby's and Emma's books. Anyone looking for a tender contemporary romance tempered with some sibling rivalry will enjoy this special story.

As much as I enjoy Julia London’s historical romances, it is her contemporary romances that have provided me with some of my most memorable, emotionally satisfying reading experiences. Homecoming Ranch follows this pattern. Madeline and Luke are likeable, engaging characters with complexities enough to be interesting and real and chemistry sizzling enough to provide sigh-worthy romance. The secondary characters have presence and purpose, and just enough is revealed about Madeline’s sisters to leave readers eager to know more. The lawyer too is particularly interesting, seemingly all surface but with an indefinable something that suggests depth and secrets. But Leo is the true scene-stealer and heart-stealer. His courage and humor in the face of adversity are the highlight of the book. I highly recommend Homecoming Ranch, and I look forward to return visits.

Early on, this book went from a mediocre, mildly entertaining read to a cringeworthy bunch of drivel. I am not generally super critical of characters, but I HATED most of this group! The worst offender? Leo, the handicapped little brother - who SHOULD be eliciting sympathy and instead I wanted to smack him (twice). The brothers are a bunch of pigs, Madeline really needs to remove the stick from "her bouncy derriere" and the other characters fill in the holes in multiple horrid ways. That was the first way in which this book disappointed me. The second quickly became the realization that one of my biggest pet peeves (a la Lisa Scottoline) was peppered liberally throughout this book - the repetitive overuse of bad phrases. Although there were a few, the one that pops into my mind at the moment is "pert/pertly." I have never seen that phrase used so many times in one 300 page book in my life. Finally, as the book progressed and the conflict started coming to a head, what happened? Of course the pervert frat boy and the bouncy-reared control freak decided to get it on. What else do you do when your life falls apart??? It was every bit of stereotype shoved into one tight little package. To be fair, when I read the author's bio, it did state that she writes romance novels. So that one's on me I guess. Should have read the bio before picking this one up at the library sale.

Cute and quick read. A lifetime romance style book, which isn't really my genre. If you like the genre, I'd say you'll likely enjoy this book--it was still fine for me. Lived in Colorado for a year in my twenties for work, and those Colorado boys aren't half bad lol.

I think I got this for free from Amazon at one point and have a goal to read all my kindle books.

I have never read a novel by Julia London prior to this novel and I think I am going to pass on the other two novels in this series. Though I was initially intrigued by the plot of this novel there were way too many cardboard characters floating around in this novel. I am sure Ms. London will flesh them out further in the subsequent novels, but I found myself growing bored and then impatient with the entire storyline.

This novel has two main protagonists and also an omnipotent narrator which is also a character in the story. I don't know if Ms. Londo plans on keeping that in place for the next novel (omnipotent narrator) but I hope not since it took me out of the story everytime she re-introduced him that way.

One of the main protagonists is Madeline Pruett. Growing up poor and raised by a selfish single mother she has grown up cautious of men and wanting to make sure everything in her world stays fixed. Contacted by her father's estate lawyer and told she has inherted a ranch in Colorado with two other half sisters sets her perfectly ordered world askew. The second protagnist is Luke Kendrick. Luke has dealt for years with his families troubles and only now has managed to get his life back on track. Madeline and Luke meet cute on a mountain pass as she travels to Colorado.

The omnipotent narrator is actually Luke's younger brother, Leo.

I think that if the novel had focused on these two main characters and all of the background characters who are going to come into play in the next two novels I would have liked it more than I did. For example, Leo has his own backstory which I was interested in but felt as if he took up way too much of the main storyline's focus. Also having his occasional narrations on other characters in the novel just kept throwing me out of the story.

Another issue I have is how Ms. London portrayed the other two sisters in this trilogy. We get introduced to Madeline's half sisters, Libby and Emma. Since I already know that Ms. London has written this series as a trilogy I am assuming the next two books will deal with them. I can then somewhat understand why she didn't want them the main focus of this novel. However, the little bit we get about Libby and Emma was just not enough. Frankly I was getting so annoyed with how Libby and Emma were written and thought one was just way too mysterious for my liking and the other a jerk. They rarely interacted with Madeline and there were barely any scenes with the three women together. I of course was not expecting any 'we are family' moments in the first book in the series (it would have been unrealistic) but there should have been some bare minimum scenes together in order to flesh out the characters.

Ms. London can write and I liked the action taking place in this small town in Colorado. I just felt that the above and how certain loose strings were never really tied up somewhat aggravating.

Please note that I received this novel for free via the Amazon Vine Program.

This is the first in Julia London's latest contemporary trilogy. In this book we very briefly meet Grant Tyler just before he dies when he decides to leave Homecoming Ranch to his three daughters as a way of making up for the fact that he's been a lousy father. Only problem is that Homecoming Ranch is sort of not his to give and the three daughters all of mixed feelings about Grant and each other. This book is devoted to Madeline's story. Madeline has never had any interaction with Grant and has no idea she even has sisters so she has mixed feelings about her inheritance. Deciding just to go to Colorado long enough to sell the ranch, she plans on getting right back to her well ordered if boring life in Orlando. However, nothing goes according to plan which really confuses Madeline. Enter Luke Kendrick who feels that the ranch rightfully belongs to him, a sister that wants nothing to do with family and another sister that wants to keep the ranch. While the premise of this story was very good, I often had difficulty liking Madeline. She has some serious issues from childhood and often lashes out at everyone around her. Then she regrets her actions but never really changes. I think had Madeline been more likable, the story would have been better. That said though I am very much looking forward to the next two in the series because I want to know what is behind the strange actions of the other two sisters. I think their stories could be very intriguing.

This is a wonderful novel; yes, it's a romance, but so much more. There's an engaging narrative voice in the hero's, Luke's, younger brother, Leo, who suffers from motor neuron disease. His narration, funny, caustic, and wise, alternates with London's third-person omniscience and makes for a really cool story-"listening" experience for the reader. The heroine, Madeline Pruett, uptight city-girl, goes head to head with the hero over her inheritance of what he thought was his childhood home and legacy! A heart-wrenching situation given her anxiety and fear-filled psyche and the tragedy of his dying brother, but what spark and fun these two create. London has written a romance novel that will make you laugh, really guffaw, and cry and experience a gamut of emotions: elation, disappointment, heart-ache, and joy! The content here will be familiar to those who've read Kristan Higgins, Jill Shalvis's Lucky Harbor, or the recent SANCTUARY ISLAND by Lily Everett, but the execution is superb! A heartwarming novel

"Homecoming Ranch," is a heartwarming and moving novel about family and all its variations, friendship, communication, and lack of communication, moving forward and taking chances.

Like a breath of fresh air, Julia London has written a novel that is enjoyable, funny, serious, engaging and simply marvelous.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

Three sisters, Madeline, Emma, and Libby, inherit a ranch from a father who checked out of their lives a long time ago. Through a serious of unfortunate events, Luke Kendrick and his family no longer own Homecoming Ranch. For Luke, the ranch was his legacy. He isn't willing to give it up so easily. Misunderstandings keep Luke and Madeline apart for over half the book. Luke's brother Leo, who suffers from a muscular disease, narrates several parts of the book. I didn't like the voice London created for Leo. His character is lovable, but I couldn't believe he would sound like a carefree teenager when he is an adult man with a crippling, life-threatening disease. London will have at least two more books worth of material from the characters in this series. I liked the book enough to pick up another to find out what happened to Madeline's sisters.

I loved this book Julia. Madaline is upset she just found out at the age of 29 who her father was and that she has two sisters and is part owner in a horse ranch in Colorado. Boy that's a lot to deal with. She didn't know any of this. Since her father died he left her as part owner with her sisters so she goes to see the ranch. Madaline is a realtor so she knows about property and values. When she get to Colorado she has a flat tire and a good looking cowboy stops to help her. His name is Luke and his family use to own the ranch that she is now part owner in. She finds she is attracted to this handsome cowboy. Once at the ranch she meets Libby the happy go lucky sister and Emma the bitch. She doesn't like anything. Luke has hopes of trying to buy back the ranch for his dad and brother. You will love this story and it will hold your interest the whole way throughout the book. Find out what happens when Luke and Madaline get together.

I really enjoyed Homecoming Ranch by Julia London. The storyline is rich and the characters are complex. When Madeline first appears on the scene she is an uptight, slightly OCD, controlling person and I found myself thinking, “This is the heroine of the story?” But Madeline begins to change as the story goes on, and I found myself really liking her and rooting for her and Jake. As I read this book I didn’t want it to end. I was having so much fin in Jake and Maddie’s world despite the many complications Maddie managed to cause that I just wanted to stay in the pages of the book and see what was going to keep happening. I had fun with Jake and Maddie and I definitely recommend this book to romance readers. It overs a great love story, quirky characters, interesting complications and everything else you could wish for in a romance.

This was an easy, cute, little read. I didn't particularly like all the characters or the way in which the story played out, but it was cute. It had a definite chick-lit feel to it, but was also a little more contemporary. There was very little sex, and not graphic. My biggest complaint was the whole guilty thing that Luke had going on. He had nothing to feel guilty about-- going to college, doing what he loved, and working on an MBA. I didn't like the way his father was offended by his "bitterness." It just rubbed me the wrong way. I also, really did NOT like that the girls who inherited the ranch didn't do more to give it back to whom it belonged. It just didn't sit well with me. But other than that, it was a fine read.
